FROM THE BOARDROOM A very warm welcome back to Creasey Park for the 2019/20 season. Sadly, we ended last season in a poor run of form which ultimately led to our relegation. Not something we had anticipated back in February and to be honest a very tough pill to swallow. That said, it’s not good to dwell too long on negatives and we look forward with much optimism to the campaign in the Spartan South Midlands League. We start the season with three home games, two in the league and one in the FA Cup. We welcome our visitors Broadfields United today 3rd August, and Baldock Town on the 6th August . We then host Chipping Sodbury on 10th August in the FA Cup. Broadfields will be enjoying their first season at this level after their runners up spot in 2018/2019 and we welcome their players, officials and supporters to Creasey Park, and trust that they will enjoy their visit if not the result! Baldock Town are coming off the back of a very credible finish in this division last season, and their re-emergence over the last few years is testament to the hard work behind the scenes. We wish them well and look forward to a competitive fixture. In the close season we reappointed Gareth Jackson to the manager’s position and we welcome his assistant Ryan Sturges, who brings much recent playing experience and contacts at this level. They have been busy assembling a squad, which will showcase a number of new faces to
complement those who have returned. Pre- season has been encouraging, and there is a real team spirit emerging and a good number of really eye catching goals to get the juices flowing. Off the field it’s been as busy as always. We have an active and committed committee who freely give of their time, energy, and skill to make us the best that we can be. I am so grateful for their continued enthusiasm and positivity. We have some great deals on Season Tickets and Players Sponsorship, with prices even more competitive than in previous seasons. We’d love you to sign up to these. In addition, we have established our Junior Blues section, which amongst a whole host of benefits, has a number of great discount deals with local sponsors and businesses for the juniors and their families. This is also another step in establishing ourselves as a truly family club. More of that in the coming weeks. So, again, welcome and let’s really get behind Gareth, Ryan and the boys, as we seek to bounce back in style.
Enjoy the g ame Neil

GAFFER’S NOTES Welcome to Creasey Park for the start of a new and exciting season. A special greeting also to Liam Bird, his staff, players and the supporters of Broadfields United. I hope you all have a pleasant afternoon and safe journey home after the game. I also extend that welcome to Adam Fisher, his staff, players and supporters of Baldock Town. I’m writing this prior to both of our opening matches. However regardless of Baldock’s opening result, we are expecting a very tough challenge from a team who finished 5th in the league last season and had some very good preseason results. I wish them all well and hope they have a safe journey home after the game. To my knowledge Broadfield United are a new opponent for us this afternoon, as I cannot recall playing them before in recent times. They did very well last season in securing a 2nd place promotion into the division and like us will be keen to start the season strongly and get some early points on the board. As I hope you can see, many things have happened since April, both on and off the pitch with regards to new players and new first team staff, so allow me to introduce my new management team: Firstly my Assistant Manager Ryan Sturges, who I first met a few years ago whilst he was a player at Tring Athletic, where I was coaching at the time. It became clear quite quickly that we shared similar footballing philosophies and remained in
contact throughout the rest of his playing career. He is sound tactician who has a wealth of experience and is now a very valued member of my staff. During the close season Ryan and I have employed Wayne Upton as a first team coach, Rory McMullan as our goalkeeper coach and Brad Cawthorne our new performance analyst. During the summer we also said goodbye to our sports therapist Seana, who has been accepted on a new career pathway as a paramedic. We thank her and wish her every success in her new career. Following Seana’s departure, we have employed an excellent new sports therapist in Tasos Psarras. Today is his first game with us and I’m sure everyone in the club will make him feel welcome. On the pitch you will also see many new faces. Recruitment has been non-stop throughout the summer with a mixture of experience and youth coming into the squad. I am also very happy to state that there has been a number of players that have remained from last season’s campaign namely Ben Collins, Daniel Trif, Kieran Ogden, Davide Pobbe, Marius Patru and Ehban Nancarrow-Martin. We are also delighted to welcome back Rio Dasilva after his horrific broken leg back in December. I am sure that the old and the new will entertain you all this season with good exciting football. So please keep clapping and cheering!
BROADFIELDS UNITED HISTORY The club was established in 1993, and joined the Southern Olympian League. They were Division Four champions in 1994–95, after which they joined Division One of the Middlesex County League. The following season it was renamed the Senior Division, and Broadfields were champions, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Despite finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1998–99, they were not relegated. However, in 2003–04 the club finished bottom of the Premier Division again and subsequently left the league. They returned in 2007, joining Division One West. Despite finishing second-frombottom of the division, they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008–09 season. They withdrew from the league towards the end of the 2009–10 season, resulting in their record being expunged, but returned to the Premier Division for the 2010–11 season. In 2011–12 Broadfields won the Premier Division Cup, retaining it the following season. In 2014–15 a terrific end to the season saw Ryan Duffy and Chris Webster lead their side to promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League Division One. The side lost just one of their final ten games and were granted promotion on the final day. The 2015/16 season was the clubs first season in Spartan South Midlands League football saw them achieve an 11th place
finish. The side also reached the semifinal of the Division One Cup. The Sunday Side completed a quadruple, winning the Harrow Sunday Challenge Premier Division, the Premier Cup, the Champions Cup and the Jack Walker Cup. In the 2016/17 season the First team, under the guidance of Mark Barnham, Liam Bird & Ryan Duffy, won the Middlesex Premier Cup by defeating Hillingdon Borough 4-1 at Northwood FC’s ground. They also reached the second round proper of the FA Vase. The 2017/18 season saw he First team, under the guidance of Liam Bird, Mark Barnham & Ryan Duffy, successfully defend the Middlesex Premier Cup by defeating landlords, Harefield 1-0 at Harrow Borough FC. Success continued 5 days later when they triumphed in the Spartan League Challenge Trophy cup final when they beat Risborough Rangers in the final 3-1. Finally, first time in the club’s history, they booked a place in the FA Cup for the forthcoming season after finishing 4th in the league. In 2018-19 Broadfields finished second to high flying and the clubs landlords, Harefield United, leading to promotion to Sthe Premier Division and Step 5 football.

