INSIDE THE BOARDROOM THIS BEING DUNSTABLE TOWN, THERE IS ALWAYS PLENTY GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES. WE DO NOT DO QUIET WEEKS! Before I say a bit more on that though, I‘d like to extend a very warm welcome this evening to the coaching, playing staff, supporters and Committee of Edgware Town. I hope they all have an enjoyable evening and a safe journey back to North West London after the final whistle. I wrote in the Supporters’ Newsletter that November would likely define our season and that opinion remains unchanged. We will look to be picking up three points from several of those games and move ourselves away from the relegation zone. However, November is still a few days away so a few words then about what has been going on behind the scenes. The search for new Committee members to help the Club achieve its aims has begun. We have been fortunate enough to add the marketing skills of Abby Slough to the team and her posters advertising the jobs have created plenty of interest in the vacancies we are looking to fill. Abby has teamed up well with our Digital Manager, Brad Cawthorne and between them they have plenty of ideas and plans on how to enhance our output on our various social media platforms. Matt Carrington has researched and been in touch with other clubs to learn how they have succeeded in turning two figure attendances into the several hundreds and we will have a go at replicating whatever has worked elsewhere.

Wayne Upton has transformed the prematch experience with his innovative use of computers although the loss of The Dropkick Murphys from the playlist troubles me greatly. Peter Bottom is pushing ahead with Fundraising initiatives which we will be announcing shortly. Peter has also been busy introducing new faces to the Club. There are some genuinely exciting times ahead of us but, in the short term, we face an unprecedented & extraordinarily uncertain period, largely due to the impact the Pandemic has had on local business’ and the loss of very nearly half the Club’s income from, commercial sponsorship, Junior Blues and the 50% reduction in FA prize money. However, there is still plenty to be grateful and thankful for. Club Membership is higher than last season, individual player sponsorships, match and match ball sponsorships have already exceeded last season’s totals, season ticket sales have held steady, attendances are up and membership of the 100 Club is growing slowly but surely. There will be a Fans Forum on zoom soon. If you would like to be in attendance please let me or any of the member of the committee know. After tonight’s match we travel to Tring who have also struggled for form so far this season, then we play Potton away on Tuesday 3rd November before entertaining Wembley at Creasey Park on Saturday 7th November.

EDGWARE TOWN

OPPOSITION SPOTLIGHT..

THE CLUB WERE FOUNDED IN 1939 AND PLAYED IN THE MIDDLESEX SENIOR LEAGUE UNTIL JOINING THE CORONITIAN LEAGUE IN THE 1946–47 SEASON In 1948 they won the Middlesex Senior Cup In 1963 the club transferred to Division One of the Athenian League. They finished third in their first season and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1966– 67 they finished bottom of the division and were relegated to Division One. This was followed by a second successive relegation to Division Two as they finished bottom of the table again.

In 2006 the now-renamed Division Two was disbanded and Edgware were transferred to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League. They won it at the first attempt, also winning the Premier Cup and the Challenge Trophy. The club was promoted to Division One North of the Isthmian League but folded at the end of the 2007–08 season due to lack of funds.

In 1972 the club was renamed Edgware. When the Athenian League disbanded in 1984, they joined the London Spartan League before changing their name back to Edgware Town in 1987. They won the Premier Division of the Spartan League in 1987–88 and 1989–90, and after their second title win, were promoted to Division Two North of the Isthmian League After league re-organisation in 1991 they were placed in Division Three, which they won the following season. They were relegated back to Division Three in 2001.

In 2014 a group including Dan and Antony Manzi, Daz Bloor and Ken Batten secured the clubs inclusion back into non-league football. After a shaky start to the 2014-15 season, the wares finished a credible 9th and Middx Prem Cup Runners up after the management team of Michael Roche, Fabio Valenti and Peter Grant came in.

6 - DUNSTABLE TOWN V EDGWARE TOWN

The 2015-16 Season saw “The Wares” finish top with only 2 defeats and lose in the Divisional Cup Final to Crawley Green.

