inside the boardroom It’s a pleasure to welcome Steve Bateman and his staff, the players, committee, and supporters of Aylesbury Vale Dynamos FC Good evening, everyone. It’s also a huge pleasure to introduce Joe Deeney as our new Head Coach. Joe beat off intense competition from over twenty experienced and qualified candidates. He has managed at Step 2 and currently coaches Luton Town’s A Level Academy side, Luton Town Cedars. He was at Kenilworth Road for 24 years before taking on the Assistant Manager’s job at Oxford City for two years before taking over as Manager of Hemel Hempstead Town. Joe’s backroom staff of Kyle Durcan as Assistant Head Coach, Rob Sinclair as Player/ Coach & Anthony Christophi as 1st Team Coach are all experienced and eager to work with the players on the training pitch and improve results in matches. Joe’s appointment is our statement of intent and marks a line in the sand to say Dunstable Town are back. His ambitions and vision for the Club matched our own and we believe he has the experience and the skills to help us climb away from the bottom of the League. Joe’s appointment came following Gareth Jackson’s resignation last month. Gareth’s work for the Club cannot be underestimated. The history books will show he was one of the coaches and fans who helped save the Club in 2017 and was part of the team that rebuilt the Club as initially fans’ run club and then helped with the transition to a Community and Fan owned Community Benefit Society.

Successive squad rebuilds at the start of every season followed by Covid related premature end of seasons just when his teams were starting to click and put a run of results together were cruel blows. We all wish Gareth well for the future and thank him for his vital contribution in the Club’s survival. A couple of dates for your diary. On Thursday evening our U18’s take on Leverstock Green U18’s. Kick off is 7.45 pm. Admission is £3 for adults, £2 concessions. On Tuesday 26th October we take on Leighton Town here at Creasey Park. DTFC Owners / Blue Card holders will receive 5% discount off all food and drink purchased at the bar in the Clubhouse between 6pm and 7pm, and 20% discount from Jamaica Mi Crazy. Finally, we have a Quiz Night booked for Friday 29th October at Creasey Park. Entry is £5 per person, with half the money raised going to the winning team. from the bench We come into the game off the back of a busy first week in charge as a Management team. Welcome to Steve, his staff, committee members and players from Aylesbury Vale Dynamos ahead of our clash this evening. We come into the game off the back of a busy first week in charge as a management team. I have been personally humbled by the reaction of everyone associated with Dunstable Town. The welcome from the Directors and committee as well as playing staff has been great and much appreciated by us as a management team. The drive and determination from people at the club further reiterates our decision to take this job on and bring success back to Dunstable Town. 10 games in and unfortunately the league table doesn’t lie. We understand the challenges we face and the need to improve results on the pitch. We are working relentlessly at present to create a culture of excellence on and off the pitch that in the long term will yield success on the pitch. We have had a training session and a game to assess the group and analyse where we need to strengthen. Retention is as critical as recruitment, and it is imperative we retain players that fit the culture we want to create as well as add players that will improve the group.

that into action over the next few weeks. As with any change to structure in an organisation these things take a period of adjustment. Players getting used to the demands from us and us assessing where we are at. We can talk about philosophies but sometimes it comes down to the basics of everyone working hard and doing their individual jobs. There is no magic wand, unfortunately it comes down to hard work and sticking together. We are up for the challenge and look forward to implementing our way of playing over the next few months and put smiles back on the faces of our Dunstable Town fans. We fully appreciate the welcome from everyone at the club. Our immediate aim is to get results on the board and start moving up the table.

We were disappointed with the result and especially 1st half performance on Saturday at Harefield. They had a lot of good, seasoned players that on the day punished us ruthlessly. At 3-0 down at half time I was pleased we didn’t throw the towel in and kept going until the end. We spoke about the elements we need to improve as a side and look forward to putting DUNSTABLE TOWN v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos - 5

Aylesbury Vale Dy opposition spotlight

Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first

and senior divisions. Sadly, Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five

CLUB INFO

NICKNAME: The Dynamos FOUNDED: 1930s youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, some 200 players being registered, this also including Stocklake Ladies. In 2000 four youth teams won league and cup honours, whilst the senior team went on to win the Aylesbury District Cup, the Field Shield and ADL Premier Division runners up. At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hardworking committee fought hard to establish. Another award was gained for the match day

programme in recognition of how much the club was developing. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006.

