FROM THE BOARDROOM Good evening and welcome back to Creasey Park. It’s our 3rd home game in succession and we welcome the players, officials and officials from Arlesey Town. At the time of writing they are in transition after their management team recently moved on. We hope that period of uncertainty will soon be resolved and know that they will be worthy opponents this evening. If you were a neutral on Saturday, in our fixture against Newport Pagnell, you would have been royally entertained. To be fair we all were, but as the losers I know that you will share my feelings of frustration and ‘what might have been’. Save a devastating 10 minute period either side of half time we showed what a good team we have in development. I stood near to the opposition dug out and it would be fair to say that they were in ‘melt down’ as we moved into a comfortable 2-0 lead. The penalty just ten seconds before half time ultimately changed the whole complex of the game, and to be fair to our opponents they seized the opportunity with both hands. However, in defeat, and when we have finished kicking the proverbial cat, it was heartening to see the Blues came back strongly and nearly grab a deserved point. Those discerning observers will have seen the style of play that we are trying to play, and will also recognise that we are not far from being a very decent team. Cut out the unwanted penalties and individual errors

and we will give any team a thorough test. I am delighted to report another win for our Development team on their travels, this after a rather frustrating scoreless home draw on Thursday. They have started the campaign well and we look forward to the ongoing progress they are making. I wanted to just mention the quality of support you are giving the team, it is both vocal and encouraging, and when you look around the ground we are attracting a real healthy mix of attendees. There are many aspects to supporting a team and we know that if people are welcomed, entertained , and appreciated they will become long term coverts . The match day experience is something that as a club that we are working to continually improve. Please be assured we do not take your support for granted! Talking of support ,we are taking an increasing number of supporters to away fixtures, and I would really encourage you to make the short trip to Tring this coming Saturday. Finally, enjoy the game, exercise your vocal chords, and cheer the boys on to further success.

Neil

GAFFER’S NOTES Good evening and a warm welcome to Creasey Park, especially to the management, staff and representatives of Arlesey Town FC. I wish you all a pleasant evening with us and a safe journey home. Arlesey picked up a solid draw at home to Harefield on Saturday following an impressive 3-0 midweek victory, and so we are under no illusion of what a stringent test this evening will be for us, in the 3rd of 8 games to be played during October. I am writing these notes on Saturday evening directly after a very frustrating defeat at home to Newport Pagnell Town. Having watched the lads execute a game plan to the letter, in order to take what we all thought would be a commanding and deserved 2-0 score line into the 2nd half, we conceded the 4th penalty in 3 games which halved our lead at the break. The second half saw us concede another 3 very soft goals to only one in reply. As I said to the players after the full time whistle on Saturday, we cannot concede 4 goals against the 2nd place in the league and stand any chance of taking points from the game. That said, I also saw many positive points during the match. There were some excellent individual performances and the level of effort and work rate shown was very pleasing throughout. We simply need to continue to work hard on the training pitch and correct the errors in front of our own goal. I am very confident with the quality

and concentration of the squad, this is measurable and achievable. Also with this game only 3 days later, it gives the players an opportunity to get back on the horse (so to speak) There has been a bit of movement around the squad since my last Manager’s notes. Marius Patru (Paddy) has left us, along with Lessa, Tyrik and Dalitso, who has gone on loan to Unite MK. We have however signed Joe Hankins, a seasoned goal scorer from London Colney, along with Ollie Reagan and Harry Shepherd on loan from Walton Casuals. It is pleasing to see some of the injured lads starting to come back into the squad again. Seb Smaith has now made a full recovery, along with Jordan Boyce-Fuller and Kelvin Osei-Addo. Kai McArthur is still in a cast for a few more weeks before his rehab begins. Kachi Njoku and Joe Zunguzah is being treated for groin and knee problems respectively. We obviously hope that Kai, Kachi and Joe make speedy recoveries. So back to tonight’s game, we all hope you enjoy the football and can be the 12th man for us with your singing and clapping. Have a safe journey home and enjoy the game!

ARLESEY TOWN HISTORY The club was established in 1891. They initially played in the Biggleswade & District League, before joining the Bedfordshire County League in 1922. They were runners-up in the league’s first season, and runners-up in the subsidiary competition in 1923–24. After finishing bottom of Division One in 1925–26, they left the league before returning to Division One for the 1927–28 season. Although they left again after finishing bottom of Division One, the club rejoined the league in 1929, this time in Division Two. The club rejoined the (renamed) South Midlands League in Division Two in 1929–30, winning the Division at the first attempt and earning promotion to Division One. However, they were relegated back to Division Two at the end of the following season. Arlesey won the Division Two title in 1931– 32, but were not promoted and Division Two was not played the following season. They returned in 1936, winning a third Division Two title in 1936–37, resulting in promotion to Division One. Division One became the Premier Division in 1947. The club were Premier Division runners-up in 1950–51 and won the division the following season. They retained the league title in 1952–53, but left to join the Parthenon League in 1954, where they played for four seasons. In 1958 they switched to the Senior Division of the London League. After leaving the London League in 1960, the club returned to Division One of the South Midlands League in 1961.

