FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park. We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bedford Town for this fixture. Bedford are pushing for a play-off spot so we can expect a tough game this afternoon against our county neighbours. We’ve already met twice before this season in different competitions, with Bedford getting the upper hand on both occasions. In one of the games you will recall that young Rio DeSilva broke his leg, and it is heartening to see Rio at our recent games with his plaster now removed, and the determination to be back in a Blues shirt in the new season. Today, we welcome our friends from Grovebury Cars (KIA and SSANYONG.) We have just signed a sponsorship agreement with them which includes back of shirt and shorts advertising, together with a number of pitch side boards. We will also soon be announcing other benefits that will be available to supporters from this partnership. There is a mutual desire to work together for the long term and we are delighted to announce this today. Also we welcome the children(and their parents) who have just taken part in another of our Friendly Tournaments at Weatherfields School this morning. Today includes pupils from Totternhoe and Weatherfields Schools ,and is an excellent way for young people to enjoy the game in a non-competitive environment.
I had the privilege to visit St Mary’s Primary School on 29th March, to present prizes to the young people following their sponsored penalty shoot-out. What an excellent school with enthusiastic and passionate children. Every one of them took part in the competition and the thrill of receiving club scarves, medals, footballs, and tickets to our games was evident. Special thanks to Davide Pobbe and Cameron Smart who were excellent ambassadors for the club on shoot out day! Also to Gemma Peacham whose co-ordinating efforts made this event a resounding success. A shout out about the Developments teams recent victory over Westfield the week before last. In a tight game the boys shaded the game with a 1-0 victory. Undoubtedly we will see some of these lads knocking on the door for a 1st Team call up. So keep an eye on the remaining fixtures and pop down if you can to support the team. Finally, and as always, let’s really get behind Gareth and the team this afternoon.
Enjoy the m atch Neil

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK A very warm welcome to Creasey Park this afternoon, especially to Jon and his coaching staff, players and supporters. I hope you all have a pleasant afternoon with us and a safe journey home. This will be our third encounter with Bedford this season (albeit first at Creasey Park) following 2 very dramatic matches for different reasons. The first saw an entertaining and exciting cup game that resulted us being knocked out on penalties. More recently in December saw we travelled to The Eyrie again in the league, where our promising young midfielder Rio Da Silva fractured his Tibia. I am pleased to say that Rio is making great progress in his rehabilitation program and like all of us, I’m sure you wish him well and are looking forward to seeing him in a Dunstable Town shirt again. We are fully prepared and expecting a hard fought game, that has significant importance for both teams. Bedford are currently sitting 4th in the league and fill one of the last two remaining playoff spots by one point. We are obviously battling to finish as high up the table as we can. Rest assured we will continue that quest until the last kick of the final game. Saturday away to Barton saw us pick up our first point in 6 matches and halted a poor run of defeats. I was pleased with the performance at Barton, as I felt we dominated large spells of the game and should have capitalised on more of the chances that we created, especially in
the first half. That said, in the position we are in, every point is an important one. I thought the lads put in a shift and showed more composure in possession than in previous recent matches. Gedeon Okito and Saul Williams were available again following their suspensions, as well as having Hassan Sheik back into the squad in injury. This is also my first opportunity in the Manager’s notes to welcome Charlie Oddy and Folabo Agunbiade in to the squad. Charlie is on loan to us from Burton Albion. I have been very impressed with him since he arrived and can see him being an important acquisition for the run in. Folabo aka ‘Folly’ is a quick forward who has integrated well into the squad and showed some promising quality during a recent match for the Development Team. I am also delighted to have signed Kamran Khan, Ismael Toure and Cameron Wynard from Colin’s development squad. Again showing clear evidence of the club’s developmental pathway philosophy in action. Finally I would like to thank all of you for your continued support this afternoon. Your voices, singing, clapping and cheering always gives the lads a lift. I hope you all enjoy the game and cheers us on to an important 3 points.

