Welcome to Paul, Matt, the players, supporters, and all associated with Crawley Green ahead of today’s game. I hope all supporters have had an enjoyable and safe Christmas time and are as excited for the game as we all are. Crawley Green currently sit top of the league after an excellent start to the season and I have no doubts they will be looking to maintain that form and have a real push at the title during the 2nd part of the season. I have no doubts the game will be competitive and played in the right spirit.
This is now my 2nd Christmas in charge of the club and 12 months ago we were in a very different position to where we are now. Last season we were trying to climb out of the relegation places to a safe mid table space. Now we sit 10th in the table looking to break into the top parts of the table. If you had said to me in August, we would be 10th at Christmas I would have personally seen that as a disaster. What I have come to realise that 10th is because we have only played 13 league games which has
been a constant source of annoyance for me. We enjoyed a decent run in both the FA Cup and FA Vase which obviously me and the lads wanted to continue. We now must get our league form and momentum back. We currently have 2 league defeats in the league which is far from a disaster. We now need to ensure we kick the win column up.
I am delighted to be able to say that we are getting closer to welcoming back most of our squad. Liam McCrohan has recovered well from his ankle injury and is now back in contention. Ethan Creary has made a good recovery from his foot injury and is also back and raring to go. Sean Immanuel has made an excellent return, trained exceptionally well and is back in the squad. Robbie Goodman’s 1 game suspension has turned out to be the longest 1 game suspension in history. He is still suspended due to his cup tie in the Vase and Dudley Latham cup. The game comes a little too early for Kyle Faulkner unfortunately which is disappointing for us as Kyle has been a big player for us.
“with the current economic situation, it is even harder than ever to support your team and we cannot thank you enough for all of you that continue to pay your hard-earned money to watch, support, and cheer us on.”
We are nearly at the point where we have a full squad to select from. That leaves us with around 22 players fighting for 11 places. t’s going to be a huge 2nd half of the season in terms of schedule and games. The squad will be utilised that is for sure. We get 33 plus training every week, some clubs at our level get 5 or 6! There is always competition and that for me is healthy.
Our last game vs St Panteleimon I was largely very satisfied with. We came out on the front foot, really aggressive both with and without the ball and were back to our normal self. The game had everything when you watch it back. Goals, shots, big tackles, energy, and a penalty shootout. As I said in my post-match Podcast the support on a Wednesday night in what feels like the middle of nowhere was humbling. It was fantastic to see you all there and especially great to see our Chairman Andrew Madaras back. We have missed him without a doubt. Andrew always brings the calmness, serenity and tranquillity to situations which isn’t always easy when he is having to deal with passionate and emotional staff and players especially me! The players, staff and I were delighted to see him back.
Regarding the game I felt we controlled large parts of the game. The red card from them in what can only be described as a complete plot loss actually helped them, I felt. Danny Webb made it 4 goals in 4 games finishing from an excellent Tolu cross. We then had a period of dominance before they equalised. I must give full credit to their lad who hit an absolute rocket from 30 plus yards from a free kick straight into the top corner. No Goalkeeper saves them. The goal was a mixed reaction from me. Sometimes in life you just have to stand there and applaud an outstanding piece of quality on a football pitch and that was one of those moments.
Second half we were very dominant but didn’t work their GK enough. We were on the front foot, and I could only see us scoring on the balance of play. Fair credit to St Panteleimon who have some of the best attacking players at this level they are always a threat. Dean Morgan equalised pretty much out of nowhere after a wonderful cross into the box. Not for the 1st time this season we showed fantastic heart to equalise late in the game. An excellent forward pass played by Benji Crilley picked out Tolu Ikuyinminu who fizzed another excellent cross that went into the net. Once again, we looked really fit and strong going into the latter stages but unfortunately time ran out and we went to penalties.
Dean Morgan had his penalty well saved by Connor Coulson and I thought the five penalties our lads served up were exceptional. J’Ardell Stirling, Joe Sellers-West, Ruairi Mills, Dan Naylor, and Tolu Ikuyinminu left their GK with no chance. A semi-final tie now awaits us against either Leighton Town or Shefford & Campton.
I look forward to seeing you all today at the game and hope we bring you goals and loads to cheer against a very good Crawley Green side. We have plenty of home league games left. As I always say the support makes a bigger difference than you will all realise. When we took over the numbers were ok at best, now they are excellent every week. With the current economic situation, it is even harder than ever to support your team and we cannot thank you enough for all of you that continue to pay your hardearned money to watch, support, and cheer us on.
