inside the boardroom a very happy New Year to all of you and a huge thank you for your incredible support A very warm welcome to the players, coaching staff, committee, and supporters of Arlesey Town for our first fixture of the New Year. We hope they enjoy their afternoon at Creasey Park and have a safe journey home. Secondly, a very happy New Year to all of you and a huge thank you for your incredible support this season. Not only are average gates up by 45% compared to last season, but there are also 84 individual owners of the Club, which is a very pleasing start to life as a Community Owned Club. Our presence in the non-league world is slowly growing. DTFCTV, superbly run by Brad & Abby now has 307 subscribers and our Twitter following has gone past 8K. It’s the type of growth that Matt set out to achieve when he became Treasurer and it’s a fitting testament to all the hard work committee colleagues put in, that halfway through the season the numbers are starting to look like where we wanted them to be. It’s a relief to be able to write today’s programme notes. Boardroom chatter after the Flackwell game was about the likelihood of a circuit breaker being introduced straight after Christmas. Thankfully that hasn’t happened so we can look forward to what I expect to be an exciting game of football this afternoon. We’ve had a two week lay off and come into this game on an unbeaten run of six games. That’s something that hasn’t happened before during my time as Club Secretary, so it was pleasing to go into the Christmas & New Year
period on the back of a very decent point against Flackwell Heath. There’s a resilience and sense of unity among the team that we hope will prepare them for the task ahead, not just for the remainder of this season but next season and beyond. One of the first things Joe said after his appointment was his desire to change the culture at the club. More experienced heads than mine nodded sagely but having never played the game I was somewhat in the dark. Thankfully my woeful ignorance didn’t last long & the light is now well and truly shining. But before I get too carried away, today will also be a tough test as Arlesey currently sit in 7th position and have the proud record of not dropping a point against us in the previous two seasons. Just like us they’ve also had a change of manager with Martin Standen replacing Chico Ramos. They are the Division’s 5th highest goal scorers and have the 3rd best away record, so another stern test awaits today. My final words are to thank Peter Bottom for achieving the fantastic target of raising £5K for the Cancer Unit at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. Peter’s put body and soul into this project and deserves all our thanks for his dedication. I know he would want me to pass on his thanks to everyone who has supported the cause by donating money, buying raffle tickets, and joining in sponsored walks. Enjoy the game and see you soon. Happy New Year to everyone associated with both Dunstable Town and Arlesey Town ahead of our 1st Fixture of 2022. A warm welcome to the management, players, committee members and supporters from Arlesey Town. It was unfortunate that our game against Crawley Green was postponed after several cases within the Crawley Green team. From a football perspective it’s been frustrating that we have been unable to get a run of games in December having only played twice. Obviously from a worldwide health perspective, safety and the lives of people is always of paramount importance and will always take priority over football. Like billions of people worldwide we all love our football, and it is great to be able to get back playing again and welcome you back to Creasey Park for another tough league encounter with Arlesey. Having watched so much football last season with no supporters I think I speak on behalf of everyone that football just isn’t the same without supporters. It is a pleasure to keep seeing our loyal supporters through the gate despite the ongoing pandemic and is certainly something we never take for granted. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again the support we have received continues to be outstanding so please keep it coming.

