inside the boardroom To go 14 SSML games unbeaten over a four-month period has been a remarkable achievement Good evening and a very warm welcome to Creasey Park. Tonight, sees us pitch our wits against Arlesey Town for the third time this season. It’s always a pleasure to welcome Dave Kitson, his committee colleagues, the coaching and playing staff and supporters from Arlesey Town, we wish them all an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home come the final whistle. Firstly, a huge thank you to DYSK Air Conditioning and to Dunstable Town U10 Tigers who are tonight’s match and match ball sponsors. Saturday saw us travel to New Salamis in Tottenham. Although we lost 3 -1 the players were rewarded with a standing ovation from the Regiment and the rest of our supporters at the end of the game. Joe promised us “sweat on the shirt” when he took over and there was plenty of that from the Team in an outstanding second half performance. Unfortunately, we started the first half slowly and went in at the break two nil down. A goal from Remell Stirling had the table topper’s backs against the wall. Kyle produced a trademark volley which the home keeper acrobatically palmed away, and man of the match Jack Percy’s diving header was a lick of paint away from scoring. Add to that an Ethan Creary thunderbolt which hit the woodwork, and you understand why our supporters gave them a standing ovation. To go 14 SSML games unbeaten over a four-month period has been a remarkable achievement, and Joe, Kyle and the players deserve nothing but praise. Next season though we will be looking for more runs like this
and taking points off the top teams. Off the field we started our second Friendship group on Thursday 10th March at the Dunstable Centre. Chums and Crumbs is a partnership with Vicky, Imaan and Ruby, the Social Prescribers from Titan PCN and SLL who manage the Dunstable Centre. Lee Nutley is the Club volunteer who heads up our part of the partnership. The first group saw 9 local people enjoy free activities, cups of tea, coffee and biscuits, and was a great success. The group is designed to cater for people who may feel lonely and socially isolated and want more human contact. We have more groups in the pipeline and show the ambition of the Club to be a force for good off the field as well as a force on it. We meet the costs thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and our owners. If you’re not already an owner of the Club please ask any of the Committee how to sign up or head over to the website. Finally, thanks as always for your incredible support this season. Our average home attendance this season is 179 and beats those when we were at Step 3 and Step 4. You’ve been loud and proud and played your part in being the 12th Man. With away numbers regularly increased, we’ve outnumbered home supporters on several occasions. Enjoy the match and see you on Saturday for the visit of Leverstock Green. It’s non-league day and we’re hoping to have League approval to make it a “pay what you want” game and have Jamaica Mi Crazy pay a welcome return.

