MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good evening and welcome to our new season. Welcome to everyone associated with Berkhamsted. I cannot wait for this season to really get going. I am really happy with the players we retained and the players we recruited. We may not have the biggest resource in this league but we’ve got a lot of excellent players and great lads. They know the ethos of the club and want to be part of our journey as they play the long game. In one year we have changed the culture of this club. We have integrated players from our development squad and some are now into their second season. This season several players will again be promoted and it is vital for our long term strategy that we continue to give these players opportunities. We are delighted that two players went onto full time football after their season with us and this is something we will always embrace. I expect this team to win many football matches this year and provide you with great entertainment along the way. Unfortunately, we lost our opener over at North Leigh. It was an entertaining match and we created so many chances on a very steep pitch that made our tactical approach pointless. But when you create so many chances despite the challenges it fills you with a lot of confidence.

Last week a lot of people got together for a golf day in memory of Ella Trif, wife of our player Daniel who had sadly lost her battle with cancer. It was such a humbling experience. Fantastic from our Hertfordshire neighbours Kings Langley who put two teams into this great charity day. It shows there is something special in non-league and certainly something special in our club. Enjoy the game.

ool Tony McC #COYB

In an epic journey and many a daunting away trip, Berko overcame Leighton Town, Hythe United, hornchurch, St helens Town, Brigg Town and gained a two-legged semi-final victory over Bedlington Terriers. In the return match at Broadwater, a new record crowd of 1,542 passed through the turnstiles to witness the 5–1 aggregate scoreline. 2004–05 – With reorganisation of the nonleague pyramid structure taking place, the club switched to the Southern Football League, competing in the Eastern Division. 2005–06 – Despite crippling financial troubles, current chairman, Guillermo Ganet, stabilised the club off the field and managed the team to safety in the Eastern Division. 2006–07 – With further pyramid restructuring taking place, the club was switched to Southern League Division One midlands and after a poor start to the season Guillermo Ganet stepped down as 1st team manager. The club was re-formed in 2009 and won the molten Spartan South midlands League Division 2 title in its first season, losing only once each at home and away. Winning division 2 by 9 points led to promotion to division 1. The team were again champions in 2010-11, this time by 15 points and were unbeaten at home in the league. This earned a second successive promotion and movement up to the Premier division, where the club has stayed ever since. The total of 107 points was the highest in the season for any club in the non-league pyramid, prompting the Herts. FA to award the club the prestigious Sir Stanley Rous Memorial Trophy. They won promotion to the Southern League by finishing as Premier division runners up in 2018. 2011 saw the new club enter the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup for the first time. The FA Cup tie with St Albans City produced the club’s largest attendance to date: 351 at Clarence Park, before going out at Broadwater in the replay. In 2012 they went out to metropolitan Police in the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup, having knocked out hoddesdon Town, hadley and Uxbridge. 2013 brought home wins over AFC Dunstable and Harefield United, but defeat at Daventry Town. Two years ago Berkhamsted reached the last 16 of the FA Vase, going out 2-1 at home to the eventual winners morpeth Town. There were four home wins over United Counties League sides: Woodford United, Northampton ON Chenecks, Northampton Spencer and AFC Kempston rovers and a 3-2 win at Saffron Walden Town. That was followed by a 4-2 win at home to hullbridge Sports, a side they lost to away after extra time in 2013. Berko have reached cup finals in each of the last six seasons. RePORtING IN

bedFONt SPORtS 3-1 dUNStabLe tOWN It’s a football saying as old as the hills but this was the proverbial case of a match of two halves. Dunstable, in the first half, offensively minded, created a hatful of chances, but went into the interval with only one goal to show for all their attacking endeavours, a goal of clinical execution right on the stroke of half time, by leading goalscorer, Chris Wreh, only to be punished three times in the second half by a much sharper looking Bedfont side.

the break, and came close to breaking the deadlock themselves a couple of times in the first 45 minutes.

The ground is situated only a mile from heathrow and is neatly appointed with ample seating and covered standing for protection from the elements. Bedfont were runners up last season in the Combined Counties League and gained promotion into the Isthmian League South Central Division, an equivalent league to the Southern League Division 1 Central, which Dunstable will be competing in.

Bedfont came out for the second half tails up and snapping at the tackle. They equalised on 50 minutes and after that matched Dunstable in every department and most importantly converted a larger share of their chances when they came their way. A second goal came from the penalty spot on 70 minutes and a third goal in the final minute gave the final score a finishing gloss which was harsh on mcCool’s charges who had shown a lot of resilience and fight.

There was much to like about Dunstable’s first half performance. Alex Taylor looked solid and combative in midfield, Saul Williams’ running caused the home defence problems, while Arel Amu, Jetmir Esso and Chris Wreh continue to look a formidable attacking option. There was a welcome return for Gedeon okito and for the fit again Will Hunt in goal. Both played well in the first half then gave way to allow Blues boss, Tony mcCool to try different players and shapes. Hassan Sheikh again played with assurance and maturity and looks to be a shrewd summer signing. While Dunstable had the greater percentage share of possession and created more of the chances, Bedfont were always dangerous on

Chris Wreh’s goal on the stroke of half time had been coming as the Blues had sought to tighten their grip on the game, but was scant overall reward for an impressive first half.

It’s always nice to win matches and nobody likes to lose, however it’s important to stress that in these pre-season friendlies the results are always secondary to the main purpose of getting players match fit and being able to try out different formations and tactics. Tony mcCool, I suspect, by now has a good idea what his strongest line up is, and how he will set his stall out. Every squad player has been given a good run out and a chance to impress. Competition for those starting eleven shirts is high and the mood in the camp is good. Loyalty to the cause demonstrated by the presence yesterday of injured goalkeeper Nathan harness, defender, Ben Collins and his brother, who had all travelled over 60 miles to come and watch their teammates.

