inside the boardroom Having seen this club go out of business when I was younger, it saddens me that people of my age missed out on match day experiences A very warm welcome to you all this afternoon and in particular everyone involved with Ardley United. We hope you find your time at Creasey Park enjoyable and wish you a safe journey home (albeit without three points!) I’d also like to welcome match sponsor Andy Burrows, who celebrates his birthday with us today, so if you see him why not wish him a happy birthday? We fully expect Ardley to be a tough opponent today, but whatever the result, it has to be said the transformation of the team under Joe and Kyle’s stewardship is nothing short of remarkable! The belief of the entire squad is amazing to see and hopefully this will lead to us extending our unbeaten run to eleven, at 5pm today Whenever Andrew asks me to do the programme notes I am always unsure of what to write about but having recently watched the video of Dan Naylor talking to our Phoenix U12 team, about the importance of training, this became one of the easier ones to create. Watching every member of the squad hang on his every word makes me realise just how lucky we are to have such a close link with our Youth Section
Rentals, have agreed to sponsor several our Youth teams for a substantial amount, so we thank them for their continued support Having seen this club go out of business when I was younger, it saddens me that people of my age missed out on these match day experiences, which is why I feel it’s so important to ensure we make the club sustainable for generations to come, allowing them the same opportunities as our current youth teams. The memories this will create for these generations will last them a lifetime and speaking to my stepson recently, I found it incredibly heart-warming that the time he spent with me on freezing terraces, are some of his happiest memories. So, I look forward to educating his son in a similar nature To quote Walt Disney “our greatest resource is the minds of our children” and if we can get them involved with the club, creating memories with their family, we’ll have a support base for generations to come! Enjoy the game & come on your Blues!

I have heard of numerous occasions where our senior players and management team attend youth games, plus seeing the number of mascots we are now getting from the Youth Section on match days is really pleasing. Added to this I’m pleased to announce that one of the senior team sponsors, Mayday Vehicle DUNSTABLE TOWN v ardley united - 3

Welcome to the committee, management team, players, and supporters of Ardley United ahead of this afternoon’s game. Ardley come into the game finding themselves in the top half of the table with some excellent results in the last month. They were the team that ended Risborough Rangers incredible run without defeat by beating them 1-0 recently. I was at their game last week against Leighton Town and was impressed with Ardley throughout the game. They have some really good players and will present another stern test for our group of players this afternoon and we will need to be at our best to ensure we take the points. It is 2 weeks since our last game at home to Harefield United which extended our unbeaten run to 10 league games and at the time of writing over 3 calendar months since we last tasted defeat in the league. Whilst a break from league action can sometimes benefit the group, we really wanted to play last week and carry on with the momentum. Our performance against Harefield showed real grit, desire, and ruthlessness in both boxes at key moments of the game. I was disappointed to say the least with our 1st half performance against Harefield and the players were told so during the half time interval. They were left in no doubt as to my feelings during our 1st half showing. For some reason in the 1st half, we were too happy to put the ball forward early without any real bravery and courage to play through the opposition. The incredibly strong wind certainly didn’t help in the 1st half and sometimes conditions like that can paint a false picture. Having the wind behind us doesn’t always help in games and that again was highlighted in the game against Harefield. Fair credit to the
4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Harefield United ardley-print.indd 4
group they responded exceptionally well and came out in the 2nd half with a much braver mentality in possession of the ball. We were a different side and implemented our game plan in possession whilst being organised, structured and courageous in our own box. It was pleasing to keep another clean sheet and achieve back-to-back wins. I must give a huge amount of credit to the players for the recent run we find ourselves on. We have found ourselves in positions in games where we didn’t want to be. The players have shown a never give in attitude that on numerous occasions has led to us turning in points from challenging circumstances. We have averaged 2 points per game over the last 10 league games, which is a pleasing return. I can assure all supporters we are certainly not sitting here thinking our job is done. We have had numerous team conversations to discuss areas where we need to improve starting with a tough challenge this weekend. If you had said to us on October 9th after our 4-0 drubbing away at Harefield where we sat bottom of the league and adrift, we would be in the position we are now, I think it is fair to say we all would have all taken that. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on which way you look at it, myself and Kyle are never fully satisfied. We are always looking at how we can be 0.0001% better every day in every way possible. We are fortunate we have a group of players that share that constant improvement mind-set. When we analyse the last 10 games, we have had to overcome many obstacles and challenges to get results and that will hold our group in good stead for the future seasons. We have had to find ways to overcome 2 goal deficits on 2 occasions, how to hold onto a 1-0
10/02/2022 20:37:37
notes from the bench Ardley come into the game finding themselves in the top half of the table with some excellent results in the last month lead, coming back from behind to get a point despite playing poorly on the day as well as other situations. It shows the character and mentality of the group of players that we can overcome these challenges and full credit must go to them. It is great to see so many supporters regularly attending games and the link they are now forming with players. Several of our players have shown outstanding loyalty to stay with us where they have had opportunities to move on. We are one club and the smiling faces from directors, management, players, supporters, sponsors, and everyone attached to the club has been priceless. Even as the Head Coach I am ultimately a massive supporter and feel the responsibility to everyone at the club to keep finding ways to win. I have said it before: Head Coaches and Managers in Football are responsible for 0% of wins and 100% of losses, that’s the business we are in. The group of players we have really are giving everything and so are our wonderful supporters.
of us want to see our team-mates who are like family go through the pain they have. I have to often remind myself when driving home from games that a defeat isn’t life and death. The lads have been first class in rallying around the lads suffering tough times and the way the 3 lads have handled the worst of times speaks volumes of the types of people they are. I am sure all supporters join me in wishing our lads the best in dealing in these difficult times. Thank you to all our supporters for their ongoing support on the pitch both home and away and hopefully at 5pm today there will be many more smiles and celebrations. Ardley will provide a real challenge and I am sure you will be in for a really good game of football. I hope your blood pressure and heart rate is lower than ours for the 90 minutes! Enjoy the game.
Joe
A great deal of credit must go to our directors who have worked tirelessly to give us the resources to put these players on the pitch. The club goes above and beyond in so many different facets of what we would expect, so the recent run has as much to do with them, as it does with the playing staff. There have been huge challenges with some of our players over the last week coming into this week’s game. 3 of our team have sadly suffered close bereavements or serious illness within the family which is always heart-breaking for anyone. The bond we share as a group is so close that these things really hit us all and none

