from the boardroom We now run 15 groups every month free of charge, and in so doing help over 100 people every week A very warm welcome to our visitors from Ardley Utd for tonight’s Quarter final match in the Premier Division Cup. We hope all our guests enjoy our hospitality and have a safe journey home come the final whistle. There is also a special thank you to Alex Alexandrou for sponsoring tonight’s match. On Saturday, Aaron’s dad, Ian Bateman had the pleasure and privilege of awarding The Aaron Bateman Shield to Alfie & Ellie from our Youth Section for being the two players who had showed the most courage, individuality, and inspiration. Ian’s speech was a moving tribute and encapsulated everything that this Club of ours is about and stands for. Well done Alfie & Ellie, you beat off some strong competition and were worthy winners. Thanks to all our colleagues in the Youth Section for helping to make Saturday such a successful Club Day. As a Community/Fan owned club it is important that we reflect the values and aspirations of our owners and local people. Our work in the community has been recognized by Dunstable Downs Rotary Club who donated £500 towards our community activities. Malcolm & Patrick from the Rotary Club were our guests for the day and have been very supportive of our efforts to transform the Club into a social enterprise. We now run 15 groups every month free of charge, and in so doing help over 100 people every week lead happier and healthier lifestyles. It’s partly thanks to generous donations from the Rotary Club that we can provide group activities free of charge.
Our other guests were Nikki & Rosemary from Heritage Funerals. Brad & Abby have transformed our social media platforms and deserve huge praise for the work they do quietly and diligently behind the scenes. Heritage Funerals have sponsored our You Tube channel, DTFCTV and Nikki & Rosemary have become Silver Owners of the Club. We’re now up to 95 individual owners of the Club and on target to reach 100 by the time of our first AGM in the summer. Before kicking off tonight we’ll be holding a minute’s silence to commemorate the lives of two our longest serving fans. Gerry Bates and Peter Fountain have both died recently. Peter’s granddaughter has written a tribute which is printed in tonight’s programme. We offer our sincerest condolences to both families. May they both Rest In Peace. Finally a word of thanks to Kevin Randall from Pro:Direct Academy Luton who has run our U18’s this season. It’s been a bit of a struggle but all our players from Kevin’s academy have given their everything and battled hard. Some of the football they played away at Harpenden, Leverstock Green and Leighton Town has been a joy to watch. Thanks To Chris Gray, Joe Le-Vien, Wayne Upton & Steve Lewington for taking the team for the last three games. The U18’s finish their season with a match at Creasey Park on Thursday 5th May, kick off 7.45pm. Admission £3. Come down and support the lads as they play Luton Town Cedars. Tonight’s winners will play Flackwell Heath at home on Saturday 30th April. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Ardley United - 3