Today’s clash is a clash of 2 of the in-form teams in the Division with Arlesey having only lost 1 in their last 8 league outings. We also come into the game on the back of good form having not lost in our last 6 league games. Whilst we are pleased with our last 6 results, we understand there is a lot of work ahead of us and a need to improve on our last performance at home to Flackwell Heath. The Flackwell performance was our worst overall performance out of the last 6 games however there were still loads
31/12/2021 09:57:02
notes from the bench It is a welcome return to football and to be able to return to league action with all the uncertainty at present of positives to take from the game. We never gave up, we kept going and despite going down to 10 men were still able to get ourselves an equaliser which showed great character and resilience. I thought the performances of Dan Gould, J’ardell Stirling and Liam McCrohan were outstanding that kept us in the game under a period of sustained pressure. Our goal difference is improving with a +7 return in our last 6 games and a return of 15 goals scored which is also pleasing. I have always been a big believer that goals win you matches, clean sheets win you leagues so there is a real desire to improve our clean sheet ratios. It goes to show how far we have come in a short space of time that often the dressing room feels like a defeat when we get a draw. The current crop of players demand so much of themselves and each other which is a credit to them. We missed our captain Jamie Nicholls on the day and the influence he has on others around him. Our lads have worked incredibly hard over the Christmas break to stay sharp. We have had multiple players training on Christmas Day and Boxing Day which is testimony to the types of people we have here. Whilst at times it can be a welcome break to have rest periods it is frustrating when you have momentum in football to then get a sustained period without a game. We are hopeful of being able to pick from a fully fit squad barring the injury to Kelvin Osei-Addo. Hopefully we can avoid any Covid outbreaks within the group over the next few days. Every manager I speak to is in the same boat at present. Purely with my football head on the concern over losing players to Covid is ongoing and I do appreciate the pandemic goes far deeper than games of football. At present it
arlesey-print.indd 5
looks like we will be without Kelvin for a few weeks after his hamstring injury and we wish him well on his return to playing. One player’s disappointment is another players opportunity. I would like to make a special mention to both John Sonuga and Daniel Trif. As supporters you would have seen both players for several years here at Dunstable Town. Both John and Daniel have recently found themselves out of the starting 11 through no other reason than other players playing well and keeping their shirt. The way John and Daniel have conducted themselves has been exemplary. It can’t have been easy for either player who have seen a huge number of players depart the club during their time. You will no doubt have heard me go on and on about types of people and the importance of culture. John and Daniel personify the traits we want in players at the club. They are selfless, loyal, dedicated and 1st class characters and have a burning desire to get this club to where we all want it to be. They have never allowed their disappointment to manifest itself in a negative way and have been a massive credit to themselves, their families, and the football club. At the time of writing, we have a new date for the Crawley Green game which will now take place on the 22nd of January. It will mark the end of a busy week that sees us travel to Aylesbury Vale on the Saturday and then welcome Luton Town on the Tuesday night. It’s an old cliché in football however one we really believe in and that is take one game at a time and never get too far ahead of ourselves. I hope you all enjoy today’s game and thank every one of you for your ongoing support. Joe

Arlesey Town are celebrating 130 years, having been formed by a group of local people before the turn of the last century

L Before the Second World War, Soccer was played on a localised basis, and in common with many clubs in the area, Arlesey competed in the flourishing Biggleswade & District League and entered the Biggleswade Knock-out Cup. During the 1920’s, the club joined the Bedfordshire County League - which was later to become the South Midlands League. Arlesey originally played at ‘The Bury’ before moving to their former home, ‘Lamb Meadow.’ The ground took its name from ‘The Lamb,’ a former Public House situated near the site which, for many years acted as the club’s headquarters and changing rooms. The birth of the modern era is owed to the foresight of officials of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. They purchased the premises and became landlords for the princely sum of just £500 in 1948. Four years later, in 1952, an adjoining area was bought, and this is where the clubhouse used to stand. The story goes that two committee members
