FROM the boardroom It is three years since we began our Community and Education initiative and it has grown from strength to strength. This is epitomised by the Friendly Football tournaments that the club has been running since 2017. This morning, Weatherfield Academy hosted the fourth such tournament. The tournament is held twice per season, once in the Autumn term and then again in the Spring term. The aim is to get a group of local schools together to put out teams of boys and girls in Years 3 and 4, who do not play for either their school team or an organised club team. This morning’s tournament included teams from Weatherfield Academy, Totternhoe Academy and Kensworth Academy, which we are proud to announce is our 2018-19 Community School of the Season. The children play for fun and enjoyment and are presented with a participation medal at the end of the tournament. Following the tournament, the children and their families are club guests for today’s match against Corby. They will be treated to lunch in the clubhouse and the children will be the matchday mascots. Please give the mascots a big cheer when they lead the teams on to the pitch. The tournaments are but just one aspect of our Community and Education activities. Gedeon Okito has run training sessions at both Totternhoe and Weatherfield and will do so again this season along with sessions at Kensworth. Club officials and

team mangers have made presentations in schools in relation to the history of the club and motivating students. We have funded and run Match Attax Swap Clubs at Dunstable Library as well as at Totternhoe and Weatherfield. Dunstable Librarians have created a half-day workshop on the history of the town and the football club for local school children. We have set up two Young Adult Ability Counts teams and one Ability Counts Girls team in conjunction with Weatherfield, Central Bedfordshire College and Beds FA, with financial grant support from the Football Foundation. The club offers matchday work experience opportunities to Weatherfield students and many of you will have come to know Bradley Field, the first student from the school to take up this opportunity. Bradley has become part of the fabric of the club and matchdays are not the same without him. He has recently been joined by Jonathan Keenan who has made an immediate impression. We look forward to Jonathan developing his skills and enjoying his experience. This is just a taste of things to come and we are determined that this initiative embeds the club at the very heart of the community.

Enjoy the m atch Alex Alexan drou

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and welcome back to Creasey Park all including everyone associated with Corby Town ... again. We are in a good run of form from a performance perspective, despite the narrow defeat to Bromsgrove. The important cup win against Northwood was great for us, mainly to keep a clean sheet and show some maturity in our play. It proved the lads are learning and learning fast. We were not able to quite get our usual football flowing and tactically we needed some sorting out at half time, which the lads understood and they resolved. That led to a very machine like, professional performance in the second half. On the player front, Kieran Ogden could be out for around 3-6 weeks with a medial strain which we will assess later. John Sonuga is having ongoing issues with work and Nathan Mullings is nearing a return from a thigh problem. Nathan Harness had a confirmed hip muscle tear and is close, and Alex Taylor’s groin problem looks less serious than we thought and will feature today. Fred Burbidge has now returned permanently to Borehamwood and we wish him the very best and hope he has benefited from his positive experience with us. To round off my notes I want to share the positivity I am receiving from various outside organisations and people. This is largely

due to the type of football we can play and ethos of the club. Further education want to talk to us about partnerships, that allow progress for elite players they have and see us as the outlet. Key people in football are paying attention to our squad. Clubs are taking notice and the phone is ringing. Journalists are ringing and want to know about our ethos and structure. All this shows that the culture and philosophy of the club will work as a sustainable future in the long term. I think it will prove to be an example to other clubs and show that if you are realistic, define success, show patience and pull in the same direction, then you can have a football club that produces an attractive product for people to watch and produce players for clubs in professional football. We are someway into this wholesale change on and off the pitch, but we are a long way off completion. In the meantime, we must keep progressing, win, lose or draw. We will be fighting for a win today though!