L In the early years, the club plied its trade in the Lord Jersey FA and played on a pitch which was situated close to the railway line on the Oxford Road. The 1950’s and ‘60’s were successful for the club as they won both league titles and cups; most notably the Oxfordshire Junior Shield on three occasions as well as many other trophies. The acquisition of the current Playing Field site in the mid-60’s enabled the club to move into the heart of the village, and a number of volunteers led by life-long supporter Doug Hodges built modest changing rooms. Ardley continued to compete in the Jersey League throughout the 70’s and early 80’s without much success but this was to change in the mid-‘80’s with the arrival of Norman Stacey as chairman – a position that he graces to this day. In 1988 the club were promoted to the Oxfordshire Senior League and won the Division One title at the first attempt, following this up with the Premier Division title
the following season. Accepting a place in the Hellenic League for the 1993/4 season, Ardley spent six seasons in the ‘old’ Division One winning it in both 1996/7 and 97/8 as well as winning the Division 1 Cup for a record four consecutive seasons before it was merged with the Premier Division Cup to become the Challenge Cup that we know today. The manager during these years was ex-Oxford United leading scorer Peter Foley and he was to be the first in a line of managers to keep Ardley at the forefront who include Paul Spittle, Paul Berry, Dan Still and Kevin Brock among their number. Major change was to come in the early 2000’s as, along with the Ardley Playing Field Committee, Ardley United oversaw the construction of dedicated facilities along with a separate village hall which enabled the club to be independent of community activities. The new clubhouse, which had been awarded

the Non-League Paper’s Hungerford Cup for most-improved facilities, allowed the club to be promoted to the Hellenic Premier Division and so began the club’s most successful years to date. Kevin Brock took the reins for seven seasons which saw Ardley win several cups including the Oxfordshire Senior Cup in 2013/14, a season during which they narrowly lost out on the Premier Division title by just two points. Following Brock’s departure, Paul Davis took over as manager for nearly two seasons until the resignation of long-time chairman Norman Stacey in June 2017 for personal reasons. Ian Feaver took over the role of Chairman and appointed Craig Adey as First Team Manager. A decision to be voluntarily relegated to
uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West gave everyone some breathing space to adjust to the new regime. Craig brought with him a talented squad of players and they won the Division title gaining promotion back to the Premier Division at the first time of asking. The 2018/2019 season had its ups and downs, but the team finished on a high winning the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup. Lee Matthews was appointed manager for the 2020-21 season, after being joint manager with Danial (Elvis) Knight after Craig departed during the 2019-20 season. The club went through a restructure in the back office, leading to Eddie Nix being appointed as Director of Football and the creation of the Ardley United Development team, managed by Carl Reed.

