FROM THE BOARDROOM A very warm welcome to Creasey Park this afternoon. It’s FA Cup day and we welcome our visitors Chipping Sodbury from the Western League. Similarly to us they have one win and one loss from their opening fixtures. So, its set fair for a really competitive contest, which we hope will go our way. For clubs such as our own, a run in the FA Cup is a welcome distraction. The publicity and the potential prize money gives everyone a lift, and we all want to dream of some giant killing with our name on it. So, your support this afternoon is every bit as vital as a good ‘on the field’ performance. Tuesday night’s victory over Baldock Town was an excellent way to respond to the disappointing loss on opening day against an organised Broadfields United team. A couple of neutral observers, who attended the game, were impressed with the style of football that we displayed. The nervous few minutes near the end of the game were natural for our emerging team, but there was no doubt that we were deserved victors. There have certainly been some interesting early results in the South Midlands League and much of the talk is of a really competitive and open campaign. Early doors for sure but we have to hope that we will be in the mix. I wanted to highlight a couple of things. We are fully behind the league’s Respect campaign, and you will have noticed the posters displayed on match days

encouraging us to consider what is appropriate language to use. We are building a community club and are seeing more and more family groups attending. I don’t need to over emphasise how important it is that they consider it a healthy environment to bring their children into. Secondly, this year, we are offering Player Sponsorship at just £50 per season per player. This will include both our 1st Team and Development Team. It would be great if we could cover every player and management team member in the next few weeks. Please chat to me or any of the committee about getting involved in this scheme. It really does give a lift to each individual player to know that they are sponsored. Also, we still have some great deals on Season Tickets and Match Sponsorship, so don’t hesitate to ask. We’d love you to sign up to these. Watch out also for confirmation of dates for a Race Night in September and a Quiz Night in November. Both events were really popular last season and we will continue to strive to put on quality evenings for our supporters, sponsors, and friends. So, again, welcome and let’s really get behind Gareth, Ryan and the boys. A cup run would be a real added bonus this season.

ame Enjoy the g Neil

GAFFER’S NOTES Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Creasey Park for the start of this new journey in the FA Cup. I wish to offer a special greeting to Scott Gibson, his staff, players and supporters of Chipping Sodbury Town. I hope you all have a pleasant visit to Dunstable and a safe journey home. It doesn’t seem like yesterday that I was at Wembley for last season’s FA cup final back in May, a spectacular occasion where I witnessed some of the best football I have ever watched live, as well as support that any team would be proud of. Even at 6-0 down the Watford fans had their flags waving proudly. Last season’s cup run fell short, following a first prelim round replay to Corby. This was after a thrilling match up away a few days previously. We found ourselves 3-0 up at half time, only to see our lead dwindle as we were reduced to 9 men, with the game ending 3-3. So it has been a whole year before we can go again and have the opportunity to start a good cup run, which is the dream for every non-league club. Tuesday night saw us pick up our first 3 points of this year’s league campaign. For me this match was a lot more than just the result. Following all the hard work that the lads have put into their pre-season preparations in the 7 weeks, Saturday’s result at home to Broadfields United felt like a blow that I could sense throughout the squad. However after all the lads

dusted themselves down, reviewed and recognised what happened, they were ready to react and put it right against Baldock Town. Ryan and I were therefore delighted at the reaction from Saturday’s disappointment, especially with respect to the desire and togetherness they showed to a man on and off the pitch. This is something we will use as a cornerstone for the season to keep building from. As mentioned in my notes in a previous program we have a relatively new squad for this season, with only a handful of players remaining from the last campaign. We also have very healthy and strong competition for team shirts on a match day. Ryan and I feel that this competition and squad rotation is important with so many matches being played throughout the season and it is a good selection problem to have as a management team. We also know that there is some terrific fresh and hungry talent being excellently coached and developed by Colin and Val in the development team. This is exciting times for Dunstable Town and I’m sure you’ll agree that a good cup run, starting today will very welcome for us all. So please keep giving your support loudly and proudly.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY Chipping Sodbury Football Club was founded in approximately 1885. The oldest printed record of the club can be found in an old G.F.A. handbook, a little way down the page from local teams such as Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town. Originally playing in Red and White, the club began playing in the Western League at a semi-pro level until they disbanded in 1954. A few years later a police officer named Cliff Phelps started a local junior side; this team entered the Dursley & Wotton league in 1958. As they team grew up they entered the Bristol & District league—division three, subsequently they were relegated to division 5. The early 90’s saw the new clubhouse and changing rooms built by the committee, with players contributing their trades. The first team climbed the league’s to eventually get elected to the Bristol Premier Combination Division 1 in 1991. Unfortunately, in 1992 tragedy struck the club when 21 year old defender, Jonathan Eacott was tragically killed in an accident. In 1993 the club won the Premier Cup against Highridge United in a penalty shootout, which was an emotional day due to the tragedy of the previous year. In 1999 the first team gained promotion to the Premier Division under Andy Mathias and Martin Truman but were relegated back to Division one in 2001/02 season. Season 2002/03 saw Les Underdown and Jeff Clark take over the reins, both were ex-

