2 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs BALDOCk TOWN T he ma N ager

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all attached to Baldock Town ahead of tonight’s game. Baldock Town come into the game I am sure full of confidence after hammering Hoddesdon 8-2 on Saturday and I have no doubts will provide another stern test for us this evening. Before I start on how I feel about Saturdays result I must first congratulate Shefford Town & Campton on their victory and progressing into the next round of the. They did their jobs and executed their game plan well and deserve to be in the next round rather than us. We played into their hands, they took their opportunities and managed the game well and deserve credit for their win.

Having had time to reflect on our FA Cup exit I’m even more incandescent with rage than I was at 5pm and that says something! I am absolutely furious with our performance levels or unfortunately lack of performance on Saturday and can have no complaints about our FA Cup exit at the hands of Shefford Town & Campton. It is not often I see one of my sides serve up such a lack of urgency and the thing that hurts deep down is the fact I felt Shefford Town & Campton wanted to win more than we did and that is something I will not accept. We had chances to score and hit the bar twice as well as forcing an excellent save from their Goalkeeper in the 1st half. Unfortunately, when you give 2 goals away human nature is to force and rush things and some of our decision making in the final 3rd was simply woeful. We always prepare thoroughly for games and that was no different for last Saturdays game. Our complete lack of ability to carry out our game plan is infuriating. At no point did we work on moving the ball at snail pace or revert to smashing aimless balls forward straight to their goalkeeper! Our decision making, our lack of urgency and naivety for a group that has done so well so far this season hurts. The first goal was a “Baldock Town come into the game i am sure full of confidence after hammering hoddesdon 8-2 on saturday”

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3 chain of events starting from our own throw in. We let the lad cut inside to have a free hit at Charlie Jones who made an excellent save. You cannot back off and back off and allow teams to get shots away. The resulting corner we then deal with the 1st contact well and then it’s a 2nd phase delivery and free header from the middle of our goal and we get Anyonepunished.whoknows me will know defending 2nd phase deliveries is one of my non negotiables. We spoke at half time about the need to ensure we didn’t back off and allow shots at our goal. We also reiterated the need to be patient in possession and await openings and not force passes. We clearly didn’t heed that warning and a mix up between 2 of our players going for the same ball and we then back off and back off and fair credit to their lad who had only just come on he hits it into the bottom corner. It’s the first time I’ve ever got that personal with a group of players in 18 years of coaching and management. It isn’t an “us and them” mentality it’s an “us”. As the Head Coach I always take complete responsibility for results and performances and Saturday is no different. We have achieved nothing yet and we need to get back to earth. The players are an honest group and out of any wreckage I always try to see positives. The FA cup run whilst exciting and financially rewarding was never realistically a competition we could win. We are currently 4 league games behind some teams in our division which isn’t ideal. We must compartmentalise the defeat, park it and move on quickly. I’ve never been someone who feels sorry for myself and will never let my players do that. We need to toughen up and get back to winning ways. The players are in no doubt how I feel and it’s imperative we move on.

Joe Deeney

I feel desperately sorry for our supporters, directors, and everyone off the field that deserved more than the absolute nonsense we served up on Saturday. We now need to show we are resilient and ensure we bounce back. I am an emotional passionate person and without a doubt am guilty of taking losses too hard. Any manager will know what losing feels like especially in the way we lost. Only a manager knows that feeling, no-one else understands that feeling that us managers / head coaches go through. Sleep is elusive, you over analyse every decision made and your brain never stops. One thing I will assure everyone at the club is we will come back out fighting. I have been in hundreds of fights in my life, both in and out of the ring and I will ensure we fight our way back from this disappointment. We have a choice now! We either fight or we sulk. We can never guarantee wins but what I will guarantee is that we will be miles better tonight and next week!

I look forward to another tough week with 2 games and the opportunity for us to bounce back quickly. We face Shefford Town & Campton again on Saturday in the league and it will be a perfect chance for us to correct last week’s game. Before we get there, we have got to focus on winning tonight against a tough Baldock Town team. Let’s hope this time next week we are in a much better place. It won’t be easy, but we will do all we can. Enjoy tonight’s game.