CORbY tOWN hIStORY Corby Town Football Club were formed in 1948 and are the second club to represent the town, following Stewarts & Lloyds Corby, who were formed 13 years earlier in 1935. The club’s nickname ‘The Steelmen’ derives from the old steelworks that were in Corby. The first chairman of the club was local MP William Montgomery, whilst Reg Smith was named the first manager. Smith had previously played for Millwall and Dundee whilst representing England at international level. Things started well for the newly formed Steelmen, winning their first game 5-1 against Wellingborough Town on 21 August 1948 at occupation Road, which was home to Corby Town until the move to the Rockingham Triangle in 1985. It took the club only three years to win their first title, wrapping up the United Counties League in 1951 before doing the same again only a year later, with Ernie Middlemiss scoring a club record 135 goals in 136 games, a record that was to stand for 40 years. 1958 saw the introduction of floodlit football in Corby and in the same year the club moved from the Midland League to the Southern League.

of the Premier as they achieved a league and cup double the following season. The mid-90s saw a cash crisis at the club which threatened to put the club out of business, and although they were spared, relegation was to follow. The turn of the millennium brought about more positivity at the Triangle as they consolidated their mid-table position in the Dr Martens league. More was to follow in 2005 as they just missed out on a play-off place under manager Rob Dunion. Dunion’s side went one better in 2006 as they were promoted once more. Corby Town saw a change of ownership in 2007 as a new board made up of exKettering Town chairman Peter Mallinger, David Dunham and Mick Leech and in 2009, under Graham Drury, the Steelmen won the Southern League title. The Steelmen narrowly missed out on a play-off spot during their first season in the Conference North.

The move to the Southern League looked to be a good one as the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier Division in 1964, but promotion was gained the following year. The club made several unsuccessful applications to join the Football League, although they did receive one vote in 1966.

Club chairman Peter Mallinger sadly passed away in January 2011, just months before the club’s new 3,000 capacity Steel Park stadium was due to open. His son David Mallinger took charge of the club and a positive start to life in their new home led the Steelmen into playoff contention and the fi rst round proper of the FA Cup, where they were beaten by Bristol Rovers at the half-way stage.

The club moved to the multi-purpose Rockingham Triangle venue in 1985 but it didn’t prove to be a lucky move as the Steelmen were once again relegated from the Premier Division in 1990. They didn’t spend long out

Sadly off-field issues had an effect on results and Corby only managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the 2011/12 season, with Graham Drury leaving the club at the end of the campaign.

CORbY tOWN hIStORY In the summer of 2012, a Leicestershire businessman took control of the club, with Ian Sampson being installed as manager.

the winning goal for Corby with just nine minutes remaining.

However after a tough start to the season Sampson departed and was replaced by his assistant manager Chris Plummer. The former Peterborough Northern Star manager could not repeat the survival act of the previous year however, with Corby Town being relegated from the Blue Square North at the end of the season.

However Corby suffered relegation after just one season in the National North. After a period of uncertainty as to which league Corby would be placed in by the F.A., they made their first ever start in the Northern Premier League for season 2016/2017.

Plummer remained in charge of the side, however resigned just two games into the 2013/14 season after heavy defeats against Burnham and Hemel Hempstead Town. The Chairman moved to appoint the managerial duo of Tommy Wright and Andrew Wilson, who helped to guide the club up the Southern League Premier Division table, however once again financial issues at the club prevented any real challenge to reach the play-offs. In April 2014 it was announced that a local consortium of seven businessmen headed by Paul Glass had agreed a deal to purchase the club and save it from the threat of administration. Stevie Noble was appointed as the chairman and Tommy Wright was given sole charge of the first team, with Andrew Wilson departing. In his first year in charge of the side Tommy Wright led his team to the Southern League Premier Division Championship. The Steelmen secured the title and promotion back to the Conference North with a dramatic 3-2 win on the final day of the season against Poole Town who had led the division by one point going into that fixture. Spencer Weir-Daley scored

Tommy Wright was relieved of his position in early October 2016 after a poor start, and was replaced by Gary Mills ex Kings Lynn, and Wrexham Assistant manager in mid-October 2016 as Corby looked to kick start season 2016/2017. However Mills was relieved of his position after just 6 months, the job being placed in Steven Kinniburgh’s hands for the rest of this season 2016/2017. In early May 2017 David Bell was appointed Manager along with Rob Gould as his Assistant as Corby hoped they could succeed in getting the club back into the 4th tier after 2 relegations in succession tumbling from the National North through the Northern Premier Leagues in successive seasons. After a poor start to the 2017/2018 season the club parted company with them in late September 2017. Director of Football Steven Kinniburgh taking charge in a capacity of interim manager. Steven was made permanent manager in Late March 2018.He appointed Ashley Robinson as his assistant in June 2018.