players, and in their first season they managed to finish in mid-table making huge contributions both on and off the pitch as well. In season 2005/06, Jeff Clark managed the first team by himself, and the team overcame the disappointment of the previous season by winning the Premier Division 1 by 15 points and the third team gained promotion for the second successive season. More success followed in the 2006/07 season with the Reserves gaining promotion on the last day by finishing runners up. The third team finished in a creditable fourth spot and gained a third successive promotion to Division 3. The season ended on a sad note with the loss of club stalwart John Beer. John gave over 30 years’ service to the club, as a player, manager and Chairman and was a key figure in the building of the clubhouse you see today. He will always be remembered, as the Clubs Clubman of the year award is now named in his honour. Season 2007/08 was the most successful in the 123 year history of the Club with the first winning the Premier Combination and gaining entry into the Surridge Gloucestershire County League for the first time. Early in the 2009/2010 season Mark Stenner took over, his leadership soon had

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY the team playing at the top of their game, and the results were evident. After a poor start, and a very wet and soggy season they finished a very creditable eighth position. Season 2010/2011 was the best in the County League yet, with Sodbury produced some scintillating football and proving to be a team that was very hard to beat, with a never give up attitude. At, or near the top of the table all season they finished in third place, a position that showed their approach to the game and commitment throughout the year.

and that’s written in history. Karl Reese deservedly won the award for the Western League Manager of the Season.

Season 2013-2014 improved again by finishing 9th position and Scott Gibson then Handed the seat to Karl Reese who then took the club, during the 2014/15 season into 4th in the County League Finishing fourth was a massive achievement and the club learned that, providing the necessary improvements to the ground were made the club would be promoted into Division 1 of the Toolstation Western League. work started almost immediately and the Club kicked off the 2015/16 season in early August in the Western League.

During the close season Karl stood down for personal reasons and the club would like to express its thanks to him for the work he put in and the success he brought to the Club. At the same time Gary Powell, his assistant decided to leave for Paulton Rovers, taking half of the team with him. The search for a new manager began and in late June 2017 Neil Simons was appointed and informed that he had to replace the nucleus of the previous seasons team.

The fairy-tale continued and by the last Saturday of the season the team managed by Karl were in second place and playing away at Calne Town needing to win by at 5 goals to have any chance of overhauling leaders Wells City’s goal difference, they also needed them to lose. The Sods won 6 1 and Wells City lost, they were Champions

Promotion into the Premier Division was a big step for the club as many clubs in the division have big budgets as they strive for Southern League football. It was a difficult season and the man aim was to consolidate our position and stay in the division. This they managed but not without some scary moments.

This Neil did and with his new management team of Aaron Day and Kerry Georgiou led the team to finish a creditable 13th. There were notable successes, victories against Melksham Town, Bradford Town and Willand Rovers and several low points with defeats against Hallen (2) and Hengrove Ath (2). They now look forward to the coming season and hopefully another improvement.

REPORTING IN

OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST BALDOCK TOWN Dunstable Town claimed their first three points of the season with an impressive brace from Luke Little, and a resolute performance to keep Baldock Town at bay. The early stages saw Rio Da Silva particularly instrumental in the centre of the park, showing Dunstable’s attacking intent and creating a number of dangerous moments for the Baldock defence. It wasn’t until the fifteenth minute that the breakthrough was made, a free header from a corner well saved by Baldock keeper Adam Harper, but he could only palm it into the path of a waiting Little, who gratefully accepted the chance to score his first goal for the Blues. Little nearly had a second seven minutes later, when a sweeping, fast-paced attack saw him with a chance to shoot from just outside the area, and ultimately the shot was not far wide of the goal. Dunstable Town were very much in control of the game, with Baldock mostly resorting to shots from distance when they did venture into the attacking third. One exception saw a penalty appeal when Marius Patru went to ground as the attacker cut inside, but the referee was resolute; no penalty. It wasn’t long before Dunstable doubled their lead, with Da Silva again involved, playing a through-ball to Dalitso Chibwe, who saw his shot blocked. However, Chris Stapleton was on hand to spread the ball wide to the incoming Luke Little, who shot accurately into the bottom corner of the goal. Dunstable started the second half in the same spirit as they had played the first, but the first

