inside the boardroom Once a Blue, always a Blue A warm welcome this evening to Dave Kitson, Chris Sterry, their committee colleagues, the coaching staff, players, and supporters from Arlesey Town. We hope they have an enjoyable evening at Creasey Park and a safe journey home once the final whistle is blown. On Saturday we had the privilege of sharing the day with Ian Bateman and his family. Their pain and loss is immeasurable. What we can do, and I hope we are doing is rallying around and showing the love and support that we have for Ian, Charlotte and the other family members and mark Aaron’s passing in a dignified and sensitive manner. We were all moved by the tribute from Broadfields Utd our opponents on Saturday, who not only brought flowers but made a very generous donation to the collection for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. I can’t begin to thank Kevin, Ryan & Connor Duffy enough for their sheer class on Saturday. I thought the professionalism of our players was superb on Saturday. The fact that Dan Gould was the Sponsor’s Man of the Match, showed that it wasn’t all one-way traffic and we needed Dan to be at his brilliant best to secure the three points. The players’ choosing to celebrate each goal with Aaron’s family behind the goal and then every single one of the playing and coaching staff hugging Ian at the final whistle moved even the coldest heart. It was particularly pleasing to see so many of our supporters come out in numbers and pay their respects to Aaron. Thanks to all of you who brought flowers, mementos, photos, and bottles of Aaron’s favourite drinks.
The day would not have been as special as it was without the help of Arone Thasan and his wife who took care of all the arrangements for the naming of the Aaron Bateman Stand. I’m very pleased to inform you that we start our second Friendship group on Thursday 10th March. We will open Chums & Crumbs at the Dunstable Centre next Thursday. We’re meeting in the big community room on the first floor between 11am and 1pm. The group is aimed at people who may be feeling lonely and would like to get out of their house and meet other people for a friendly chat or join in some activities. As with our other three existing groups it will be free to join. We’re very lucky to be able to work in partnership with Adam at SLL and Vicky at Titan PCN. Lee Nutley heads up the Blues volunteers helping run the group. A few words about Charlie, one of our younger supporters, who came to Saturday’s game carrying his own home-made poster for Aaron. He’d spent a long time making it and it was truly heartfelt and moving and deservedly took its place at the side with the flowers and other tributes. Charlie was one of our mascots on Saturday and my final word of thanks is to Charlie & all the mascots, all our Youth Section teams and to the AFC Dunstable teams who showed their respects with a minute’s applause or a minute’s silence. I can’t put it any better than Charlie did. “Once a Blue, always a Blue……You will always be remembered”

Welcome to Martin Standen, the management, committee, players, and supporters of Arlesey Town ahead of tonight’s cup game. Wow!! Well, where do I even begin after Saturday. Firstly, I would like to express my personal gratitude to Broadfields United and their support on what was truly an emotional day. It’s not often I ever get lost for words, but Saturday blew myself and everyone away. On arrival at the ground and seeing The Aaron Bateman stand was a wonderful touch. Full credit to everyone involved and a big thank you to our neighbours AFC Dunstable for working with us to name the stand after our very own Aaron Bateman. The kick-off was delayed after a bad accident on the M1 which allowed our players to spend some time with Aaron’s family before the game. It was my first opportunity to meet many of Aaron’s family and what a first-class group of people they are. In what was such an emotionally charged day the support they showed was nothing short of incredible. There were so many elements of the game that felt that the outcome was meant to be. All 3 goals scored at the Aaron Bateman end, 3 celebrations with Aaron’s family, 3 points, a clean sheet, and a chance for us all to show our gratitude in front of Aaron’s family in the Aaron Bateman stand.

The final whistle arrived and a chance for us to all to go and see Aaron’s Dad Ian. Ian’s strength of character, his courage, and the way he handled himself throughout the day would have made Aaron immensely proud. Every one of our players and staff had a chance to go and