REPORTING IN
OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST LEIGHTON TOWN Dunstable Town’s final home game of the preseason saw Leighton Town make the short trip to Creasey Park, and play out an entertaining game which saw both teams coming from behind to lead, but ultimate ended in a draw.
plenty of time and space to pick his spot and fire past the outrushing goalkeeper.
Chances were forged for both sides early on, the best of which were headers, with Chris Stapleton unable to get clean enough contact for the Blues, and Leighton Town heading a dangerous free-kick wide.
In the second half it was Osei-Addo who turned provider, when he held the ball up well, waiting for the right option, which turned out to be Da Silva, who this time calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
With quarter of an hour on the clock Leighton Town were awarded a penalty after a late challenge on the edge of the box. But the chance was squandered, with Mackenzie Taylor saving well with his feet.
On the hour, Leighton Town made several substitutions, and started to press for an equaliser, with one volleyed effort so far off target that perhaps the visitors found the ball on their return to Leighton Buzzard.
Five minutes later the visitors were punished when Chris Stapleton gave Dunstable fans more reason to be optimistic for the coming season, with an unstoppable header into the bottom right corner of the net. Dunstable then looked to extend the advantage, when Seb Smith sent a long ball out wide to Stapleton, who coolly turned his man and cut back to Rio Da Silva, who thundered a shot against the bar.
But two goals in four minutes saw the game again turned on its head, with a cool sidefooted drive into the bottom corner, and a header from a corner giving Leighton the lead.
After a drinks break, due to the hot weather, Leighton Town turned the game on its head with two goals in six minutes. The first saw a free-kick into a dangerous area ricochet past Taylor in the Dunstable goal, the second saw the Leighton Town attacker round the keeper to slot home. But Dunstable again showed they would not wilt under the pressure of going behind, and were level five minutes before the break when Kelvin Osei-Addo was put through with
But, perhaps predictably, it was that man Chris Stapleton who had the last word. With twelve minutes left to play, a deep cross looked to have too much pace on it, when Stapleton hurled himself towards it, and with the cleanest of contact, headed the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE
As we approach the start of the 19/20 season, I would like to introduce myself. I am Kristy Lewington and I am the new Youth Secretary for this season. I have also been the Club Welfare Officer for the last three seasons. We have 22 youth teams under our Dunstable Town banner starting with our Development Centre, which is for 4-6-year olds, as well as two girls’ teams, two ability counts teams, a development team and our first team. I would like to thank our Chairman from the previous seasons Martin Jeffs, who has now stepped down from this position, but is staying within the club for help and advice should we need to call on him. He has been a valuable part of this club for many years and without his help the club would not be where it is today. The youth committee is formed of the following people, so should there be any issues or concerns then they are always there to help: Chairman - Vince Dunnell Vice Chairman - Adrian Dunne Secretary - Kristy Lewington Treasurer - Christian Baxter Coaches Rep - Steve Lewington Social Media - Tyler Dunnell Today’s mascots are our new under 7s Cubs team who are managed by our development team player Tyler Dunnell. We welcome the boys and their parents to the club.
We also have our under 10s Phoenix team as mascots, who are managed by our new first team coach Wayne Upton. Please make sure you give them a big cheer before kick-off and during their half time kick about.
Kristy Lewington

3 AUGUST 1952 - SINGER, ACTOR, SPURS SUPERSTAR On 3 August 1952, World Cup winner and Tottenham Hotspur Hall-of-Famer Osvaldo “Ossie” Ardiles was born in Bell Ville, Argentina. The midfielder made his professional debut in 1973 for Argentinian club Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba and he earned his first international cap for Argentina’s senior side that same year. Five years and two clubs later (Belgrano, 1974, and Huracán, 1975-78) he was a regular for the national team, starting in every match but one of Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign. After the 1978 World Cup, he moved to Tottenham where he quickly became a fan favorite along with his fellow Argentinian teammate Ricardo Villa.
The central midfield pair brought success to Spurs, helping them win back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982 (during that time, Ardiles also co-starred with Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, and Pelé in the 1981 film Victory and recorded the single “Ossie’s Dream” with Chas & Dave in 1981). Villa left in 1983, but Ardiles remained and went on to win the 1984 UEFA Cup with Tottenham. He left Spurs in 1988, but returned to manage the club briefly from 1993 to 1994. In 2008, he and Villa were jointly inducted into Tottenham’s Hall of Fame.
