FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome back to Creasey Park this afternoon for the return fixture against todays opponents Biggleswade United. Our first encounter saw a draw as Biggleswade bounced back after the Blues had taken a two goal lead. Biggleswade are going well at the moment but after successive victories our boys are confident of continuing their run. On that basis we welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Biggleswade United with much anticipation.
and we have big hopes for DTFC TV.
What an encouraging week we’ve just enjoyed! On the back of our away victory at Crawley Green, we followed this up with a 5 star 5 goal performance against a good Oxhey Jets side. This game had everything. 7 goals, 3 sin bins, a sending off and a penalty. Those who attended got full value for their admission money. This performance, score, and result has been brewing for a while, as the training ground work is now beginning to pay off. Hats off to Gareth, the coaching team, and the players, you deserve this weeks accolades. Previous adversity makes these victories all the sweeter.
Finally, a reminder that you can sponsor a game for as little as £100. If this is something that you and your friends would like to pursue please have a word with myself or any other members of the committee.
At the time of writing we are really enjoying the first week of DTFC TV. This initiative, developed by Tyler Dunnell, enables the club to improve its interaction with both existing and prospective supporters. We hope you enjoy the behind the scenes insights, interviews, and highlights. If you’ve not yet given it a view I encourage you to do so. We are constantly trying to develop our all-round offering as a club
Last Saturday we made two presentations to Daniel Trif to mark the occasion of his 100 appearances for the Blues, one from The Regiment and one from the club. This young man is held in a such high esteem and his grateful humility further cemented how much he is an integral part of our club and its philosophy. His performance on the day was the icing on the cake. In fact a quick view of DTFC TV has a special feature on Dan.
Enjoy the game, thank you for your ongoing support, and here’s to hopefully three more points.
Neil
BIGGLESWADE UNITED HISTORY Biggleswade United Football Club was reformed on the 16th July 1959. However, local history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at Second Meadow as early as 1929. Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three of the North Herts. League (NHL). After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League (SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One they sought fresh fields. The club joined the Herts Senior League but continued to find the going tough. In 1986 they elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District Football League and began to build again. The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 1987/88 proved to be the turning point in the club’s fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous amount of success on and off the football pitch. The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club’s history – winning five major honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship, League Cup Championship and as the League’s representatives the club won the Beds. FA Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season they celebrated a Division One
“double” by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. They also retained the Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition’s history to achieve this feat. To crown our success the club were awarded the SML Special Achievement Trophy in July 1997. In the season 1997/98 they finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely hard working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 they played our firstever floodlit game at Second Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier Cup. The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve “Snowy” Wright and under his management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club made three Beds FA Senior Challenge Cup final appearances, winning two of the three with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy’s other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts Premier Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup,
BIGGLESWADE UNITED HISTORY the SML Division One Cup and the SML Special Achievement Award once again. The end of the 2006/07 saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick Burton taking over the first team reins.
as chairman at the club seeing Phil Childs step away from the role midway through the season.
The 2006-2007 season marked a crucial time in the club’s history with the formation of a youth structure that sees Biggleswade girls and boys aged 7 to 18 able to be part of Biggleswade United. They now have twelve youth teams including three girls’ teams with a well established youth committee. The profile of the club as a community club is very much boosted by the association with such a well organised and well structured youth set up.
Guillem Balagué, the Sky Sports presenter and renowned author joined the club as Director of Football in October 2014 with the view of helping guide Biggleswade United to new heights of success on and off the pitch. The club went straight on to win the North Beds Charity Cup in May 2015 under the managerial guidance of Mick Reardon and Mark Royal.
January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the Football Foundation they installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a double turnstile entrance and players’ secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E status. After several years of stability in terms of first team managers the next six years saw a regular turnover of first team and reserve team managers with Nick Burton, Dave Elkin and Phil Childs all taking over the first team reins for a time. At the start of the 2013/14 season they appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first team managers both of whom have enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the players. Chris Lewis also took over
In June 2015 the club appointed a whole new coaching set up for the 2015/16 season lead by Head Coach, Cristian Colas. The club went on to record 3 successive highest place finishes in the Spartan South Midlands League during the 2015/16 season – 2017/18 seasons, finishing 8th in May 2018. The club appointed a new coaching team headed up the ex Stevenage FC coach Jimmy Martin in May 2018 with the view to taking the club to new levels of success.