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE!

new sponsors join the team Firstly we would like to thank one of the first teams new pitch side sponsors Mayday Vehicle Rentals who have agreed to sponsor the youth section with two kits for next season. We cannot thank them enough, as we said in the last match day issue against Harefield United we are always on the lookout for kit sponsors. The Harefield United game was great, two teams going head to head and gladly we scored the winner and to see some of our youth section players on the pitch celebrating with the players after the game put a smile on all our faces. Talking to our Head Coach Joe Deeney and some of the players after the game they really appreciate your support. #ONECLUBONEFAMILY

MATCH REPORT saturday 29th january • SSMfl premier division CREASEY PARK • attendance 158 Harefield Utd, were a strong, well organized and well drilled unit. They gave a good account of themselves and will probably consider themselves unlucky to have left Creasey Park without a point. Their work rate was excellent and their compact and determined defensive back line restricted Dunstable to just a handful of chances. The game was ultimately decided by one goal and when it came in the 70th minute it was one of those “I was there moments”. Dan Naylor’s inch perfect free kick out on the right by the touchline was met acrobatically by Kyle Faulkner who timed his scissor kick to perfection to send his shot goalwards. Harefield keeper, Jacob Ballheimer, could only watch the ball fly past his right side. The ball hit the post and rebounded towards Ballheimer who got a hand to the ball but could only push it in the direction of Joe Sellers-West who reacted quickly and poked the ball over the line. Messrs Deeney & Durcan took on the Dunstable Town job in the first week in October last year. As fate would have it, their first game in charge was the reverse fixture from Saturday. The Hares ran out 4 – 0 victors that day and the gaffers got immediately stuck in to rescuing the fortunes of a Club with a rich history but desperately struggling on the pitch. A repeat of the October 9th score line did not look likely on Saturday. The Dunstable backline held tight. Liam McCrohan was a deserved Man of the Match winner. His partnership with the ever-reliable J’Ardell Stirling has seen the Blues concede only four goals from six League games when they have been on the pitch together, two of which have been clean sheets.
Head Coach, Joe Deeney said in mid-week, “Goals win you games, clean sheets win you titles” So keeping a clean sheet against two of the Divisions highest scorers, Richard Pacquette & Louis Bircham was no mean feat. Ex QPR, Brentford and MK Dons star, Pacquette has 16 goals this season and Bircham 14. With their deadly accuracy, restricting their opportunities to add to their goal tallies had to be part of the Dunstable game plan. Dan Gould in the Dunstable goal made some excellent saves at key points in the game and with Creary & Baker playing key roles, a 4th clean sheet of the season was richly deserved. The first half saw chances for both sides. Ballheimer made an excellent double save to deny Kyle Faulkner while Dan Gould was out bravely to thwart one opportunity and then pushed a piledriver over the bar to safety to keep the score 0-0. Early in the second half Dan Naylor headed off the line from Harefield’s skipper Sean Mangan whose header from a partially cleared corner looked goal bound. At the other end, a good run from Joe SellersWest down the left-hand side created an opportunity when he slid the ball to the feet of Kyle Falkner who was only inches wide with a side foot shot. As the minutes ticked by Harefield pressed hard for the equalizer but couldn’t break down the Dunstable defence.

12 February 2007 - Kaká Turns Italian On 12 February 2007, AC Milan and Brazil star Kaká became an Italian citizen. But he continued to play for Brazil. The midfielder joined Milan in 2003 after two seasons with São Paulo. The Italian side paid €8.5M for him and he immediately started providing dividends for them, scoring a total of 14 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions in his first year there as Milan won both the league and the Supercoppa Italiana and he was named the 2004 Serie A Player of the Year. He got off to a strong start at the beginning of the 2006-07 season, which would ultimately result in him winning the 2007 Ballon d’Or. In the middle of the season, he applied for Italian citizenship, which was granted and made official in a private ceremony on 12 February.
into playing for Brazil and ineligible to play for Italy. (He also maintained his Brazilian citizenship). Instead, the move allowed Milan to claim him as a European Union player for UEFA quotas, opening up a spot in the team for a non-EU player. After the ceremony, Kaká said “It is an honor. Now I am both Italian and Brazilian. I am very happy. This helps not only me, but also Milan.” He remained with Milan until June 2009, when he joined Real Madrid. In 2014, he moved the the US and played for Orlando City until his retirement in 2017.
The move was not intended to alter his international status, as he was already locked

Alternatively, you can stop at Mill Hill Broadway Station and a 6-minute ride on the 251 Arnos Grove route leaves a 20 minute walk to the ground. RECOMMENDED PUB The Gate is almost opposite the entrance to Brickfield Lane. It has a couple of cask ales, normally Greene King related and Sharp’s Doom Bar. The white gate sign suspended high over the road is a long-standing landmark, although not high enough to avoid a lorry a few years ago.