missed their train to Kings Cross and with time to kill, saw a notice in a local Estate Agent’s window for a forthcoming auction of the land. They returned the following week and purchased the said land for the clubhouse. The area lay unused for several years until the arrival of ‘Biggs Wall’ who negotiated with the club to build temporary offices and canteen facilities - which the Football Club then bought back, turning them into what was then, the clubhouse. The first competitive match under floodlights was played in January 1981 against the now defunct ‘Pirton FC’ and two months later the Blues played host to Luton Town for the official opening in front of over 1,000 spectators. Playing fortunes have fluctuated since the war and season 1950-51 saw the Blues finish as runners-up to Bletchley Town in the S.M.L. Premier Division. The following season the 1st XI lifted the championship crown, and

the second string were crowned S.M.L. Division Two champions with the Youth team winning three trophies. The 1952-53 season began North Beds Charity Cup final win over Biggleswade Town (the match was held over from the previous season), and ended with a second successive championship win, Arlesey amassing S.M.L. record 52 points. In February 1954, the developing Arlesey Town Colts, local players, reached the 4th round of the F.A. Youth Cup and were drawn away to Portsmouth. The 1950’s had seen the Blues compete in the South Midlands and Parthenon Leagues. Season 1968-69 saw one of Arlesey’s favourite sons in charge of team affairs; Roland Legate, (who played football professionally for Luton Town) took the helm as player-manager and during his four-year spell, he took the Blues to a league runners-up spot. The start of the 1975-76 season saw Legate return as manager and the trophies came with him, 3 Hinchingbrooke Cup successes, one Beds Senior Cup, the Biggleswade K.O Cup twice and the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy once. Supporting the Executive Committee’s wish to cross the pyramid to the United Counties League. With two indifferent terms in the U.C.L., Arlesey lifted the Premier Division crown in season 1984-85. With the rising cost of UCL travel and the attraction of more ‘local derbies’ in 1991-92 it was decided to resign from the United Counties League and cross to the familiar surroundings of the South Midlands League. A successful first year campaign saw the Blues finish in third place and in their second season finished sixth in the league and lifted the Premier Division Cup. The club also gained national recognition following a marvellous run in the FA Vase to the quarterfinals, with victories Flackwell Heath 2-0, Ware 1-0, Haverhill Rovers 2-1, Eastwood Hanley 2-1, Falmouth Town 5-3, and Oadby Town 2-1. In the quarterfinal the blues faced old U.C.L. foes Boston in a thrilling game and lost out to an injury time winner. With changes to support and playing staff for 1994/5 the results exceeded expectations. The South Midlands League championship was
won with a record 107 points, but even this memorable feat was eclipsed when Arlesey Town defeated Oxford City at Wembley Stadium in front of over 13,000 spectators to lift the F.A. Carlsberg Challenge Vase on May 13, 1995. On their way to the greatest day in the club’s history, the Blues had beaten Hoddesdon 2-0, a vengeful 2-1 victory at Boston, a 2-0 win at Barnstaple, a 1-0 home win over the holders Diss Town and a 3-0 quarter-final demolition of Cammel Laird before facing U.C.L. side Raunds Town in a two-legged semi-final. The first leg, played at Raunds, saw Arlesey beaten out of sight by a score of 3-0 and very few pundits gave them much chance of overturning the deficit in the return match the following week at Lamb Meadow. Three nil at 90 minutes and 5-0 after extra-time, including a penalty save by Arlesey ‘keeper Steve Young meant that the Blues were off to grace the most hallowed of turf! The Vase travelled home to Bedfordshire for the first time. In 1995/5 season saw the Blues crash out of the Vase at the first hurdle but the South Midlands League Championship Crown was retained. The season culminated in three Cup finals for the club; the 1st XI were runners-up to Ely City in the Hinchingbrooke Cup, the Under 16 Youth side were beaten East Anglian Youth Cup finalists while Peter Milton’s Reserve side lifted the S.M.L. Reserve Challenge Trophy. After finishing in third place the 1996/7 campaign ended with the Blues relinquishing the S.M.L. title. However, the Lamb Meadow trophy cabinet remained in a healthy position as they lifted the Beds Senior Cup (the first time since 1979) and lifted the Hinchingbrooke Cup (last won in 1982). May 1997 saw Robbie O’Keefe tender his resignation, moving on to a higher grade of football with Baldock Town. In just three seasons Arlesey Town had achieved national recognition with F.A. Vase success and two league championships, a County Senior Cup victory, and a Hinchingbrooke Cup triumph. For season 1997-98 team were unable to keep pace and their championship aspirations