A very warm and festive welcome to all of you attending today’s match v Crawley Green and to the many hundreds of you who will be reading this online. This is our last matchday programme of 2022 and it’s a timely reminder that this is the 17th best programme in the whole of the non-league pyramid.
The love and attention that Scottie puts into each edition is another example of why this Club is so special. Whether the print run is 100 or the online readership is 700 or 800, the fact is we want this to be a window into the Club, and an account of who we are, what we are striving to create and what we believe in. Thanks to all of you who travelled to Hertford Town FC on Wednesday night to watch the lads progress into the semi-finals of the Dudley Latham Cup. It was a very entertaining and hardfought victory which I thought we were
worthy of. Goals from Danny Webb and Tolu Ikuyinminu in the 90 minutes weren’t quite enough to get us over the line. Penalties were needed and Connor Coulson’s save from former Hatter & Chairboy, Dean Morgan proved to be decisive.
Bad weather postponements in the run up to Christmas means that we still have two thirds of our League campaign to play between our next League game away at Baldock on Monday 2nd January and the following 16 weeks when the season is due to finish away at Stotfold on April 22nd.
While we may have lost some of the early impetus, we’re still handily placed to mount a push for a top five finish but we’ll need to convert more of our chances into goals and keep things tight at the back, cutting out the daft decisions as Joe refers to them.
“your support this season has been nothing short of phenomenal, thank you. average attendances keep rising and away followings often hitting the 60 and 70”
Without much fuss or ado, Joe & Kyle took a group of players and coaches to Caddington Grove Residential Home last week. Supporters Groups Director, Peter Bottom accompanied the group who took over 40 presents for the Home’s residents. You’ll find a short report on the visit on the website in the next day or so.
On Thursday Chums & Crumbs held its Christmas Party for eleven of its regular attendees. Lee Nutley runs the group superbly on behalf of the Club with Vicky Harding doing the same on behalf of our partners and friends at Titan PCN.
Listening to some of the personal testimonies from those attending the group brings it all home to you why we do what we’re doing as part of our Improving the Lives of Others programme. You would need to possess a heart of cold stone not to be moved by the words of some of our attendees. Sphere at the Glider continue to do excellent work in providing peer support for people with lived experience of mental health problems and in recovery. I can’t say a huge enough thank you to Rupert Groves without whom the group would not have a home, and if we did, I doubt very much it would meet with the same degree of acceptance and understanding that Rupert and his staff afford it. It’s a proper home from home and a session which offers so much support to those that attend regularly.
The Directors have given the green light to the Club fielding a Veterans team next year. It will sit under the Improving the Lives of Others programme. The Club’s Mental Health Ambassador, Yvonne Verla, carries out a lot of research on our behalf and has looked at the evidence which shows the detrimental
effect giving up team sports can have on players’ mental well-being either through injury or personal circumstances.
Chris Golding will be running the Veterans Team on the Club’s behalf and has already amassed a very impressive amount of information.
This time last year we were in the middle of our 15 game unbeaten run. We’d just drawn 1-1 at home against Flackwell Heath and were about to draw 2-2 in the New Year game v Arlesey Town on Monday January 3rd. The run would go on all the way through to Tuesday March 15th and was a remarkable achievement.
As was this season’s 11 game unbeaten run between the 6th September and the 5th November with a record of P11 W8 D3 L0 F28 A9 GD +19 PPG 2.454
It’s the type of record that Joe will be keen to get his players to emulate as we enter the final weeks of the season.
Your support this season has been nothing short of phenomenal, thank you. Average attendances keep rising and away followings often hitting the 60 and 70 numbers. Club ownership has risen to approx. 140 and we’re in more talks with more organisations wanting to partner us in different ventures.
Thanks to all of you for coming today and for showing your support. Let’s be loud, proud and be the 12th Man, but be respectful towards our opponents and match officials.
Enjoy the game #COYB
Crawley Green is a suburb of south-east Luton near to London Luton Airport, in the Borough of Luton, Bedfordshire, England. The area is roughly bounded by Crawley Green Road to the north, Devon Road to the south, the Midland Main Line to the west, and Vauxhall Way to the east.
The area was historically owned by the Crawley Family, owners of the now demolished Stockwood House and Stockwood Park. Crawley Green was originally a hamlet and farm on Crawley Green Road, near its junction with Hart Lane. The old farmhouse still stands at 124 Crawley Green Road. Nether Crawley Farm was slightly further up the road near what is now Vauxhall Way.
Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99-year lease from the Council.
Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, had been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately, in that time they had failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years, to enable the team to continue to play at that level.
This was a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), meant that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals.
Luton Clown installed a brand-new allweather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green completed the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile, and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen.
“In the past we have seen a few exCrawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition, the recently transferred Tyreeq Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system.
“A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented
youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. “In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people can participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income, and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, self-confidence, and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.”
Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent
development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.” The Brache had previously been used by Vauxhall Motors (Luton) until an artificial pitch was installed for hockey in 1991, forcing the club to resign from the Isthmian League; the pitch was later upgraded to 3G astroturf. A wooden stand remains in place from the Vauxhall Motors era. Their badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team.
They joined Division One of the South Midlands League in 1995, and when the league merged with the Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League in 1997, they were placed in Division One North. However, they left the league at the end of the 1997–98 season.
In 1999 the club re-joined the Spartan South Midlands League, and were placed in Division One, which was renamed Division Two in 2001. They won the Division in 2004–05 but were not promoted. In 2007–08 they finished as runners-up and were promoted to Division One. In 2011–12 they won the Division One Cup. They won it again in 2015–16. The season also saw them finish second in the league and earning promotion to the Premier Division. The first season in the Premier Division the club finished mid table, but the following season they escaped relegation by 1 point. The 2018-19 season saw them finish in the top half of the table and hoping to improve on this standing the following season. Sitting in 8th place when the season was abandoned and in 12th place when the 2020-21 season was scraped, they could have hoped for a bright 2021-22.
By November sitting in 20th place with just 2 wins from 16 games Crawley appointed Paul Blackman as their manager. They got their first win under the new regime in the New Year with a 4-2 victory at Baldock Town. A further 5 wins saw them avoid relegation with a superior goal difference to London Colney, who in turn escaped the drop due to a reprieve.

A professional performance by a resurgent Dunstable team was rewarded with a penalty shoot out win against St Panteleimon with a place in the semifinals in the Dudley Latham Cup. Despite going 2-1 down against the run of play in the 85th minute, a rasping drive from the man of the match, Tolu Ikuyinminu in the 88th minute took the tie into penalties where Connor Coulson’s save against former Hatter, Dean Morgan, proved to be decisive as all five Dunstable players who volunteered to take a penalty found their spot.
J’Ardell Stirling was only beaten by a fraction to the man of the match award. J’Ardell played in midfield and looked comfortable, composed and was very much the epitome of what Joe asks his players to do and perform.
Alfie Osborne remained as a Centre Half with a back three of Benji Crilley and Kyle Davison Gordon. Wing backs, Ruari Mills and Tolu Ikuyinminu with Luke Dunstan, Harry Beaumont joining J’Ardell in midfield with Danny Webb & Kelvin Osei-Addo providing the fire power up front.
Within the first few minutes Kelvin OseiAddo had hit the post from a tight angle out on the left and Tolu had tested the goalkeeper in an industrious start from the away side.
On the quarter hour the Blues dominance finally paid dividends as a well worked move between Kelvin & Tolu, saw the latter play an inch perfect pass across goal to where Danny Webb was able to meet it sweetly and put the Blues one goal to the good.
St Panteleimon were reduced to 10 men when their no.5 was sent off mid-way through the first half.
Although Dunstable looked comfortable and looked odds on to carry their lead into the half-time interval, St Panteleimon scored from a direct free kick which looked unstoppable. Even Joe Deeney said in his post-match interview with the Talk of the Town podcast, that he stood on the touchline and applauded the goal as did most of us.
Despite some periods of decent pressure Dunstable couldn’t fashion another goal despite some good preparatory play.
Both teams were playing some bright, attractive football and for the neutral this was an excellent and absorbing game, and an excellent advert for Step 5 football from two teams who like to get the ball down and play.
As penalties beckoned St Panteleimon went ahead with only five minutes of normal time to go. However, Tolu Ikuyinminu had other ideas and made the most of an intelligent pass from sub, Joe Sellers-West and hit home to send both sides to penalties.
Dunstable fans outnumbered the home fans by 2:1 and when Tolu Ikuyinminu hit his sides fifth and final penalty home the travelling Deeney Barmy Army & Regiment celebrated in style. Connor Coulson just minutes earlier making the crucial save from Dean Morgan.
Smiles all round at the end and what was especially pleasing was to see the side discover their mojo and play in the style and fashion we know they can do.