RePORtING IN

dUNStabLe tOWN 2-0 NORthWOOd You may recall, Nick Hayes’ successful loan spell with us last season. Nick is tall and very strong, but for a young man of only 19 he showed his agility and prowess in denying Northwood several goal scoring opportunities. One save, low and down to his right in the first half just before half time kept the scores equal at a time when Northwood were in the ascendancy and showing dangerous offensive intention. Northwood had struck the bar midway through the first half as Dunstable struggled to find their rhythm and neat passing football style. Even before then, Nick had needed to be at his best to keep the Blues goal intact. There were flourishes from Dunstable in the first half which gave us all hope that a strong second half performance might get us over the line. The first half ended with shots from both Saul Williams and Chris Wreh in stoppage time, but overall Northwood had held the upper hand and had played some good football, no doubt buoyed by their mid- week Middlesex County Cup win away at Wingate & Finchley. The fact that the scores were still level at half time was largely due to Nick Hayes and the crossbar. The half-time team talk from Messrs McCool & Jackson obviously worked as Dunstable started the second half on the front foot and within two minutes Joint top goal-scorer, Chris Wreh, showed patience and calmness personified to place the ball beyond Luke Sheldrick in a crowded penalty area and in so doing notched up his 7th competitive goal of the season. This was just the start Dunstable had prayed for, and minutes later, Arel Amu got free and placed an inviting ball almost to the feet of

an advancing Saul Williams who was defeated only by a cruel bounce which took the ball away from him and the chance was gone. Saul, Chris and Arel have established an almost perfect partnership which has seen the three lads collectively score 19 goals between them this season. That understanding of each other’s game so nearly paid further dividend five minutes later as Dunstable turned up the pressure. However Northwood hadn’t come simply to make up the numbers and tried their best to get a foothold back in the game. That was so nearly the case a little before the hour mark when a snap shot from Ned Clarke ,who struck the ball hard and true, could only find the outstretched palms of Nick Hayes at full strength. A competitive second half continued with both sides seeking to exploit any small chances they could engineer against each other’s well organised midfield and defences. Mainly half chances were the most both sides could wrestle from their opponents until the 84th minute when Arel Amu finished with his usual aplomb and settled Dunstable nerves, and in so doing booked Dunstable’s passage into the next round. This was the first clean sheet of the season for Dunstable with things starting to click now at the back since the return of Kyle Lincoln. When things are tight at the back and you have the predatory instincts of goal scorers Arel, Chris & Saul up front you are more likely to get wins than draws or losses. .

deveLOPING ChaMPIONS

Some of our youth teams have been out and about thanking their sponsors this week. The Dunstable Town Under 9s Lions (above) would like to say a big thank you to tRG Logistics for sponsoring their tracksuits for the season and also Shire homecare for sponsoring the Lions new match day kit. Meanwhile, our Under 8s Pumas presented a bouquet of flowers to thank their new sponsor the Sandwich bar (dunstable) for supporting them and kitting them out in training wear and match day kit, before they were treated to pre match bacon rolls!

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

20 October 1982 - The Luzhniki Stadium Disaster On 20 October 1982, Russia suffered its worst sporting disaster when at least 66 people died as a result of a stampede at Spartak Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. Some reports place the number of casualties as high as 340. A crowd of approximately 10,000 was there that day to watch Spartak Moscow challenge HFC Haarlem in the second round of the UEFA Cup. The low number of spectators, caused in part by extraordinarily cold weather that day, prompted stadium officials to open only the East Stand, with only one exit. Spartak took a 1-0 lead into injury time and several supporters made their way out of the stadium. But a late goal from Spartak defender Sergei Shvetsov drew several of them back toward the stands to join in the celebration. The

two streams of people met at the exit, where dozens of people were trampled and crushed. The official death toll is 66, but eyewitnesses claim to have seen hundred of bodies. Russian authorities initially covered up the incident, with newspapers reporting only that there had been an accident at the stadium that had injured some supporters. Russian newspaper Sovetsky Sport finally broke the full story in 1989--seven years later. Three years after that, a memorial was placed outside the stadium.

