inside the boardroom A very warm welcome this evening to our visitors from Baldock Town who like ourselves are struggling to find form at the moment. Off the field there’s a lot of respect between the two Clubs and games between us over the past couple of seasons have been tight and settled by a one goal margin.

crowd watched an intriguing game, which was eventually settled on penalties. Admission on Thursday is £3 Adults, £2 Concessions and U16’s Free.

Our last game against Baldock was played at the Herts FA ground in Letchworth and was our last game in the Gladwish Cup. Joe Debayo came on as a late substitute and unleashed an unstoppable drive to bring the points back to Creasey Park. I’m sure most of us are hoping for more of the same tonight.

On Saturday we are at home to Harpenden Town in a local derby. Thanks to James Slack for agreeing to Jamaica Mi Crazy making a very welcome return to Creasey Park for more Caribbean culinary delights. We do want to make match days a more interesting and enjoyable experience. To do this we have to make sure that it is financially beneficial for Creasey Park to allow other hot food providers on site so please make sure you spend a little extra when you buy your cups of tea and Bestie Burgers.

Saturday’s defeat at Bedfont to British Airways FC was a bitter blow to everyone at the Club. We’d done our homework and had watched them play so nothing was left to chance. There are always lots of “If’s..buts..and maybe’s” but no one is making excuses, shirking responsibility or passing the buck. The result hurt, and it hurt a lot. Financially speaking Matt budgeted for this exact “worst case scenario” of being knocked out at the earliest stage of both the FA Cup & Vase, so I can at least reassure you that the Club remains financially solvent and our plans for the season off the pitch, are not affected by Saturday’s result. Good luck to British Airways FC in the next round of the Vase at home to Dessborough Town. On Thursday our U18’s take on AFC Rushden & Diamonds in the 1st Round Qualifying of the FA Youth Cup. Two weeks ago, they knocked out, National League North side Brackley Town in one of the big upsets of the night. A decent

hadley-print.indd 3

Finally, I want to pay tribute to our Fundraising Manager, Peter Bottom, who planned and arranged the Club’s Sponsored Walk from Creasey Park to the Cancer Unit at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital last Sunday as part of the Blues 4 – 5K L&D Hospital fundraising appeal. Joined by 25 fans, family and committee members, walking as far north as Fort William & as far south as Basingstoke the walk raised somewhere in the region of £3K. Peter’s attention to detail, his reliability, enthusiasm and quest to involve everyone at the Club is how this Club will succeed as CBS beds in and the Club’s social enterprise model grows. Thanks to all of you who donated money and gave their time freely and willingly to make Sunday such a success.

Baldock Town opposition spotlight

The club were founded in 1905 as Baldock Football Club and joined the Northern Division of the Herts County League for the 1905–06 season . They won the division in 1920–21 and finished as runners-up in the championship play-off. In 1921 they were renamed Baldock Town, and league reorganisation saw them placed in the North Eastern Division. The league was reduced to a single division in 1923, and the 1924–25 season saw the club finish as runnersup. However, the league was disbanded at the end of the season, and the club joined Division One of the Bedfordshire & District County League (later renamed the South Midlands League), with the reserves playing in Division Two. They won the league in 1927–28, and although they finished bottom of Division One in 1929–30, they avoided being relegated to Division Two. They remained in Division One until World War II. After the war Baldock re-joined the Herts County League, finishing bottom of Division One in 1946–47. They then switched back to the South Midlands League, winning Division

Two in 1947–48 and earning promotion to Division One; the reserves subsequently joined Division Two. The club won Division One in 1949–50 and were promoted to the Premier Division. After finishing as runners-up in 1953–54, they left the league, switching to the Parthenon League. They remained in the league for five seasons, before joining the Senior Division of the London League, finishing bottom of the division in 1959–60. However, after four seasons they re-joined the Premier Division of the South Midlands League. They subsequently won the league in 1965–66, 1967–68 and 1969–70. In 1983 Baldock switched to the Premier Division of the United Counties League, finishing as runners-up in their first season. After finishing as runners-up again in 1986–87, they were promoted to the Southern Division of the Southern League. They remained in the division until the end of the 1994–95 season,

However, they were relegated back to the Southern Division at the end of the 1996–97 season. In 1999 the club was transferred to the Eastern Division when the league was restructured. After the 2000–01 season they left the league and folded. In 2003 the club was reformed as Baldock, with the team composed of former members of the Baldock Town youth team. Since then, the Club have progressed from the North Herts League to the Herts Senior County League. The 1st Team won Division One of the HSCL in their debut season in 2007/2008.