Every Thursday between 11am and 1pm a little piece of magic takes place at the far end of the corridor of the Dunstable Centre. To get there you have to walk past the Costa Coffee bar, the library, the swimming pool and the badminton courts. But if you’ve been of single purpose and steadfastly ignored temptation to visit any of the other attractions, then you are rewarded with one of the nicest welcomes you’ll receive in Bedfordshire, never mind Dunstable. Tucked away at the far end of the long corridor is Chums & Crumbs. A joint venture between Dunstable Town FC, Titan PCN & SLL, who manage the Dunstable Centre. Lee, Vicky, or Helen will give you the warmest of welcomes and help you settle into a friendly group of people who have the opportunity
every Thursday to meet with other people for up to two hours. Many of those attending may go for several days without seeing another person and the group serves as a lifeline for many who might be lonely or socially isolated.
The group celebrated Christmas with a festive spread and a traditional game of bingo or two. Every attendee left with a bag of presents and the knowledge & reassurance that they’re valued and respected as individuals and Chums and Crumbs will always be a second home for them.
Thank you to all our owners and sponsors for supporting us with Chums and Crumbs and to Michael Watts, Community Champion ASDA Dunstable for their support.

A few days before Christmas, First Team Head Coach, Joe Deeney and Director of Supporters’ Groups, Peter Bottom headed up a party of Dunstable Town players and coaches who visited Caddington Grove Care Home. Caddington Grove is one of the Club’s sponsors and we thought it only right to bring a little bit of festive cheer to the 55 residents in the home.
Director of CBS Growth & Marketing & one of the Club’s two Business Consultants, Lee Nania, volunteered to buy and wrap enough presents for the residents before passing them onto Peter in a carefully planned piece of logistics.
There may have been a difference in age groups between the players and coaches and the residents they met and chatted to, but the smiles on the faces of the residents they were able to spend
quality time with meant that the visit had been a huge success and one we hope we can do again next year.
Many thanks to Sarah Webber & Val Foley from Hamberley Care Homes for facilitating the visit.
Stuart Fuller is nearly a prize winning author of The Football Tourist books, Chairman of Lewes FC and an aspiring home chef.
Three hours after I had arrived in Doha I was on a bus from Souq Waqif, heading south towards the Al-Janoub Stadium as part of a 48-hour, six (or seven) game adventure in the desert. There would be little in the way of sight-seeing, cultural visits or even niceties such as sleep. I’d managed to arrange a very short trip, in between Lewes’ visit to Potters Bar Town on Tuesday night and back in time for kick-off at the Dripping Pan on Saturday afternoon.
I’d been fortunate it seemed to be able to grab direct flights, a room on one of the cruise ships and tickets to a couple of games on each day. But as the tournament approached, so did my desire to see three, or even four games in the days I was there. Was it even possible? FIFA’s own ticketing rules said
you could only buy tickets for two games in any one day, but a loophole meant that as long as you weren’t the primary ticket holder you could have a ticket “transferred” into your ticketing account.
The key, or so it seemed, was your Hayya Card. Every ticket holder had to have one of these which acted as your travel visa and provided free public transport. The official line was that tickets would be checked against your Hayya card on entry into the stadiums to prove you were the ticket holder.
So game number one wasn’t exactly one that had the visiting fans, or the locals for that matter, getting into the World Cup spirit. At every World Cup there’s one game where there are tickets available wherever you look. When the Ticket Resale platform opened, the one game that always had availability was this one.
Thirty minutes after leaving the centre of Doha the stadium appeared on the horizon in the middle of the desert. We
continued to drive away from it though, before a local approached the driver. It appears he hadn’t been told where the bus drop off was, and was simply following signs for the public car park. This was a common issue in the opening few days of the tournament – plenty of transport but some of the drivers hadn’t actually been told where to go.
The “fan area” on the outside of the ground was in full swing with an hour before kick off. Ear-splitting music, with a compare screaming out demands for any Swiss fans to “twerk” for their country on a stage with a large, female Cameroonian. Nobody was forthcoming. Dotted around the perimeter of the stadium were food and drink tents. Every one sold exactly the same uninspiring selection of soft drinks, crisps and nuts. There was no variety and even though I hadn’t eaten since plane food many hours before, I wasn’t that desperate.
Entry to the stadium was very smooth, assuming your phone doesn’t decide to do an automatically update. This left me hanging around outside the turnstiles, looking a bit suspicious. A security guard approached me and I showed him my phone. He directed me to a shaded area “just in case it took a while”.
