FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome back to Creasey Park for our fixture against Crawley Green . We welcome their players, officials, and supporters and look forward to an exciting fixture. Crawley Green have made a very good start to the season and we look forward to a really competitive encounter. Those who attended on Tuesday night will share the frustration of a result that did not reflect our performance, particularly in the second half. Some excellent goalkeeping , the woodwork , and effective ‘time management’ (not dealt with by the officials) by the opposition, led to a narrow defeat. I said in my programme notes on Tuesday that our rewards will surely come. I still believe that, but will have to learn some more patience for the time being. A couple of the team personally apologised to me for the result on Tuesday. Guys, it was not necessary. It’s clear that you are trying to play the right way and that you are fully committed to the cause. We go again this afternoon. Today , we will be honouring the life of Karl O’ Gorman . As a longtime supporter of the club, Karl epitomised all that is best about a being loyal follower of your local team. A tribute has been written by our former Chairman Alex Alexandrou, and is contained later in the programme. I’ll let Alex’s words sum up how we all feel. This afternoon we are also supporting the Noah Enterprises charity by collecting warm clothes and toiletries ,in association
with Develop EBP. This is the second home fixture in November that we will be collecting. Please support this initiative if you can. The Noah charity has an excellent reputation for meeting the needs of those who are struggling with the basics of life. Just a reminder that you / your company can sponsor a match here at Creasey Park for as little as £100, similarly you could sponsor a player at £50 a season , and last but not least, why not sponsor the match ball for as little as £30 a match? Please speak to any of the committee who will be only too pleased to sign you up. Finally, I hope you enjoy the game, really get behind the team , and that we enjoy the deserved rewards of the teams endeavours.

This month, in association with local education and training centre Develop EBP, we will be collecting warm clothes and toiletries for Luton based charity, NOAH Enterprise. As part of Develop’s learners social inclusion project, they are collecting for NOAH and we at Dunstable Town are keen to assist them and bolster their donation. Clean, new and gently-used clothing of all kinds are helpful. Underwear, t-shirts and socks, new and gently-used jeans and shoes, and professional clothing for those looking for work or re-entering the workforce. Warm outerwear, coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves, and sleeping bags are also in need. Many service users arrive at NOAH each morning looking to have a wash, clean their teeth and have a shave. Items most welcome include razors, toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, hand cream, shampoo and feminine hygiene products. Please bring your donations to our home games during November. (12th November v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, 16th November v Crawley Green and 30th November v Leverstock Green)

LOCAL NON-LEAGUE CHAT with Ollie Bayliss
The idea of an international break is something that Premier League and Championship fans are very familiarly with, but rarely is it something that troubles non-league teams. Last week, Hemel Hempstead Town, in the 6th tier of English football, were granted permission to postpone two of their games because of three international call-ups. Ricardo German and Tyrone Sterling were both selected by Grenada. Winger Craig Braham-Barrett was called up by Montserrat. Whilst we all understand the process of a professional player travelling and playing for nations like England, France or Germany, it’s a lot more interesting when it involves a parttime player going halfway round the world. For starters, job flexibility is essential to make it work. Most employers of a non-league footballer have to exercise some flexibility for Tuesday night away games or hastily rearranged fixtures, but the idea of your employee disappearing to the other side of the world for a week at short notice poses quite a challenge. It also means the player himself losing out on a few days’ pay as well. Thankfully in the vast majority of cases, the expenses of travel and accommodation are covered by the national team. I spoke to Craig Braham-Barrett on the Non-League Show, he said the only thing he had to do to travel to Montserrat was pick which seat he wanted on the flight. Everything else was sorted out and arranged for him, including accommodation in some top hotels! Braham-Barrett captained Montserrat in his
most recent game for the nation, something he describes as the highlight of his sporting life. An even more impressive achievement considering it was only a year ago, at the age of 30, he accepted his first ever call-up. Despite its small population, there’s a number of good quality players that represent the nation. Charlton’s Lyle Taylor, brothers Brandon and James Comley, who play for Colchester and Maidenhead, as well as Bromley’s Adrian Clifton. On the show Craig said that whilst other Caribbean nations try and play passing technical football, they’ve brought a little bit of an English non-league style to their nation playing long and direct football which has seen them lose just one of their last seven games. A great improvement for the nation that was once ranked lowest in the world. Hemel’s trio of internationals are of course not the only ones playing in our lower leagues. Boreham Wood’s Ricky Shakes has appeared 11 times for Guyana with teammate Kieran Murtagh having played eight games for Antigua and Barbuda. Up the road Jamaican international Lloyd Doyle is at Kings Langley, Hertford Town’s Chikosi Basden plays for Bermuda and Beaconsfield’s Dean Morgan has represented Montserrat. Whilst it might be a bit frustrating for a nonleague club to be without a player or two whilst they’re away representing their nation, you certainly can’t begrudge them the experience. The knowledge they gain from a different football culture might also give them a little extra boost back on the pitches of England.
CRAWLEY GREEN HISTORY Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99 year lease from the Council. The New Club house was formally open on 19th June, 1992 by then Luton Town manager, David Pleat. The badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. In 2018 Luton Town FC and Crawley Green FC further enhanced their club partnership with the announcement that Crawley Green FC will play their home games at The Brache training ground from season 2018-2019. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of
the National League System, have been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately in that time they have failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision has meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years now, to enable the team to continue to play at that level. This is a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), means that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals. Luton recently installed a brand new allweather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green will complete the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen.
CRAWLEY GREEN HISTORY “In the past we have seen a number of ex-Crawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition the recently transferred Tyreeq Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system. “A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. “In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people have the opportunity to participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, selfconfidence and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.”
Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.” In recognition of his services to the community and sport, Crawley Green Sports & Social Club Chairman, Tony Talbot was awarded a BEM – British Empire Medal - in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List.