Good evening and a warm welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all associated with Ardley United ahead of this evening’s cup quarter final clash. Flackwell Heath at home on Saturday 30th April awaits tonight’s winners. Tonight, will be the first meeting between us and Ardley in the next few days as we play them in our final league game in Oxfordshire on Saturday. Ardley is a side I’ve been impressed with this season having seen them on several occasions and present another stern test for our group of players. We come into this game needing huge improvements off the back of a poor result and poor performance on Saturday. I must firstly congratulate Paul Blackman, Matt Harding, and Crawley Green for their 3-1 win. Fair play to them they got the job done and I can’t have any complaints about their contribution to the result. I do however have several complaints about our contribution to the game! Rewind back to April 2nd I was deflated and disappointed with our game against Holmer Green but the game against Crawley Green left me irate to say the least. The same question marks over the group re-appeared on Saturday and it will not be tolerated. Since taking the job I’ve always accepted any criticism and shielded the players after poor results, but I will not shield them from last Saturday. Most of the group were like lost little boys in the 2nd half and unfortunately could have severely damaged their futures with me and the football club off the back of the 2 performances against Holmer Green and Crawley Green. There have been far too many similarities in both games from some
4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Ardley United ardley-united-print.indd 4
of the group that I don’t like. I will not single out individuals for criticism as I always reserve criticism for the confines of our dressing room. The players are aware of my feelings with them collectively after a really poor performance. As a manager my job is to pick the team, the formation and assign tactics. Unfortunately for me I cannot go out and do the prerequisites for the players. That means tracking runners, punching your weight in the air, picking up 2nd balls, winning tackles and being brave in contact. The game of football especially at our level is a lot more than neat intricate passing and lovely free flowing football. We want to play a certain way which we will instil into the group in pre-season however due to the state of pitches and I include ours in that it is very hard. Our pitch on Saturday was once again bone dry, bobbly, and horrible to play on. It is not an excuse, it’s a fact and credit to Crawley Green they capitalised on the big moments. We dominated the territory 1st half and had more than enough balls into the box to win 10 games never mind 1! If you lack aggression and don’t want to put your head where it hurts at times, then unfortunately you don’t score goals and that has been a recurring theme from our group. I thought the 3 goals we conceded were extremely disappointing. The 1st one is a simple give and go and we don’t go with runners which is a real non-negotiable of mine and Jordan Mongey ends up with a 1 on 1 to slide it home. The 2nd goal is a ridiculous free kick to concede, it begins with too many players being weak in contact that results in us conceding a free kick. The ball then gets delivered, we don’t attack it and then we are 2-0 down. The 3rd and final

manager’s notes joe deeney The lack of bloody noses, cuts, and bruises within the group in the last 5 weeks probably epitomises our current mentality! goal summed up the day and the least said the better. I appreciate our group was young and there were some very influential characters missing that add bite and aggression but some of what I witnessed I am still furious about. The feedback to the players at the end of the game wasn’t in a raised voice like Holmer Green it was delivered calmly, bluntly and the reality is too many don’t currently fit my personal DNA of what I want. This is a tough, physical league and it’s not a place for passive people. Age doesn’t affect your mentality when competing. Joe Parmley is 20 years old and tackles like his life depends on it and I am delighted to be able to welcome him back to the group tonight. We have been far too soft in the games against Holmer Green and Crawley Green. At the moment we are a side that can’t beat the top 3 in the league and struggle to pick up points against teams in the bottom 3 or 4. I have been as honest as I can with the group the players rightfully took the plaudits with the lengthy unbeaten run but too many appear to have got caught up in their own hype and now dine out on a run that expired over a month ago! I have known most of the group since they were 15/16 years old which sometimes can mean Management Teams become sentimental but that won’t happen in my case. The players in general have been good for the club and have contributed to going from 20th and rock bottom to 9th place. Many people from both inside and outside the club have said to me that we have “overachieved”. Whilst I appreciate the support and acknowledgement of a good run I am still far from satisfied. 9th isn’t good enough by my own personal standards and the facts are the
ardley-united-print.indd 5
last 5 weeks have been far too inconsistent. The lack of bloody noses, cuts, and bruises within the group in the last 5 weeks probably epitomises our current mentality! Now we have a group of players in the last 5 weeks that would be fantastic company on a night out and I would trust implicitly as people when it comes to integrity. I need to start seeing and developing a trust in the group to deliver consistent performances, start killing teams off when on top of games and learning to win ugly! I take no pleasure in writing critical notes and believe me no-one could have possibly felt worse than I did on Saturday night. It has stayed with me all week like Holmer Green did and the only way to numb part of the pain Is by getting a result tonight. I don’t do acting my reactions are emotional and raw both good and bad which I am sure you have all seen! Tonight’s game doesn’t come much harder than a very good Ardley side and our lads now need to step up and book a place in next Saturday’s semi-final. I hope these aren’t my last programme notes of the season! If they turn out to be then I would like to say an enormous thank you to every one of you for all your support to myself and the lads. Keep the wonderful support coming and enjoy tonight’s game.