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

21 August 1965 - He Looks Pretty Tall But His Heels Are High Substitutions during matches in the English Football League were first permitted in the 1965–66 season. During the first two seasons after the law was introduced, each side was permitted only one substitution during a game. However, the substitute could only replace an injured player. From the 1967–68 season, this rule was relaxed to allow substitutions for tactical reasons. On 21 August 1965, Keith Peacock of Charlton Athletic became the first substitute used in the Football League when he replaced injured goalkeeper Mike Rose eleven minutes into their away match against Bolton Wanderers.

On the same day, Bobby Knox became the first ever substitute to score a goal when he scored for Barrow against Wrexham. Unfortunately for Peacock, Charlton lost 4-2. In later years, the number of substitutes permitted in Football League matches has gradually increased; at present each team is permitted to name either five or seven substitutes depending on the country and competition, of which a maximum of three may be used. In England, the Premier League increased the number of players on the bench to five in 1996, and the number available on the bench would be seven from the 2008–09 season.

dtFC LIONeSSeS beGIN theIR FOOtbaLL OdYSSeY As part of its football community development activities, Dunstable Town FC in partnership with Bedfordshire FA and English Schools FA launched its first female team in the form of the Dunstable Town Lionesses Under 18s Ability Counts side. The team is composed of students from Weatherfield Academy, which is the club’s Community Partner School. Josh Spavins and Tia Fleming, organised a one-day event at the County FA’s headquarters, where the Lionesses were joined with Challney High School for Girls. They started with training sessions that developed their dribbling, shooting and tackling skills. This was followed by the girls taking part in a number of matches where the

players from both teams played together in a mini-three team tournament where they could put into action what they had been practiced. The day ended with the Lionesses and Challney High School playing a match. Challney went 2-0 up but the Lionesses in their first match managed to pull it back with two late goals to earn a well-deserved 2-2 draw. Josh Spavins felt it was a highly successful day and stated that: “Bedfordshire FA wants to roll out Ability Counts Girls football throughout the county and is committed to actively encouraging and inviting schools and clubs to get involved, so events like this become a regular activity”

BLMK Dunstable Town Football Club will be raising money for mental health and fighting against mental health stigma this season. The club has chosen to support mind, the mental health charity, as their charity of the year, to give a voice to footballers affected by mental health problems and send the message that mental health is just as important as physical health. The club will support the charity by raising vital funds throughout the season and will offer free training sessions, run by qualified coaches, to local mind organisations and their service users. The club will also offer safe spaces for mind members to come and watch home games at discounted rates. Each year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem and suicide is the most common form of death in males aged between 20-49 years in England and Wales. Neil Barker, Dunstable Town Chairman, said: “There have been some high profile cases of footballers taking the brave and principled stand to announce their own mental ill health, hoping it would encourage others to seek help. Sadly there has been similarly high profile cases of footballers that have taken their own lives when mental wellbeing seemed unobtainable. “Its’s crucial for us as a club that we send the important message that everyone has mental health, just as they have physical health, and that we as a club foster an environment of

open conversation and support. Mind has a brilliant reputation of being advocates for those often without a voice as they seek recovery and wellbeing, often through difficult personal and systemic pathways. We want to help raise funds for Mind to ensure that there is mental health support for anyone who needs it”. Karen Bolton, head of Community and Events Fundraising for mind, said: “We’re tremendously grateful to Dunstable Town Football Club for choosing Mind as its charity of the year. Not only is it a fantastic way to raise awareness about mental health problems, but all funds raised over the course of the year will mean that Mind can continue providing vital services, like our Infoline, so that no one has to face a mental health problem alone.” mind BLmK offers support across the Central Bedfordshire area. These are both wellbeing interventions that look at things that can affect your mental health and wellbeing and peer support sessions that help people to develop new skills. mind matters groups offer discussion groups covering any topics including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, self-confidence, goal setting. The group provides support in a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space to discuss your mental wellbeing. Alongside workshops, we provide a range of activities, such as walking groups, self-led art activities, pyrography and a drop in service. www.mind-blmk.org.uk

ON the ROad WIth the bLUeS The club was established in 1948, taking over from Stewarts & Lloyds as the main team in the town. The new team contained a mix of Stewarts & Lloyds and new players, and took over from Stewarts and Lloyds in the United Counties League. Their first league match saw them win 5–1 against Wellingborough Town. They went on to win back-to-back league titles in 1950–51 and 1951– 52, after which they joined the midland League as it was expanded to 24 clubs, with the reserve team taking the club’s place in the United Counties League. In 1958 Corby transferred to the Southern League, spending their first season in the North-Western Division, before being placed in Division One for the 1959–60 season. Despite only finishing sixth in 1961–62, Corby applied for election to the Football League. However, they failed to receive a single vote. After finishing seventh the following season the club applied again, and again received no votes. In 1963–64 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for a second time, losing 3–1 at home to Bristol

City. They appeared in the first round again the following season, losing 3–1 at home to Hartlepool United. The 2008–09 season saw Corby win the Premier Division, earning promotion to the Conference North. In 2010–11 the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time since the 1960s, losing 4–2 to Luton Town in a replay. They appeared in the first round again the following season, losing 3–1 at Bristol Rovers. After four seasons in the Conference North, Corby were relegated at the end of the 2012–13 season. They were Southern League Premier Division champions in 2014–15 and were promoted back to the National League North. However, another relegation in 2015–16 saw the club relegated to the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League. The club were transferred to Division One Central of the Southern League at the end of the 2017–18 season as part of the restructuring of the nonLeague pyramid.