Tonight’s visitors celebrated a whopping big win over Hoddesdon Town on Saturday and we welcome all their coaching and playing staff, committee and supporters and hope they have an enjoyable evening with us, and a safe journey home come the final whistle.

Saturday was a disappointing blow particularly as both Tolu & Joe SellersWest both hit the crossbar and we had chances, particularly in the first half but just couldn’t convert any. But credit to Shefford Town & Campton who go through to the next round on merit and were worthy winners on the Theday. good news is that Matt didn’t include any prize money when he was preparing this season’s budget, so it was never a question of win or bust. In all our three Emirates FA Cup matches will have earned the Club somewhere in the region of £3,500. One of the first items on the shopping list will be a defibrillator. There is no SSMFL rule to make clubs have a defibrillator on site. Even if there is a defibrillator on site, some grounds, like Holmer Green, have a pitch which is a bit of a walk away from the clubhouse, “i’m very happy to inform you that the club has been voted the Grassroots club of the year by Beds fa & mcdonalds for a second consecutive year.”

Good evening, everyone and welcome to this evening’s Gladwish Challenge Trophy First Round tie against Baldock ForTown.those of you who don’t know, Victor Gladwish is a successful businessman who has been a friend of the non-league game for many years. An article in When Saturday Comes in 2004 listed his many and varied sponsorship deals with nonleague clubs up and down the land. He sponsored the “behind closed doors” SSMFL cup competition during Spring of 2021 when Covid restrictions prevented spectators attending matches.

On Friday night I had the genuine pleasure of attending our Youth Section Quiz Night held ay the United Services Club. Congratulations to Directors, Christian Baxter & Kristy Lewington who planned pretty much the perfect evening and ensured everyone had a great time. The event raised over £1,500 and will help keep our young players’ registration payments the best value for money locally.

On Thursday Ayab Nabongo’s U18’s travel to Kings Langley in their first League match in the Southern Counties Floodlight Youth League. Ayab and his team have built a very strong team and look very unlikely to suffer the same fate as befell our plucky team from last year who scrapped valiantly but lost heavily both home and away against Kings Langley, who would finish as League Finally, champions.our run of home matches continues on Saturday when Shefford Town & Campton make a return visit to Creasey Park. This time it’s a SSMFL fixture and an early opportunity for Joe & Kyle to get revenge for Saturday’s Thisdefeat.column will be written by a fellow Director next Saturday so that’s all from me for now. Let’s get behind Joe & the boys and be the loud and proud 12th Man.

Andrew Madaras

You’llis. need to forgive the cliché, but it really is a matter of success being driven by unity and togetherness both on and off the pitch, and that’s what Joe & Kyle are building on the playing side, and the Board of Directors are building off it.

Baldock is a historic market town in the district of North Hertfordshire, where the River Ivel rises. It lies 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Bedford, and 14 miles (23 km) north northwest of the county town of Hertford. Nearby towns include Royston to the northeast, Letchworth, and Hitchin to the southwest and Stevenage to the south. Baldock’s position at the crossing of two important thoroughfares, the Great North Road and the Icknield Way has made it a stopping point for a number of illustrious visitors, including Charles I, who passed through Baldock en route for London after his arrest in 1648 and supposedly Dick Turpin. Baldock has an exceptionally rich archaeological heritage. Palaeolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age settlements show the site of Baldock has been continuously occupied since prehistoric times. The Baldock area is also host to the highest quantity of finds of ancient coins in Hertfordshire after the Verulamium region. Baldock was founded by the Knights Templar as a market town in the 1140s. It was laid out by the Knights Templar on land in the manor of Weston in the hundred of Broadwater, granted by the earl of Pembroke, Gilbert de Clare, before his death in 1148. The 1850 tithe map, drawn up before the parish boundaries were extended in the later 19th century, clearly shows the boundaries of the land grant made from the manor of Weston in the 12th century; it is a triangular parcel of land beside the old Roman Road, cut out from an older estate. The popular story for the origin of the name Baldock is that it is a derivation from the Old French name for Baghdad: Baldac or later Baudac. While Damascus was the furthest extent of Templar military activity during the Crusades, they would have been aware of its significance and it was widely regarded as the most prosperous market in the world. Perhaps the Templars hoped that the name would confer a similar prosperity on their own market town in England. Founding contemporaneous documents use the spelling Baudac, but it is first recorded as “Baldac” in the Pipe Rolls of Hertfordshire in 1168. The club were founded in 1905 as Baldock Football Club and joined the Northern Division of the Herts County League for the 1905–06 season. They won the division in 1920–21 and finished as runners-up in the championship playoff. In 1921 they were renamed Baldock Town, and league reorganisation saw them placed in the North Eastern Division. The league was reduced to a single division in 1923, and the 1924–25 season saw the club finish as runnersup. However, the league was disbanded at the end of the season, and the club joined Division One of the Bedfordshire & District County League (later renamed the South Midlands League), with the reserves playing in Division Two. They won the league in 1927–28, and although they finished bottom of Division One in 1929–30, they avoided being relegated to Division Two. They remained in Division One until World War AfterII.the war Baldock re-joined the Herts County League, finishing bottom of Division One in 1946–47. They then