L Ardley United were formed in 1945 just after the end of the Second World War. In the early years, the club plied its trade in the Lord Jersey FA and played on a pitch which was situated close to the railway line on the Oxford Road. The 1950’s and ‘60’s were successful for the club as they won both league titles and cups; most notably the Oxfordshire Junior Shield on three occasions as well as many other trophies. The acquisition of the current Playing Field site in the mid-60’s enabled the club to move into the heart of the village, and several volunteers led by life-long supporter Doug Hodges built modest changing rooms. Ardley continued to compete in the Jersey League throughout the 70’s and early 80’s without much success but this was to change in the mid-‘80’s with the arrival of Norman Stacey as chairman – a position that he graces to this day. In 1988 the club were promoted to the Oxfordshire Senior League and won
the Division One title at the first attempt, following this up with the Premier Division title the following season. Accepting a place in the Hellenic League for the 1993/4 season, Ardley spent six seasons in the ‘old’ Division One winning it in both 1996/7 and 97/8 as well as winning the Division 1 Cup for a record four consecutive seasons before it was merged with the Premier Division Cup to become the Challenge Cup that we know today. The manager during these years was ex-Oxford United leading scorer Peter Foley and he was to be the first in a line of managers to keep Ardley at the forefront who include Paul Spittle, Paul Berry, Dan Still and Kevin Brock among their number. Major change was to come in the early 2000’s as, along with the Ardley Playing Field Committee, Ardley United oversaw the construction of dedicated facilities along with a separate village hall which enabled the club

to be independent of community activities. The new clubhouse, which had been awarded the Non-League Paper’s Hungerford Cup for most-improved facilities, allowed the club to be promoted to the Hellenic Premier Division and so began the club’s most successful years to date. Kevin Brock took the reins for seven seasons which saw Ardley win several cups including the Oxfordshire Senior Cup in 2013/14, a season during which they narrowly lost out on the Premier Division title by just two points. Following Brock’s departure, Paul Davis took over as manager for nearly two seasons until the resignation of long-time chairman Norman Stacey in June 2017 for personal reasons. Ian Feaver took over the role of Chairman and appointed Craig Adey as First Team Manager. A decision to be voluntarily relegated to
uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West gave everyone some breathing space to adjust to the new regime. Craig brought with him a talented squad of players and they won the Division title gaining promotion back to the Premier Division at the first time of asking. The 2018/2019 season had its ups and downs, but the team finished on a high winning the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup. Lee Matthews was appointed manager for the 2020-21 season, after being joint manager with Danial (Elvis) Knight after Craig departed during the 2019-20 season. The club went through a restructure in the back office, leading to Eddie Nix being appointed as Director of Football and the creation of the Ardley United Development team, managed by Carl Reed.

Peter Fountain
2nd August 1935 to 4th April 2022
Peter was born and bred in Dunstable and was a community man. His beloved Dunstable Town was where he spent a lot of his evenings and weekends. He loved this team and knew each and every player by name and often picked his starting 11 before he’d walked to the ground. As he got older and was less able to attend matches and he would often ask his grandchildren to look up the score and read him the table, so he could keep an eye on their progress. He will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and everyone who knew him at the club..

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE! ardley-united-print.indd 25

young guns.
It’s been pleasing to see our under 7s to under 10s all having fun and playing some great football The season is coming to an end and before I talk about the teams, a big congratulations to our under 7s Lions on winning the PSA Beds Tournament at Creasey Park last weekend. Well done to John Sanders and the boys. All our competitive teams have been competing right up until the end. Our under 12s Whites falling away in the league over the last month but a great season from John, Lee, and the boys.
The under 14s Lions are still in a two-horse race with Tattenhoe for the division 1 title and are now through to the semi-final of the league Cup, so well done to all.
Steve Lewington
The under 12s Lions are still competing and are sitting 4th, which has been a great season for Lukasz and the boys. Our under 12s Phoenix finished the season with a full squad beating Bedford Town 2-1 to finish 3rd, which is a great season from Wayne and the boys. Our under 14s Tigers have finished joint top and will now play in a play-off to see who finishes the winner of the league and they are still in the quarter finals of the plate competition. So still, plenty to play for.

