FROM the boardroom Welcome back to Creasey Park this afternoon as we entertain our near neighbours Barton Rovers. We welcome them and hope they enjoy the game. After a two week break its good to get back to league action . Our last home game against Aylesbury United was a close run affair, with the Blues just failing to get a deserved point. It was a really busy day, as we commemorated 100 years since the end of the 1st World War. Special thanks to the White’s for the many hours they spent ensuring that we paid an appropriate tribute to those who have put our liberty above their own interests. On the same day there was much filming going on before and after the game. Look out for the outcome of that filming in the next few weeks! Also, we welcomed Hayley Coomber from MIND BLMK to the game. She tells us that she had a fantastic day with us and we look forward to seeing her again. Similarly to the Aylesbury United game ,no one would have argued if we’d walked away with a share of the spoils at Didcot a week later. A fine strike from Chris Wreh gave grounds for optimism, but it was not to be. Fine margins and injuries have not been kind to us. Off the field we continue to engage with local businesses. We have a number of

new sponsors boards in place and this will increase in the next few weeks. Many peoples hard work is beginning to pay off. We are now forging a relationship with Dunstable Community Radio and also Hospital radio. Both Tony and myself have proved that we have good faces for radio. I certainly don’t like the sound of my own voice, but it’s great to have the opportunity to talk about the club, our ethos, and aspirations. It’s now several weeks since we set up our stall at the Dunstable Quadrant . We’ve had some great conversations with shoppers as we seek to raise awareness and promote the club. Please come by and say hello. Our congratulations go to a key member of the grounds team here at Creasey. At the Beds FA Grassroots Football Awards ,Dave Smith who heads up the team, was honoured in the Grounds Team of the Year category . At the same event young Tyler Dunnell won the Young Volunteer category. Well done gentlemen! As always let’s get behind Tony , Gareth, and the team this afternoon. It makes all the difference.

Enjoy the m atch Neil

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and finally we’re back to Creasey Park for a football match. Big welcome to our friends and neighbours Barton Rovers. Especially to Darren and Yella both of whom I have huge respect for. Of course both teams will be desperate for 3 points and I hope that translates into an exciting game and as always, we will be fighting to get back to winning ways, despite some really good performances. I actually thought Didcot were a decent outfit, however, taking the centre back out of that line up would perhaps makes a big difference to them. Well we have had our keeper, two centre backs, two centre midfielders and a striker out injured so, it shows how far we’ve come when we can still compete in games. James was sent to us as a favour from Peterborough Sports and now James will be heading back. I’m sure you join me in wishing him the best and special thanks to the sporting integrity and decency of Jimmy and Peterborough Sports. We’ve had a good week despite the layoff. An excellent session Saturday morning and Monday was followed by a learning opportunity in visiting Luton Town who play a similar shape to us. My word, if we can replicate a fraction of what we saw against Bradford I would be delighted. The thing is, our players are excellent and more the capable of doing that.

Thanks to Gary Sweet, Mike and Chris Clark in assisting getting the squad in for the game. Right, time for football, let’s go!

baRtON ROveRS hiStORY Barton Rovers History Barton Rovers have their home in Barton-le-Clay, a village of some 5000 people just north of Luton. Formed in 1898 the club played in inter village football for the first 50 years until 1946 when they reformed and joined the Luton & District League. Progress was such that in 1954 they were accepted into the South Midlands League. They enjoyed only limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined the club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964 65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep in their final season the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy the only time this has been achieved to date. In 1976 the club entered the FA Vase for the first time and went to the quarterfinals before losing to Farnborough Town. The following year it was one step better with a Semi final appearance against Sheffield. 1978 saw the pinnacle reached with a crowd of 16,391 watching the Final at Wembley where Barton Rovers lost 1 2 to Blue Star of Newcastle. In 1979 The Rovers gained election to the then isthmian league. In their first season they finished a credible 8th. In 1980 81 this was improved to fourth and the same position was repeated in 1981 82, when the club also enjoyed another good Vase run reaching the Rainworth MW 1 2 on aggregate. At the end of the 1982 83 season Barry Reed retired having achieved the clubs highest position of 3rd. He had also fulfilled his greatest wish to see Barton Rovers play in the First

Round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980 when the Rovers lost 0 2 to Torquay United at Plainmoor. The club had to settle for mid table obscurity as three managers guided the Rovers through a transitional period in the mid 80’s. In season 1990 91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two, for Manager Mick Huckle that was his final game in charge after five years, as he retired to step up to General Manager. After an unspectacular 1991/192 season with firstly Ray Brandon and then Tony Dumigan in charge a new man was appointed in May 1992 he was Brian Williams who had been one of the most successful non league managers in the area. Unfortunately his success was limited to cup competitions with the Rovers having their best FA Vase run for seven years, eventually failing to, Wembley finalists Tiverton Town from the Great Mills Western League in The 4th Round. The semi final of the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also reached but the most notable success came in the Isthmian Associate Members Trophy where the Rovers reached the final of an Isthmian league competition for the first time in their history. Despite a 3 1 extra time defeat against Northwood it was an achievement that lit up the reins, retaining Gordon Brown as his coach. May 1993 saw the appointment of Gordon Taylor. His first season at Sharpenhoe Road saw him guide the Rovers to 4th spot, the club’s highest position since 1983, behind runaway leaders and big spenders Newbury Town, Chertsey Town and Aldershot Town. This platform was built upon in season 1994-