Welcome to Martin, the management, players, and everyone associated with Arlesey Town for this evening’s game. The game has been rearranged after a previous attempt so it will be good to finally get the game played. It was only 10 days ago we played Arlesey in our league tie that saw us extend our unbeaten league run to 14 games. Unfortunately, since our last fixture against Arlesey we have had back-to-back defeats. Games against Hadley and New Salamis unfortunately saw us on the receiving end of 3-1 defeats. To go unbeaten in the League since November 6th until Hadley on Tuesday was a great effort from the players. Whilst it was a nice run losing 2 in 5 days has felt like an extremely long week and we look forward to getting back home tonight in front of our supporters in the cup. Both games were really good tests for our squad and whilst I despise losing games there were so many invaluable lessons for our relatively inexperienced group that will massively benefit us. The games against Hadley and New
4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town arlesey-print.indd 4
Salamis were contrasting despite the same score line. Hadley last Tuesday was a game for over 50 minutes I never thought we were in any danger at all. We took an early lead through another trademark volley from Kyle Faulkner. Kyle turned down an opportunity to move on earlier this week which was really pleasing. Kyle has only just turned 24 and we have loved having him here. He is eager and keen to improve his game and his loyalty once again further reiterates the direction we are looking to go as a group. We looked dangerous on the transition and could have extended our lead further with a couple of half chances. Dan Gould didn’t have a shot to save until Hadley’s first goal. I was disappointed with the manner of the 1st goal having had several bodies around the eventual goal scorer. We didn’t make contact and unfortunately, they equalised. Full credit to Hadley once they equalised, they went on the ascendency and in the end fully deserved their 3-1 victory. Last Saturday against New Salamis was the opposite. We didn’t turn up until half time really and full deserved to be 2-0 down going into the break. The frustrating thing again was despite being 2-0 down at half time we had hit the post and had several set piece opportunities which we didn’t capitalise on. We were naive, passive and myself and Kyle were thoroughly frustrated going in at half time. A half time break served with several home truths as well as a change in shape and personnel was required which we did. The 2nd half was like a completely different team. We came out with intent, were front footed with our press and really put it on New Salamis. We were excellent throughout the 2nd half, we caused several problems, had several chances, and got a deserved goal back
21/03/2022 21:05:04
notes from the bench Tonight is going to be another tough encounter with Arlesey, just like the previous two encounters through Remell Stirling. I was extremely proud of Remell. His attitude to work, his willingness to learn, listen and his desire to score really epitomised our belief in him. After that we were really on the ascendency. I felt an equaliser was getting closer and then we got a reality check when New Salamis scored their 3rd and crucial goal. That is the difference between the top teams in the division and where we are at present. Derek Asamoah gets 1 chance and took it extremely well and it was a real gut punch. Full credit to the players we never threw the towel in and kept going. We had some really good chances to get another goal back which we didn’t take, and in the end, New Salamis got the 3 points. The lessons we need to learn from both games is that if you don’t play well consistently for 90 minutes you get punished. I said when I took the job that my mantra is simple when we win it is 100% credit to the players and when we lose it is 100% my fault. Hindsight is a wonderful thing for obvious reasons and there are things in both games I would have done differently. The last 2 games have confirmed some important things to us as a Management team. Firstly, we are not a long way off from having a very successful team next season. Secondly, we need to add 3 or 4 to the group to help us next season. Our recruitment targets are identified, and we will ensure we add players to this group that will improve us for next season. Perspective is always important as a Manager but can be exceptionally hard due to the emotive nature of the job. I must remind myself that we are all learning the level, myself included. Success is never in a straight line and it is vital we park the 2 defeats, and we use the remaining 5 weeks of the season to make some vital decisions and get back to winning ways.
arlesey-print.indd 5
We have 7 league games remaining that will give us a further indication of where we are at and hopefully a few more cup games if we can beat Arlesey this evening. Tonight, is going to be another tough encounter with Arlesey just like the previous 2 encounters. We have a few injuries to key players but like we always say one player’s disappointment is another players opportunity to stake a claim. We have missed our influential Captain Jammers with his maturity and outstanding leadership on the pitch and hope to have him back shortly. Unfortunately, Liam McCrohan has an injured hamstring which is a big blow for us. Liam has been outstanding since he arrived. Losing players of his and Jammer’s calibre is never easy, and we wish them both a speedy recovery. A big thank you to all our travelling support to both Hadley and New Salamis. It continues to amaze us how many supporters travel to the games and the fanatical nature of our supporters. This coupled with our increases in home attendances continues to be great to see. We massively appreciate the emotional investment into our group of players and long may that continue. After losing both games and seeing our supporters waiting until the end of the game by the tunnel to applaud us all off the pitch speaks volumes of the relationship between us. We hope to give you something more to cheer this evening. Enjoy the game.

