FROM the boardroom Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park this afternoon. We welcome Bromsgrove Sporting , a super club who could not have been more hospitable in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. It is not difficult to see why they are doing well, but we are more than confident that we will provide strong opposition this afternoon. They say that a week is a long time in politics, and it has certainly been a monumental few days in our country. Similarly, here at the club this week ,we have faced some challenging times. You will all no doubt be aware of Tony’s resignation on Sunday. This was a shock to us all and his reasons are in the public domain. However, we have been in lengthy discussions in order to find a way forward that is best for both Tony and the club. Tony will be take time off to take care of personal matters, including his health , and we will review that situation on an ongoing basis. He knows that we are 100% behind him at this time, and thank him for his tireless work with us so far. In the interim,1st Team Coach Gareth Jackson will assume the position of Team Manager, supported by senior coaching/ playing staff within the club. We thank Gareth for his professionalism and flexibility, and I know you will support him, the staff, and the players during this period of change and uncertainty. Also to let you know that our goalkeeper Nathan Harness has secured a 7 week Trial at West Ham United. We wish Nathan

every success. He is an excellent prospect and we are very pleased that he has the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities. Nathan will be unavailable to us during this period. Matters off the pitch continue to be encouraging. As part of the Weatherfield Academy and Dunstable Town education partnership, the club has facilitated an innovative project between the school and Dunstable Post Office in Queensway. The Year 9 pupils were given insight into money , savings, and how a postal system works. We’ve just received great news that we have now been selected by Beds FA and the FA to be a SSE Wildcats Centre to develop girls football and get more girls involved in playing football . Both the above initiatives are as a result of the great work that Alex Alexandrou continues to head up for us. Another plug for our Quiz Night on February 2nd at 7pm. We already have number of teams, but we have more than enough space to accommodate some more. Remember a maximum of 6 players per team, entrance is £6 per person and includes a buffet. Please contact me for details. Finally, and as always, let’s really get behind Gareth and the team today. Your support makes all the difference.

Enjoy the m atch Neil

bROMSGROve SPORtiNG hiStORy Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club was formed in 2009 by a group of former Bromsgrove Rovers directors and supporters when the latter was in serious financial difficulty and facing closure. That would have meant the town having no football club playing at a serious nonleague level. The Club has an unusual constitution with a rule that nobody can own more than 10% of the Club to ensure that nobody ever gains overall personal control. In addition, the Bromsgrove Sporting Supporters Trust has a stake in the Club and appoints three directors. With Rovers’ difficulties deepening, Sporting were offered the tenancy of the town’s Victoria Ground by the District Council but had to play all home matches at the Beehive, home of Studley FC, as the pitch at the Victoria Ground had been left in an unplayable condition. Their first ever match (a pre-season friendly) was away to Stratford Town in July 2010 then a month later the season started in the Midland Combination Division Two away to Young Warriors in Coventry. After a lot of work and expenditure, Sporting were able to play their first match in Bromsgrove on 6th November in front of a crowd of 458 and ran up an impressive and unforgettable 7-0 win against Greenhill. Up to that point Myles Day had been the manager but he resigned due to family and work commitments and was replaced

by former Rovers legend Stewart Brighton. Sporting missed out on the two promotion places but a reorganisation of the Midland Combination saw them move into Division One for season 2011/12. Not long after the start, Brighton stood down owing to work commitments and was replaced by Keith Draper as manager with Ron Mellor as his assistant. They finished 3rd in the division and got to their first cup final losing the Evesham Hospital Junior Cup to Littleton on penalties. Although missing out on automatic promotion, Sporting were promoted to the Midland Combination Premier Division when the League increased the number of teams at the top level. For season 2012/13, Graham Scott was appointed joint manager to share duties with Keith Draper but Draper stepped down at the end of March leaving Graham Scott assisted by Ron Mellor in charge to the end of the season eventually finishing 6th. Sporting also claimed their first pieces of silverware with the Reserves winning the Midland Combination Reserve Division Two and the Under 18’s claiming County success in the Worcestershire F. A. Youth Cup Season 2013/14 saw Adrian Mander as joint manager with Graham Scott assisted

bROMSGROve SPORtiNG hiStORy by coaches Les Palmer, Duane Darby and Matt Lowe, former Rovers stalwarts. Scott stepped down in October 2013, leaving Mander in charge of the first team. Sporting ended the season 2nd to Brocton and also gained their first cup success in winning the Smedley Crooke Memorial Challenge Cup by beating Paget Rangers. Season 2013/14 also saw Sporting enter the FA Vase for the first time, but bowed out to Westfields after wins against Lye Town and Stafford Town. After 2 games of the 2014/15 season Adrian Mander resigned as manager and Paul Smith was appointed his successor with Martin Sockett and Nick Smith as his coaches. Smith guided “The Rouslers” to runners-up in the league for the second season. They also lifted the League Cup beating Southam United 3-2 in the final. Sporting also competed in the FA Cup for the first time but bowed out to Coleshill Town after a replay. In the FA Vase Sporting progressed to the 3rd. Round before losing to Thurnby Nirvana. 2015/16 saw “The Rouslers” as the bridesmaids again, finishing second in the Midland Football League Division One to Coventry United, despite gaining a club record 91 points. In both the Worcestershire Senior Urn and the Smedley Crooke Memorial Challenge Cup, Sporting were losing finalists. Season 2016/17 was Sporting’s most