DUNSTABLE TOWN vs BALDOCk TOWN switched back to the South Midlands League, winning Division Two in 1947–48 and earning promotion to Division One; the reserves subsequently joined Division Two. The club won Division One in 1949–50 and were promoted to the Premier Division. After finishing as runners-up in 1953–54, they left the league, switching to the Parthenon League. They remained in the league for five seasons, before joining the Senior Division of the London League, finishing bottom of the division in 1959–60. However, after four seasons they rejoined the Premier Division of the South Midlands League. They subsequently won the league in 1965–66, 1967–68 and 1969–70. In 1983 Baldock switched to the Premier Division of the United Counties League, finishing as runners-up in their first season. After finishing as runners-up again in 1986–87, they were promoted to the Southern Division of the Southern League. They remained in the division until the end of the 1994–95 season, which saw them finish as runnersup, earning promotion to the Premier Division. However, they were relegated back to the Southern Division at the end of the 1996–97 season. In 1999 the club was transferred to the Eastern Division when the league was restructured. After the 2000–01 season they left the league and folded. In 2003 the club was reformed as Baldock, with the team composed of former members of the Baldock Town youth team. Since then, the Club have progressed from the North Herts League to the Herts Senior County League. The 1st Team won Division One of the HSCL in their debut season in 2007/2008. For three seasons from 2008/09, the team played its home matches on Saturday afternoons at The County Ground, Baldock Road in Letchworth, but they returned to Baldock for the 2011/12 season playing at Baldock Town FC’s former home at Norton Road, which is now known as the North Herts

AfterArena.three near misses, the 1st Team finally won the Herts Senior County League Premier Division title in 2011/12. Unfortunately, due to ground grading issues, the team were unable to take their place in the Spartan South Midlands League. For the 2012/13 season, the team began a groundshare with Hitchin Town FC. Despite finishing runners-up in the HSCL Premier Division the following season, it would still prove enough to secure that elusive promotion.

Grant’s side also won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time and retained the Anagram Records Trophy. The next two seasons saw a period of consolidation for the 1st Team finishing 7th and 10th respectively in Spartan South Midlands League Division One (Step 6 on the Non-League Pyramid). After Grant decided to step down Luke Gregson took the reins for the 2015/16 season, assisted by Dean Gilbert. After an indifferent start, the team went on a superb run and ended up just missing out on promotion. The 3rd place finish was the club’s highest in the Football Pyramid to date. At the end of the 2018-19 season Luke Gregson stood down and former Welwyn Garden City manager Adam Fisher took over. Fisher’s side started slowly and only began to pick up some form at the end of November shortly after Rob Bates came on board as Assistant Manager bringing some key signings with him – Baldock went on an impressive unbeaten run climbing the table before the pandemic brought the season to a premature end. In the summer of 2020 Adam Fisher resigned as manager and the club promoted Assistant Manager Rob Bates to the Manager’s position. Rob has brought in his own management team and has also retained 90% of last season’s squad ahead of the 2020-21 Theseason.team currently groundshare at Arlesey Town FC’s ground; there are plans in place to build a new stadium in Baldock near Clothall Common.

