inside the boardroom Home & away, rain or shine, behind the goal we were attacking, replica shirt & leather jacket It’s always a pleasure to host Broadfields Utd, a genuine family run Club who have been the most respectful and gracious hosts and visitors whenever we have played them. Today is no exception and the significance of the occasion and the meaning and importance of family is particularly apt today. We wish Ryan and Conor Duffy and all their colleagues from Broadfields Utd a very warm welcome to Creasey Park, and irrespective of the result the bond that has been created between the Clubs will be the winner this afternoon. Two weeks ago, and only hours after the final whistle had blown, we lost one of our own. Aaron Bateman was only 28 years old and had been enjoying a night out with dad, Ian and several other Club colleagues when he lost his life. Today is our opportunity to remember Aaron and all he meant to us. My overriding memory of Aaron was his smile. He was always smiling. As a Dunstable Town fan, that’s not been the easiest of things to manage for the past few years, but somehow Aaron managed it, far better than I ever could. He was sharp, witty and had an amazing memory for Club trivia. He was kind, and gentle and a super young man who we were proud to have as one of our fans. Home and away, rain or shine, behind whichever goal we were attacking, replica shirt and leather jacket. That was Aaron. It didn’t matter to Aaron whether we were at Maidstone playing in an FA Cup tie in front of
2,000 people or a pre-season friendly watched by the proverbial three men and a dog, Aaron wore our colours with pride. Words can never adequately convey the pain that we carry but to all his family and friends you have my word that Aaron will be remembered by all of us associated with the Club and the wider Dunstable Town Family. We want today to be a special occasion and an opportunity for those that knew Aaron to be able to show their respects in a place we knew he felt part of the bigger Club family. What’s important today is that Ian & Charlotte feel the love for Aaron that is overflowing for him. There will be a minute’s applause before kick off and the players will be wearing black armbands as a sign of respect. My utmost thanks to James Slack & his team, Andrzej Juraszek and Simon “Rusty” Bullard for their agreement in naming the stand behind the goal by the main entrance, The Aaron Bateman Stand. Football rivalries disappear when tragedy occurs so further thanks to John at Leighton Town, Ben at Hertford Town & Simon from AFC, who have all gone the extra mile in the last fortnight. Thanks also to Arone Thasan for his help with today’s arrangements. And finally, thanks to all of you for attending the game this afternoon and helping remember the precious life that has been lost. Aaron Bateman. In our hearts always. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Broadfields United - 3

Welcome to the management, players, committee members and supporters of Broadfields United ahead of today’s clash. During my albeit relatively short career as a Head Coach it is fair to say I have had many tough issues to deal with off the field. This week’s programme notes have without a doubt been the toughest to write during my management career. Today marks our 1st game since the tragic passing of our wonderful supporter and owner Aaron Bateman. It was 2 weeks ago that Aaron was stood with the Regiment cheering us on against Ardley United. Like all the Regiment their support is heard by us all and whilst we may not be huge in numbers, we are huge in sprit and noise. Aaron played a big part in that and is a member of the Dunstable Town family that will never be replaced and certainly never forgotten. There are no words to write or say that will ever be able to eradicate the pain or the loss for Aaron’s family. I was personally privileged to be able to spend a bit of time with Aaron in the bar after the game against Ardley and it was great to have Aaron, Ian and Scottie sit with the lads and talk football. Aaron sat with a beer and a beaming smile which is always welcomed in the Dunstable Town family. I remember him covering his Dad Ian’s face with a cake that the Chairman had purchased much to the delight of the players and management. It epitomised what Dunstable Town meant to Aaron and what Aaron meant to us all. Too often in life we perhaps don’t say the things that we should say to our friends and
4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Harefield United broadfields-print.indd 4
family, we always work on the assumption that tomorrow is promised. I have personally had a lot of reflection time since Aaron’s tragic loss as I am sure most people that knew and loved Aaron have. I have seen the devastation and incredible feeling of loss that everyone who knew Aaron has felt. I always think that the sign of how someone is missed after their passing is always a true reflection of the way they were loved by so many. I take a small consolation in that Aaron was at the game where we continued our unbeaten run to 11 games. We saw him smiling, joking and being a part of the Dunstable Town family at the end of the game. It is imperative that we all ensure his memory lives on through us all each Saturday, starting with today. There is not a tribute that will ever compensate for the loss of Aaron and the effects on Ian and Charlotte. We will do our best today to honour and celebrate Aaron’s life in the way he would have hoped and that is by doing all we can to achieve 3 points. I hope Ian, Charlotte and Aaron’s family always know that as a management team and group of players we will always be there for them in any way we can. I will be honest with you all that I was undecided about whether to talk about the game or football related business in my programme notes. There is no right or wrong answer about how people deal with grief. I lost my Dad very suddenly and unexpectedly last August and remember all I wanted to do was get back to some degree of a new normal as quickly as possible. I think it is important to honour Aaron’s memory by being as normal as we can be during this time. Aaron was extremely passionate about Dunstable

