DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all those associated with St Panteleimon ahead of this afternoon’s game. It is our 3rd encounter with St Panteleimon having played them both in the league and cup. Both games after 90 minutes have ended in a draw, so we expect another tight encounter this afternoon. I am sure they will be looking for a strong 2nd half of the season to have a real push, just like us.

I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and welcome you all back for our 1st home game of 2023. I would also like to wish Julian Nutley a happy birthday. For those that are lucky to have met and know Julian you will know what a fantastic guy he is. He is passionate and has been incredibly supportive to me, the coaches and all the players since we arrived. Julian’s support at all times has been unwavering and after poor results offers support and kind words. Today’s game will be followed by 3 games on the road and at the end of the

month with another home game against Ardley United. The way our supporters are travelling and taking over, away from home every game feels like a home one in terms of atmosphere.

I want to start by paying tribute to the wonderful support we had once again prior to today’s game. We travelled in superb numbers prior to Christmas against St Panteleimon which is not the easiest of places to get to, never mind 4 days before Christmas.

Over 220 were here watching our win against Crawley Green in horrendous conditions and full credit to each and every one of you for the support. I was also once again delighted to see so many Dunstable Town fans in our last outing against Baldock Town.

My reaction to the game was quite simple, I thought overall we were average which was indicative of the day really. They are always tough fixtures around this time of the year and seeing

some of the results certainly threw up some surprises. I appreciate the pitch was hard to play on but that’s the way it is. We are in the 9th tier of the football pyramid and need to understand very quickly that we have no divine right to play on luxury pitches every week.

I felt comfortable at the start of the game and we looked structurally solid forcing Baldock to rotate the ball side to side and shoot from distance which never caused Connor any trouble. A lightning quick transition midway through the half saw more excellent hold up play from Kelvin Osei-Addo who slid in Tolu Ikuyinminu who raced away before finding Danny Webb at the back post. Webby had the composure and was exceptionally unselfish to pass back across for Kelvin who couldn’t quite convert. Moments later and a free kick was conceded and their centre back walked off shoulders too easily to head Baldock in front. Not much happened before we came out and got our equaliser early into the 2nd half. A wonderful pass from Webby played in Kelvin who was ruthless to bring us level. The game was end to end and we had some really good chances to win it. I always like to give a fair reflection and had we have won the game I think that would have been exceptionally harsh on Baldock Town. Baldock had the better spells of possession, but I feel watching the game back we had the better chances. It’s a game we need to park, move on and ensure we are back to our usual ways this afternoon.

69 points are available now and my sole focus in on ensuring we get as many of those as we can. The destiny of our season is firmly in our hands, we are not reliant on others. The selection for games is always on merit and if that

means that some of the fan’s favourites find themselves out of the team then unfortunately, that Is football.

Football for me is never personal. It is strictly business. We all love to win and nothing in football can ever beat that feeling of seeing supporters, directors and committee members with beaming smiles after a win. It’s nice to know that as the Head Coach I have been able to play a small part in bringing joy to people. It’s the losses and draws that are the worst. Whilst I feel I personally play a small part in victories I play the biggest part in defeats. That is testimony to everyone at this club and how well you have all supported me, my players and coaching staff that we are all so desperate to do well. I do thrive on that responsibility hence why I have gone through a few water bottles and tactics boards over the last 15 months.

It is a really big 15 weeks coming up for us in which we have at least 1 more cup game and a further 23 league games. That averages out at 1.6 games per week so you don’t need to be University Professor to work out we will be busy. I have become a bit of weather fanatic in the last few weeks constantly looking at forecasts. The reason for this is a couple of weeks of bad weather leads to further backlog of fixtures. I don’t want us to end up like Ardley United last season where they were playing 4 games a week in the last couple of weeks. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and we can get a consistent run of games and more importantly a consistent run of wins. Enjoy today’s game and thank you for your continued support.

A warm welcome to you all and to our visitors, St Panteleimon. I hope you had a good New Year and if you’ve made a resolution, it’s not been broken yet.

Two weeks ago, we played St Panteleimon on a Wednesday evening in the Dudley Latham Cup. St Panteleimon play their home grounds at Hertford Town which as the crow flies is just over 25 miles from their spiritual home in Harrow, Middlesex.