notable chance of the half came with twenty-five minutes left to play, with Stapleton meeting a free kick to the back post, but he was only able to put it narrowly wide. Stapleton’s desire to get on the scoresheet was there for all to see, and it was only six minutes later when he displayed the great athleticism we are growing used to seeing from him, producing a spectacular overhead effort. The fact that it was easily saved is neither here nor there, as the unwillingness to let any opportunity escape untaken will no doubt see him a popular figure at Creasey Park. With thirteen minutes left on the clock Baldock Town’s Alex O’Brien made sure of a nervy finish to the game, placing a free kick from twenty yards into the top corner beyond Mackenzie Taylor’s reach. Baldock went in search of an equaliser, and again O’Brien was the focus of the attack, and with three minutes to play he drove the ball across the face of the goal, but to his frustration, nobody was arriving to turn it in. Evans Lamboh, Jack Harvey and Davide Pobbe all came on in the closing stages, and their energy boost, along with the work rate of all in blue, saw Dunstable Town see out a well-deserved win.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE

Our youth teams have been busy playing in tournaments and friendlys through out the close season and Pre-Season, Here are some pictures of some of our teams out and about. Well done.

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

10 AUGUST 1974 - THE UNCHARITABLE SHIELD On 10 August 1974, Liverpool defeated Leeds United on penalties to claim the FA Charity Shield before a crowd of 67,000 at Wembley Stadium. It was the first Charity Shield match to be shown live on television and it was one that most spectators would not forget. The day was significant for both managers, as it was Bill Shankly’s last match in charge of Liverpool and Brian Clough’s first in charge of Leeds United. Early in the match, Leeds midfielder Johhny Giles earned a quick booking for lashing out at a Liverpool player. The situation grew worse as Leeds midfielder and captain Billy Bremner repeatedly knocked into Liverpool forward Kevin Keegan. Keegan grew increasingly frustrated, both with Bremner and with the referee for allowing Bremner’s behavior to continue. The situation escalated to the point

where a scuffle broke out between Keegan and Bremner and both were ejected. On their way off the pitch, both players insulted their teams and supporters by stripping off their shirts and throwing them to the ground. Although both players were ejected, Clough was certain his own player was to blame and was quoted afterward as saying “Billy Bremner’s behaviour was scandalous, producing one of the most notorious incidents in Wembley history. It was as if the players were offering grounds for all my criticism that they had resented so much.” The FA fined Keegan and Bremner £500 each. Keegan was also suspended for three matches, while Bremner was suspended for eight. By the time Bremner’s suspension ended, Clough had been sacked after 44 days in charge.

ANSWERING QUESTIONS FROM STEVE LEWINGTON IS ASSISTANT MANAGER RYAN STURGES Easy one to start. What is your nickname?

Nike or Adidas?

Clubs played for? (Adult Football)

Favourite TV show?

Hemel Hempstead Town and Tring Athletic

Game of Thrones Favourite restaurant and what would you order?

Big Easy, Surf & Turf with Jumbo Shrimps, Lobster & Steak and a session IPA Best Footballer of your generation? How did teaming up with Gareth come about?

I have to admit ... I think he made a mistake and got the wrong Ryan ... I jest, we stayed in contact ever since we first met when he was a coach at Tring. It turned out, eventually, that he was to be manager of Dunstable Town and I was in the early stages of my journey into the world of football management - fresh from my playing days and Gareth was looking for an assistant. He made contact and it was clear we still shared the same values and ideas in football and the rest is history. Team you supported as a kid?

Newcastle United

Zinedine Zidane First youth team you played for?

Woodhall Wanderers What would the walk out music be if you could choose it?

I’m torn between R Kelly’s “She’s got that Vibe” and Motorhead’s “The Game” ... I’m joking ... (maybe) ... I would quite like “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons ... that’s pretty cool