L Before the Second World War, Soccer was played on a localised basis, and in common with many clubs in the area, Arlesey competed in the flourishing Biggleswade & District League and entered the Biggleswade Knock-out Cup. During the 1920’s, the club joined the Bedfordshire County League - which was later to become the South Midlands League. Arlesey originally played at ‘The Bury’ before moving to their former home, ‘Lamb Meadow.’ The ground took its name from ‘The Lamb,’ a former Public House situated near the site which, for many years acted as the club’s headquarters and changing rooms. The birth of the modern era is owed to the foresight of officials of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. They purchased the premises and became landlords for the princely sum of just £500 in 1948. Four years later, in 1952, an adjoining area was bought, and this is where the clubhouse used to stand. Playing fortunes have fluctuated since the war and season 1950-51 saw the Blues finish as
runners-up to Bletchley Town in the S.M.L. Premier Division. The following season the 1st XI lifted the championship crown, and the second string were crowned S.M.L. Division Two champions with the Youth team winning three trophies. The 1952-53 season began North Beds Charity Cup final win over Biggleswade Town (the match was held over from the previous season), and ended with a second successive championship win, Arlesey amassing S.M.L. record 52 points. The 1950’s had seen the Blues compete in the South Midlands and Parthenon Leagues. Season 1968-69 saw one of Arlesey’s favourite sons in charge of team affairs; Roland Legate, (who played football professionally for Luton Town) took the helm as player-manager and during his four-year spell, he took the Blues to a league runners-up spot. The start of the 1975-76 season saw Legate return as manager and the trophies came with him, 3 Hinchingbrooke Cup successes, one Beds Senior Cup, the Biggleswade K.O Cup twice

and the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy once. Supporting the Executive Committee’s wish to cross the pyramid to the United Counties League. With two indifferent terms in the U.C.L., Arlesey lifted the Premier Division crown in season 1984-85. During the late 1980’s the Blues won the United Counties League, Premier Division Cup and a Beds Premier Cup final appearance against Luton Town. During the 1991 centenary year in the blues lifted the South Midlands Floodlight Cup with a fine victory over fellow U.C.L. side Irthlingborough Diamonds, who went on to become Rushden & Diamonds in the football league. With changes to support and playing staff for 1994/5 the results exceeded expectations. The South Midlands League championship was won with a record 107 points, but even this memorable feat was eclipsed when Arlesey Town defeated Oxford City at Wembley Stadium in front of over 13,000 spectators to lift the F.A. Carlsberg Challenge Vase on May 13, 1995. The Vase travelled home to Bedfordshire for the first time. For season 1997-98 team were unable to keep pace and their championship aspirations soon evaporated. An FA Vase 3rd round exit occurred in Cornwall’s Porthleven in December and the Blues’ last chance of picking up any silverware disappeared at the hands of archrivals Stotfold who loosened Arlesey’s grip on the Hinchingbrooke Cup with a 2-0 semifinal victory. After a lengthy campaign the club finally received planning permission for a new ground just a few hundred yards along Hitchin Road. The first season at the new Hitchin Road ground began with nine straight Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division victories as Ironton’s men stormed to the top of the table. A mid-season blip in form threatened the side’s hard work but having secured the services of coach Alan Dawson, the Blues went from strength to strength and went on to lift their fifth South Midlands League Championship. A run in of eight consecutive victories culminated in a 2-0 triumph at Milton Keynes City on Thursday 4th May meant the Blues secured the championship. With their ground grading ‘Arlesey Town were promoted to the Ryman Isthmian League Division Three. The sale of
Dave Kitson to Nationwide Football League Club Cambridge United halfway through the season, did little to upset their cause indeed, the signing of ex Stevenage Boro’ striker Neil Trebble boosted their season. A prolific striker, Trebble netted an amazing 18 goals from 17 starts and one wonders just how many he would have scored had he been with the Blues at the start of the season. A magnificent first season in the Ryman League, saw the club lose just two league matches (one at home and one away) as they raced away to win the Third Division Championship scoring an Isthmian League record of 138 goals and the Blues also gained the record of being the first club to attain a 100 + goal difference in the league’s 96-year history. The 2002/2003 season was a consolidation for the rapid successes of the previous years and the highlight was an extended run in the FA Cup winning 4 away matches in reaching the fourth qualifying round. The reward was yet another away fixture, this time at Nationwide Conference club, Hereford United. Arlesey Town represented the Ryman League Division One north and after going behind to a sixth minute ‘soft’ goal, they more than matched their opponents in all departments, even having a goal disallowed. It was such a gallant performance that at the end of the tie, the relieved Hereford fans gave their guests a standing ovation. Season 2003/2004 saw Arlesey Town yet again in the national limelight following a fantastic run to the last 16 of the FA Trophy defeating on the way, both after away draws ‘Hayes FC’ from the Ryman Premier Division and ‘Dagenham & Redbridge FC’ from the Nationwide Conference league. This resulted in an away game with ‘Exeter City FC’ who had just been relegated from the football league. Although losing the game the blues gained respect with an outstanding performance. The season ended with Arlesey Town failing to gain promotion to the new premier structure on goal difference, but small consolation was gained when the Blues lifted the ‘Bedfordshire Senior Cup’ after defeating fellow Ryman League club outfit Leighton Town at Hitchin Road in May. Darren Hay took on the team management during the early stages of 2006/2007 season, when Jon left for personal reasons, with Mike