On 10 minutes only last ditch defending from the away side prevented the Blues from taking the lead.

Shefford’s tactics were well executed and when Scott Metcalfe, on as a second half substitute, struck a low venomous drive on 64 minutes to put his side two goals up, it proved too tall a mountain for the home side to climb.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 33 ssmfl premier divisio N maTch repor T

The crowd of just under 300 was a season best and took the average for the season to 216. They witnessed an absorbing contest where Shefford’s clinical accuracy eventually told. Dunstable had their chances but couldn’t find the finishing touch to good preparatory play. A rising shot from Tolu Ikuyinminu crashed against the bar just before half time and then a header from JoeSellers-West which hit the crossbar in the second half were the Town’s two closest chances. Had they gone in then a replay on Tuesday night would have been the reward. But truth be told, the Blues didn’t really deserve a second bite of the cherry. Dunstable know they can perform better, particularly in the second half when anxiety crept in at the expense of the game plan. Shefford were good value for their win and Dunstable Head Coach, Joe Deeney, knew his men hadn’t been at their Dunstable’sbest.

ThisSeptember.willbe only the Blues third League match of the season and Head Coach, Joe Deeney will want to see a spirited performance from his side and get the season back on track.

On 21 minutes Kyle Forster in the Shefford goal pulled off a tremendous save to deny Kyle Faulkner. Despite the early pressure and possession Dunstable couldn’t find a way through and fell behind on 35 minutes to a deft header from former Hitchin Town man, Henry Snee, stooping low to turn a cross home. A minute before that Charlie Jones in the Dunstable goal had needed to be at his best to keep the scores level.

The Blues could bounce back with another home match on Tuesday night against Baldock Town in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy before facing Shefford again at Creasey Park on Saturday 10th

Tolu Ikuyinminu looked dangerous early on. His cross in the 6th minute couldn’t find a blue shirt.

Shefford Town & Campton booked their place in the 2nd Round Qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup with a 2 -0 away win over the Blues at a sun-drenched Creasey Park on Saturday afternoon. Newly promoted Shefford Town & Campton have started the season at a canter. Before the start of play they sat top of the Premier League with a 100% record of four wins from four games. Their impressive form continued on Saturday afternoon, as a goal in each half was enough to send the large home support away in reflective thought of what might have been had Town made the most of early chances.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 39

This is Rugby League territory, with the city’s side, Wakefield Trinity having won the twice (the golden years of 1967-68) and five challenge cups. Their stadium, The 9,000 capacity Belle Vue has been their home since 1892 and for a period did host a football side.

The move was part of a massive investment in the city to try to bring professional football to the region. For those with good memories, you may recall that the club reached the third round of the FA Cup back in 1998 when they were still in the Unibond League. They drew West Ham United and travelled down to London, knowing that they were facing a Harry Redknapp side who were, quite frankly, a bit of a joke.

A favourite question in trivia quizzes, the answer often beats even the best of us. But by some way, the answer is Wakefield and there’s little chance of them getting a professional side any time soon. Of course, we all know the answer is Wakefield, right?

The cathedral city, with Leeds to the North, Barnsley to the South and Huddersfield on the western horizon has a population of nearly 330,000 based on the most recent census results but has never hosted a professional football side.

Whilst Frickley Athletic, today playing at Step 4 in the Northern Premier League (East) can claim to be within the metropolitan area, the city’s original side Wakefield & Emley FC existed from 2004 to 2014, having moved from the village of Emley where a team had played for over 100 years. Emley, for those who love a bit of trivia, is home to the Emley Moor Tower, the 4th tallest structure in the United Kingdom at 330m high.