soon evaporated. An FA Vase 3rd round exit occurred in Cornwall’s Porthleven in December and the Blues’ last chance of picking up any silverware disappeared at the hands of archrivals Stotfold who loosened Arlesey’s grip on the Hinchingbrooke Cup with a 2-0 semifinal victory. After a lengthy campaign the club finally received planning permission for a new ground just a few hundred yards along Hitchin Road. After a development project the club moved in on April 30th 1999, and are now able to boast some of the finest facilities in the area with a purpose built Members Bar, multi-purpose Function & Conference Suite, all-seater stand and training pitch. The first season at the new Hitchin Road ground began with nine straight Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division victories as Ironton’s men stormed to the top of the table. A mid-season blip in form threatened the side’s hard work but having secured the services of coach Alan Dawson, the Blues went from strength to strength and went on to lift their fifth South Midlands League Championship. A run in of eight consecutive victories culminated in a 2-0 triumph at Milton Keynes City on Thursday 4th May meant the Blues secured the championship. With their ground grading ‘Arlesey Town were promoted to the Ryman Isthmian League Division Three. The sale of Dave Kitson to Nationwide Football League Club Cambridge United halfway through the season, did little to upset their cause indeed, the signing of ex Stevenage Boro’ striker Neil Trebble boosted their season. A prolific striker, Trebble netted an amazing 18 goals from 17 starts and one wonders just how many he would have scored had he been with the Blues at the start of the season. A magnificent first season in the Ryman League, saw the club lose just two league matches (one at home and one away) as they raced away to win the Third Division Championship scoring an Isthmian League record of 138 goals and the Blues also gained the record of being the first club to attain a 100 + goal difference in the league’s 96-year history. The 2002/2003 season was a consolidation for the rapid successes of the previous years
and the highlight was an extended run in the FA Cup winning 4 away matches in reaching the fourth qualifying round. The reward was yet another away fixture, this time at Nationwide Conference club, Hereford United. Arlesey Town represented the Ryman League Division One north and after going behind to a sixth minute ‘soft’ goal, they more than matched their opponents in all departments, even having a goal disallowed. It was such a gallant performance that at the end of the tie, the relieved Hereford fans gave their guests a standing ovation. At the end of the 2002/3 Arlesey’s Hitchin Road ground hosted two EUFA Ladies qualifying fixtures including England versus Spain. It was seen as a just reward for all the hard work that had been done at the Club by many of its members in recent years. Season 2003/2004 saw Arlesey Town yet again in the national limelight following a fantastic run to the last 16 of the FA Trophy defeating on the way, both after away draws ‘Hayes FC’ from the Ryman Premier Division and ‘Dagenham & Redbridge FC’ from the Nationwide Conference league. This resulted in an away game with ‘Exeter City FC’ who had just been relegated from the football league. Although losing the game the blues gained respect with an outstanding performance. The season ended with Arlesey Town failing to gain promotion to the new premier structure on goal difference, but small consolation was gained when the Blues lifted the ‘Bedfordshire Senior Cup’ after defeating fellow Ryman League club outfit Leighton Town at Hitchin Road in May. In season (2004/05) Arlesey Town played in the Southern League Division One East and after the successful six-year reign of Nick Ironton it was a consolidation period. Because of the club’s success, visibility, and recognition most of the players moved to play in the ‘Conference League’ and premier league. After an indifferent start to the season Nicky Ironton decided to hand over the manager’s position to Jon Taylor, whom he had dealings with in the past. Jon imported a new team of players during November with the single objective of maintaining the club’s status within the DUNSTABLE TOWN v arlesey Town - 9

THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play

MATCH h REPORT saturday 18th december • SSMfl premier division creasey park • attendance 201 The game sprang into life in the final 15 minutes with two goals, one disallowed goal and an agonizingly close call with Kyle Faulkner’s piledriver hitting the side netting. In truth this was not a vintage Dunstable performance, but it said everything you need to know about a Joe Deeney team. There was maximum effort and a pride in playing for the badge and that “never say die” attitude instilled in the dressing room and on the training pitch. The first half was a well contested affair with both sides giving no quarter. Heath had the better chances and Dunstable were grateful to keeper, Dan Gould, pulling off a couple of important saves to keep the scores level at half time. Despite recent rain the pitch held up well and did not stop either side trying to play football. Flackwell Heath took the lead in the 75th minute and murmurs of “it was coming” were hard to disagree with. However, it galvanized the Blues who launched probing forays into their opponent’s half and were level 10 minutes later. The Heath’s opener, a header, superbly finished by Aiden Higgs at the far post, Higgs had only been on the field 4 minutes and squeezed his header home from a tight angle. Up until then it looked as though the Blues defensive back line might not be breached. While credit is due to the defence collectively, supporters were mentioning the efforts of Dan Gould, Liam McCrohan & J’Ardell Stirling as worthy of special mention. Stirling receiving the MoM award from the games sponsors, The Glider and Completely Sound.