BEDFORD TOWN HISTORY A Bedford Town Football Club was in existence by 1884, although it changed its name to Bedford Association in 1887. As there were no leagues at the time, the club played friendly matches in cups, including the Kettering Charity Cup and the Luton Charity Cup, before disappearing in 1891. The name Bedford Town reappeared in 1894 when Swifts, a club founded in 1890, were renamed. They absorbed Bedford Rovers in 1896, and although local leagues had been formed, the club continued to play only cup matches and friendlies. However, the club disappeared around the turn of the century. On 31 July 1908 a new Bedford Town was formed at the Association Rooms on Harpur Street. They joined Division One of the Northamptonshire League, finishing bottom of the table in their first two seasons, but avoiding relegation to Division Two. They went on to finish as runners-up for three consecutive seasons between 1911–12 and 1913–14 before the league closed down due to World War I. They also won the Northamptonshire Senior Cup in 1912–13. After the war the club continued in the league, finishing as Division One runnersup in 1929–30 before winning the title in 1930–31. The following season saw them finish in second place again, after which they won back-to-back titles in 1932–33 and 1933–34. The league was then renamed the United Counties League, with Bedford finishing as runners-up in 1934–
35 and reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 3–2 at home to Dartford. They finished as runners-up again i n 1936–37, remaining in the league until World War II. In 1945 Bedford joined the Southern League. They reached the first round of the FA Cup several times in the early 1950s, losing 2–0 at Swindon Town in 1951–52, 4–0 at Weymouth in 1953–54 and 2–0 at Dorchester Town in 1954–55. In 1955 they applied for election to the Football League after finishing eighteenth in the Southern League, but received no votes. The 1955–56 season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup again, and for the first time they progressed to the next round after beating Leyton 3–0. The second round saw them defeat Football League opposition for the first time as they won 3–2 against Watford, before being drawn against Arsenal in the third round. The first match at Highbury ended 2–2, with Arsenal winning the replay 2–1. They applied for election to the Football League again following a third-place finish in the Southern League, but again failed to receive a vote. In the following season the club again beat Football League opposition in the FA Cup, defeating Norwich City 4–2 at Carrow Road before losing 1–0 at Reading. They finished as runners-up in both 1956–57 and
BEDFORD TOWN HISTORY 1957–58, again applying unsuccessfully for Football League membership, although they received one vote in 1957 and two in 1958. The Southern League was split into North-West and South-East divisions for the 1958–59 season, with Bedford winning the South-East section and going on to beat North-West champions Hereford United 2–1 in a championship play-off at Edgar Street. Despite winning the Southern League, they failed to receive a single vote in the 1959 Football League elections.
City 2–1 in the first round, Brighton & Hove Albion 2–1 in a second replay in the second round. Hereford United were then defeated 2–1 in the third round, before a fourth round tie saw them lose 3–0 at home to Everton in front of a record crowd of 18,407. Another cup run in 1966–67 resulted in a second round win over Oxford United before a 6–2 defeat at home to Peterborough United in the third round.
The following season saw further league re-organisation, with Bedford placed in the new Premier Division; their FA Cup campaign ended with a 4–0 first round defeat at Gillingham. However, the mid1960s was an extremely successful period for the club in the cup; in 1962–63 they reached the second round where they were again beaten by Gillingham. The following season saw them beat nonLeague opposition in the first and second round before being drawn against Second Division Newcastle United in the third round. A trip to St James’ Park resulted in a 2–1 win for Bedford, before they were defeated 3–0 by Carlisle United in the fourth round in front of a then-record crowd of 17,858. The club were prevented from applying for Football League membership that year as they had signed players from the league without paying transfer fees. The 1965–66 season saw them reach the fourth round again, beating Exeter
However, that season saw them finish second-from-bottom in the league, resulting in relegation to Division One. The following season saw them promoted in third place, but they were relegated again in 1968–69. However, a second immediate return to the top division was secured when they won Division One in 1969–70. Bedford were relegated again at the end of the 1973–74 season, but won Division One North at the first attempt to return to the Premier Division, also reaching the semi-finals of the FA Trophy, eventually losing 6–2 on aggregate to Scarborough. The club had continued to apply for Football League membership every season between 1965 and 1973, and after a hiatus in 1974, made their eighteenth and final bid for Football League membership in 1975, but were again unsuccessful, leaving them with the second-highest number of unsuccessful applications after Yeovil Town.