CLUB INFO NICKNAME: The Wares FOUNDED: 1939 CAPACITY: 1,990 The ground, Silver Jubilee Park has achieved a C grade rating with 3 new stands, new floodlights and extended changing rooms and new perimeter fence. The Ken Batten Stand should be in place shortly and then SJP will have 2 seated stands, 3 standing covered stands with a capacity just shy of 2000. Fabio Valenti took over as 1st team manager in June 2016. Fergus Moore took over the team in 2017 after the departure of Fabio Valenti, and after a difficult start the team finished 10th which showed a marked improvement from the season before. The 2018-19 season was another midtable finish with Fergus pretty much on his own but towards the end of the season he was joined by Joe Pascoe who came over from the Hendon U18’s and that’s how the 2019- 20 season will begin.

MATCH REPORT HARPENDEN TOWN 4 - 5 DUNSTABLE TOWN Overall Dunstable had the better of the early exchanges but having survived the early Dunstable pressure, Harpenden came back strongly, and Dunstable needed the composure of Debayo and the safe hands of Gould to keep scores level. On 18 minutes an inviting cross from the right just needed a yellow shirt on the end of it to have given the hosts the lead but Harpenden did go ahead on 21 minutes following a mix up at the back enabling Jake Anthony to score the first goal of his hat trick. The question in the minds of the sizable Dunstable support was how the lads would react. Any anxieties on that score were quickly eased just ten minutes later when a defence splitting ball from George Mulonda was finished with precision by Chris Stapleton. It was a deserved equaliser and gave the lads the confidence to press forward in numbers. A superb piece of opportunism saw Tommy Twelves put Dunstable 2-1 up, and then up popped Joe Hankins on 38 minutes to put the Blues 3-1 up. Joe’s goal was the final act of a good team move engineered by Oladejo & Smith-Reid. Dan Gould pulled off an important save just before the break and just when you thought he’d done enough to keep a two goal cushion going into the break, Harpenden pulled one back from the spot in the dying seconds. Temi Oladejo put in an inviting corner at the start of the second half but a Blue head could only direct it out for a free kick. Moments later Harpenden were back on level terms with Dan Gould unable to prevent Mulik from equalising.

Heads did not drop, and the spirit of the team was evident even when Harpenden took the lead on the hour mark with Anthony claiming his hat trick. More goals seemed inevitable as both teams looked for the all-important next goal. Roy Byron was replaced by Marlon Burton and Gould again needed to be alert to keep out Harpenden. On 66 minutes Dunstable were back level. Chris Stapleton netting for the second time in the afternoon. The pass he received from Louis Octave out on the right and a full 35 yards away was perfection. 4-4 and with nearly 25 minutes plus stoppages left to play both teams pressed for the winner. Louis Octave needed to produce an important tackle when Gould’s goal was threatened. Evans Lamboh replaced George Mulonda, and on 81 minutes Dunstable had that little bit of luck which seems to have otherwise escaped them for most of the season. A seemingly impossible overhead kick from a Harpenden player rebounded off the bar into the grateful arms of Dan Gould. With time ticking down Khy Smith-Reid was replaced by Leonardo Pedro, and it was the latter who received an inch perfect cross from Evans Lamboh to head home sweetly and take all three points back to Creasey Park. A heavy challenge on Chris Stapleton saw him slump to the ground in the middle of the park clutching his head. Referee Coleman O’Meara beckoned Physio, Rebecca on, and with Chris still receiving treatment in the middle of the field, the referee blew his whistle for full time.

ON THIS DAY

27 OCTOBER 1944..

ON 27 OCTOBER 1944, CONSTRUCTION BEGAN AT REAL MADRID’S NEW STADIUM, THE NUEVO ESTADIO CHAMARTÍN Now known as the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, it is one of the world’s most famous football venues. The club had played previously at the old Estadio Chamartín, which was constructed in 1923 and held a crowd of 22,500. By 1944, however, club decided it needed a larger stadium to accommodate the growing supporter base. In June of that year, they purchased land next to their existing stadium and began planning the construction of the new one. The construction lasted just over three years, resulting in a new capacity of 75,145 (27,645 were seated, with the remainder on terraces). On 14 December 1947, Real Madrid inaugurated their new home with a match against Portuguese side Os Belenenses. The stadium has undergone several renovations over the years, at one point expanding to hold a partially seated crowd of 125,000. It has since

34 - DUNSTABLE TOWN V EDGWARE TOWN

been converted to an all-seater with a current capacity of 80,354. During that time, it has hosted important matches including four World Cup matches and the 2010 Champions League Final. In 1955, the club chose to rename it after the man who spearheaded its construction, former club president Santiago Bernabéu.