Their rise through the leagues has been spectacular and they are well backed by the expatriate Greek & Greek Cypriot community especially around Harrow & North West London. Both teams like to get the ball down and play football and the 3G surface at Hertford Town enables St Panteleimon to do just that. They should find conditions here at Creasey Park to their liking and we’re expecting another closely contested match.

We got a belated Christmas present with a good win over Crawley Green on the Tuesday Bank Holiday. Two quick fire goals within the space of 10 minutes from Danny Webb & Kyle Davison Gordon were enough for us to return to winning ways at home. Prior to the match, Crawley Green had the best away record in the League having won seven of their nine matches away from the Brache and having only conceded 10 goals on their travels.

Another good crowd of 225 saw us see out the year with an average home attendance of 233. Second only to Leighton Town and higher than twelve clubs at Step 3, Beaconsfield Town, Met Police, North Leigh, Wingate & Finchley, Truro City, Kings Langley, Corinthian Casuals, Harrow Borough, St Ives Town, Hayes & Yeading, Leiston, and Yate Town plus 89 of the Step 4

teams in the eight different leagues nationally.
“Another good crowd of 225 saw us see out the year with an average home attendance of 233. Second only to Leighton Town and higher than 12 clubs at Step 3 and 89 of the Step 4 teams in the eight different leagues nationally.”

That really is a tremendous effort from an awful lot of people working incredibly hard behind the scenes to make matchdays an enjoyable experience and to Joe & Kyle for generating the type of interest in the Team that I’ve not seen in my 13 years of supporting the Club.

Increasing attendances and Club ownership really is key to how far we can progress our social enterprise ambitions over the next few years. With no matchday income from the bar or food sales, no clubhouse to call our own and be able to hire out, and most definitely no benefactor with deep or short pockets depending on his or her whim, we are far more reliant on gate receipts, advertising, sponsorship, and prize money than almost every other club at this level.

I’m delighted to announce that next season we will be fielding a Veterans Team. Chris Golding will be organizing and managing the side for the Club. It will come under the Club’s Improving the Lives of Others programme, and my thanks not only to Chris for his vision and passion for the project but to the Club’s Mental Health Ambassador, Yvonne Verla, who has researched the psychological and mental health benefits that football can bring to players over 35 who may have had to cut short earlier careers due to injury or through work and family commitments.

Chums and Crumbs, superbly run by Lee Nutley, has been chosen by ASDA to be one of the three local organisations to feature in its green token scheme. No longer do you get given green tokens when you leave the checkout, nowadays its an online vote. There are three prizes worth £300, £400 and £500 and the winner is the organization that gets the

most popular votes. So please vote for Chums & Crumbs (our joint venture with Titan PCN & Stevenage Leisure) https://www.asda.com/green-tokens/ store?store=4663

On Wednesday night I watched our U18s play some extraordinarily good football as they ran out 3-0 winners against Luton Town Cedars. Ayub has got the lads playing some very exciting football and a good crowd of 65 on Wednesday saw a very good game. A lot of the lads are based in North London, so we’re trying to arrange a First Team game when they and their parents can be our guests for the day.

And finally….I don’t normally do this but today I’m going to make an exception and wish our Commercial & Marketing Director / Business Consultant, Julian Nutley a belated happy birthday. A random conversation between Julian & myself over two years ago when neither knew the other set the ball rolling for our restructure to a Community Benefit Society in July 2021.

You could write what I knew about running a business on the back of a stamp and it was Julian who agreed to be the Club’s Business Advisor & Consultant when it became clear we needed someone with a strong commercial background if we were to proceed down the CBS pathway. The rest is history as the saying goes Julian arranged for Lee Nania to join us with a similar skill set and the only Brexit benefit, I can thank Mr Rees-Mogg for was the return of Gary Levy to complete the football and business background of the Club to give us the solid foundation we now enjoy. Happy birthday Jules!

The Community of St. Panteleimon was founded in 1975 by Archbishop Athenagoras (Kokkinakis) of Thyateira & Great Britain. He celebrated the first Divine Liturgy on the 27th July 1975 at the Community’s original location at the Anglican Church of St. Peter in Sumner Road, Harrow.

During March 1978 Archimandrite Meletios Webber became the new Parish Priest. The Community then moved to the Methodist Church at Welldom Cresent, Harrow in May 1981.

Father Barnabas Georgiou took over as the new priest in March 1985. The Community moved yet again in 1989 to another building – the Anglican Mission Church of the Holy Spirit. This was to be the Church’s permanent location for the years to come.

