FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome back to Creasey Park this afternoon. We welcome our visitors from Edgware Town and trust they will enjoy their visit to Dunstable.

be routinely punished. As our esteemed assistant manager pointed out to me after the game, ‘ we either win or learn’. Wise words Ryan!

Our opponents have had a mixed start to the season but are sitting comfortably mid table , so today’s clash should be hard fought.

As promised in the last edition of our programme we can announce that we have signed up a number of new sponsorship agreements in recent weeks. Firstly, we welcome the GMB union. You will notice a number of their advertising boards both outside and pitch side. They were represented by Martin Foster at the Stortford game and we look forward to a long association. Similarly, we welcome Alexander Estate Agents, Vantage, and Grove Theatre. All of these will soon have a visual presence around the ground.

After the excitement of our FA Cup clash Bishop’s Stortford, we recorded an excellent away victory against Potton United last Saturday. Three points and a clean sheet were a fitting reward for a hardworking, professional performance. With a couple of key players missing through injury and prior commitments, the boys showed a real team spirit in what was a deserved win. Going back to the Bishop’s Stortford game, I just wanted to comment on the level of support and the excellent atmosphere created at Creasey Park. The presence of so many of our Junior Blues and their families really did show the potential that we are striving to unlock at the club. At one point ,it really did look like we were going to pull off the come back to top all come backs. Alas, we fell just short, but I can assure you there was a high degree of panic emanating from the Stortford bench as the minutes ticked by in the second half. The harsh half time scoreline did not reflect the pattern of play we had witnessed, but certainly did point out that with a proven professional such as Jamie Cureton on the pitch, any mistake or hesitation would

I’m delighted to give you forward notice of our 2nd Quiz Night . After the success of last season’s event a number of people have asked if we will be repeating. The answer is a resounding, ‘Yes!’ So, put Saturday November 9th 7.30pm at Creasey in your diary . Cost is £6 per person (including food) and we will also be having a Prize Raffle during the evening. We were packed out last year, so book your teams early. Speak to me to sign up. Finally, make some noise today for the boys. They really appreciate the support that you give.

ame Enjoy the g Neil

GAFFER’S NOTES Good afternoon very warm welcome to Creasey Park, especially to Fergus, His staff, players and supporters of Edgware Town. I hope you all have a pleasant afternoon with us and a safe journey home. We are in no doubt of the test that this afternoon holds for us. Edgware have had a solid start winning 3 from 6 in the league and currently sitting 8th. I am sure this will be as entertaining a match as the table and stats suggest it will be. We are obviously looking to continue our current form that has pleased me for the past 3 halves of football. I think I was one of many who were very disappointed with the first half of our FA cup match here to Bishop’s Stortford. To be 0-4 down at half time is a tough position for any team to be in. However every player to a man entered the 2nd half with a new courage and belief to take the game to them, play some football and make everyone including myself proud. I am sure that all who were there certainly did feel proud, as the support that afternoon was incredible. I thank you all for that. Last week we traveled to Potton, where we wanted to keep our performance levels high from the start. I was very pleased to see how we managed the game, especially with the early substitution of Jordan BoyceFuller through injury that gave Kachi Njoku his debut, a strong debut at that. It is also always nice to finish a game with a clean sheet too!

My last word this week is saved for Kai McArthur who was unfortunately stretchered off during the 2nd half against Bishop’s Stortford. He went straight to hospital where they initially diagnosed a dislocated ankle with ligament damage. However further scans this week have shown a fractured ankle that has resulted in Kai undergoing surgery to pin and screw the bone back into place. We all wish him well and a very speedy recovery to get back to us again soon! As always your support is so valuable to us, so continue being loud and enjoy the game!