The Al-Janoub was the second stadium to be used in the World Cup to be complete back in 2019. Despite the affectionate nickname, the design of the roof was nothing so daring but was inspired by the sails of traditional Dhow boats, used by pearl divers from the region, “weaving through currents of the Persian Gulf”. Whilst it had a capacity of 40,000, it would be reduced to 20,000 post tournament as the home of Qatar Stars League Al-Wakrah. It was an impressive arena and I was
glad to have a seat in the shade. The official attendance was later announced as 39,089 which was optimistic to say the least. I had a whole row to myself and wasn’t alone, the areas behind the goal were busy but the hospitality areas opposite were sparsely populated to say the least.
Before the game there was a presentation on the pitch made by Gianni Infantino (introduced to a chorus of boos), sporting a smart suit, shirt and tie and the whitest trainers you’ll ever see, to Roger Milla, the Cameroonian legend from the 1990 and 1994 World Cup Finals. Milla wanted to take his award and celebrate in front of the small section of Cameroonian fans but security were having none of it and he was ushered away very quickly.
So onto the game itself. Well, it probably lived up to the billing as the game with the least demand. Action was thin on the ground. Swiss efficiency snuffed out any attacking flair of the Indomitable Lions, managed by former West Ham player Rigobert Song and unusually for squads in the World Cup, didn’t have one starting player who played for a Premier League side. A single goal, scored by Switzerland’s Breel Embolo three minutes after the break was enough to settle the game.
I spent the last fifteen minutes planning my journey to game number two, kicking off just over an hour after final whistle at Education City. It was doable but would take some luck with the traffic, Olympicpace speed walking and no faffing around. It wasn’t the auspicious start to the tournament that I had perhaps hoped for but there were five (or six) more games to go – nothing wrong with a slow burner.

Steve Dobson (pictured left) AKA The Pieman and regular contributor to our programme sadly passed away a few weeks ago. His last report from Cirencester Town was his last match. His good friend and fellow ground hopper Shaun Smith recalls how they first met in a pub in Newcastle.
“I became friends with Pieman in 2006 when I first began blogging. He sent me an email to introduce himself and inform me that he too had the same hobby, and was sharing his football travels on the internet. He also joined the 100FgC as Squad no.31. We shared blog links and ever since have taken a keen interest in each other’s football travels. We met for the first time in December 2006 in The Bodega in Newcastle for a pre-match bevvy, prior to his beloved Spurs taking on the Toon. When I arrived at the pub, he introduced himself with a handshake and a pint of ale waiting for me on the table. This meeting became a regular event over the years, with the Newcastle v Tottenham fixture being
one of the first games I looked for when the fixtures were released.
Anyone who knows Steve will be aware of his dedication and devotion to Tottenham Hotspur. He never missed a match home or away and abroad, going back through the decades, which makes him not just one of the club’s most loyal supporters, but their number one fan.
I’ll miss our regular real ale get-togethers and reading about his love of football. It was just last week he travelled with Harlow Town to Cirencester, which turned out to be his last match and final blog report, which I still haven’t read as I’m too upset to do so at the moment.
Steve lived his life to the full through his love of football, in particular visiting previously uncharted football grounds and following Spurs all over Europe. His fantastic blog Pie & Mushy Peas will serve as a legacy to his life and his untimely passing will be a huge miss throughout the Grounhoppers community. R.I.P. Pieman”

travelling by car
From M1 South. At junction 10, take A1081 Airport Way onto A505 Hitchin Road towards Hitchin. Turn left onto A600 Bedford Road past Hitchin Town FC. Turn right at 2nd roundabout to Ickleford and go through village and bear left to Arlesey, ground is on the right.
The nearest station to the ground is Arlesey station, which is a few stops on the Hitchin line. The station is just less than 2 miles from the ground. Alternatively, the 9A Stagecoach bus from Hitchin will get you to Biggleswade station, which is approximately a mile from drop you 3 minutes from the ground via the village of Ickleford.
The White Horse in Arlesey village has a decent range of Greene King real ales. A lovely large, thatched house formed from three old cottages dating back to 1805 when it opened as a pub.
If you are traveling via the village of Ickleford, we would recommend a stop at the Old George, a 17th century country pub in the centre of the village. A tunnel runs from the pub to St Katharine’s church nearby. There is a lounge bar with an inglenook fireplace and lots of beams and it also stocks Greene King ales.