A TRIBUTE TO KARL O’GORMAN It was with deep and profound sadness that I learnt of Karl O’Gorman’s passing. I knew that Karl was terminally-ill but you always hope against hope. I have known Karl since I moved to Dunstable and started supporting the club in 2003. He was invariably to be found with The Regiment, discussing the finer points of football and referees but not always in that order. I found Karl to be a quiet man but with a sharp dry wit that often brought a smile to my face when he made a funny quip, that was invariably much better timed then the tackles of our back four. He made not only me feel welcome but also my son Louie, who started watching Dunstable Town when he was three years old. Karl and The Regiment may not know this but their kindness, welcome embrace and taking the time to talk to Louie, helped him regain his self-esteem at a crucial time in his young life. For that I will be everindebted to Karl and The Regiment.
From my perspective it was the tumultuous Summer of 2017 that Karl made an even greater impression on me and ensured the ultimate survival of the club. During that period when we did not know whether the club would survive for a myriad of reasons, Karl was one of the fans that stepped up to the plate as our cousins from across the pond are fond of saying. Karl attended the supporters’ meetings during that period of uncertainty, chipping in with sound suggestions and ultimately backing to the hilt the supporters’ takeover in that historic Summer for the club. However, it did not stop there with Karl. Not only, did he help raise funds by dipping into his own pocket but he also stepped up as a matchday volunteer. This would include manning the turnstiles, retrieving stray footballs that ballooned beyond Creasey Park thanks to forwards of all teams blaming a bobble, the length of the grass, the roundness of ball – in fact anything but their own accuracy and skill. Invariably, this would lead to more funny quips from Karl that would lighten our mood when things were not going well on the pitch. It is thanks to the likes of Karl that we have a football club we can be proud of because Karl cared. You will be missed and thank you for what you did for the club. Alex Alexandrou

REPORTING IN
OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS The Blues slipped to a narrow home defeat on Tuesday night, despite an unwavering tsunami of pressure in the second half. Lewis Merridan scored the only goal of the game in the eleventh minute after Dunstable failed to deal with a corner, allowing Merridan to blast home from close range. Town had started the game well, with both Chris Stapleton and Luke Little unable to convert early half-chances, and Eric Ameyaw looking sturdy at the back. Joe Hankins once again looked a real threat, and would have been afforded a golden opportunity when Stapleton headed a Dan Blackman free kick back across goal, but Hankins was just ahead of the ball, and it bounced off of his hip harmlessly. A miscommunication between the visiting midfield allowed Hankins to drive towards goal, sitting one defender on the ground with a twisting and jinking run, but his eventual shot was blocked well. Hankins had the final chance of the first half too, after an outswinging Blackman corner was met by the head of captain Seb Smith, with the ball landing at the attacker’s feet about seven yards from goal, but with Dynamos goalkeeper James Weatherill getting off his line swiftly, Hankins had no time or space to direct his effort around him. Having had the better of the first half, Dunstable Town came out for the second half read to begin a real onslaught on the away side, carving out their first chance from a Daniel Trif throw-in which was cut back across goal by Craig Packham to Little, but ‘keeper Weatherill was equal to his effort.
The home side seemed to be getting joy down the right in the early stages of the second half, and again Packham was causing problems when he cut back onto his left foot and fired a shot from the edge of the box which clipped the outside of the post. Another chance for Town came from a corner kick which fell to the feet of Khyreece SmithReid, but a fine reflex save from the Aylesbury stopper again frustrated the Creasey Park faithful. Hankins was back at it again with good work on the left flank, and his cross eventually squirmed through to Trif, who had to take his shot on the turn, and by that time the angle had closed and he was only able to direct wide of the post from six yards out. With twenty minutes left to play Dunstable were given a man-advantage when Dan McAteer was sin-binned, but perhaps the best chance came after Aylesbury were back up to full numbers, when Smith-Reid was played through in injury time, only to see his low shot saved well by the in-form Weatherill.

ON THIS DAY ...
by Brian Seal
16 NOVEMBER 1893 - THIS ... IS ... SPARTA! On 16 November 1893, AC Sparta was founded in Prague. It has since become the most successful football club in the Czech Republic and has launched the careers of several star footballers, including Jan Koller, Pavel Nedvěd, Petr Čech, and Tomáš Rosický. The idea for the club came from three brothers, Václav, Bohumil and Rudolf Rudl, who held the founders meeting on 16 November 1893 where they approved the articles of association. They originally chose the name Athletic Club Královské Vinohrady after their local district in Prague, but changed it the following year to AC Sparta in honor of the ancient Greek city. Sparta won their first league title in 1912, when Prague was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Since that first one, they have one
at least one title in every decade except the 1970s, when they went into a period of decline that culminated with their relegation in 1975. After only one season in the second division, they returned to the top flight and eventually reclaimed the title in 1984. They won it most recently in 2014, their 33rd league title of the Czechoslovak/Czech First League. Sparta were the second football club to use that name, following Sparta Rotterdam, who were founded in 1888.