notes from the bench It’s not often I ever get lost for words, but Saturday blew myself and everyone away give Ian a hug at the end of the game. At this point I won’t lie I struggled to keep it together during our huddle and debrief on the pitch. I was not the only one and I cannot express my gratitude to this wonderful football club and all that it stands for. Our Chairman Andrew Madaras doesn’t get anywhere near enough credit for the job that he does. I don’t know of many managers who have as strong a relationship with their chairman as myself and Kyle do. Andrew’s thoughtfulness, compassion and support is hugely appreciated by us all. Gary Levy’s support and the way he looks after our players is incredible. Gary on many occasions has gone above beyond to support our players and these gestures are further examples of how well these players are looked after. Matt Carrington our Vice Chairman is probably the only person you hear as much as me during match days, does a great job getting so many things done during the games. Hearing his booming voice when we score always raises a smile. There are so many people that we owe our on-pitch success to. We are backed by the best media team in Brad and Abby who do so much outstanding work to raise our club’s profile. Brad and Abby are 2 of the must humble people I have ever met. They never accept the praise they get but hopefully they will now! Cupcake and Liam Smith continue to do great work alongside Brad and Abby on the photography side of things. Cupcake is a massive personality around the lads and staff and every time I speak to him, I can’t help but feel energised. Lee Nania and Julian Nutley’s passion and vision to take this club forward has been backed up by everything we were promised at the interview.
arlesey-town-print.indd 5
I was once told by a manager that the best day as a manager is the day you join then it all goes downhill! At Dunstable Town it’s been the complete opposite! Kyle and I continue to love our time at Dunstable and hopefully for many years to come we can all continue this special journey. Kristy Lewington, Steve Lewington and Wayne Upton continue to do so many amazing things with our Youth Section and produce our next generation of Young Blues. Finally, a special mention to Scottie. Scottie puts together our programme every week, he is our most vocal supporter and on Saturday I know how hard it must have been for him personally. He handled himself incredibly well and I was delighted to bring the 3 points for him and was proud of him and everyone associated with this club. In terms of performance, it wasn’t our best. We had some fortune and some outstanding individual defending to prevent Broadfields equalising. What I will say is when I see our players putting their bodies on the line like they do and how much they love it here it is great to see. Our players are a special group of people, and I am massively privileged to be at the helm managing them. We were ruthless and clinical at the big moments in both boxes during the game on Saturday. Full credit to the players for the way they dealt with the emotion of the day. Thank you to everyone who came to the game to support us on Saturday. Your support was remarkable and there is only one Aaron Bateman. Enjoy tonight’s game.

L Before the Second World War, Soccer was played on a localised basis, and in common with many clubs in the area, Arlesey competed in the flourishing Biggleswade & District League and entered the Biggleswade Knock-out Cup. During the 1920’s, the club joined the Bedfordshire County League - which was later to become the South Midlands League. Arlesey originally played at ‘The Bury’ before moving to their former home, ‘Lamb Meadow.’ The ground took its name from ‘The Lamb,’ a former Public House situated near the site which, for many years acted as the club’s headquarters and changing rooms. The birth of the modern era is owed to the foresight of officials of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. They purchased the premises and became landlords for the princely sum of just £500 in 1948. Four years later, in 1952, an adjoining area was bought, and this is where the clubhouse used to stand. Playing fortunes have fluctuated since the war and season 1950-51 saw the Blues finish as
runners-up to Bletchley Town in the S.M.L. Premier Division. The following season the 1st XI lifted the championship crown, and the second string were crowned S.M.L. Division Two champions with the Youth team winning three trophies. The 1952-53 season began North Beds Charity Cup final win over Biggleswade Town (the match was held over from the previous season), and ended with a second successive championship win, Arlesey amassing S.M.L. record 52 points. The 1950’s had seen the Blues compete in the South Midlands and Parthenon Leagues. Season 1968-69 saw one of Arlesey’s favourite sons in charge of team affairs; Roland Legate, (who played football professionally for Luton Town) took the helm as player-manager and during his four-year spell, he took the Blues to a league runners-up spot. The start of the 1975-76 season saw Legate return as manager and the trophies came with him, 3 Hinchingbrooke Cup successes, one Beds Senior Cup, the Biggleswade K.O Cup twice