baRtON ROveRS hiStORY 95, and Gordon Taylor successfully steered the Rovers into Runners up position behind Champions Thame United. But to leave it there would hide the real success story of the season. It was realised at Christmas that the Clubs financial position was precarious to say the least, and drastic action was needed, initially to cut costs. With the team riding high in the table, and the very realistic chance of promotion, if not the Championship, lying ahead the decision to cut the playing budget to nil was not an easy one, but a necessary evil to ensure the Club’s survival. This body blow has destroyed many a club before but the loyalty shown by the manager Gordon Taylor, and the bulk of the playing squad, cannot be disputed. Their response had to be seen to be believed. Playing the best football of the season they subsequently swept to nine straight victories, eight in the league that put Barton back on top of the table, scoring 30 goals and conceding just 4. Only one victory in March allowed the chasing pack to make up ground, but a return to form in April culminated in promotion being gained in the penultimate match. No praise can be too high for the achievement of the management and players, who after all the adversity, took Barton Rovers into the First Division of the Isthmian League for the first time ever, after 16 seasons of membership of the League. The elevation also saw the Rovers join the top 176-non league clubs in the country in the FA Trophy. With subsequent cuts being made to the clubs running costs, and increase in revenue from sponsorship, the club was once again heading in the right direction. Barton’s first season in Division One was not an easy one as the club struggled on to finds it’s feet in the higher

division, but lessons were learnt from the early setbacks, and by December the tide was turned and the Rovers hoisted themselves clear of the danger zone. Barton also reached the finals of both county cups, where they met Bedford Town twice. Bedford took the honours in the Senior Cup, winning 1-0. Barton then won the Premier Cup 1-0 on aggregate. Tony McNally scoring the only goal 11 minutes from the end of the second leg at Sharpenhoe Road. Season 1996 97 saw Barton top the Division One table twice in September. However a run of seven matches without a win saw Manager Gordon Taylor tender his resignation in October 1996 after three and a quarter years in charge, despite the club still being in a healthy position in the top half of the table. Former Manager Mick Huckle took over the reins with former Coach Ben Harrison on a temporary basis while interviews took place. As a result of these the Club selected Gordon Brown as their new Manager. The transitional period that followed saw a run of 13 games without a win until a vital 2.1 success at fellow strugglers Canvey Island in February 1997. With the “duck “broken and a settled side now back in place, results improved and the Rovers pulled themselves away from the danger zone. On the penultimate Saturday of the season with a 3 - 1 home win over doomed Tooting & Mitcham United, and a win at Molesey on the last day to be absolutely sure. As in the previous season, Barton lifted some silverware. This time it was the in the form of the Anglia TV 5 a side Championship. Manager Gordon Brown hoped his second season

RePORtiNG iN

didCOt tOWN 2-1 dUNStabLe tOWN Dunstable started on the front foot and so nearly went ahead with the first attack of the game, with Joe Mead only being narrowly denied. On 11 minutes Chris Wreh pounced on a defensive error and majestically lobbed the ball from 35 yards to put Dunstable one up. A sensational piledriver from Daniel Trif just three minutes later so nearly gave the Town a two- goal cushion which would have been a fair reflection on the opening quarter hour of the game. Didcot came back into the game, and the Dunstable midfield and backline needed to be alert to the increasing attacking intentions of the men in the red and white shirts. James Connell did what was required of him, while John Sonuga and Joe Mead were reading their intentions and keeping direct shots on goal to a minimum. Injury to Alex Taylor just before the half hour caused Manager Tony McCool to use the first of his three substitutes with James Lauder replacing Alex in midfield. Didcot’s equaliser on 39 minutes from Oxford Utd loanee Brando Taverner came after a period of sustained pressure, but minutes later a free- flowing pass and move passage of play involving Chris Wreh, Saul Williams and Daniel Trif, so nearly saw the latter give the lead back to Dunstable. Only the finger tips of Didcot goalkeeper, Leigh Bedwell, diving at full stretch to his right kept Daniel’s shot from nestling in the back of the net. Minutes after the restart, Daniel was at it again, but again Bedwell was up to his task.Dunstable were clearly in the ascendency at the start of the second half as they produced some crisp passing and intelligent running but still couldn’t

get an advantage. Momentum changed as Didcot pressed forward in numbers and Dunstable hearts were in their collective mouths on the hour mark as a Didcot chance landed on the roof of the net and a minute later James Connell needed to be at his best to keep out Brandon Taverner. On 70 minutes Dunstable thought they had gone ahead when a deceptively curling shot from Chris Wreh looked as though it was going in, but struck the upright instead with Bedwell well beaten on his goal line. How important that lick of paint on the upright was became apparent moments later when Seth Humphries sliding in at the back stick got on the end of a searching cross from substitute George Reid to put the Railwaymen 2 – 1 up. There was a tangible sense of relief from the home crowd who knew their Team had been given a real contest in the 80 minutes played thus far. Charlie Black came on for Saul Williams to partner Arel Amu, who had earlier replaced James Lauder, and Daniel Trif & Chris Wreh as Dunstable prepared to throw the proverbial kitchen sink in an attempt to rescue a point. As white shirts pushed forward, Didcot got the ball in the net for a third time, only to see it chalked off due to an Assistant Referee’s raised flag. Dunstable pressed for the elusive equaliser right up to the final whistle with Charlie Black’s last- minute header from a corner being perhaps being the most likely to get a deserved point, but it was not to be.

