from the boardroom As the season draws to a close, there are many nervous fans surviving the trials and tribulations of their team A very warm welcome to you all this afternoon and in particular everyone involved with Crawley Green, we hope you enjoy your time at Creasey Park today and no matter the result at 4.45 I’m sure football will end up being the winner I would also like to welcome Deputy Mayor Councillor Liz Jones, who is today’s match sponsor, we really appreciate your support and hope you enjoy our hospitality and a great game of football As the season draws to a close, there are many nervous fans around the country surviving the trials and tribulations of their team. However, it is also the time where all fans come together to remember those who travelled to Hillsborough only to never return
of Dunstable, with our community projects aimed to improve people’s mental and physical well-being. Yes, I want the club to be famous for its inevitable successes on the field, under the stewardship of our amazing coaching team, but I also want it to be famous for the work we do off the field, so please spread the word about what we are doing, or if you’re not aware of what we’re doing, please speak to one of us or visit our website for more details Thank you for your incredible support
Matt Carrington #FollowTheBlues
This has been made even more poignant this year with the addition of Andrew Devine’s name to the Hillsborough Memorial, who sadly passed away last year at the age of 55 because of the life-changing injuries he sustained during the tragedy, the 97th name to be added to the memorial Our thoughts are with his family, as well as all those who lost a loved one on that tragic day and to remember those that were lost, we will be holding a minute’s silence before the game As a youngster I followed Liverpool because of their successes on the field, but the main reason I continue to follow them (after Dunstable Town of course) is because of the bond created between the club and the city. This is something I want to see within the town DUNSTABLE TOWN v crawley green - 3

Welcome to Paul Blackman, Matt Harding, the players, committee and supporters of Crawley Green ahead of today’s game. It is our final home league game of the season and is a pay what you want on the gate, so I am hopeful of another excellent crowd here at Creasey Park. We are expecting a tough game today against a very different Crawley Green side to the side we played in January. We go into the game at the time of writing with Crawley Green sitting bottom of the table and if anyone expects this game to be an easy 3 points then you are wrong. We learned a very harsh and valuable lesson 2 weeks ago away at Holmer Green and I am sure my words are still ringing in the ears of some from that game. I have managed against Paul Blackman’s sides several times over the years albeit at Under 18’s level and understand what we can expect today. If anyone in the ground believes that today is a typical end of season fixture in the sunshine with us sitting in 9th with nothing to play for then they are very much mistaken. Every member of our playing squad is playing for their futures here next season. I know how much our group have enjoyed their time this season and I know they are desperate to be here next season. You can expect an even more demanding version of myself than ever to ensure we send the supporters away happy. Last Saturday’s win away at Oxhey Jets was especially pleasing for me. I was delighted with the way we controlled the game from start to finish and Gouldy didn’t have a shot to save in the game. Over the last 3 games I have been brutal with my group in terms of honesty and challenged them to “toughen up”. We got back to a much more aggressive approach

