FROM THE BOARDROOM Good evening and welcome back to Creasey Park for our fixture against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. We welcome their players, officials, and supporters and look forward to an exciting fixture. On Saturday we nearly got over the line against Biggleswade. Surely our fortunes are going to change!? A goal disallowed for offside , where subsequent footage indicates that Joe Hankins was level at worst. This would have resulted in a deserved 3-0 advantage. A controversial sending off that even had our opponents puzzled , and then a speculative cross that landed in the far top corner for Biggleswade’s equaliser. Oh well, we go again, in the knowledge that our rewards will surely come. We all feel the passion of the encounter but two events put the game we love into perspective. Firstly, late last week ,we received the very sad news that Karl O’Gorman, a longtime supporter of the ‘Blues’, had passed away after a long and brave fight against cancer. I spoke to him not a few days earlier about his attendance at our Quiz night ,and he was still hoping to bring a team. It was not to be, and we send our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time, to his family and friends. We will be acknowledging his passing in a more formal way at a later date. Karl will be greatly missed. Secondly, at this time of Remembrance , we continue to acknowledge the sacrifice that many have made and continue to
make, so that we may enjoy the freedoms that we so often take for granted. ‘We will remember them’. On Saturday evening , following the Biggleswade game, we enjoyed our second Quiz Night at Creasey Park. With 10 teams competing there was some excellent competition , good food, and more than a few smiles. Thank you for supporting this event, and for sponsors and individuals who donated to our Prize Raffle. We look forward to more events that hopefully will suit all tastes. If you like what we are doing both on and off the field, please spread the word . NonLeague football has a very special charm and no little skill. The more that attend, the better the atmosphere, the more encouragement the team receive that (you can be sure) leads to encouraging results. The players really love the special ‘Blues’ support . Let’s add to it! Finally, enjoy the game, cheer loud, and don’t forget we are at home again on Saturday as we entertain Crawley Green.

This month, in association with local education and training centre Develop EBP, we will be collecting warm clothes and toiletries for Luton based charity, NOAH Enterprise. As part of Develop’s learners social inclusion project, they are collecting for NOAH and we at Dunstable Town are keen to assist them and bolster their donation. Clean, new and gently-used clothing of all kinds are helpful. Underwear, t-shirts and socks, new and gently-used jeans and shoes, and professional clothing for those looking for work or re-entering the workforce. Warm outerwear, coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves, and sleeping bags are also in need. Many service users arrive at NOAH each morning looking to have a wash, clean their teeth and have a shave. Items most welcome include razors, toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, hand cream, shampoo and feminine hygiene products. Please bring your donations to our home games during November. (12th November v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, 16th November v Crawley Green and 30th November v Leverstock Green)
GAFFER’S NOTES Good evening and a warm welcome to Creasey Park, especially for the management, staff, players and supporters of Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. I hope you all have a pleasant evening with us and a safe journey home. Having both teams showing similar results for the season so far, we are under no illusion that tonight is both important and a very tough challenge. One in which we are fully prepared and excited about. Albeit the Dynamos had a rebirth over the summer period, I recall 2 of the most memorable fixtures of last season were against Aylesbury. First was an incredible 1-6 defeat, followed by a match in March at Aylesbury where we played in the strongest wind that I have ever experienced in football. I had never seen a team conceding a corner directly from a goal kick before! I sincerely hope that the recent weather conditions don’t play any part in tonight’s match. Back to this season, I think it would be fair to say that our recent performances have not reflected the results. Saturday’s match away to Biggleswade Utd was another example of a strong technical and tactical display from the lads, however a few key controversial moments within the game has turned a victory into only a point. Obviously the lads were disappointed with going down to 10 men and then conceding another very late goal, however for every incident of adversity that happens, the
squad is becoming stronger and with a determination get back to winning ways. There has also been some strengthening to the squad since my last manager’s notes. We have added Ollie Reagan, a strong centre midfielder along with a quick winger in Craig Packham. We have also secured the services of Harry Sheppard on loan from Walton Casuals. All three have been a useful and necessary addition to the squad, especially considering the volume of fixtures at this time of year. It is also pleasing to see that some of our injured players are showing signs of improvement. Kai McArthur has recently had his leg cast removed and has started rehabilitation on his fractured ankle. Kachi Njoku has also been working with our Sports Therapist and I’m confident that we will be seeing him again soon. Finally Cedric Ibara has returned to training and will be looking to get some match sharpening minutes soon. As always thank you for all of your support! Please keep clapping and cheering, it always gives us all a massive lift! So let’s get this on and enjoy the game!

AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS HISTORY Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football. AylesburyFC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone,
Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard working committee fought hard to establish. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the
AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS HISTORY FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006.
Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognized in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last ‘level five’ team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued,
becoming ‘Double Winners’ Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC had their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league the 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions, but had the consolation of their first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016. In 2018/19 Scott Reynolds was appointed manager and when he resigned midway through the season it was left to Paul Bonham to take control but because of ground grading issues the Southern League made the decision to relegate the club.

REPORTING IN
OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST BIGGLESWADE UNITED For the second consecutive week Dunstable Town conceded a late equaliser, having earlier led the game by two goals. Despite a slow start, the home team had the first clear chance of the game when Lorrell Smith was fed a through ball, but his low shot was equaled by the foot of Dunstable goalkeeper Dan Gould. The resulting corner seemed to bear witness to a lack of height in the home team, with a clever corner delivered along the ground resulting in a blocked shot. Within the space of five minutes Biggleswade found themselves two down, the first blow being struck when captain Seb Smith headed in from a corner in the fourteenth minute, the away team’s first chance of the game. Having gained the lead, Dunstable came alive and went in search of a second, and some fine work down the flank from Daniel Trif saw a deflected cross arrive at the feet of Chris Stapleton, who had all the time and space needed to fire into the bottom corner. Between the two goals, Joe Hankins had a shot blocked which led to a Biggleswade counter attack, but led to nothing thanks to a fine last-ditch tackle from Eric Ameyaw. The Blues’ pressure continued, and a Stapleton cross was nodded in by Joe Hankins, but the linesman’s flag was on hand to deny a three goal lead. Trif was again proving difficult to hand down the right, and another of his crosses found Hankins, who controlled, turned neatly and shot low, only to see the home goalkeeper Garan Gordon-Stearn get down well and turn the ball onto the post. Only minutes later United were back in the game courtesy of a follow-up
shot from Lorrell Smith after Carl Chambers saw his effort saved. The Blues were quickly looking to restore their two goal cushion, and before half time, a Dan Blackman long ball saw the United keeper come to meet the ball but completely miss it, allowing Hankins to control and direct a shot on target, but the ball was cleared literally at the last second by a recovering defender. Biggleswade came out with a fresh impetus for the second half, and quickly forced Gould into an unconventional save, deflecting the ball over the bar with his feet. Increasingly slippery conditions and some erratic refereeing began to become a factor. Gould faced a busy second half, but when Seb Smith was booked after what seemed a well-timed challenge, the free kick from a dangerous position did not require the goalkeeper’s attention. A combination of the rain and Gordon-Stearn in the United goal gifted Dunstable a chance to reestablish their two goal lead when the ‘keeper sliced a kick from a backpass high in the air and with Chris Stapleton ready to head into the empty net, Gordon-Stearn frantically punched the ball away and cleaned out Stapleton in the process. To have the decision go their way was a big let off for the home side. Having weathered the pressure of the second half well, despite a strange red card for Hankins with thirteen minutes left to play, the equaliser did eventually come when Kieran Igbanoi’s cross found its way directly into the back of the net.

ON THIS DAY ...

12 NOVEMBER 1944 - GUNNAR SHOOTS. AND SCORES. SEVEN TIMES. On 12 November 1944, striker Gunnar Nordahl matched a Swedish league record by scoring seven goals in one match. And nobody else has done it since. From the beginning of his professional career, Nordahl was a prolific scorer, with 124 goals in 118 league appearances for with Hörnefors IF (1937-40) and Degerfors IF (1940-44). In 1944, he moved to IFK Norrköping where he proceeded to win four consecutive Allsvenskan titles. En route to the first one, he delivered his record-matching performance against Landskrona BoIS. The day’s first score fell to Eric Holmqvist, who put Norrköping up 1-0 in the 5th minute. Five minutes later, Nordahl started his run, scoring seven straight goals in the 10th, 21st, 24th,
27th, 41st, 46th, and 79th minutes. His brother Knut Nordahl added one in the 89th minute before Landskrona’s Gunnar Anderberg took meager consolation with a goal in the 90th minute. Nordahl’s haul matched that of Arne Hjertsson, who had just set the mark in June of the previous year in a match for Malmö FF against Halmstads BK. Since Nordahl, however, nobody else has managed to repeat the feat. Nordahl eventually moved to AC Milan in 1949 and scored 210 goals from the Rossoneri in 257 league appearances. He scored an additional 15 goals for Roma (1956-58) and is still Serie A’s second-top goalscorer of all time, behind Silvio Piola.