On the 21st January 1994 the Community completed the purchase of the freehold property of the Holy Spirit Church, the neighbouring hall and the vicarage. The Community numbers some 10,000 members and is a registered charity.

Saturday 16th May 2015 was a very beautiful and sunny day in London. It was also an historic day for St. Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Community. A Football Team was established with the name of “St. Panteleimon FC”! It was decided to compete at the Cypriot Football League of London, called KOPA! The KOPA Registration was confirmed at its AGM on Sunday 14th June 2015. This brought together many people who love the “Beautiful Game”, especially the young generation! Over the next few weeks as many as 60 young people

came to train and tried to be selected for St. Panteleimon First Team.

The vision of St. Panteleimon Football Club is to develop, build and maintain a high quality, transparent and holistic program that provides a quality sporting and social environment where everyone feels welcome to participate and has a strong and proud association with its community. To provide an inspirational and motivational environment where preparation, practice and hard work generate legitimate opportunities for success, while emphasising the importance and development of fundamentals and techniques necessary for positive experiences in football and in life, creating a consistently exciting and entertaining program that generates a wave of support, pride, and tradition for their entire community to share.

From the beginning of the founding of St. Panteleimon FC great interest was shown by the local as well as the international press. Many important individuals had sent their kind massages, good wishes, and congratulations.

The Team was honoured to have Gary Karsa as its first Manager. He was No. 2 Manager at Aston Villa (English Premiership) until recently. George Frantzeskou accepted to be the Chairman, and later on when Gary Karsa resigned, he took over the Manager’s post as well. The other members of the Committee are: Chris Andreou ViceChairman, Savvas Andreou Treasurer, Panayiotis Argyrou Assistant Treasurer, Soteris Merentitis Public Relations Officer, James Neofytou Twitter page administrator, Dr. Serafim Kiriakidis

and Soteris Pefanis members of the Committee. The Parish Priest of St. Panteleimon Church Fr. Anastasios D. Salapatas is the Chaplain of the Team. Savvas Andreou & Panayiotis Argyrou are the senior sponsors, accompanied by the generous financial support of various other individuals and companies.

The Emblem of St. Panteleimon FC is based on a Fr. Anastasios Salapatas’ idea. The motto “Faith First” was suggested by the Captain of the Team Nick Salapatas and all the artistic work was done by a dedicated member of the Community Mrs. Evie Efthimiou. The Emblem contains the following details:

1). The name of the Team at the centre.

2). The colours of the Byzantine Empire (purple), of Greece (blue) and of Cyprus (yellow and light bronze).

3). The motto FAITH FIRST, with reference to their Christian Faith as well as to the faith in victory that the players should always have.

4). The symbol of the Holy Cross (referring to their Christian identity).

5). The emblem of the Hellenic Nation.

6). The ancient column (referring to the Classical Civilization of both Greece and Cyprus).

7). The emblem of the Byzantine Empire, with the ball at its centre (referring to their Greek Orthodox Civilization in connection with football).

8). The year of founding -2015- on the top of the column.

His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain, as soon as he was made aware of the founding of St. Panteleimon FC gave his Blessing, in the form of the following letter:

“Dear Fr. Anastasios,

We received your epistle of 22nd May 2015, by which you inform us of your intention to establish a Football Team at your Community and thank you very much.

We offer our blessing to this fine endeavour of the Community, which will attract the Youth and it will create attractive conditions for sports and not only.

We congratulate you for this initiative of yours and wishing health to you and to your associates and the supervision of the Holy God in your projects, I remain with warm wishes and with love and honour in the Lord.

Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain”

Regarding the venue and the sporting facilities for the team, it was thanks to the generous sponsors (Savvas Andreou and Panayiotis Argyrou) that they had secured at the first season the use of the great facilities of Barnet FC, which was very close to the Church of St. Panteleimon & St. Paraskevi, only 1.8 miles away. For the second season the Team has moved to even better facilities, at the Silver Jubilee Stadium, 2 miles away from their Church, giving St. Panteleimon the best sporting facilities in the KOPA League.

They competed in the Cypriot KOPA League for two seasons, winning the double in 2016, as Second Division champions and Cup winners. In the 2017-18 season the “Saints” entered the FA system, joining the Middlesex County Football League Division 1, and were promoted as undefeated Champions!