EDGWARE TOWN HISTORY The club were founded in 1939 and played in the Middlesex Senior League until joining the Coronitian League in the 1946–47 season. In 1948 they won the Middlesex Senior Cup In 1963 the club transferred to Division One of the Athenian League. They finished third in their first season, and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1966– 67 they finished bottom of the division, and were relegated to Division One. This was followed by a second successive relegation to Division Two as they finished bottom of the table again. In 1972 the club was renamed Edgware. When the Athenian League disbanded in 1984 they joined the London Spartan League before changing their name back to Edgware Town in 1987. They won the Premier Division of the Spartan League in 1987–88 and 1989–90, and after their second title win, were promoted to Division Two North of the Isthmian League After league re-organisation in 1991 they were placed in Division Three, which they won the following season. They were relegated back to Division Three in 2001. In 2006 the now-renamed Division Two was disbanded and Edgware were transferred to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League. They won it at the first attempt, also winning the Premier Cup and the Challenge Trophy. The club was promoted to Division One North of the Isthmian League, but folded at the end of the 2007–08 season due to lack of funds. In 2014 a group including Dan and Antony

Manzi, Daz Bloor and Ken Batten secured the clubs inclusion back into non-league football. After a shaky start to the 2014-15 season, the wares finished a credible 9th and Middx Prem Cup Runners up after the management team of Michael Roche, Fabio Valenti and Peter Grant came in. The 2015-16 Season saw “The Wares” finish top with only 2 defeats, and lose in the Divisional Cup Final to Crawley Green. The ground, Silver Jubilee Park has achieved a C grade rating with 3 new stands, new floodlights and extended changing rooms and new perimeter fence. The Ken Batten Stand should be in place shortly and then SJP will have 2 seated stands, 3 standing covered stands with a capacity just shy of 2000. Fabio Valenti took over as 1st team manager in June 2016. Fergus Moore took over the team in 2017 after the departure of Fabio Valenti, and after a difficult start the team finished 10th which showed a marked improvement from the season before. The 2018-19 season was another midtable finish with Fergus pretty much on his own but towards the end of the season he was joined by Joe Pascoe who came over from the Hendon U18’s and that’s how the 201920 season will begin.

REPORTING IN

OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST POTTON UNITED With four weeks having passed since their previous league outing, Dunstable Town returned to SSML Premier Division action with a convincing win against Potton United. The opening stages of the game saw neither side get a real grip on the game, with no clear chances created, until Potton’s formerBlue Nathan Mullings had two shots in two minutes just before the quarter-hour. The first was dragged low and wide of the left post of Mackenzie Taylor’s goal, the second was put over the bar. From early on, it was clear that Mullings and teammate Kieran Hamilton were the men to watch for Town’s defence. But after an even start to the game, Dunstable took the lead in the twenty-fourth minute, when a beautifully floated free-kick from the right foot of Daniel Blackman found Evans Lamboh unmarked in the box. Sam Irish in the Potton goal stood no chance. On the half hour, Potton United had perhaps their clearest chance of the game so far, delivering a cross which Daniel Trif could only head away as far as their incoming striker, who could only fire a first-time volley wide of the goal. A let-off for Town. Blackman was again causing the Potton defence problems when he delivered a corner to the back post which was met with a firm header from debutant Kachi Njoku, but Irish was equal to it, and with Chris Stapleton following in, Irish had to make another closerange save before the ball was cleared away. With Andre Elliot off the field for a large period of the ten minutes prior to half-time due to a bloodied shirt, United looked to capitalise on

their numerical advantage, as well as a generous amount of added time, and created a couple of opportunities, the best of which saw a Sam Willis shot deflected wide. Four minutes into the second period, Dunstable extended their lead, with Davide Pobbe the man to give them much-needed breathing space. After a deep cross from the left was pulled back, Pobbe calmly slotted past Sam Irish. Minutes after going two goals behind, dangerman Kieran Hamilton picked the ball up on the edge of the Potton box, and a driving run saw him make it to the edge of the Dunstable box before being taken down by Adam Sawyer, who was booked for the challenge. The resulting free-kick, from a dangerous position, was put over the bar. The second half continued to be wellcontested, with Potton trying to get back into the game. Mullings was put through on goal, only to put his shot over the bar, shortly before Joshua Francis headed against the bar for the hosts. Dunstable Town created openings of their own, and managed the game well. Jack McCool made another late appearance from the bench after returning from a long-term injury, showing hunger and tenacity. After a hiatus from league duties, Dunstable Town have come back looking a more cohesive unit, with stand-out performances from Blackman, Jack Harvey, Lamboh and Njoku.