saturday 16th april • Premier Division creasey park stadium • attendance 321 • Andrew Madaras There were no complaints in the Dunstable camp after Luton neighbours left Creasey Park with three precious points in their bid to avoid the relegation trapdoor and maintain their SSML Premier division status. Head Coach Joe Deeney had said in his prematch interview for DTFCTV that this would be a tough match, and nobody should be in any doubt that Crawley Green would give it everything, and they did just that. Emboldened by a 4 – 0 victory in mid-week, the visitors were the better team on the day and thoroughly deserved the victory. Credit to Manager, Paul Blackman who is well-known, and well-respected by many at Creasey Park for masterminding his teams win and their bid for SSMFL survival. In the Claret’s team were former Dunstable players, Joe Hankins, Marlon Burton, Jake Kissiedu and Kai McArthur. All did well. There was also a presentation of a cheque for £500 from Dunstable Downs Rotary Club to Vice Chair & Club Treasurer, Matt Carrington for the Club’s Community Benefit Society Activities. The attendance of 321 was the third highest of the season, beaten only by the visits of Leighton Town and Luton Town. The game had been billed as the DTFC Family Day and it was encouraging to see the number of Youth Section Coaches and their players and families enjoying the warm sunshine and “pay what you want” admission policy.
The large crowd nearly got the start they were hoping for. Dead ball specialist, Dan Naylor, rattled the visitor’s crossbar with a curling free kick on 17 minutes. However, Dunstable struggled to impose any degree of authority on the game with the Crawley Green centre halves winning the ariel battles. Just before the half hour the Clarets took the lead through Jordan Mongey following good work by Luke Andrews. Although Dunstable pressed for an equalizer, Mark Blower in the Claret’s goal was not to be beaten and did well to get down to a shot from Kelvin Osei-Addo. Dunstable made an early change in the second half with top goal scorer, Joe Sellers-West replacing Jack Percy. Sellers-West has been a big player for the Blues this season, scoring 11 goals in 22 games. Injury meant he’s missed the last 6 games and how the home fans hoped his return to the fray would end the scoring drought of goals from open play. That will have to wait for another day. Warhorse Dan Trif replaced Dan Naylor but Crawley extended their lead further on 70 minutes with a header from Matthieu Rancine. Seven minutes later and the away side sealed the win with a goal from Dario Borval. A consolation goal from Benji Crilley on 82 minutes from a corner was all the Blues could muster in an insipid second half performance. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Ardley United - 35

21 April 1986 - Goalkeeping By Committee Doesn’t Work On 21 April 1986, West Ham center back Alvin Martin scored a rare hat-trick against Newcastle--with each goal coming against a different goalkeeper. Playing before a crowd of almost 25,000 at Upton Park, Newcastle began the day with Martin Thomas, their regular goalkeeper. Thomas had missed their previous match, a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, due to a shoulder injury and was still not completely fit. But Newcastle’s back-up keeper had himself gotten injured at Stamford Bridge and did not make the trip to West Ham, so Thomas had to start.
Hedworth lasted less than 30 minutes in goal after damaging his collarbone on an awkward fall, but not before Martin scored again. As Hedworth returned to the midfield, forward Peter Beardsley stepped between the pipes and conceded three more goals, the last of which was delivered by Martin in the 84th minute. The Hammers ended the season in third place, their best-ever finish. Martin remained at Upton Park until 1996, when he moved to Leyton Orient.
After only four minutes, Martin beat Thomas for his first goal of the day. By halftime, with Thomas having conceded two more West Ham goals and a Newcastle own-goal, he was unable to continue, replaced by midfielder Chris Hedworth for the second half.