Despite finishing in the bottom three of Division One in 1961–62, Arlesey were promoted to the Premier Division. They finished secondfrom-bottom of the Premier Division the following season and were relegated back to Division One. However, a third-place finish in 1963–64 resulted in an immediate return to the Premier Division. In 1982–83 the club transferred to the Premier Division of the United Counties League, which they won in 1984–85. However, rising costs forced the club to resign from the United Counties League in 1992, moving back to the Premier Division of the South Midlands League in 1991–92. The 1994–95 season saw the club win the Premier Division with a record 107 points, as well as beating Oxford City 2–1 in the final of the FA Vase at Wembley Stadium. Following the merger of the South Midlands League with the Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League, the club were placed in the Premier Division North, and following league reorganisation at the end of the season, became members of the Premier Division for the 1998–99 season. In 1999–2000 Arlesey won the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, earning promotion to Division Three of the Isthmian League. Their first season in the new division saw them win the title scoring an Isthmian League record 138 goals with a record 100+ goal difference, earning promotion to Division Two. In 2002 league reorganisation saw them placed in Division

ARLESEY TOWN HISTORY One North. They were transferred to the Eastern Division of the Southern League in 2004, before being moved back to Division One North of the Isthmian League in 2006. Another move in 2008 led to the club playing in Division One Midlands of the Southern League, which became Division One Central in 2010. The 2010–11 season saw the club win Division One Central, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 2011–12 Arlesey reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, where they lost 3–1 at Salisbury City. They repeated the feat the following season, losing 3–0 to Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena. The club were relegated back to Division One Central at the end of the 2014–15 season after finishing secondfrom-bottom of the Premier Division. The 2017-18 season proved a very difficult year with a season plagued by injuries and problems and indeed a terrible record of no league wins at home all season saw them unfortunately get relegated from the Southern League.

REPORTING IN

OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST NEWPORT PAGNELL TOWN A frantic, seesawing game saw Dunstable Town lose a two goal advantage to second placed Newport Pagnell Town. Dunstable got off to a great start, when a corner led to pinball in the Newport Pagnell penalty area, and Jack Harvey was in the right place at the right time to smash the Blues into an early lead. Newport Pagnell settled well though, and looked to get back into the game with a fifth minute Sam Parrish shot which saw Mackenzie Taylor scrambling across his goal, but ultimately sailed over the crossbar. The visitors again worked Taylor in the fifteenth minute when Jim Burnside shot low from fifteen yards, but the goalkeeper was equal to it, saving well with his feet. The Blues were still in charge though, and looked threatening going forward, Luke Little forcing a save after a Chris Stapleton through ball, but the outcome was moot in any case, with the linesman flagging Little offside. Mackenzie Taylor was again in action to keep Dunstable’s one-goal advantage before Kelvin Osei-Addo unleashed a vicious shot from over twenty yards which visiting goalkeeper Nick Bennion did well to tip onto the underside of the crossbar. With many looking to the linesman to see if the ball had crossed the line, Stapleton was on hand to remove any doubt by putting the rebound into the back of the net. Seconds before the whistle for half time, Newport Pagnell were awarded a penalty, which Ben Shephard confidently converted, giving his side a route back into the game at an ideal moment.

Within five minutes of the break, that route back into the game had been fully exploited as Newport Pagnell came out of the blocks with two goals, a second for Shephard and one for Burnside. The momentum in the second half was with the visitors, but Dunstable were not bowing, and an hour into the game, Eric Ameyaw found space in the box from a corner, but saw his header flash past the post. With a little under twenty minutes left to play, Newport Pagnell extended their lead with another close range goal, a second for Jim Burnside this time. Eight minutes later, a fast, flowing move culminated with Luke Little putting a wonderful cross right onto the head of Jack Harvey in the centre, who nodded in for his second of the game, a goal which ensured an exciting final ten minutes. The Blues pushed hard for an equaliser in the late stages, with Stapleton and Little both driving hard at the Newport Pagnell defence and asking questions, but ultimately the away side held out for the win.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE

A quick message to Ciaran; it was a pleasure to have you with us and hopefully we’ll see you again. If any of our youth section would like to be matchday mascots, please get in contact with Steve Lewington: Last week we had one of our youth players parent’s contact our youth engagement officer Steve Lewington to ask if Ciaran could be a matchday mascot. We gladly arranged this for him and he came down with his dad. Ciaran had a fabulous time walking out with skipper Chris Stapleton and coming on the pitch for a kick about. It was great to see him enjoying his special day out.

ON THIS DAY ...

15 OCTOBER 1949 - THE WORLD CUP COMES TO WALES On 15 October 1949, England and Wales met in the first World Cup qualifier for both teams, with England winning 1-4. The English and Welsh football associations had joined FIFA in 1906, but left in 1929, along with the other British associations, over a dispute about payment of amateur players. The rift prevented all of British teams from participating in the first three World Cups. The British rejoined FIFA in 1946. Rather than have them go through a separate qualification process, FIFA used the pre-existing British Home Championship as a qualification group, with the top two finishers advancing to the World Cup.

The teams met at Ninian Park in Cardiff, with England taking an early lead with a 22ndminute goal from Blackpool’s star forward, Stan Mortensen--the first England goal in a World Cup campaign. His fellow forward, Newcastle’s Jackie Milburn (pictured) then added a hattrick (29’, 34’, 66’) before Wales eventually got on the board with a late consolation goal from right winger Mal Griffiths. England and Scotland finished first and second in the table to progress to the World Cup, but Scotland withdrew because the head of the Scottish FA, George Graham, felt they should participate only if they won the BHC. England participated and were famously defeated by the United States.
