INSIDE THE BOARDROOM IT REALLY DOES GIVE ME GREAT PLEASURE TO WELCOME EASINGTON SPORTS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS TO CREASEY PARK FOR THIS FA CUP TIE Our visitors have travelled from just outside Banbury and have earned their place having defeated Tring Athletic 2-0 in the Extra Preliminary Round. We do our best to be gracious and welcoming hosts and hope every one of our guests enjoys their afternoon in our company and has a safe journey back home after the final whistle has blown. Our passage here was a nail-biting affair. 93 minutes on the clock and trailing by a goal to nil against Thame Rangers, Dan Blackman sends over a free kick from the left where Davide Pobbe heads in an equaliser to everyone’s great relief. The lottery of penalty shoot-outs is always a cruel way to exit any knock-out competition, and never more so last Wednesday as Thame Rangers missed their final penalty to send us through. Gareth summed things up nicely at the end when he stressed that Teams he puts out don’t give up and play to the final whistle. Those of you with long memories may well remember our away match at London Colney last season when two stoppage time goals snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. If you look back at the stats page in last Wednesday’s programme you’ll see how last season the goals we scored in the last fifteen minutes of games dwarfed every other quarter hour period, with our second half goal tally being twenty more than goals scored in the first half. Off the field we said a final thank you to Treasurer Dudley Peacham who did not stand for re-election at this year’s AGM. Dudley,

as many of you know was in the group of supporters who came forward to save the Club in May 2017 when the Club faced either voluntary relegation from the Southern League Premier Division or simply folding. His stewardship of the Club’s finances has been hugely appreciated and will be greatly missed, but we hope to see both him and Katrina at Creasey Park as often as possible. Our Crowdfunding Appeal £20K for 20K passed the £4,000 mark yesterday. I spoke to the L&D Hospital Fundraising Manager a few days ago to update her with events. She was delighted with our efforts and was incredibly grateful as are all of us, to everyone who has taken part either by completing the sponsored walk or by donating to the appeal. With the support and approval of the Luton & Dunstable Hospital we will continue with our fundraising efforts over the course of the next year and hope to announce the appointment of a Fundraising Officer shortly. We take our Corporate Social Responsibility seriously. We already have championed better mental health and de-stigmatising mental health problems through our links with Mind BLMK, supporting and promoting the work of Caddington Grove Care Home, and renewing contacts with Weatherfield Academy. Brad Cawthorne our Digital Manager works at Weatherfield and two of our stewards, Bradley Field and Jon Keenan are former students. You’ll see more of Brad’s work on our You Tube channel and he will be revamping our website over the next few weeks.

EASINGTON SPORTS

OPPOSITION SPOTLIGHT..

THE CLUB WAS FORMED IN THE IMMEDIATE POST-WAR PERIOD OF 1945/46 TO FULFIL THE SPORTING AND SOCIAL NEEDS OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE EASINGTON HOUSING ESTATE IN BANBURY The Club, then known as “The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports FC. The football was played on pasture-land to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality.

6 - DUNSTABLE TOWN V EASINGTON SPORTS

The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi-professional teams. (Aston Villa “A’, West Bromwich Albion “B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much

more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some “ups and downs’, Sports have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or wellsponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/platform to their careers.

CLUB INFO NICKNAME: The Clan

It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth.

MATCH REPORT DUNSTABLE TOWN 1-1 THAME RANGERS After a 183-day absence, competitive football returned on Wednesday evening for Dunstable Town, who beat a well-organised Thame Rangers side after forcing a penalty shoot-out in dramatic fashion. An FA Cup extra-preliminary round tie meant a high-stakes start to the season for Gareth Jackson’s Blues, who were given the tough task of maintaining the momentum gained six months ago. Chances came early for both sides, with Town’s Chris Stapleton unable to direct his sixth minute header on target before a Thame Rangers attacker responded by nodding narrowly wide at the other end. The first half was fairly evenly contested, and Dunstable came close again just before the break when Dan Blackman’s free-kick was sent low and wide to the goalkeeper’s right. The home side struggled to find their rhythm in the second half, and were punished on the hour mark when the defence failed to clear their lines effectively, allowing the visitors to take the lead with a neat finish past Dan Gould in the Dunstable goal.

Pobbe was again at the centre of things minutes later when he found himself in space twenty-five yards from goal, but his shot didn’t trouble the goalkeeper. Jeremiah Debayo came close in the eightyninth minute, when his free-kick from the edge of the box was met with a strong hand from the goalkeeper, having seemingly been destined for the top-corner. The pressure finally paid off in the ninety-fourth minute, when a free-kick was awarded on the left. With Debayo sensibly deciding against taking it quickly, and Town goalkeeper Gould heading forward, a looping defensive header fell into the path of the industrious Pobbe, who nodded into the net from close range. After a tense penalty shoot out, Dunstable Town emerged victorious, winning 5-4, and progress to the next round where they will host Easington Sports, who beat Tring Athletic 2-0 the previous evening.

Rangers looked to double their lead shortly thereafter, but a good defensive block saw the rebounding shot sent wide of the mark. As Town rallied in the closing stages, Davide Pobbe looked lively, and after beating the keeper to the ball and rounding him, saw his cross into a crowded box efficiently dealt with by the visiting defence.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S

YOUNG GUNS.

WE WOULD LIKE TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO THE UNDER 13S LIONS AND THE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE Both have sponsored first team players for the season with the under 13s Lions sponsoring Louis Octave and the Development Centre, Davide Pobbe, who scored the equaliser in the last round of the FA Cup. When it is safe to do so, we can’t wait for you all to come down to Creasey Park and get on the pitch. Fingers crossed it won’t be too long. A big congratulations to u11s player George Roberts, who has been asked to join the Stevenage Pre Academy section. We all wish George good luck. The new under 7s are all geared up for their first game in the MKDDL, so we wish them all the best and we are sure you will have lots of fun. The first youth team to kick off the 2020-21 season is the under 8s this Sunday, in the Mid Beds Mini Soccer League, so good luck to Tyler Dunnell and the boys.