The 2018-19 season proved even more successful with the Saints claiming the Middlesex County Football League Premier Division Double registering only one loss for the entire year, winning the Championship and the Cup! They were also honoured to participate for the first time in their early history in the FA Vase, reaching the first-round proper, after succeeding in the first two qualifying rounds.

With four successive promotions, St Panteleimon FC have risen to Step 5 and play in the Cherry Red Combined Counties Premiership and have since moved to Hertford Town’s ground for their first season in the Spartan South Midlands League.

Another good turn out from Blues supporters who made up half of the attendance of 123 left the New Lamb Meadow relieved that Kelvin OseiAddo’s second half strike had secured another point but a little frustrated that their team had struggled in the first half and ex Blue, Newman Carney had scored, seemingly unchallenged, with a header from a free kick in the first half.

The Baldock team showed many changes to the side that had been beaten comprehensively in the League Challenge Trophy at Creasey Park in early September. Carney with all of his many years’ experience was assured and a key player for the home side who also had Step 3 experienced Bobbie Buchanan pulling the strings and making things tick in the middle of the park. However, had Kyle Davison-Gordon’s drive gone in and not hit the woodwork in the second half they could have been celebrating all three points. A draw felt the right result and it takes the Blues up to 8th place in the League. It also means that in five months of League action they’ve only been beaten twice which is a remarkable statistic and a real testimony to Joe & Kyle’s recruitment over the summer.

The team has the joint meanest defence in the League having conceded only 18 goals, the same number as Leighton and Leverstock. Tight and organized at the back it was evident on Monday afternoon, whereas the last time the two teams met at the New Lamb Meadow during the business end of last season, the Blues were indebted to Dan Gould who pulled off three incredible saves to

keep the score 0-0 with only a scorching drive from Kelvin Osei-Addo which was just over was a strike of any note. On Monday Connor Coulson had a much quieter game than his predecessor and the impressive Danny Webb & Tolu Ikuyinmanu always looking dangerous & likely to create something out of nothing. There’s always real intent to match the endeavour and it seems only a matter of time before all the gears click into motion and the results return.

On another day Danny Webb’s cross to Kelvin Osei-Addo in the first half makes the back of the net bulge and the game could have taken on a very different direction. However, it wasn’t to be and the Blues rued their lost opportunity.

Ten minutes though into the second half & it was the same combination that struck with such devastating precision. Webb showed remarkable tenacity and spirit and almost out of nothing played Kelvin Osei-Addo through. Kelvin was calmness personified as he hit the ball sweetly home to spark Regimental celebrations.

A point a piece was a fair result and the Blues can now look forward to a home game against St Panteleimon on Saturday January 7th, before returning to the New Lamb Meadow the following Saturday when they take on Baldock’s landlords, Arlesey Town, who despite a difficult start to the season and currently sitting in the second relegation place, beat Baldock at home on the 27th December, to record only their first home win of the season and their first home win since February.

joziah is a cobbler

What a wonderful start to the New Year. Joziah signed for Dunstable Town U15 Lions this season and from the first session, we knew we had a special player.

An old-fashioned number 9, he has everything - pace, power, strength, and an eye for goal.

Eight goals in the first six games of the season, shot him to the top of the scoring chart and it was no surprise to see scouts wanting to take him.

His work ethic in training and matches is testimony to the values instilled in him by his Mum, Gemma, who too will be sorely missed by the Lions Family.

We wish Joziah every success at Northampton Town and thank him for the part he’s played this season.

J-Dog will always be welcome on the side-lines to support his mates.

My name is Ellie, and I am 9 years old and in the third grade at school. I live in Morrison, Colorado, U.S.A. We are famous for the Red Rocks Amphitheatre and our mountains.

I started playing football at the start of the school year in 2022, and I love playing the sport now. I had never played it before, but having a wonderful coach and great teammates, I have come far in my abilities. We won five out of six of our games this past season, and I cannot wait to play again in the spring.

So, what is my connection to Dunstable? Well, my grandparents live there. This year was our first visit to see them since Covid-19 happened and it was great to spend time with them and be back in Dunstable again. One of the highlights of my trip was getting to meet the Dunstable Town players and a tour the club. Everyone was incredibly nice, and

I could not believe how good the players were!

I also made a new friend in Georgie, who helped show me around and even played a little football with me. I cannot wait to be back to watch a game!