Unsurprisingly to the Hammers fans, the Non-League side more than held their own, equalising Frank Lampard’s 4th minute opener just after half-time, only losing to a late John Hartson effort. The following season the club reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy, still as a Step 3 side. Two seasons later they missed out on promotion to Step 1 despite reaching a mammoth 101 points, losing out to Stalybridge Celtic by a single point. At the end of the 2005/06 season, Wakefield & Emley FC became just Wakefield FC and they found a ground in the city centre at College Grove, which was also the home of the Rugby Union side. But the club could never reclaim the glory years under the Emley name and at the end of the 2013-14 season, having finished bottom of the Northern Premier League Division One North, the club Emleyfolded.reformed as AFC Emley the following season, moving back to their ground in the village and are today in the Northern Counties East Premier League (Step 5), having gained promotion during the summer as part of the FA’s reshuffle. However, they are a long way away from their glory years of twenty years Despiteago.some tentative discussions in the last few years, Wakefield remains football-less and so it is safe to continue to answer those trivia questions about the biggest UK city without a professional team for some time yet.

44 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs BALDOCk T Hayes is a town in West London, historically situated within the county of Middlesex and now part of the London Borough of Hillingdon. Hayes was developed in the late 19th and 20th centuries as an industrial locality to which residential districts were later added to house factory workers. Yeading is a settlement in West London, forming part of the London Borough of Hillingdon, having been developed after the Second World War. Yeading Dock was one of many docks built along the Grand Union Canal. The main industry in the area was brick making and the canal provided a reliable mode of transportation. After the Second World War, a large prefab estate was erected in HayesYeading.FCwas formed in 1909 originally as Botwell Mission. This was the small mission church where the players changed and stored their kit. In 1931 Hayes lost the FA Amateur Cup Final to Wycombe Wanderers at Arsenal Stadium in front of a 31,000 crowd. After winning the Isthmian League in 1996, the club was promoted to Conference National. During a six-year spell, the highest finish was third place in 1999. Yeading FC was formed in 1960, remaining in junior and intermediate football until the 1980s before being granted senior status, joining the London Spartan League in 1984. Subsequently the club was promoted to the Isthmian League The uhThiskthroughouthundredsofattendedhis(@_Thepiemanrealpieman)aTottenhamotspurfanwhohasthousandsmatchesandofgroundstheunitedingdomandeurope.weekhevisitsayes&yeadingnitedfc

Hayes FC and Yeading FC merged in 2007 to become Hayes & Yeading United FC. Prior to the merger I had visited the grounds of Hayes (Church Road) and Yeading (Beaconsfield Road, latterly known as The Warren) in 1990 and 1985 respectively. Therefore, this long overdue visit to the SkyEx Community Stadium provided an element of symmetry and completion. My journey from Cheshunt, via Seven Sisters, Highbury & Islington, Gunnersbury, and Ealing Broadway, enabled me to reach Hayes & Harlington. From the railway station, it takes around 25 minutes to walk to the ground. Conveniently, the plotted route took me past The Botwell Inn (JD Wetherspoon). At this establishment. I enjoyed two contrasting brews from Sambrooks. Powerhouse Porter (4.9%) and Wandle (3.8%), both in excellent condition and I would suggest that the latter tastes a tad better than the river it is named after. Our friend Matt Smithurst has helped to clear rubbish from said river as a volunteer, so I may be wrong. The remainder of the route to the ground was mainly along country paths which was a pleasant change to the urban sprawl of this part of West London. The highlight of the ground is the impressive covered main stand, which offers an excellent view of the entire playing area.

On a warm sunny afternoon, the shade was most welcome. There is a small, sheltered area in front of the stand for the use of less abled folk. The only other spectator accommodation is a covered terrace behind one of the goals. However, this section was out of bounds for this match. The remainder of the ground is open to the elements. This venue is still a work in progress and further development is Theplanned.neutrals present enjoyed this match, the home support, and officials less so I suspect. There was frustration following a red card in the first period. There was even greater frustration following Beaconsfield Town’s second half leveller. My journey home involved an interchange at Shepherd’s Bush and was relatively straightforward. Attendance: 184 Admission: £10:00/£6:00 Programme: £2:50 (32 pages) Team Sheet: Free

recommended puB The Crooked Billet is right next to the ground and serves great food and good real ales but does get busy on a weekend. If travelling by public transport, a pit stop at The Horn close to St Albans station would be recommended or a short walk to the Robin Hood. Another option is the Three Horseshoes on Hatfield Road where the bus drops you off, which serves London Pride and Doom Bar.