on Saturday. I thought our 1st and 2nd line pressing was outstanding on the day along with our shape and structure when the opposition had the ball. The pleasing thing for me was the 3 goals from set plays. We are a big side most weeks and we haven’t done well enough from attacking set plays in recent weeks. Dan Naylor made 3 assists with Joe Mead scoring 2 either side of a Benji Crilley header. I thought all over the pitch our team was excellent on Saturday. We tackled with our bodyweight, punched our headers, and did the basics extremely well. We really got after Oxhey Jets and deserved not only the win but our clean sheet. Our back line was excellent and really set the tone of the game by being aggressive, on the front foot and ultimately keeping us up the pitch. I thought the energy, desire and athleticism of our midfielders and forwards forced their back line into mistakes and allowed our midfielders to steal possession high up the pitch. When you think we started the game missing Liam McCrohan, Isaac Olaleye, Jamie Nicholls, Joe Sellers-West, and Joe Parmley it made the result even more impressive. It was a positive win but certainly not one we are getting carried away with. We are hard at work identifying key recruitment targets that we feel will add to the group. Anyone coming in has to better the group! There is no point bringing in players that will be the same as what we have here already. Congratulations to both Risborough Rangers and New Salamis on promotion. Fair credit to both they have been the best teams consistently over the season and fully deserve to go up. Whilst it will be nice to see the back of them, next season we know there will be
15/04/2022 00:21:14
manager’s notes joe deeney We took over bottom with six points, over a quarter of a way into the season, and now we are in 9th with two games to go new teams in our league as well as several other sides that will make improvements. We are well aware there will be some ferocious competition next season and I am thoroughly looking forward to starting a new campaign with everyone on equal points! When you look at Risborough Rangers, New Salamis, and Hadley as the top 3 they are groups that have been together a long time and that further reiterates my feelings that I don’t want to make wholesale changes. Retention is as important if not more important than recruitment. We have a squad of players that have nowhere near reached their peak yet and there is so much more to come from them. I have no doubts in my head that we can provide the best environment for them to continue to develop and flourish. It has been great to see the relationship that this group of players have built with everyone at the club from supporters right through to our outstanding group of directors. The club is really together with everyone looking out and supporting each other and is a pleasure to be a part of it. On reflection I have been relatively pleased with how things have gone on the pitch since our arrival. We took over bottom with 6 points to our name over a quarter of a way into the season and now find ourselves in 9th with 2 games to go. 2 weeks ago, after our result away at Holmer Green it was very hard to see things in perspective. I must give full credit to each and everyone of our loyal following, chairman and directors for their support. Their words of support and a reality check of “we win together, we lose together” really helped and I was delighted we were able to put smiles back on faces last Saturday. Once again, we
crawley-green-print.indd 5
travelled in great numbers and outnumbered yet another team at their home ground. The efforts from everyone to travel means the world to us. The support we have continued to receive has been incredibly humbling and I will miss that buzz of a Saturday at 3pm when the season finishes. Whilst I am sure my family will be grateful for a week or 2 to have me back, I am sure they will be as keen as anyone to get rid of me on Saturdays again. It will also give you all a much-needed chance to rest your eardrums ready for next season! Next season we will work hard to ensure we put a team on the field that the people of Dunstable can continue to be proud to support as their own. It has been a whirlwind 6 months and I have enjoyed it immensely. I am incredibly proud to be the Head Coach of this football club and look forward to the continued journey with you all. A huge thank you to all my wonderful staff, players, supporters, committee, and directors for everything that you all do. Next season we will strive to ensure that we are not playing our final home game of the season in April! Please keep the fantastic support coming and let’s ensure as a club we all play our part to bring ongoing success. Enjoy today’s game and hope to see you all on Thursday night against Ardley United.

L Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99-year lease from the Council. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, had been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately, in that time they had failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years, to enable the team to continue to play at that level. This was a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that
other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), meant that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals.
M
Luton Clown installed a brand-new all-weather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green completed the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile, and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen.

“In the past we have seen a few ex-Crawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition, the recently transferred Tyreeq Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system. “A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. “In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people can participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income, and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, self-confidence, and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.” Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.”
was installed for hockey in 1991, forcing the club to resign from the Isthmian League; the pitch was later upgraded to 3G astroturf. A wooden stand remains in place from the Vauxhall Motors era. Their badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. They joined Division One of the South Midlands League in 1995, and when the league merged with the Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League in 1997, they were placed in Division One North. However, they left the league at the end of the 1997–98 season. In 1999 the club re-joined the Spartan South Midlands League, and were placed in Division One, which was renamed Division Two in 2001. They won the Division in 2004–05, but were not promoted. In 2007–08 they finished as runners-up and were promoted to Division One. In 2011–12 they won the Division One Cup. They won it again in 2015–16. The season also saw them finish second in the league and earning promotion to the Premier Division.