successful to date winning the league with 104 points (19 ahead of their nearest rivals Hinckley AFC) and remaining undefeated for the whole campaign. In addition, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase before losing narrowly 2-1 on aggregate to Cleethorpes Town. They were also awarded the Worcestershire Senior Urn for the first time despite losing the final on penalties to Highgate United who were subsequently disqualified. The season also saw a vast increase in the support for Sporting with several crowds of over 1000 including a record 3349 for the home match against Cleethorpes. Paul Smith, who guided the Rouslers to the Premier Division, stepped down as Manager in February 2018, which saw Assistant Manager Brendan Kelly take over as First Team Manager, while Andy Mason became his Assistant Manager. Kelly and Mason brought in a very experienced first team coach, Kevin Barry, who is currently the manager of the RAF Senior Representative Football Team. Despite the managerial changes the club won the Midland Football League Premier Division title losing just 6 of their 42 league fixtures and scoring 110 goals in the process and earning a place in the Southern League Division One Central.

bROMSGROve SPORtiNG PLayeR PROFiLeS Richard Gregory - Joined last October had has not stopped scoring for the Rouslers a cult hero amongst the Sporting faithful, a deadly striker who has had spells at Leamington, Stratford and Stafford. Liam Spink - Liam is in his 3rd season now having had previous spells with Redditch Utd and Rushall Olympic- a box to box all round complete midfielder - who chips in with his fair share of goals. John Pykett - John is enjoying his second spell at the club having been playing down under in the Australian leagues - John is a pacy winger full of tricks and can also chip in with some goals. Charlie Dowd - He progressed from our very own U18 under the guidance of our very own Alan Horton who snapped Charlie up from Burton Albion - hugely talented lad who is comfortable anywhere on the pitch William Shorrock - Will signed in the close season of 2018/19 season from Walsall Fc where he was involved in the first team squad on 16 occasions last season - great feet who again can play in many positions and also has an eye for goal. Nathan Hayward - Player of the year last year for Worcester City - Nathan signed in the close season - a tenacious hardworking midfielder with lots of energy. Marcel Simpson - Brings a wealth of experience and calmness to the squad, he joined toward the end of the title winning season off 2017/18. Jono Brown - Second spell at the club for Jono who enjoyed a successful loan spell

when he joined us from Kidderminster two seasons ago – Jono re-joins us this season having been on loan at Sutton Coldfield for half of last season. A young but very experienced keeper who is extremely vocal and has very good distribution. R’Mar Murray - R’Mar can operate on either wing and played a huge part in the title winning team when Bren Kelly signed him not long after he became manager, again another crowd pleaser full of tricks. Aaron Roberts - Mr Bromsgrove, the clubs all-time record appearance maker who has been on the books since he was 15 – he has progressed from youth level and has been pretty much an ever present since – He has deployed himself all across the back and sometimes did a job in midfield , quick , strong , tenacious a real cult hero amongst the fans and always gives 100%. Josh Quaynor - Josh starts his second full season at the VG having joined from Coleshill Town last summer - Josh was signed as a left back but was redesigned by Bren Kelly as a centre midfielder who finished second place in the fans player of the year last year after a fantastic season. Danny Morris - The clubs’ managers player of the year for the last two seasons – Mozza did leave The Victoria ground for a short spell to Lichfield City but returned and has never looked back, his performances would stand out in leagues way above where we are right now, quick,

bROMSGROve SPORtiNG PLayeR PROFiLeS brave and cultured with a very cool head. Tom Rankin - Tom joins from Loughborough Uni after previous spells with Leamington and in the United States - a local lad who can play many positions. Jack Wilson - Jack has been at the club a few years now and is a quick pacey left back and probably one of the strongest full backs you’ll come across – he had previous spells at Lichfield but has really found home at the Victoria ground and after finishing last season really well he has had a great preseason and looks ready to kick on again.

Cowley. Tenacity, hunger and desire with a rifle of a right foot. Tom Taylor A no nonsense centre half who joins us after plying his trade in the Welsh Premier League for many years. Tom is a commanding centre back who is calm and composed with the ball at his feet. Louis Hall - A young bright left sided player formerly of the Aston Villa academy and Stourbridge before joining the Rouslers in October 2018

Craig Jones - Craig has captained the side in the last 2 full seasons – leading the squad to 2 consecutive promotions and a domestic cup competition – An old-fashioned centre half who refuses to lie down, a true leader and another Bromsgrove stalwart who has notched up 5 seasons of service for the club putting in some memorable performances.

Jake Heath - A tenacious midfielder who joined us from Barwell in October 2018.

Jason Cowley - The clubs all-time leading goal scorer, the tenacious front man has been with the squad throughout two successive promotions, including the 2016/17 invincible season.