Saturday 17th December 2022 3pm

– The Isthmian League South East Division – Southwood Road, Ramsgate

It had been a week like no other. I know we always say that when it is too hot, too cold or too wet, but the sub-zero temperatures had decimated Non-League football up and down the country. Whilst there were signs of a thaw, we still had to get through one further night of freezing temperatures.

Many clubs took the early option, being allowed to consult with match officials 24 hours before kick-off and call games off. Others chose to do what they could with preparation for the freezing night ahead and hope the forecast warmer (ha!) temperatures on Saturday morning would be enough. That was our strategy at Lewes and if we had been playing a

local derby, where the away team were committed to be travelling so early, then we may just have got our game on. Alas, at 9:45am, with one area of the pitch still semi-frozen, the game was postponed.

Of course, I’d had one eye on alternative fixtures but they had also been dropping like flies. Situations like this bring out the armchair experts who don’t quite understand a) the process clubs have to go through to get a game on or off, b) the availability of willing hands to help and c) the myth of the “all weather” pitches.

I’ve heard the statement so often in my time at Lewes. “If we had just installed a 3G then we wouldn’t have these issues” asks the fans, assuming that the £1m it costs to lay one is found from behind the sofa. “You’ll make that back in a year or so through renting it out”.

Not quite – a 3G pitch depreciates based on usage – heavy usage means the shock pad, the spongy surface layer

that stops it playing like QPR’s ground in the 1980s, needs replacing in the medium term at significant cost. You also incur the costs of opening a ground up, electricity and staffing. Factors that are often ignored or forgotten.

There was no coincidence in that of the seven Isthmian League games that were still going ahead by 11am, six were on 3G pitches (the seventh was on the warmer climes of Guernsey). “You see” say the 3G advocates, but likewise, five other games due to be played on 3G pitches had been cancelled. It isn’t as simple as sweeping the snow off the surface on a 3G – doing that will also remove the rubber crumb that is essential to maintain the structure of the artificial grass.

It appears down on the Isle of Thanet and the Kent coast, the temperatures were a few degrees higher than elsewhere in the South East which led to the games at Sheppey United, Margate (a friendly), Folkestone Invicta and Ramsgate going ahead. Faced with a choice of household chores, Bluewater (A) or a 75 minute drive down to the home of

The biggest news of the week in these parts wasn’t the team’s position at the top of the Isthmian League South East but the appearance of a “Penguin imposter” on the beach.

The little Guillemot caused quite a stir when he was mistaken for a penguin by a jogger who posted a video on Social Media, causing a local news frenzy. The good news is that the bird is being cared for by staff at Briar House vets in Broadstairs and will be moved to an animal welfare site for recuperation.

The football club are certainly enjoying life this season. The installation of their

3G last year has seen more investment in the squad and as a consequence a rise up the table, sitting atop as we approach the half-way point of the season. Whilst the 3G has transformed the club, the ground is still relatively untouched over the years. It is without a doubt one of the biggest “grounds” in the Non-Leagues, now even more visible with the installation of the new pitch.

Large areas behind both goals and in front of the main stand certainly give Ramsgate the potential to host big crowds, but with just under 500 in the house for this one, it did feel “roomy”. I’m sure the club has ambitious plans for the future which will see them maximise the space they have available over time and when finances allow.

To be honest the game never got going. Chichester lost winger Tom Chalaye after 20 minutes to a nasty injury, whilst the home side forced a couple of corners but never showed that top of the table dominance. Even a couple of fans I spoke to couldn’t put their finger on why the season had gone so well –not a bad place to be I suppose!

The stunning sunset was the highlight of the second half as both sides tried to warm up the crowd as the temperature plunged. Perhaps we were expecting too much, having been starved of football for a whole 10 days. In the grand scheme of things, it was a point gained for Ramsgate rather than 2 points lost as they extended their lead at the top of the table.

In a few days time when temperatures “soar” we will forget this one but come the end of the season just how important will the point be?

ReCommeNDeD PUB

The White Horse in Arlesey village has a decent range of Greene King real ales. A lovely large, thatched house formed from three old cottages dating back to 1805 when it opened as a pub.

If you are traveling via the village of Ickleford, we would recommend a stop at the Old George, a 17th century country pub in the centre of the village. A tunnel runs from the pub to St Katharine’s church nearby. There is a lounge bar with an inglenook fireplace and lots of beams and it also stocks Greene King ales.