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play

It’s been pleasing to see our under 7s to under 10s all having fun and playing some great football The last home game in the league this afternoon and we will be presenting our first winners of the Aaron Bateman Trophy this afternoon. The season is coming to an end and before I talk about the teams, a big congratulations to our under 7s Lions on winning the PSA Beds Tournament at Creasey Park last weekend. Well done to John Sanders and the boys. All our competitive teams have been competing right up until the end. Our under 12s Whites falling away in the league over the last month but a great season from John, Lee, and the boys. The under 12s Lions are still competing and are sitting 4th, which has been a great season for Lukasz and the boys. Our under 12s Phoenix were well placed for a runners up but sadly lost George, their keeper to COVID and another injury, and lost 2 out of their last 3 games. The boys finished the season with a full squad in style beating Bedford Town 2-1 to finish 3rd, which is a great season from Wayne and the boys.
Our under 14s Tigers have finished joint top and will now play in a play-off to see who finishes the winner of the league and they are still in the quarter finals of the plate competition. So still, plenty to play for. The under 14s Lions are still in a two-horse race with Tattenhoe for the division 1 title and are now through to the semi-final of the league Cup, so well done to all. It’s been pleasing to see our under 7s to under 10s all having fun and playing some great football. Our open session for our under 7s to under 11s will be taking place on the 19th and 26th May with trials for our under 12s to under 15s on the same date. Thanks for your support.

Oxhey Jets
Dunstable Town Mead 13, 89, Crilley 78
saturday 9th april • Premier Division The Boundary Stadium • attendance 64 • Andrew Madaras Last Saturday’s intermittent blizzards were replaced by sunny skies. Dunstable were able to turn their early possession and pressure into an early lead. Mead’s first goal for the club, a sublime header to guide Naylor’s free kick into the back of the net. The goal on 13 minutes gave Dunstable additional energy and twice in 10 minutes Bradley Shaw, in the Jets goal, saved well, initially from Terrence Muchineripi and then a Dan Naylor free kick. Benji Gray was all running and trickery and his delightful cross on 40 minutes down the left found the head of Remell Stirling who was only inches over with a towering header. This had been a good half for the Blues, although prophets of doom could be heard reminding anyone in earshot that we’d been ahead at the break last Saturday only to be undone in a poor second half display. Thankfully there was no repeat of last week’s second half performance. Each man did his job and played in a measured and controlled manner. However, while there was only one goal separating the teams, there was always the danger that Jets might find a way back into the game.
It was Faulkner’s persistence and ability which created the second goal. Chasing down a crossfield ball on the left-hand side, he cut in and unleashed a phenomenal curling shot which seemed destined to nestle in Shaw’s top corner. However, the keeper was his match and produced a flying one-handed save tipping the ball over for a corner. If Dunstable had been denied on that occasion, they were not to be denied a second time and went further ahead from the resulting corner. Naylor, again the architect. His beautifully flighted corner found Crilley at the back stick who guided the ball back across the goal and into the far-left corner. The goal gave Dunstable breathing space coming with just 12 minutes of normal time to play. Minutes later Dylan Baker so nearly added to the score line with a deceptive shot which Shaw did well to push round his right-hand post.
However, Dunstable’s backline and midfield held their ground. Jets had possession but not the key to unlock the Dunstable defence.
The goal of the game came with two minutes left to play. Muchineripi was brought down advancing at speed and with purpose down the right. Naylor took the free kick, low and to Mead, just inside the box. Mead controlled the ball played it to his left and from a tight angle managed to find the narrowest of gaps at the near post to put the icing on the cake.
On the hour mark, Dunstable made a double substitution. Ethan Creary & Benji Gray replaced by Jack Percy and Kyle Faulkner.
The win lifts the Blues into 9th place, their highest position at any stage in the three seasons they’ve been at Step 5. DUNSTABLE TOWN v crawley green - 35

this day
in footbal history..
16 April 1905 - Liverpool Runs The Table On 16 April 1905, Liverpool secured their second league title. It was the first time in league history that a newly-promoted team won the top flight.
3-2. But fortunately for them, Preston also lost, falling 2-0 at Sunderland. That result put the title out of Preston’s reach and made Liverpool the champions.
Liverpool won their first league title in 1901, but three seasons later, they finished the season as the seventeenth-placed team out of eighteen and were relegated to the Second Division. But they returned at the first opportunity and were back in the top flight for the 1904-05 season. Their return started poorly, with three losses in their first three matches. They turned things around quickly, however, winning twelve of their next fifteen to reach the top of the table by midDecember. Their good form continued into the second half of the season, with Preston North End in hot pursuit. At the start of the day on 16 April, Preston were five points back with three games left to play. Liverpool were away to Bolton, where they lost