‘Double Winners’ Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central.

Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. After Christmas the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi-professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone. Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last ‘level five’ team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters, and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus.

the 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season

Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming

Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semifinal to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league

In 2018/19 after ten seasons in the Southern League the club was relegated back to the South Midlands League after a difficult period for the club. Bedgrove Dynamos Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12’s Aylesbury & District League (ADL), but went on to win the 13’s & 14’s league in consecutive

years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad, and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona’s trophy room. At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8’s through to under 18’s.

12’s, represented in two other cup finals, won 3 league titles, gained 6 promotions in total and all teams finished in the top 6 to the fair play awards for their respective leagues. In the last 20 seasons, across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times. In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football at the highest possible level.

At the end of the season 2001/02 the club managed to win the coveted Berks and Bucks Cup at under 14’s, the Mayor’s Cup at under

MATCH REPORT saturday 9 august harefield united 4-0 Dunstable Town Scott Sinclair became the management team’s first signing. He was busy and industrious in the centre of the park before injury forced his substitution at half time. By that time though Dunstable were three goals down and despite a much better second half where they hit the post and had several good spells of concerted pressure ended up on the wrong end of a four nil score line. Harefield Utd were worthy winners and had a good blend of experience and youth. Their 2 -1 victory over table topping Leighton Town in midweek was clearly no freak result. Dunstable were backed by another healthy number of away supporters who despite the disappointing result stayed behind at the end to clap the players off the pitch. In one of Manager Joe Deeney’s first changes, the captain’s armband was worn by Enoch Mensah who urged his team mates on as if he did the job every week. The game kicked off under clear blue skies and an unseasonal mid 60’s temperature. It was the Hares though who were out of the traps first and nearly went ahead in the first minute with Dunstable players and supporters relieved to see this early effort hit the post. That scare over the game became an evenhanded contest in the early stages until Harefield went ahead on the quarter hour and five minutes later went further ahead from the penalty spot. Dunstable were then on the back foot as Harefield pressed forward with the Dunstable midfield and defence forced into a rearguard action looking to break down the flanks using the speed of Gill and Trif.

You couldn’t question the commitment, desire or work rate of the Team but Harefield were in no mood for charity and their control of the game grew stronger and saw them score again on 37 minutes to go into the break three goals ahead. For the third consecutive game, Bobby Armstrong cleared from the goal line just before referee Adam Steele’s half time whistle The Dunstable players and coaching staff sprinted from the pitch to regroup and plan for the second half. Dunstable came out for the second half with a renewed sense of purpose and urgency. The third goal made it something of a mountain to climb in the second half, but they battled away. Base camp established they took to the foothills in numbers and began pressing hard to find a way through. Jimmy Hartley, making his debut as a second half sub for the injured Sinclair, was in the thick of the action and asked questions throughout the half. It was Hartley’s effort which hit the post and on two occasions last-minute defending when Stapleton was ready to pull the trigger saw the home side keep their goal intact. However, the final goal of the day went to the home side ten minutes before the final whistle. While the score line may have been a little flattering, Harefield were worthy winners on the day. The hugely experienced ex QPR striker, Richard Pacquette added to his Harefield tally to make it 11 goals from 8 starts and ex Oxhey Jets man Louis Bircham added to his tally to make it 6 goals from 6 starts this season. World Mental Health Day 10 October 2021

It’s a condition that will affect one in four of us at some stage in our lives. It can strike you when you least expect it to and has no respect for gender, sex, class, religion, race or age. For some it can be a response to a stressful life event whether it is a bereavement or divorce but for others it may have much deeper roots in upbringing and traumas experienced in formative years or have a background in genetics or the environment. For some people the mere effort of getting out of bed in the morning and facing the day ahead can be as daunting as the thought of climbing Everest would be for most of us. This is not just feeling fed up or upset, this is Churchill’s famous “Black Dog”, this is a sky full of dark clouds with no sunshine appearing day after day, week after week and month after month. This is the feeling that your life has no value and is worthless. This is life without happiness, pleasure or meaning. The pervasive and intrusive thoughts that the world would be a better place without you being a part of it and your family and friends equally so, cause nearly six thousand people to take their own lives every year in the UK with many more times that number who attempt unsuccessfully to end their lives and an even greater number tormented by the thoughts of doing so. For others the terrifying thoughts that other people want to do us harm, sometimes the people we love, care for, and trust the most or the experience of hearing voices and sounds that other people don’t or the visual and tactile

