FROM THE BOARDROOM A very warm welcome back to Creasey Park for the 2019/20 season. Sadly, we ended last season in a poor run of form which ultimately led to our relegation. Not something we had anticipated back in February and to be honest a very tough pill to swallow. That said, it’s not good to dwell too long on negatives and we look forward with much optimism to the campaign in the Spartan South Midlands League. We start the season with three home games, two in the league and one in the FA Cup. We welcome our visitors Broadfields United today 3rd August, and Baldock Town on the 6th August . We then host Chipping Sodbury on 10th August in the FA Cup. Broadfields will be enjoying their first season at this level after their runners up spot in 2018/2019 and we welcome their players, officials and supporters to Creasey Park, and trust that they will enjoy their visit if not the result! Baldock Town are coming off the back of a very credible finish in this division last season, and their re-emergence over the last few years is testament to the hard work behind the scenes. We wish them well and look forward to a competitive fixture. In the close season we reappointed Gareth Jackson to the manager’s position and we welcome his assistant Ryan Sturges, who brings much recent playing experience and contacts at this level. They have been busy assembling a squad, which will showcase a number of new faces to

complement those who have returned. Pre- season has been encouraging, and there is a real team spirit emerging and a good number of really eye catching goals to get the juices flowing. Off the field it’s been as busy as always. We have an active and committed committee who freely give of their time, energy, and skill to make us the best that we can be. I am so grateful for their continued enthusiasm and positivity. We have some great deals on Season Tickets and Players Sponsorship, with prices even more competitive than in previous seasons. We’d love you to sign up to these. In addition, we have established our Junior Blues section, which amongst a whole host of benefits, has a number of great discount deals with local sponsors and businesses for the juniors and their families. This is also another step in establishing ourselves as a truly family club. More of that in the coming weeks. So, again, welcome and let’s really get behind Gareth, Ryan and the boys, as we seek to bounce back in style.

Enjoy the g ame Neil

GAFFER’S NOTES Good evening and welcome to Creasey Park for our second league game of the season against Baldock Town. I extend that welcome to Adam Fisher, his staff, players and supporters. I wish them all well and hope they have a safe journey home after the game. I’m writing this prior to both of our opening matches. However regardless of Baldock’s opening result, we are expecting a very tough challenge this evening from a team who finished 5th in the league last season and had some very good preseason results. Our pre-season was successful. We were one of the first teams to start our preseason schedule and I think we benefited from the early start with regards to our fitness and tactical work. We played seven matches in which I had the opportunity to experiment with different formations and players in different positions. Those of you who attended some of our matches also witnessed some very pleasing individual and team goals, that cannot fail to give confidence within the squad for the season ahead. I think the lads deserve that confidence from the hours of physical and tactical training that they all threw themselves into 7 weeks ago. I’m a great believer in training the way you play and playing the way you train, a philosophy that the whole squad has bought into.

I am sincerely hoping that we come into this game with points already on the board from Saturday’s match against Broadfields United and that tonight will see us add to that. I wish you all an enjoyable game!

BALDOCK TOWN HISTORY Baldock Town Football Club is a football club based in Baldock, Hertfordshire, England. Having originally been established in 1905, the current version of the club was established in 2003. They are currently members of Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and groundshare with Arlesey Town at their Hitchin Road ground. The club were founded in 1905 as Baldock Football Club, and joined the Northern Division of the Herts County League for the 1905–06 season. They won the division in 1920–21 and finished as runners-up in the championship play-off. In 1921 they were renamed Baldock Town, and league reorganisation saw them placed in the North Eastern Division. The league was reduced to a single division in 1923, and the 1924– 25 season saw the club finish as runnersup. However, the league was disbanded at the end of the season, and the club joined Division One of the Bedfordshire & District County League (later renamed the South Midlands League), with the reserves playing in Division Two. They won the league in 1927–28, and although they finished bottom of Division One in 1929–30, they avoided being relegated to Division Two. They remained in Division One until World War II. After the war Baldock rejoined the Herts County League, finishing bottom of Division One in 1946–47. They then switched back to the South Midlands League, winning