LOCAL NON-LEAGUE CHAT with Ollie Bayliss

For me, non-league football is all about the characters, their stories, and their journeys. Very few tales are better than that of football’s ultimate journeyman; Jefferson Louis. This week, at the age of 40, Louis made his debut for his 38th different team (39th if you count his international appearance for Dominica). Over the last 23 years, the powerful striker has played up and down the leagues, all across the country. His career began in 1996 at Risborough Rangers. After scoring for a handful of nonleague clubs his promising young career stalled when he was convicted of GBH and dangerous driving whilst disqualified, something he served six months in Woodhill Prison for. I spoke to Louis on the Non-League Show last season, he has few regrets over his long career and varied life, but he admitted to not making the best decisions in his younger days. He now uses his own life experiences to try and help others. He mentors kids who have been excluded from school, inspiring them to turn their lives around. When he was released from prison, football league side Oxford United offered him a contract following a successful trial. He scored 7 goals for the Third Division club but is perhaps best remembered when the live BBC cameras captured his naked backside celebrating the team’s FA Cup draw against Arsenal. He appeared as a sub at Highbury in the FA Cup as the Gunners won 2-0, something which would prove to be a career highlight.

A change in management at The U’s saw him move out on loan before departing at the end of the 2004 season. From there he journeyed through 16 different clubs before he found anywhere that felt enough like home to play more than 30 games. At the age of 29, over the Welsh border, Louis played a whole season at Wrexham. He reminisced fondly about how it was one of his favourite periods as a player. The fans sang his name and he broke a club record scoring in 10 straight games. For much of his career, Louis has been a gun for hire for various managers who bring him in when they’re short of goals. Looking at his strike record at several clubs, you can understand why. He dispatched 22 goals in 25 games at Hendon and 13 in 8 at Brackley Town to name two of his many successes. When I spoke to Louis, he said he only ever clicked with certain managers who made him feel like their main man. He hints at this relationship being one of the main make or break factors behind his time at the clubs. The other explanation is that he is never a player to sit on the bench or play for the reserves for long. Even at that age of 40, he has departed Chesham United to get more game time elsewhere. What’s clear is that above all else, Louis loves to be playing the game. The way he’s moved up and down and across the country, rearranging his life time and time again, is evidence enough of a man who just loves scoring goals. With no intention of slowing down, it’s very much 38 clubs and counting...

ON THIS DAY ...

21 SEPTEMBER 2003 - AND THE GUNNERS KEPT ROLLING ALONG On 21 September 2003, Arsenal preserved their unbeaten streak by the narrowest of margins, drawing 0-0 after a missed Manchester United penalty. When the Gunners arrived at Old Trafford, they were enjoying a modest seven-game unbeaten streak that stretched back to the last two matches of the previous season--a season that had ended with United beating Arsenal to the top of the final table after some heated confrontations between the two sides. In February 2003, Arsenal won a heated FA Cup contest over United in a match that saw a slew of yellow cards. Then, in April 2003, the teams played to a draw after Arsenal defender Sol Campbell received a straight red for an elbow to the face of United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Campbell missed the match on 21 September, but the emotions still ran high. The day’s first

yellow card went to United’s Roy Keane in the 21st minute, with seven more to follow. Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira was ejected in the 80th minute after receiving a second yellow for a confrontation with United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. In the 91st minute, the referee awarded United a penalty for Martin Keown’s challenge on striker Diego Forlan. Van Nistelrooy stepped up to take the kick, despite missing his previous two attempts. True to form, he slammed the ball against the bar, drawing an emotional taunt from Keown. The match ended as a scoreless draw and Arsenal proceeded to go undefeated for the remainder of the season.