notes from the bench This week’s programme notes have without a doubt been the toughest to write during my management career Town and loved his football so I would like to think he would tell me to give the Regiment and the supporters some football news this week and update you all. After last weekend where so many fixtures were decimated by stormy weather it is a welcome relief to get back playing this week. Our last meeting with Broadfields was our 1st win as the Dunstable Town management team and a hard fought one on the day. Broadfields United have recently undergone a managerial change and I wish David Fox well but only after today of course. We expect a tough game today and as seen in our first game with Broadfields they are a side that have good players and with a recent change as manager it is difficult to predict what kind of line up they may go with. I say to our players each week we always look to play to our strengths and not to try to second guess the opposition line up because at this level teams and players can change rapidly. We come into the game on a decent run of form with 11 league game unbeaten. Whilst we have been happy to go on a run myself and Kyle want and demand more of this group of players. We want to control games for longer spells and cut out some of the silly errors that make games less comfortable. The group is developing week by week and the work we can get into the players on the training ground consistently is starting to show. Our priority when we first arrived was to get off the foot of the table. We have achieved that, and I often get asked about points targets between now and the end of the season. There are 12 league games left with 36 points remaining, so my answer is simple, 36! We still have work
broadfields-print.indd 5
to do to ensure we are mathematically safe, and I never forget that. I want us to have the ambition that every game counts. There will be no allowances made for end of season beach mode. Players here are fully aware they are all playing to be a part of the ambitions for us over the next numbers of years. No players will be allowed to see out the remainder of the season with beach towels, sunglasses, and a sun lounger in mind. Our relentless pursuit to WIN doesn’t waver. The intensity of the training and the players attitudes to WIN whatever activity they are involved in continues to impress us. Last weekend’s 9v9 end of session small, sided game was played with the levels of intensity of a derby! I always feel it is right to train how you play. I like players with an edge that replicates myself and Kyle and the edge that we both have. Anyone who stands near the technical area or in a 50-yard radius I am sure understand what I mean about an edge from Kyle and me. Whilst today is another opportunity to play football and hopefully get 3 points, the day is all about Aaron Bateman and the legacy he leaves. Like so many of our supporters Aaron showed loyalty, commitment, and passion for Dunstable Town. We as players and Management will ensure we do all that we can to continue to show the same level of loyalty, commitment, and passion. Enjoy the game

L By the following year the club was running ten sides, eight of which were playing on a Saturday in the Southern Olympian League. By the conclusion of the 1994/95 season five of these teams had won their respective divisions, with another two finishing as runners up. The 1995/96 season was the first in which the club participated in the Middlesex County Football League and the season ended with silverware with the first team winning the Presidents Cup which was contested at Harrow Borough FC. The next season again saw cause for celebration as the first team won the Division One title by six points thus clinching promotion to the Premier Division for the first time. By the 2001/02 season the club was still running five teams, with the First and Reserves still contesting in the Middlesex County League, two sides in the Harrow Sunday Challenge and one in the Hillingdon & District Sunday Football League. This season also saw devastation for
the club due to the Broadfields fire in which our clubhouse burnt to the ground, leaving only the changing rooms and shower facilities still standing. The club did however continue to compete through these tough times.
M
The club steadily began to contract and by the 2003/04 season the club had only four teams playing competitively. The first team was still competing in the Middlesex Premier, under the leadership of Marvin Hall and assisted by Mike Jennings and Mick Croft. This season the club also ran a Vets side which played in the London Commercial League Division Seven and who managed to get through to the League Cup final. The club still had its two Sunday sides competing and it was the side under the guidance of Chris Webster which managed to win the Harrow Sunday Challenge League Cup.