Division Two in 1947–48 and earning promotion to Division One; the reserves subsequently joined Division Two. The club won Division One in 1949–50 and were promoted to the Premier Division. After finishing as runners-up in 1953–54, they left the league, switching to the Parthenon League. They remained in the league for five seasons, before joining the Senior Division of the London League, finishing bottom of the division in 1959– 60. However, after four seasons they rejoined the Premier Division of the South Midlands League. They subsequently won the league in 1965–66, 1967–68 and 1969–70. In 1983 Baldock switched to the Premier Division of the United Counties League, finishing as runners-up in their first season. After finishing as runners-up again in 1986–87, they were promoted to the Southern Division of the Southern League. They remained in the division until the end of the 1994–95 season, which saw them finish as runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. However, they were relegated back to the Southern Division at the end of the 1996–97 season. In 1999 the club was transferred to the Eastern Division when the league was restructured. After the 2000–01 season they left the league and folded. In 2003 the club was reformed as

BALDOCK TOWN HISTORY Baldock, with the team composed of former members of the Baldock Town youth team. They joined Division One of the North Hertfordshire League. After finishing third in 2004–05, they were promoted to the Premier Division. The club were founder members of the North & Mid Herts League in 2006, and were placed in the Premier Division. During the year the club was renamed Baldock Town. After finishing as runners-up in the Premier Division, they were promoted to Division One of the Herts County League. They won the division at the first attempt, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 2008 they were renamed again, this time becoming Baldock Town Letchworth following a move to playing home matches in Letchworth. However, they reverted to being Baldock Town in 2011 after returning to Baldock. The club won the Premier Division in 2011–12 but were denied promotion due to their ground failing the necessary ground grading. After finishing as runners-up the following season, they were promoted to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League after agreeing a groundshare in nearby Hitchin. In May 2015, the club announced they would move to Stotfold to play at Stotfold Football Club’s Roker Park. After two years at Stotfold, they relocated to Arlesey Town’s Hitchin Road ground.

REPORTING IN

OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST BROADFIELDS UNITED A hotly anticipated new campaign for Dunstable Town started with a disappointing 0-3 defeat to Broadfields United, with goals from Rex Kimona, Jordon Goode-Keeley and Charlie Barton enough to seal the victory for the visitors.

the path of Kelvin Osei-Addo, who drove into the box and went down, but the referee saw nothing wrong, and that was it for the first half.

The game had started in an exciting and even manner, the Blues looking organised with new captain Seb Smith at the heart of their defence. When Broadfields attacked down the wing with 6 minutes on the clock, it was Smith who timed his tackle perfectly as the winger looked to make progress into the box.

Into the second half, Dunstable started very much on the front foot, forcing saves from the Broadfields keeper, with Trif and Stapleton again at the heart of things. But in the 53rd minute, it was Broadfields who were celebrating again, somewhat against the run of play, when Goode-Keeley shot from 20 yards, curling it past the fully stretched Mackenzie Taylor.

In the opening stages there was some neat play going forward for the Blues too, creating a number of chances, but none of a particularly clear-cut nature. Davide Pobbe showed great vision to volley goalwards when nobody thought it likely, but ultimately saw his shot go over the bar. With 31 minutes on the clock, Rex Kimona put newly promoted Broadfields ahead after a cross into the box resulted in some pinball action, ended by Kimona poking it in from close range. Dunstable responded well, looking to attack, and looked to have set Chris Stapleton through on goal only a minute after going behind, only for the lineman’s flag to be raised, much to the bewilderment of many in blue. Chances fell to both sides before half-time, most notably for Dunstable when Rio Da Silva linked well with Stapleton, whose shot was blocked, only to see Ben Collins’ follow-up put wide of the goal. Minutes later, Evans Lamboh brilliantly headed on a Daniel Trif long ball into

Dunstable remained cool and calm, and tried to play the game on their own terms, but with a quarter of an hour left to play, the game was put beyond them when a through-ball sent Charlie Barton bearing down on goal. At one stage it looked as though Ben Collins had shown enough pace to recover the situation, but Barton passed the ball neatly into the bottom corner to give his side a three-goal cushion.