THE COMMUNITY FOOTBALL PATHWAY In the early days of the supporters’ takeover of Dunstable Town FC in the Summer of 2017, it had become obvious to the new committee that the club had to reset itself at all levels. It had to develop new and meaningful partnerships with key stakeholders within the local community and the football authorities. None more so, then with the Bedfordshire FA. One of the first actions of the restructured club was to take its concept of creating a Community Pathway Club that would fundamentally change the direction, ethos and focus of the club.
the club’s first Community School of the Season and secondly, with St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, which has become the club’s first Primary School Football Hub and recently ran a penalty shoot-out competition for students in conjunction with the club.
The Bedfordshire FA through its dynamic team of Football Development staff have, enthusiastically embraced the club’s vision and set about assisting the club in making it a reality. The first strand to be dealt with, was to ensure the club was compliant with all aspects and criteria relating to the FA Charter Standard. Additionally, the club had to further develop its football provision from a community perspective, in relation to creating Ability Counts and Girls’ teams. The ambition was to become a goldstandard FA Charter Standard Community Club that had distinct footballing pathways for all members of the community.
In turn, since 2017, to the club has run Friendly Football Tournaments at Weatherfield Academy twice a season during the Autumn and Summer terms. These tournaments involve a mix of Year 4, 5 and 6 primary school boys and girls, who do not play for either an organised football team or their school team. It is an opportunity for these young people to have an enjoyable kickaround that is not competitive or pressurised. They receive a participation medal, are treated to lunch at the club and are the club mascots for the first team home match that takes place after the tournament has ended. Children from Weatherfield, Totternhoe, Kensworth, Vale Academy and St Mary’s have entered teams for these most friendly of tournaments.
The second strand was to enhance the club’s fledgling Community Football Initiative. This was developed, by creating working relationships with local schools. Firstly, with Totternhoe Church of England Primary School, which became
The most important development was the club working together with the Development Officers and senior leaders at the school, to create Ability Counts teams that would run out of Weatherfield Academy. This was achieved in two ways.
Firstly, the club appealed to its fan base to support the funding of purchasing of kit to set up two Young Adult Ability Counts teams. One generous fan duly obliged. The club was up and running with its Dunstable Town Lions and Dunstable Town Blues playing in the Bedfordshire FA Ability Counts leagues, leading to entering the 2018 and 2019 FA Peoples Cup, which the club has co-hosted at Creasey Park with the Bedfordshire FA. Secondly, working with the Development Officers the club applied for a Football Foundation Grow the Game Grant to create an Ability Counts Girls team as well as its first mainstream Girls team for Under 8s players. The club was successful in its application and the Ability Girls team has been set up The Dunstable Town Lionesses have played friendly matches as well as entering the 2019 FA Peoples Cup. The third strand was to develop Girls and Women’s football teams with the professed aim in our FA Charter Standard application to have at least one Girls team at all youth and junior age groups as well as setting up a Women’s Development Team and First Team. As part of this process, working with the Development Officers, we applied to become an SSE Wildcats Centre for Girls Football and our bid was successful. This centre will be run out of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Dunstable, which will also run the club’s Under 8s Girls team. As Josh Spavins has stated “It has been refreshing to work with a football club to develop a number of new initiatives that will benefit the local community.”
The fourth strand was to develop the coaches and officials of the club. This has included the Bedfordshire FA facilitating a partnership between the club and the University of Bedfordshire, as well as a club official attending the prestigious FA Mentoring Adults Course. Additionally, as James Petty has highlighted “That as a reward for the fantastic work, commitment and progression shown by the club, Bedfordshire FA nominated the club to be a recipient of the FA Coach Mentor Scheme for the 2018-19 season”. The club duly joined the scheme and its youth and junior team coaches have, throughout the season, received 50 hours of one-to-one peer support and mentoring from designated FA Mentor Caches. This has had a profound and positive impact on the club and the coaches. All these developments have led to the club working to apply for and be successful in gaining FA Charter Standard Community Status. This could not have been achieved without the commitment, diligence and enthusiasm shown by all the Development Officers at the Bedfordshire FA. We leave the final words to James Petty who points out that – “It is an exciting time for the football club. We look forward to further developments and working on new initiatives with the club in the coming seasons.”