and the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy once. Supporting the Executive Committee’s wish to cross the pyramid to the United Counties League. With two indifferent terms in the U.C.L., Arlesey lifted the Premier Division crown in season 1984-85. During the late 1980’s the Blues won the United Counties League, Premier Division Cup and a Beds Premier Cup final appearance against Luton Town. During the 1991 centenary year in the blues lifted the South Midlands Floodlight Cup with a fine victory over fellow U.C.L. side Irthlingborough Diamonds, who went on to become Rushden & Diamonds in the football league. With changes to support and playing staff for 1994/5 the results exceeded expectations. The South Midlands League championship was won with a record 107 points, but even this memorable feat was eclipsed when Arlesey Town defeated Oxford City at Wembley Stadium in front of over 13,000 spectators to lift the F.A. Carlsberg Challenge Vase on May 13, 1995. The Vase travelled home to Bedfordshire for the first time. For season 1997-98 team were unable to keep pace and their championship aspirations soon evaporated. An FA Vase 3rd round exit occurred in Cornwall’s Porthleven in December and the Blues’ last chance of picking up any silverware disappeared at the hands of archrivals Stotfold who loosened Arlesey’s grip on the Hinchingbrooke Cup with a 2-0 semifinal victory. After a lengthy campaign the club finally received planning permission for a new ground just a few hundred yards along Hitchin Road. The first season at the new Hitchin Road ground began with nine straight Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division victories as Ironton’s men stormed to the top of the table. A mid-season blip in form threatened the side’s hard work but having secured the services of coach Alan Dawson, the Blues went from strength to strength and went on to lift their fifth South Midlands League Championship. A run in of eight consecutive victories culminated in a 2-0 triumph at Milton Keynes City on Thursday 4th May meant the Blues secured the championship. With their ground grading ‘Arlesey Town were promoted to the Ryman Isthmian League Division Three. The sale of
Dave Kitson to Nationwide Football League Club Cambridge United halfway through the season, did little to upset their cause indeed, the signing of ex Stevenage Boro’ striker Neil Trebble boosted their season. A prolific striker, Trebble netted an amazing 18 goals from 17 starts and one wonders just how many he would have scored had he been with the Blues at the start of the season. A magnificent first season in the Ryman League, saw the club lose just two league matches (one at home and one away) as they raced away to win the Third Division Championship scoring an Isthmian League record of 138 goals and the Blues also gained the record of being the first club to attain a 100 + goal difference in the league’s 96-year history. The 2002/2003 season was a consolidation for the rapid successes of the previous years and the highlight was an extended run in the FA Cup winning 4 away matches in reaching the fourth qualifying round. The reward was yet another away fixture, this time at Nationwide Conference club, Hereford United. Arlesey Town represented the Ryman League Division One north and after going behind to a sixth minute ‘soft’ goal, they more than matched their opponents in all departments, even having a goal disallowed. It was such a gallant performance that at the end of the tie, the relieved Hereford fans gave their guests a standing ovation. Season 2003/2004 saw Arlesey Town yet again in the national limelight following a fantastic run to the last 16 of the FA Trophy defeating on the way, both after away draws ‘Hayes FC’ from the Ryman Premier Division and ‘Dagenham & Redbridge FC’ from the Nationwide Conference league. This resulted in an away game with ‘Exeter City FC’ who had just been relegated from the football league. Although losing the game the blues gained respect with an outstanding performance. The season ended with Arlesey Town failing to gain promotion to the new premier structure on goal difference, but small consolation was gained when the Blues lifted the ‘Bedfordshire Senior Cup’ after defeating fellow Ryman League club outfit Leighton Town at Hitchin Road in May. Darren Hay took on the team management during the early stages of 2006/2007 season, when Jon left for personal reasons, with Mike

Brooks as the assistant manager and coach and they put together a very young and eager team for the coming 2007 campaign. This included both experienced senior players supporting by young players who broke into the first team towards then end of the previous season. Arlesey Town finished in the bottom half of the Ryman league with Matt Corbould as the manager and a very young side. With a completely new management structure in place and a new Management team, of: Gary King Director of Football, Lee Cowley Manager, Zema Abbey Assistant Manager, and Darren Staniforth as Coach, Arlesey played the season with renewed style and passion, finishing the season in 9th place in the League and getting through to the first-round proper of the F.A. Trophy and lifting the Beds Senior Cup in the last game of the season. Season 2010-11 saw them staying in the Zamaretto Southern League in the new “Central Division” and saw them looking forward with a lot more hope and even more optimism, with the whole team showing great experience and growing in strength and confidence on and off the field all the time. The season in which Arlesey were in the top echelons all season finished in dramatic stile as they won 10 games on the bounce, had 9 points deducted on the day they thought they had won the league away at Hayes and then beat long term archrivals and near neighbours Hitchin Town on Hitchin’s own ground on their last game of the season to be finally crowned League Champions.
edge as Arlesey missed out on the play-off spot of the Premier Div by just a single point. Although promotion was narrowly missed the Red Insure League Cup was won in a 2 legged final v Frome to bring home yet another impressive piece of Silverware. As the Abbeys left to take up management elsewhere, the club had a change of Management and in November 2013 Rufus Brevett arrived to take the club forward. Although his 1st season was “steady” a very difficult season in 2014-15 saw several changes of management as results failed to materialise a Rufus gave way after Christmas to ex manager Nick Ironton but again this failed to halt the slide and he in turn gave way during the season as Zema Abbey came back with brother Nathan as joint managers, Although this led to an improvement in playing style but they were unable to prevent relegation in the end back to the Central Division. The new season saw them struggle to get to grips with the style of the new division and early form showed them propping up the division, but a second half resurgence saw them push up the division to finish in a mid-table position. Season 2017-18 proved a very difficult year with a season plagued by injuries and problems and indeed a terrible record of no league wins at home all seasons saw the club unfortunately get relegated from the Southern League.
This was followed soon after by beating Biggleswade Town to retain the Beds Senior Cup at Luton Towns Kenilworth Road ground to give Arlesey a League and Cup Double and see them promoted to the new Evo-Stick Southern League Premier Division, a truly tremendous season. The first season in the Premier League was seen as a settling in period targeting staying up and a good cup run, both ambitions were achieved with the club reaching the F.A. Cup 1st round proper for the first time in their history. The second season again saw a good FA Cup run that went again to the 1st round proper before it ended at the Ricoh Stadium against Coventry City. The season finished on a knife DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town - 9