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

6 AUGUST 2003 - THAT’S HOW YOU MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION On 6 August 2003, Manchester United lost to Sporting in a friendly that introduced them to the Portuguese side’s dynamic young winger, Cristiano Ronaldo. United were in Lisbon to help Sporting inaugurate their new home, the Estádio José Alvalade. The Red Devils had just completed a four-game tour of the United States and seemed to be suffering from tired legs as the hosts romped to a 3-1 victory with goals from Luís Felipe (26’) and João Pinto (62’, 81’). Even United’s consolation goal came courtesy of the Portuguese, as defender Hugo put the ball into his own net with two minutes remaining. The day wasn’t a total waste for United, though. Afterward, several players spoke to manager Alex Ferguson, raving about the performance of Sporting’s 18-year old midfielder, Ronaldo,

and urging their boss to sign him. Although Ronaldo had already attracted the interest of Arsenal and Liverpool, United swooped in and signed him that summer for a fee of £12.24M. Ronaldo remained at Old Trafford for six seasons, making a total of 292 appearances in which he scored 118 goals. Along the way, he helped the club to three consecutive Premier League titles from 2007 to 2009 and won the Champions League in 2008. In the summer of 2009, Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid for the world-record transfer fee of £80M, a profit of almost £68M for United.

LOCAL NON-LEAGUE CHAT with Ollie Bayliss

If you watched a game in the Spartan League last weekend, you may well have seen a significant new rule being used for the very first time. Sin bins have been introduced across all nonleague football below Step 4 in an attempt to reduce dissent. Anyone questioning an official’s decision will no longer be yellow carded, instead they’ll be temporarily dismissed for 10 minutes, leaving their side a man down and their opponents attempting to take full benefit of their temporary numerical advantage. In principle, it looks to be a bold and positive step from The FA to tackle a significant and stubborn problem in football. It’s not the first initiative to take-on the endemic issue of dissent in the game of course. ‘Fair Play’ tables and ‘Respect Campaigns’ have made little impact if we’re being honest, neither did the season where referees could move a free kick 10 yards up the field if a team argued the decision. The details of the new sin bin rule, however, could be its undoing. Whilst a ‘sin binning’ doesn’t count as a yellow card, a player who is sin binned twice can’t return to the field, but he can be substituted. That is, unless he has also already been booked, at which point he’s sent off with no replacement. The confusion doesn’t end there. When it comes to goalkeepers, the rule becomes even more complex. If a keeper is sin binned, an outfield player must go in goal. After he’s

served his 10 minute penalty, the goalkeeper must then return to the field as an outfield player (presumably in a change of shirt, shorts and socks) until the ball goes out of play. At which point, everyone changes kit again and he can resume his duties in goal. It’ll certainly require a period of adjustment for referees, players and fans to get used to the new rules and all their various permutations. They may have to however, as a roll out of this size suggests sin bins are here to stay. Whilst this season they’re only in play further down the pyramid, the FA have often selected leagues to trial the new changes to see if they should be introduced elsewhere. This season substituted players at all levels will leave the pitch at their nearest point, something that was first tested in the women’s game. In ‘94 ‘kick-ins’ replaced throw-ins in the Diadora League (cue big centre backs pilling forward every time their team won a throw-in anywhere on the pitch). Unsurprisingly on that occasion the law change was quietly dropped. If sin bins do reduce dissent in the lower leagues this season, we’ll almost certainly see them used higher up the ladder in the seasons to come.

Ollie Bayliss returns to BBC Three Counties every Tuesday evening from Tuesday 13th August with his Non-League Show from 6pm. It will also be available to listen again, via the BBC Sounds app.