REPORTING IN
BARTON ROVERS 1-1 DUNSTABLE TOWN Brilliant sunshine and a cloudless sky were the order of the day as Dunstable kicked off heading down the slight slope towards the car park end. Dunstable started brightly and with a spring in their step. On six minutes Charlie Black broke free from his markers and was only denied by some brave goalkeeping from Gary Malone. Charlie Oddy powered forward on several occasions and looked sharp, skilful and tenacious in the tackle. The return of Gedeon Okito and Saul Williams looked to give the side greater stability and bite. For Barton Victor Osubu’s pace was telling and a threat throughout the afternoon. His movement down the right and crosses into the box proved a challenge for the Dunstable defenders, although one they were thankfully up to, and when a cross did find a home shirt, shots were either blocked, saved or off target. On target, but for a coat of paint was Hassan Sheikh shortly before the half hour with a freekick, which evaded the wall and left keeper Gary Malone, possibly unsighted, stationary, as the ball cannoned off the post. A few minutes later & Hassan was again involved in an intricate piece of play, linking up with Alex Taylor & Charlie Black which again required Gary Malone to be alert and up to the task. This was a good period of sustained Dunstable possession and pressure as more white shirts pressed forward. Just six minutes after Hassan hit the post, Alex Taylor thought he’d put the Blues ahead only to see his effort pushed on to the post by Gary Malone. This all the result of a flowing move involving several Dunstable players and a fine cross by Gedeon Okito. Daniel Trif looked to get forward at every
opportunity and with Erin Amu’s clever runs and Charlie Black’s refusal to give up on any ball punted forward, Dunstable looked good value to go into the break on even terms or perhaps even a goal to the good. As we entered stoppage time in the first half, Dunstable had a corner which was cleared up field, and although Connor Coulson was quickly down to save the first effort, he could do nothing to prevent Tony Williams firing in from close range. Perceived football wisdom has it that a goal scored just before half time gives a team a psychological boost apparently better than most other times during a game. If this was the case then Dunstable came out for the second half ready to try and get back on equal terms. A Charlie Oddy run and cross so nearly delivered and a few minutes later the tireless running of Saul Williams almost brought a reward as he was inches away from guiding the ball past Gary Malone. The equaliser when it did come, came on 58 minutes from the boot of Charlie Black who ran on to a delightful through ball from Hassan Sheikh to guide the ball past the advancing Gary Malone. The relief among the players and Dunstable supporters was palpable. Three minutes later John Sonuga was on the end of a corner but his effort was cleared off the line. Gary Malone was the busier of the two keepers now as Dunstable tried to find a second. On 67 minutes he was at full stretch to keep out a Saul Williams effort. However as hard as they tried, Dunstable could not find a way through again.

6 APRIL 1996 - MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER KICKS OFF On 6 April 1996, the San Jose Clash hosted DC United for the inaugural Major League Soccer match. San Jose won, 1-0, but United went on to win the league title. The new league was part of the deal that brought the World Cup to the United States in 1994. Only ten teams contested that first season, followed by a playoff tournament to decide the league champion. In addition to the tournament, MLS departed from the International Football Association Board rules by using a countdown clock (which paused for stoppages of play) and shootouts to decide matches that were even at the end of regulation. It looked as if the shootout procedure might be needed in that first game, played before
a capacity crowd of 31,683 at San Jose’s Spartan Stadium. But with two minutes left, Clash forward Eric Wynalda dribbled into the DC United box, beat one defender, then split two others to fire a shot into the far corner of the net. It was the very first goal scored in MLS and was enough to give the victory to the Clash. In 1999, the Clash renamed themselves the Earthquakes, taking the name from the city’s old NASL team. The team moved to Houston in 2006 and became the Dynamo, while the Earthquakes name and records remained in San Jose. After a two-year hiatus, the Earthquakes team rejoined MLS in 2008.

Perhaps programmes will become increasingly digital. Clubs across the country and even the world are already experimenting with online editions, the use of QR codes on tickets to bring the latest copy direct to your phone, it will be fascinating to see how they evolve. By many accounts, sales are falling and combined with the increasing in costs, you can understand why clubs are exploring other options or dropping them altogether. When Football League clubs have voted on a decision to stop them being mandatory, it can be expected to filter down.
Perhaps I’m one of the dying breed who still enjoys seeing what clubs can produce. We must not forget how demanding it is for volunteers in Non-League to put all this together, let alone when the weather hits and scuppers all that hard work.