For three seasons from 2008/09, the team played its home matches on Saturday afternoons at The County Ground, Baldock Road in Letchworth, but they returned to Baldock for the 2011/12 season playing at Baldock Town FC’s former home at Norton Road, which is now known as the North Herts Arena.

After three near misses, the 1st Team finally won the Herts Senior County League Premier Division title in 2011/12. Unfortunately, due to

ground grading issues, the team were unable to take their place in the Spartan South Midlands League. For the 2012/13 season, the team began a groundshare with Hitchin Town FC. Despite finishing runners-up in the HSCL Premier Division the following season, it would still prove enough to secure that elusive promotion. Scott Grant’s side also won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time and retained the Anagram Records Trophy. The next two seasons saw a period of consolidation for the 1st Team finishing 7th and 10th respectively in Spartan South Midlands League Division One (Step 6 on the NonLeague Pyramid). After Grant decided to step down Luke Gregson took the reins for the 2015/16 season, assisted by Dean Gilbert. After an indifferent start, the team went on a superb run and ended up just missing out on promotion. The 3rd place finish was the club’s highest in the Football Pyramid.

At the end of the 2018-19 season Luke Gregson stood down and former Welwyn Garden City manager Adam Fisher took over. Fisher’s side started slowly and only began to pick up some form at the end of November shortly after Rob Bates came on board as Assistant Manager bringing some key signings with him – Baldock went on an impressive unbeaten run climbing the table before the pandemic brought the season to a premature end. In the summer of 2020 Adam Fisher resigned as manager and the club promoted Assistant Manager Rob Bates to the Manager’s position. Rob has brought in his own management team and has also retained 90% of last season’s squad ahead of the 2020-21 season. The team currently groundshare at Arlesey Town FC’s ground; there are plans in place to build a new stadium in Baldock near Clothall Common

IMPROVING THE LIVES BECOMING A COMMUNITY BENEFIT SOCIETY

Dunstable Town FC have an interesting history. I think that’s the polite way of putting it. Formed in 1883 the Club had several homes before finding permanent residency at Creasey Park Those of a certain vintage may have witnessed the mercurial magic of George Best when he graced the hallowed turf of Creasey Park in 1974, playing three times for the Blues as a favour to his old Manchester United teammate, Barry Fry, who was the Club’s Manager. Fry, in his first job in football management went on to manage Barnet, Birmingham City & Peterborough Utd, where he is Director of Football. But Best hasn’t been the only former International to wear the Club’s colours, former England player Jeff Astle scored 34 times for the Blues in the 1974 -75 season. Kerry Dixon is another former England International who started his career at Dunstable Town, before going on to play for Reading & then heading to the bright lights of London’s Kings Road, where he scored 193 times for Chelsea making him the Club’s alltime third most prolific goal scorer. More recently, Luton Town player Peter Kioso played for the Club as an 18-year-old in the 2017 -18 season, and at the end of last season another 18 year old, Eric Ameyaw left the Club to sign for Fulham. But, to misquote Freddie Mercury, it hasn’t always been a “bed of roses and a pleasure cruise”. Tales of money in envelopes, dodgy dealings and financial mismanagement have also seen the Club lurch from peak to trough and back again on too occasions causing the Club to go out of business for four years in the mid to late 1990’s and a partial shut-down in the 1970’s. Us football fans, are, by and large, masochists. We derive a perverse sense of pleasure from following our teams’ (mis)fortunes, getting

20 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Baldock Town hadley-print.indd 20