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

1 December 1959 - Liverpool Gets It Right The Second Time On 1 December 1959, Liverpool FC announced the appointment of Bill Shankly as the club’s new manager. He would go on to become one of the Reds’ most successful managers. After a distinguished playing career that included spells at Partick Thistle, Carlisle United, Preston North End, and the Scottish national team, Shankly turned to management in 1949. His first post was a return to Carlisle, followed by moves to Grimsby Town (195154), Workington (1954-55), and Huddersfield Town (1956-59), before joining Liverpool. He had interviewed for the Liverpool post in 1951, but had been rejected in favor of Don Welsh. When he arrived on Merseyside, Liverpool were sitting in tenth position on the Division

Two table and had not been in the top flight since 1954. Shankly steered them to consecutive third-place finishes in his first two seasons, then earned promotion in 1962 by winning the division. He subsequently guided Liverpool to three league titles (1964, 1966, 1973), two FA Cups (1965, 1974), and one UEFA Cup (1973). Shankly retired in 1974 at the age of 60 and died in 1981.

A Bedford Town Football Club was in existence by 1884, although it changed its name to Bedford Association in 1887. As there were no leagues at the time, the club played friendly matches in cups, including the Kettering Charity Cup and the Luton Charity Cup, before disappearing in 1891. The name Bedford Town reappeared in 1894 when Swifts, a club founded in 1890, were renamed. They absorbed Bedford Rovers in 1896, and although local leagues had been formed, the club continued to play only cup matches and friendlies. However, the club disappeared around the turn of the century. On 31 July 1908 a new Bedford Town was formed at the Association Rooms on Harpur Street. They joined Division One of the Northamptonshire league, finishing bottom of the table in their first two seasons, but avoiding relegation to Division Two. They went on to finish as runners-up for three consecutive seasons between 1911–12 and 1913– 14 before the league closed down due to World War I. They also won the Northamptonshire Senior Cup in 1912–13.

After the war the club continued in the league, finishing as Division One runners-up in 1929–30 before winning the title in 1930–31. The following season saw them finish in second place again, after which they won back-to-back titles in 1932–33 and 1933–34. The league was then renamed the United Counties league, with Bedford finishing as runners-up in 1934–35 and reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 3–2 at home to Dartford. They finished as runners-up in 1936– 37, remaining in the league until World War II. In 1945 Bedford joined the Southern League. They reached the first round of the FA Cup several times in the early 1950s, losing 2–0 at Swindon Town in 1951–52, 4–0 at Weymouth in 1953–54 and 2–0 at Dorchester Town in 1954–55. In 1955 they applied for election to the Football league after finishing eighteenth in the Southern League, but received no votes. The 1955–56 season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup again, and for the first time they progressed to the next round after beating Leyton 3–0.

ON the ROad With the bLUeS The club was established in 1919 as Brotherhoods Engineering Works. They won the league in their first season, but left at the end of the 1922–23 season. The club transferred to Division Three of the Peterborough & District League, which they won in 1925–26, earning promotion to Division Two. The club was dormant in 1929–30 and 1932–33, after which it dropped into Division Three north. Despite only finishing eleventh in 1936– 37, they were elevated to Division Two for the 1937–38 season. After World War II the club were placed in Division One, where they remained until finishing bottom of the table in 1948–49, resulting in relegation to Division Two. In 1952 the division was renamed Division One as the division above became the Premier Division, but the club finished bottom in 1952–53 and were relegated to the new Division Two. In 1963–64 they were relegated again to Division Three South, but returned to Division Two after a single season. In 1973–74 Brotherhoods Engineering Works were relegated to Division Three South for a second time, but returned to Division Two after winning the Division Three South title in 1975–76. Relegated

again in 1979–80, the club returned to Division Two at the first attempt as Division Three South champions, and were promoted to Division One at the end of the 1982–83 season after finishing third. The 1987–88 season saw the club finish as Division One runners-up and earn promotion to the Premier Division. In 1999 the club changed its name to Bearings Direct, and then again in 2001 to Peterborough Sports. In 2006–07 they won the Premier Division, and in 2012–13 were promoted to Division One of the United Counties League after finishing third. In 2015–16 Peterborough Sports were Division One champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division. They also won the League Cup, beating Holbeach United on penalties in the final, as well as the northants Junior Cup and the Hitchingbrooke Cup. The following season saw them win the Premier Division with 112 points, earning promotion to Division One South of the Northern Premier League.