Brooks as the assistant manager and coach and they put together a very young and eager team for the coming 2007 campaign. This included both experienced senior players supporting by young players who broke into the first team towards then end of the previous season. Arlesey Town finished in the bottom half of the Ryman league with Matt Corbould as the manager and a very young side. With a completely new management structure in place and a new Management team, of: Gary King Director of Football, Lee Cowley Manager, Zema Abbey Assistant Manager, and Darren Staniforth as Coach, Arlesey played the season with renewed style and passion, finishing the season in 9th place in the League and getting through to the first-round proper of the F.A. Trophy and lifting the Beds Senior Cup in the last game of the season. Season 2010-11 saw them staying in the Zamaretto Southern League in the new “Central Division” and saw them looking forward with a lot more hope and even more optimism, with the whole team showing great experience and growing in strength and confidence on and off the field all the time. The season in which Arlesey were in the top echelons all season finished in dramatic stile as they won 10 games on the bounce, had 9 points deducted on the day they thought they had won the league away at Hayes and then beat long term archrivals and near neighbours Hitchin Town on Hitchin’s own ground on their last game of the season to be finally crowned League Champions.
edge as Arlesey missed out on the play-off spot of the Premier Div by just a single point. Although promotion was narrowly missed the Red Insure League Cup was won in a 2 legged final v Frome to bring home yet another impressive piece of Silverware. As the Abbeys left to take up management elsewhere, the club had a change of Management and in November 2013 Rufus Brevett arrived to take the club forward. Although his 1st season was “steady” a very difficult season in 2014-15 saw several changes of management as results failed to materialise a Rufus gave way after Christmas to ex manager Nick Ironton but again this failed to halt the slide and he in turn gave way during the season as Zema Abbey came back with brother Nathan as joint managers, Although this led to an improvement in playing style but they were unable to prevent relegation in the end back to the Central Division. The new season saw them struggle to get to grips with the style of the new division and early form showed them propping up the division, but a second half resurgence saw them push up the division to finish in a mid-table position. Season 2017-18 proved a very difficult year with a season plagued by injuries and problems and indeed a terrible record of no league wins at home all seasons saw the club unfortunately get relegated from the Southern League.
This was followed soon after by beating Biggleswade Town to retain the Beds Senior Cup at Luton Towns Kenilworth Road ground to give Arlesey a League and Cup Double and see them promoted to the new Evo-Stick Southern League Premier Division, a truly tremendous season. The first season in the Premier League was seen as a settling in period targeting staying up and a good cup run, both ambitions were achieved with the club reaching the F.A. Cup 1st round proper for the first time in their history. The second season again saw a good FA Cup run that went again to the 1st round proper before it ended at the Ricoh Stadium against Coventry City. The season finished on a knife DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town - 9