Michael McGrath - A very experienced centre-midfielder who was a part of uprising of phoenix club, Hereford F.C. McGrath is a versatile player and has already proved he can play at the back when required.

Ashanti Pryce - A bright young talent formerly of AFC Mansfield and Solihull Moors Academy, joining us this season Ash likes to run in behind defenders leaving them for dead. Cameron Peters - Talent and composure beyond his years, Cameron who is on loan from Walsall, is nightmare for defenders who is very similar to fellow frontman Jason

Christ Mayuba - A loanee from Birmingham City F.C, he has bags of talent and daunting turn of pace. Kieren Westwood - Signed from Stratford Town in January 2019, Kieren is an experienced left-sided player at Step 3.

RePORtiNG iN

dUNStabLe tOWN 0-1 SUttON COLdFieLd tOWN It was Sutton Coldfield though who looked the most lively in the early stages of the game, as Dunstable appeared to struggle to get to grips with their opponents movement, on and off the ball. A slow start took a turn for the worse when the visitors went ahead on the quarter hour mark with a goal from Mitch Piggon, borne from a long throw in on the left. Dunstable looked to ignite a spark but found themselves thwarted and frustrated as the Sutton Coldfield midfield tightened their grip and starved the Dunstable forwards of the supply they needed. Sutton Coldfield boast a mean defence. 25 goals conceded in the League, makes them the 3rd best defensive team, and also the 3rd highest ranked team on their travels, and with recent wins against highly fancied Bedford Town and away at Thame Town, and an FA Cup draw against Alfreton Town this is a Club that can clearly hold it’s own. Dunstable appeared for the second half kicking towards the car park end, and if ever there was a game of two halves….this might not actually have been it, but Dunstable in the second half looked a totally different proposition. Passes found their man, shots found their target, and the players, individually and collectively found their form. Suddenly Mr Gwilliams in the Sutton Coldfield goal found he had work to do. James Lauder from distance in the first few minutes of the second half brought out a good save from the keeper closely followed by Alex Taylor, whose shot had real power behind it, but unfortunately went straight down Gwilliams throat. Next up to have a pop at goal were Gedeon

Okito and Hassan Sheikh who both were determined to do justice to a fine mazy run by Marcus Gouldbourne but with Gedeon’s shot blocked, and Hassan’s sneaking wide, Dunstable could count themselves unlucky not to be on level terms. On the hour mark, Saul Williams replaced Erin Amu, and minutes later sibling, Arel got power behind a header which was well taken by Gwilliams. At the other end, Dunstable were indebted to a piece of brave goalkeeping from George Paulin who one on one with a Sutton Coldfield player advancing at speed, stood tall, narrowed the angle and made an important stop. Minutes later George was at it again to again deny the away side. For the last 10 minutes Chris Wreh came on to replace Hassan Sheikh and using his muscular frame made a couple of half chances but never quite found the purchase to his shot. In the last 5 minutes Saul Williams got to the bye line whipped in a delightful ball that struck an advancing defender who could only watch with relief as the ball bounced the right side of the post. Had he been six inches further away, that deflection goes in, and Town would have had a deserved equaliser. Four minutes of stoppage time brought proceedings to an end and despite a strong second half Sutton Coldfield had just about enough about them to keep Dunstable out and take the points north to the West Midlands.

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

19 January 2010 - The Margin For Error Was Apparently Very, Very Small On 19 January 2010, Olympiacos sacked Brazilian legend Zico only eight months into his two-year contract as manager. After starring as a playmaker for Flamengo and Brazil in the 1970s and ‘80s, Zico moved into management with Kashima Antlers in 1999. But he established his credentials as the manager of Japan from 2002 to 2006, winning the 2004 Asian Cup and guiding them through an impressive qualification campaign for the 2006 World Cup. He stepped down after a poor showing at the tournament itself, however. Then came a brief but successful spell at Fenerbahçe from 2006 to 2008, followed by even shorter stints at Bunyadkor (2008) and CSKA Moscow (2009) before he moved to Olymipacos in September 2009. At the time, only two games into the season, the team was

in fourth place. Under Zico, they rose to the top of the table by the end of September and mostly remained there for the rest of the year on the strength of an undefeated run that saw them win eight of Zico’s first ten games. But a loss in his eleventh, away to Aris Salonika, followed by another at home to AEK Athens, proved too much for club president Socrates Kokkalis. Even though Olympiacos got a win and a draw in their next two games, he moved to terminate Zico’s contract. Olympiacos went on to finish the season in second place, while Zico took some time off before managing Iraq from 2011 to 2012.

clubs opting to reduce their fixture congestion by taking up the league’s offer to not play on Boxing Day. Ultimately, this decision is perfectly understandable, even if it may have disappointed a few fans.

While we all adore the festive football schedule, we must remember that it puts an immense strain on both players and volunteers at clubs, who often have to forgo the Christmas celebrations that we take for granted in order to ensure that matches are fulfilled. The Published by Ltd Football Paper