sensory disturbances that can make us feel vulnerable, exposed and alone. There’s no single cause for mental ill-health and no single cure. Many people will experience one episode of ill-health but for others it can be a lifelong condition that will require a combination of talking therapies and prescribed medication. For the past four years, Dunstable Town FC have championed the work that Mind BLMK do in our local community. We’ve put their logo on the front of our playing kits, raised awareness by placing advertising boards around the ground, raised funds and offered free training sessions. We now have the Mind BLMK logo on the back of our shirts along with the tagline “We’ve got your backs” This season we’ve joined the CALM Collective (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and work in support of the Charity and on the local front we support Minds2gether which is a mental health peer support group. Every Monday we now have our own support group with United Minds thanks to the very generous support of The Glider and Asda Dunstable. We have a Mental Health Advocate helping support the Club in this field. We may only be a small club but we have big ambitions to raise awareness of mental health problems, remove the stigma associated with becoming unwell, and continue our work as part of our Community Benefit Society status to make mental health awareness part and parcel of the Club’s DNA.

young guns.

Dunstable Town FC U14 Lions start the season strongly Following up the invincibles of last season, was always going to be a challenge but the young blues have made a strong start to the season with a 100% record so far. The squad has seen a number of changes with a number of players moving on and with Jake and Kian heading off to join MK Dons and Arsenal respectively, needless to say the club is very proud of them and we all wish them well. Team manager, Gary Rogers had his eye on a number of summer transfer targets and landed some major signings with Archie joining as goal keeper allowing Callum to revert to the defence after an outstanding season between the sticks. Theo and Samuel further strengthened the team, also two former blues returned with Dillon the team’s record scorer passing 100 appearances, and Ethan who has already netted 6 times. Kai has started where he left off with 6 goals and is joined at the top of the scoring charts by

Aamir who is once again finding form. Matt has become the long throw specialist and along with Micheal provides a robust presence protecting the defence. Eoin and Hammad have been as consistent as ever at the back with Darren, Charlie, Joe and Buddy providing creativity through the midfield, Josh has returned from injury to dribble his way through opposing defences. After 4 wins from 4 league games the boys are joint top with familiar rivals Tattenhoe, the stand out performance so far was a 0-5 away win at Flitwick Golds, and despite a mediocre performance against Wooton the boys dug in and strong team spirit saw them turnaround a 3-2 deficit to run in 4-3 winners with 2 goals in the last 5 minutes. A big win in the 2nd round of the county cup against Biggleswade could be the start of an exciting cup run.

in footbal history..

12 October 2003 - Künzer’s Golden Goal On 12 October 2003, Germany won their first Women’s World Cup, beating Sweden 2-1 in the final with a golden goal from substitute Nia Künzer. The final continued a growing rivalry between the two teams. Sweden won their first meeting in a major tournament, beating the Germans in the 1991 FIFA World Cup third-place match, then again in the group stage in 1995. But since then, it had been all Germany, who defeated Sweden twice in the final of the UEFA Women’s European Championship (1995 and 2001), took them out in the Euro semifinals in 1997 and beat them in the first round in 2001. In the 2003 World Cup Final, played before a crowd of 26,137 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, Sweden played a strong

defensive game, shutting down a high-powered German attack that saw them breeze through the group stage with a goal differential of +11. Although the German side included forward Birgit Prinz, the tournament’s leading scorer with seven goals, she was repeatedly denied by Swedish goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson. Sweden took a surprising lead with a 41stminute strike from forward Hanna Ljungberg, but the lead didn’t last long as German striker Maren Meinert equalized in the 46th minute. That was the last score throughout the first 90 minutes, sending the match into extra time. There, defender-midfielder Künzer (pictured), who had come on in the 88th minute, scored a golden goal, beating Jönsson with a powerful headed ball that just cleared the keeper’s outstretched hand.