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE! arlesey-town-print.indd 23

an incredible day to remember one of our own Well, I am writing this after our 3-0 win against Broadfields United. Wow what support from everyone. Aaron Bateman would have loved it today. The youth section did him proud. The first team players left everything on the pitch and the fans were awesome so thank you, I know it means a lot to Ian and Charlotte. A big thank you to the youth teams that continued to do minute silences over the weekend. #ONECLUBONEFAMILY

Dunstable Town Muchineripi 53, Sellers-West 81, Faulkner 90 Broadfields United
saturday 26th february • SSMfl premier division CREASEY PARK • attendance 279 • Patrick MacKay Emotional scenes underlined events at Creasey Park on Saturday, as Dunstable Town celebrated the life of fan, friend, and volunteer Aaron Bateman. Town started the game brightly, and a quick counterattack resulted in a through ball sending Jack Percy through on goal, but Broadfields keeper Matt Faley was quickly off his line and Percy could only shoot wide. Percy was causing the visitors trouble again shortly afterwards, when Faley got his fingertips to a low shot from the edge of the box, tipping it onto the post before it was cleared to safety. Terrence Muchineripi was next to try his luck for the Blues, blasting over with his left foot, but Dunstable weren’t going to have things all their own way. Broadfields looked quick going forward, and it was not long before Stevie Ward was able to cut in on his right foot and force a decent save from Dan Gould. The ball rebounded to Ward, but his shot sailed safely over the bar. Floral tributes were laid beside the newly named Aaron Bateman Stand, and this was the end the Blues found themselves attacking towards in the second half, with the majority of the 279-strong crowd willing them on.
the bar. Not according to the officials though; goal kick. A period of Broadfields pressure ensued, and they crafted two very decent chances from corners before a Rhys Ellis long-ranger forced Gould into action. With ten minutes to play, and only a slender lead for the home side, Joseph Sellers-West latched onto a through ball and tucked the ball into the bottom corner, giving the Blues breathing space, to the relief and joy of the fans. A mistake in the Broadfields midfield saw Dunstable able to regain possession and attack, and in the ninetieth minute the cherry was put on top of the victory. Kyle Faulkner received the ball on the left side of the box from Sellers-West, and his deflected shot left Faley rooted to the spot. Even goalkeeper Gould made his way to the top of the field to join in celebrations for the third, and this display of speed probably gave him the edge as he was chosen as man of the match. A fitting performance from all involved, on and off the pitch, on a day of high emotion. We wish you were there watching with us though, Aaron.
Having started the second half positively, it was in the fifty-fourth minute that the deadlock was broken. Muchineripi received the ball on the edge of the D, turned and fired a right-footed rocket into the corner of the goal, before the team ran to celebrate with Aaron Bateman’s family and friends. Broadfields battled back though. A deep free kick was headed into the middle of the box for Ward to get an athletic effort on goal, which Gould managed to tip over DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town - 31

1 March 1921 - FIFA’s Man With A Plan On 1 March 1921, Jules Rimet became FIFA’s third president and remains their longestserving one, holding the office for 33 years. A French attorney, Rimet was involved in FIFA’s founding in 1904, but the presidency first went to his countryman, Robert Guérin. Guérin served for only two years and was succeeded by Englishman Daniel Woolfall. Rimet, meanwhile became the president of the French Football Federation in 1919 and remained in that position when he took over from Woolfall two years later, holding the two positions jointly for over twenty years.
Rimet resigned as the FFF president in 1942, but remained FIFA president until 1954. His 33year tenure remains the longest in FIFA history, with João Havelange’s 24-year term a distant second. In 1956, two years after his retirement, Rimet passed away, just two days after his 83rd birthday.
When he ascended to the FIFA presidency, the organization had only 12 members, which he raised to 85 before the end of his term. But one of his most significant contributions was the establishment of the World Cup, which he proposed in 1928 and was first played in 1930. The World Cup trophy was renamed in his honor in 1946.