REPORTING IN
OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST OXHEY JETS A second brace of the week for Chris Stapleton, a Harry Shepherd strike and a double for Joe Hankins saw the Jets grounded as Dunstable soared to a victory at Creasey Park on Saturday. Dunstable started well, with Eric Ameyaw having his early header cleared away, but it was the away team who found themselves ahead when Louis Bircham headed past a full-stretch Dan Gould. After a short spell of pressure from Oxhey, Dunstable levelled when Hankins charged down goalkeeper Filip Chalupniczak’s attempted clearance and saw his block send the ball into the back of the net. The turnaround was completed midway through the first half when the in-form Stapleton, chasing a pass but not looking the favourite to get there, managed to nick the ball from the defender, turn inside to shoot towards the far corner, and when Chalupniczak parried, Harry Shepherd was on hand to turn in the rebound. Gould was not totally unworked though, and produced a fine save from a Luke Preedy shot which looked to be dipping underneath the crossbar. The Blues were looking the more threatening side, and could have extended their lead when Davide Pobbe found himself with time and space to line up a long-range drive which clattered against the crossbar via the fingertips of Chalupniczak. The home crowd were baying for more. More opportunities were created, but it wasn’t until Joe Hankins was felled inside the box just before half-time that Stapleton was able to add a third, with a calm penalty sending the keeper the wrong way. A confrontation followed
which resulted in a yellow card for Chalupniczak. The Blues looked hungry for more in the second half, and Eric Ameyaw again came close, but again saw his header cleared off the line. Oxhey Jets made their task even harder when an incident on the hour mark saw Jamie Speer sinbinned, and then ultimately red-carded, and then saw goalscorer Bircham sinbinned. The result was put beyond doubt with twentyfive minutes left when Stapleton took a long ball, cut inside Ashley Lewis, and fired into the top corner past a flailing Chalupniczak, for his fourth goal in two games. Jets pressed on though, and Gould was again called into action when Sean Giordmaina was through one-on-one, but Gould came out on top, getting down low quickly to save. With eighteen minutes left Harry Shepherd was sinbinned, and when Luke Preedy fired into the top-corner to make it 4-2, it looked like it could be a nervy finale to the game. But with the away side providing no cuttingedge, and the Town backline defending capably, the chance for Joe Hankins to add a fifth came when he latched onto a ball down the line, outmuscled Jude Bell, and slotted the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper. Daniel Trif provided a perfect cross in stoppage time, giving Hankins the chance for his hat-trick, but he was unable to direct his header on target.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS
ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE In Saturdays programme we were talking about Godlove Oppong making a couple of appearances for the Development team. He went on to make another appearance on Thursday night at Creasey Park and scored his first goal In front of his former 18s managers Wayne Upton and Tyler Dunnell. Other good news coming our way this week is that Gianluca Sinatra, another of our 18s, has gone out on loan with Berkhamsted Raiders, to get game time so good luck to Gianluca. Lastly how could we not mention this guy from our first team, Daniel Trif. 100

1 FEBRUARY 1958 - THE REAL LUTHER BLISSETT On 1 February 1958, Luther Blissett was born in Jamaica. The striker, who moved to England at a young age, joined Watford’s youth team in 1974, then signed a professional contract with the Fourth Division side one year later. His first two seasons were unremarkable, but he began scoring at a rapid pace in the 1977-78 season and helped Watford climb the league table all the way to the First Division by 1982. That season in the top flight was Blissett’s best with a total of 27 goals in 41 appearances. His performance caught the eye of Italian giants AC Milan, who signed him in June 1983 for £1M. But his form remained in England and he scored only six times in 39 appearances across all competitions before Milan sold him back to Watford for £550,000 in the summer of 1984. He remained there for another four
years, then moved to Bournemouth for three seasons before returning to Watford for a third and final time. By the time he left again in 1992, he had set club records for appearances (503) and goals (183). He retired 1994 after brief spells with Bury and Mansfield Town and also made a total of 14 appearances for England. In 1994, a group of political and cultural activists in Italy adopted Blissett’s name as a collective pseudonym for a series of pranks, saying “anyone can be Luther Blissett simply by adopting the name Luther Blissett.” Use of the name quickly spread across Europe and the United States and was attached to a variety of activities, including one novel written under Blissett’s name. The real Luther Blissett joked about participating, but is not actually a part of the project.