The 2005/06 season saw Chris Webster’s side clinch a cup final win over Harrow Weald

United, in the Jack Walker Cup. The following season saw lift the Benevolent Shield trophy, edging out The Black Bull FC on penalties. The 2007/08 season was a barren season for the club, but there was consolation in achieving the runners up position in both the Sunday Premier Cup and Champions Cup, losing both finals to Belstone (Sunday’s). The 2008/09 season saw a return to success with Chris Webster’s side winning the Champions Cup and Jack Walker Cup, beating Headstone Manor and Ruislip Royals respectively and coming runners up in the Sunday Premier League.
win 8 of their final ten league games, with just one loss which came to eventual champions Hillingdon FC. The club secured promotion on the final day of the season in a nail-biting finale against Cricklewood Wanderers, a game in which the winners would gain promotion to the SSML’s Division One. An injury time Sam Horan winner, saw the club finally clinch promotion. The end of the season also saw the club say farewell to James Brophy, who became the first player from Broadfields United FC to move into the professional game, signing a contract with League One side Swindon Town FC.
The 2009/10 season saw a resurgence for the Saturday side after years in the doldrums with the team, led by Dene Gardner and assistant Gary Gray, finishing the season as runners up in the Middlesex Intermediate Cup to Park View in a final played at Northwood FC. The 2010/11 season was a disappointing one for the club with the only success being the Sunday side coming runners up in the Champions Cup, narrowly losing 2-1 to Headstone Manor.
The 2015/16 season was the clubs first season in SSML football and so the management sought out the assistance of former Northwood FC and North Greenford United FC manager Mark Barnham joined by Robbie Pearce who moved up to the position of First Team coach. The season started off slowly with us struggling to find our feet in the league, only picking up 11 points from our opening 10 league fixtures. The side also struggled in the cups that we entered, except for the League Cup, in which we reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Crawley Green. The side managed to turn their fortunes around in the league and finished a credible 11th place on 49 points. A good achievement considering the season was being used as a learning curve.
The club would wait until the 2011/12 season to secure their first Saturday silverware in over a decade, with new manager Ryan Duffy and assistant Chris Webster, leading the team to the Alec Smith Premier Cup trophy beating Southall 4-1 in the final which was contested at AFC Hayes. The following season, 2012/13, saw the same side successfully defend this trophy this time at Uxbridge FC and against British Airways, winning 2-1. The following season, 2013/14, saw the management duo of Webster and Pearce reverse the positions winning both the Senior Reserve Division, beating Kensington Dragons Reserves, and the Junior Open Cup, beating Greens United 5-2, a terrific feat for such a young side. This season also marked the First team’s debut in the FA Vase. The 2014/15 season was arguably the most important and successful for the club as it saw the first team, which continued to be led by Ryan Duffy and Chris Webster, finally win promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League Division One after years of blood, sweat and tears. A magnificent end to the season saw the side
The 2016/17 season will live long in the memory for the players and management of both our Saturday sides for all the right reasons. The First team, led by Mark Barnham, Ryan Duffy and Liam Bird, managed to clinch a memorable 4-1 victory over local rivals Hillingdon Borough to clinch the Middlesex Premier Cup for the first time in the final played at Northwood FC. A double by MOM Connor Spinks, Rex Kimona and Dene Gardner sealed the result. The side also managed to reach the second-round proper of the FA Vase for the first time before being cruelly knocked out, 2-1, in the last minutes of the game away at Newport Pagnell. Building on the success of the previous season, the 2017/18 will go down as the greatest in the club’s history to date. A cup double for the first team was topped off by confirmation that
8 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Broadfields United broadfields-print.indd 8
24/02/2022 14:18:51
they had secured FA Cup qualification for the first time in their history. Despite a slow start to the campaign the side managed to position themselves in a respectable league position midway through the season. Come the end of the season and, in a month where they played 12 matches, they managed to clinch 4th place in the league, their highest league finish to date. During this period, they contested two cup finals. First up landlords Harefield United in the Middlesex Premier Cup at Harrow Borough. It was tight contest which saw the club narrowly run out 1-0 winners. Next up and just four days later they were competing in another final, this time up against fellow SSML Division One side Risborough Rangers, facing off for the Spartan League Challenge Trophy at Colney Heath. This was a great achievement for both clubs as it was the first time the final had been contested by two teams both sitting outside the Premier Division for over twenty years. Just when they expected the game to be played out much like the final a few days previous, the boys obviously hadn’t read the script, racing ahead to a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes, Connor Spinks and Sam O’Neill with the goals. Although the game had settled down, Broadfields missed some big chances and failed to put the game to bed before halftime. The second half saw a more attack minded Risborough find an opening and the game looked in the balance with Risborough gaining momentum and possession. All these nerves were quickly put to bed when Dene Gardner pounced on a misjudged ball by the keeper for one of the easiest chances, he has ever had restoring the two-goal cushion and seeing out the game 3-1. The end of the season also saw two departures of the management team, Mark Barnham who has taken a step back and now involved behind the scenes and physio Steve Hoare. The end of the 2018/19 season saw the first team achieve their main aim as promotion was secured. A tally of 94 points saw them finish behind runaway leaders, Harefield United, but guaranteed a place as one of the top 9 teams from the 19 leagues at Step 6 and thus
achieving promotion to Step 5 for the very first time. It was a long season which saw the club play in their first ever FA Cup game, beating Banstead Athletic 3-0 in a memorable Extra Preliminary round tie. Unfortunately, in the next round they went down 4-1 to AFC Uckfield Town but nonetheless it was a great experience for the club to appear in the oldest cup competition in the world. The 2019/20 season started full of optimism for what was to lie ahead for the club after sealing promotion to Step 5. After getting off to a flying start by defeating newly demoted side Dunstable Town 3-0 away from home the bubble they were riding was quickly burst and some disappointing results followed including a devastating loss in the FA Cup away to Southern Counties East side Bridon Ropes in the opening round. They began to find our feet in the league and got into a good spell of form which included an impressive 5-1 victory over high profile Combined Counties side, Hanworth Villa in the FA Vase. Some more inconsistent results followed this spell before they found themselves towards the bottom end of the table, although not in any real danger of a relegation scrap. Post-Christmas and the club recorded arguably the biggest scalp in its history, defeating Conference South side, Hampton & Richmond in the Middlesex Senior Cup 2-1. Unfortunately, they exited the cup in the following round away at Bedfont Sports in what was the Semi Final stage. Sadly, this was the season global pandemic COVID-19 struck and thus was ended prematurely. The 2020-21 season began with a great 3-0 win at their new home, Tithe Farm Sports & Social Club, against Sussex based Loxwood in the early stage of the FA Cup. This was to be the high point of the season as they exited in the next round away at Sutton Common Rovers. In the league they only managed to play 11 fixtures with a mixed bag of results before the season was curtailed due to the pandemic.