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE! arlesey-print.indd 25

young guns.
it is coming to the business end of the season Our under 14s Lions sadly lost to a very good Arlesey Town in the semifinals of the County Cup. A great achievement for Gary, Joe and the lads who also still are in with a chance of retaining their Chiltern Youth League Division 1 title.
Again, we are on the lookout for help with our youth committee if anyone has a skill who thinks could help us, please get in touch with our youth secretary kristy.dunstabletownfc@gmail.com
The under 14s Tiger are in a great position in the Chiltern Youth League Division 2. Let’s hope Karl and the boys can get over the line come the end of the season. Also our under 12s Phoenix have three games remaining and showed their class last week giving league winners Wixam Wanderers a guard of honour but got back to winning ways with a fine 5-3 win against Brickhill Wanderers. Another fine moment as one of our youth players George missed his first game of the season for the under 12s Phoenix, due to Covid but after their game against Brickhill the team video called George and the smile on his face was a great to see.

saturday 19th march • SSMfl premier division coles Lane • attendance 87 • Andrew Madaras Anyone who’d popped their head round the corner of Coles Park at ten to five on Saturday afternoon and seen the Dunstable Town players being enthusiastically applauded from the pitch by the travelling supporters may be forgiven for thinking that they’d produced the day’s biggest upset and defeated the League leaders. Unfortunately, they hadn’t but a barnstorming second half had seen a sensational display of high tempo attacking football which should have brought greater reward than it did. The Blues had gone into the break two goals down having made uncharacteristic defensive errors in the first 20 minutes and had looked out of sorts. Missing inspirational skipper Jamie Nicholls, who was still injured, the home team had taken full advantage and could have been a goal up within the first couple of minutes with a ball that rolled across the line. Dan Gould managed to keep the deficit down to only two goals with some fine saves and Ethan Creary was desperately unlucky not to reduce the deficit with a free kick which rebounded off the post. To add to the Blues woes, Liam McCrohan who has barely put a foot wrong all season, limped off after half an hour with a hamstring injury. Dan Trif came on and put in another big performance.
transformed team in the second half. This time it was the home side who struggled to cope with wave after wave of blue shirts, a high press and being given no time on the ball. This was more like what we’d come to expect from the Team, and just before the hour mark, the travelling faithful were duly rewarded when Dan Trif played a clever ball through to the energetic Remell Stirling who took the ball beyond the reach of the advancing keeper to slide the ball home. Half an hour still to play and game on. Kyle Faulkner volleyed and was denied by the acrobatics of the home keeper while a diving header from the man of the match, Jack Percy, was a lick of paint away from being the goal of the game. The home side were against the ropes and needed a lengthy interval to tie a bootlace to slow the pace of the game & draw breath. Against the run of play they broke and former football league and Ghana International, Derek Asamoah showed all the experience in the world to place the ball beyond Dan Gould. Asamoah may have been the oldest player on the pitch at 40 years old, but you’d never have guessed it. This was his 22nd goal in just 27 games for New Salamis this season and took the game beyond Dunstable’s reach.
Whatever words of motivation and encouragement were used by Blues supremos, Joe Deeney & Kyle Durcan at half time, clearly had the desired effect. The Blues were a totally DUNSTABLE TOWN v Arlesey Town - 35

22 March 1888 - Thank You, Mr. McGregor On 22 March 1888, the Football League was founded by Scotsman William McGregor, then director of Aston Villa. The original twelve members were Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Today, the Football League oversees levels two through four in the English pyramid - the Championship, League One, and League Two. Teams promoted from the Championship enter the Premier League, while teams relegated from League Two compete in the Football Conference.
McGregor first proposed the idea in a letter to the clubs dated 2 March, proposing a meeting in London. That first meeting on 22 March was “informal,” with a formal meeting following on 17 April. The league’s first season began a few months later on 8 September 1888. Prior to the formation of the Football League, the individual clubs in England scheduled their own fixtures. With the League, however, each club played the other clubs twice - once home and once away - earning two points for a win and one point for a draw. Preston North End claimed the first league title.

A lovely large, thatched house formed from three old cottages dating back to 1805 when it opened as a pub. If you are traveling via the village of Ickleford, we would recommend a stop at the Old George, a 17th century country pub in the centre of the village. A tunnel runs from the pub to St Katharine’s church nearby. There is a lounge bar with an inglenook fireplace and lots of beams and it also stocks Greene King ales.