The 4th of October, saw a performance of Help! by Viki Browne at The Place Theatre in Bedford. Help! is a show about falling apart, pulling yourself together and being surprised by what you’re left with. It is for anyone who’s ever struggled. Mind BLMK was represented at the performance by our service user, Eamon who sat on a panel after the show as well to talk about his lived experience of mental health. After the performance he said: “It was a privilege to witness the performance and something special to behold.” The Constellations performed some lovely songs and poetry at the start of the evening and then Viki gave a moving but also humorous account of her mental health struggles that resonated with everyone who was there. It was a real team effort at the after play discussion as the members of the panel

all gave their thoughts and experiences answering the audience questions. Another audience member from ELFT said: “I am still remembering parts of the performance and being positively impacted by its power, truth and poignancy.” All in all, it sounds like the evening was a great success and we’re so pleased to have been able to work in partnership with Viki and The Place Theatre to bring the discussion of mental health to a wider audience. With many thanks as well to the audience members for their generous donations to Mind BLMK.

ON the ROad WIth the bLUeS

A Bedford Town Football Club was in existence by 1884, although it changed its name to Bedford Association in 1887. As there were no leagues at the time, the club played friendly matches in cups, including the Kettering Charity Cup and the Luton Charity Cup, before disappearing in 1891. The name Bedford Town reappeared in 1894 when Swifts, a club founded in 1890, were renamed. They absorbed Bedford Rovers in 1896, and although local leagues had been formed, the club continued to play only cup matches and friendlies. However, the club disappeared around the turn of the century. On 31 July 1908 a new Bedford Town was formed at the Association Rooms on Harpur Street. They joined Division One of the Northamptonshire League, finishing bottom of the table in their first two seasons, but avoiding relegation to Division Two. They went on to finish as runners-up for three consecutive seasons between 1911–12 and 1913–

14 before the league closed down due to World War I. They also won the Northamptonshire Senior Cup in 1912–13. After the war the club continued in the league, finishing as Division One runners-up in 1929–30 before winning the title in 1930–31. The following season saw them finish in second place again, after which they won back-to-back titles in 1932–33 and 1933–34. The league was then renamed the United Counties League, with Bedford finishing as runners-up in 1934–35 and reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 3–2 at home to Dartford. They finished as runners-up in 1936– 37, remaining in the league until World War II. In 1945 Bedford joined the Southern League. They reached the first round of the FA Cup several times in the early 1950s, losing 2–0 at Swindon Town in 1951–52, 4–0 at Weymouth in 1953–54 and 2–0 at Dorchester Town in 1954–55. In 1955 they applied for election to the Football League after finishing eighteenth in the Southern League, but received no votes.

ON the ROad WIth the bLUeS The club are thought to have been founded in 1884, although the first evidence of their existence dates to 1887 when the Kempston Rovers rugby club played their first football match. At the rugby club’s AGM in 1891, it was decided to create a football team called Kempston Montrose. Three years later Kempston Montrose folded and its assets transferred to Kempston Association. An 1895 meeting saw another new team formed, Kempston Rovers. They gained the nickname “the Walnut boys” due to Kempston being well known for its walnuts. The club initially played in both the Bedford & District League and the Biggleswade & District League; they won the Bedford & District League in 1907–08 and 1908–09 and the Biggleswade & District League in 1910–11 and 1911–12. In 1927 they joined the Bedfordshire & District County League, which became the South Midlands League in 1929, where they remained until switching to Division Two of the United Counties League in 1953. They won the division in 1955–56, and the following season Division Two and One were

merged into one league in which Kempston finished runners-up. In 1957–58, the club were United Counties League champions. The league was split into two division again in 1961–62 and Kempston were placed in Division Two. Despite finishing tenth that season, they were promoted to Division One. In 1973, Division One was renamed the Premier Division and in 1974–75 Kempston were league champions again, also reaching the fifth round of the FA Vase. In 1978–79 Kempston reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, the furthest they have ever got in the competition. They repeated their record FA Vase run in 1980– 81, again reaching the fifth round. Rovers were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1982– 83 season, having finished bottom of the Premier Division, but were promoted again in 1985–86 after winning Division One.