The Dunstable Town family was devastated and heartbroken to hear the sad news that Aaron Bateman had passed away. Aaron was a much-loved supporter and volunteer at the club, who followed the team home and away and always managed a smile, win, lose or draw. The club’s thoughts are with his dad, Ian, his sister, Charlotte and his family and friends at this sad time. In due course we will be organising a memorial game, but today we will mark his passing with a minute’s applause before the kick off.

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE!

thank you aaron I didn’t know how to start this but here we go. The youth section would like to send their love and condolences to Ian, Charlotte, and the family of Aaron Bateman. I first met Aaron when I attended a game against Chesham, the Regiment were there and greeted us. Aaron sold me a programme, scarf, and hat for a 5-year-old George and ever since that day, George was hooked, so thank you Aaron. As time went by Freddie got hooked and they both stood behind the goal at times with Aaron and the guys, sang songs, made up jokes and were generally made to feel special so without knowing Aaron, you made a big Impact on their Dunstable Town journey. Last weekend we held a minute’s silence for the games that were played and as pictured above our under 7s lead by manager John Sanders paid their respects. The rest of the youth section will pay their respects today and tomorrow. RIP Aaron

on this day
in footbal history..
26 February 1881 - For Wales, It Was Worth The Wait On 26 February 1881, Wales got their first victory, a one-goal win over England in their eighth match. Founded five years earlier, the Welsh team had lost their first seven matches, scoring only four goals total while conceding twenty-eight. Their worst loss was a 9-0 defeat to Scotland in 1878. They had played England only twice, losing 1-2 in 1879 and 2-3 in 1880, both times in Wales. They changed the venue for the next match, meeting England before a crowd of 4,200 at the Alexandria Meadows in Blackburn. At the time, all but three of the Welsh players were with Welsh clubs, with the other three based in England. The hero of the day was John Vaughn, from Welsh club Ruabon Druids, who scored the day’s only goal in the 34th minute. Wales did not have to wait long for their next win, beating Ireland 7-1 two games later. Vaughan, meanwhile, went on to earn a total of eleven caps, but scored only one more goal.

A lovely large, thatched house formed from three old cottages dating back to 1805 when it opened as a pub. If you are traveling via the village of Ickleford, we would recommend a stop at the Old George, a 17th century country pub in the centre of the village. A tunnel runs from the pub to St Katharine’s church nearby. There is a lounge bar with an inglenook fireplace and lots of beams and it also stocks Greene King ales.