Stirling, a shrewd acquisition from Step 3, Wingate & Finchley, played with a maturity and assurance which belied his 21 years. Head Coach, Joe Deeney, and Assistant, Kyle Durcan will have been delighted by the fight and determination all their players showed. Dunstable picked themselves up and got back on level terms when pacy substitute, Jack Percy, making his debut as a second half substitute, was pulled back when advancing on goal. The resulting free kick hit the wall and went out for a corner. Dan Naylor’s inch perfect corner was met firmly by Joe Sellers-West to score his 7th goal in just 11 starts. “Playing for the shirt” and “throwing bodies on the line” are two of football’s well known cliches and get bandied around liberally, but in this case, there is a palpable sense among the Creasey Park faithful, who again came out in their numbers, that Deeney & Durcan can both talk the talk and walk the walk and mean serious business. Most supporters agreed this had been a case of “a point won” as opposed to being two points lost. It’s always encouraging when you don’t play particularly well but still have the collective fight and determination to get a point which was very much the case today. A crowd of 201 braved the elements, pushing the home average up to 167, a 45% increase since last season and a pleasing vote of confidence for the Supporter / Community owned club and the appointment of Deeney & Durcan charged with bringing the good times back to Creasey Park. 3 January 1932 - When Giants Roamed The Earth On 3 January 1932, the New York Giants came back from an 8-3 deficit to win the league 9-8 on aggregate over the New Bedford Whalers. The Giants were owned by Charles Stoneham, who also owned the New York Giants baseball team. When he first acquired the football team in 1927, they were known as Indiana Flooring (and later, the New York Nationals), while another team in the league used the New York Giants name. When those Giants changed their name in 1931 to New York Soccer Club, Stoneham claimed the name for his team, who went on to win the Spring 1931 American Soccer League title. In the fall table, they finished as runners-up to New Bedford, setting up a home-and-away playoff to decide the league’s consolidated champions for the year. New Bedford hosted the first leg at their Battery Park ground on New Year’s Day, winning 8-3.
The teams then met at the Polo Grounds in New York City for the second leg two days later. There, the Giants took a 3-0 lead into the break with goals from Shamus O’Brien (20’), Bert Patenaude (23’), and Bart McGhee (30’). While McGhee had been with the team since 1925, both O’Brien and Patenaude were in their first seasons with the club, with O’Brien moving from the former New York Giants. Patenaude moved from the New York Yankees, which was a brief-lived merger between the Fall River Marksmen and the New York Soccer Club. Down 8-6 on aggregate at the start of the second half, New York drew level with goals from O’Brien (53’) and Jimmy Gallagher (67’). Gallagher, like McGhee, had been with the team since 1925, but had previously played for the other New York Giants team in 1924. Then, in the 80th minute, Patenaude scored again to put the Giants up 9-8, which ended up as the final score.