battered by the elements on terraces without covers, travelling long distances on bitterly cold Tuesday nights to see our teams succumb to a blatant dive in the last minute of stoppage time. And because we’re masochists and creatures of habit we do it every season. But we at least have the certainty that our Club will be still in existence for us to experience this self-inflicted pain and punishment we secretly enjoy. But try asking the fans of Macclesfield, Bury, and North Ferriby who have all seen their Clubs fold recently due to the financial pressures of boom-and-bust football economics, about the certainty of where they’ll be at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. The pressure to achieve success at all costs comes at too high a price for many Clubs. As our own experience in the 1970’s and 1990’s showed, we’ve also ridden the football financial rollercoaster and fallen from grace in so doing. The global Covid pandemic wrought havoc and despair to the lives of millions. While the nation mourned the lives of countless thousands, many of the Club’s commercial sponsors saw their own businesses and livelihoods severely affected by lockdowns and the cessation of normal trading. Faced with a loss of nearly half its income the Club had to fold its Cup winning Development Team, circle the wagons and concentrate on keeping just one senior team playing last season. Dunstable Town became managed by the Club’s fans in 2017. Fan ownership is a relatively recent concept of running a football Club. Many clubs, even at non-league level,

rely heavily on the generosity of individual donors to keep their clubs afloat, or own their own facilities and can supplement match day income by hiring out their facilities to community groups, or running popular social events from their clubhouses. As tenants of the Council and with no individual benefactors that is simply not an option for Dunstable Town. Therefore, to protect the Club’s history and ensure a sustainable future we began talks with the Football Supporters’ Association earlier this year and will now start the new season in August as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, the Club will operate as a social enterprise combining both traditional football activities with working in our local communities on improving the mental and physical health and well-being of individuals. Regulars on match-days at Creasey Park may not notice much of a difference. It’s on nonmatch days though that being a CBS club starts to make a difference. The Club has been fortunate over the past few seasons to have developed a strong relationship with Mind BLMK (Beds, Luton, and Milton Keynes) and for the past three seasons have had the Mind BLMK logo on the front of the playing kit. There is ample anecdotal evidence to suggest that this move encouraged and empowered many people to seek help for emotional and psychological problems they were facing from both statutory and non-statutory mental health services. With Mind BLMK as a strategic partner the Club has worked on initiatives to actively promote better mental health through football and exercise. All very noble and worthwhile you may say, but how does this benefit the Club’s supporters? The answer is very simple. Supporters, and members of the public, have the opportunity

hadley-print.indd 21

to become owners of Dunstable Town FC. By simply purchasing a maximum of one share per person a supporter automatically becomes an owner of Dunstable Town FC. It’s a scheme that has been championed by League clubs like AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Exeter City, and non-league clubs such as AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Lewes FC and FC United of Manchester. It is the ultimate manifestation of fan power and the pinnacle of supporter commitment to become an owner of the Club you support. It means that you don’t have to be the owner of an oil well or a gas field to own your own football club, you can be like 1,600 people who own Lewes FC or 800 who own AFC Rushden & Diamonds, receive your owner’s share certificate and be part of the Club that is a benefit to the community. Owners enjoy benefits from the Club’s Blue Card, shop and save discount scheme, receive preferential rates from Club partners in the health and leisure sector, the Club’s own Nike kit supplier and a growing number of shops and traders in the town, keen to do their bit and show support for the Club With A Purpose. And if that wasn’t enough, owners automatically get voting rights on electing the Club’s Board of Directors every year, choosing new kit, and consulted on future plans for the Club. For less than the price of a couple of cinema tickets and a bag of popcorn you can become an owner of Dunstable Town FC and support the great work we’re doing with our partners improving the lives of others. Children’s ownership is half price but has no voting rights until aged 16. For details on how to own your local club, please visit our website. www.dunstabletownfc.co.uk/ownership

on this day

14 September 1939..

Football In Wartime On 14 September 1939, the British government suspended regular football competitions for the duration of World War II. In their place, many teams participated in unofficial regional competitions to provide a diversion for the population and boost morale. By the time Britain declared war on Germany, the 1939-40 seasons had already started in England and Scotland, but the results were voided and both league and cup competitions were suspended so that resources, including men, could be diverted toward the war effort. The government, however, soon allowed football to continue in a modified form - English teams were limited to a 50-mile travel range and split into 10 regional leagues for the 193940 season, with each league comprising 8 to 10 teams. Scotland split into two leagues - a

Western Division and an Eastern Division. The leagues shifted constantly, however, over the course of the war. Due to the unavailability of many professional footballers who had joined the military, the quality of the wartime matches fell dramatically from the standards set prior to the war. Several matches were forfeited because clubs were unable to field full sides on match days. The FA Cup returned in 1945, while the Scottish Cup and regular league play resumed in 1946. The wartime results were unofficial, and clubs restarted their respective leagues in the positions they had earned in the 1938-39 season.
