DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

joe dee N ey

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all associated with Enfield FC ahead of tonight’s FA Vase game. In my opinion it’s as tough a draw as we could have got and one, I am really looking forward to. It’s a Friday night under the lights, so that’s something different and I look forward to welcoming a large crowd. I played for Enfield after departing Luton Town many years ago, so it’s a club I know well and one that is steeped in history. Enfield are currently clear at the top of the Essex Senior League on an 8-win run. Enfield arrive to the game off the back of a 6-0 win so it’s going to be a tough test for us all and one we must embrace and turn the poor fortunes of last week around. We come into the game on the back of a really poor week which has been tough to take. Losing games is always part of the journey as a manager and a team but the manner of the defeats has been so disappointing. I speak all the time about this term DNA I want to see from my teams. The basic pre-requisites are always you must first and foremost,

compete, fight and work like mad to keep the ball out of your net! We have come away from this in the last few weeks and it now needs to change.

Tuesday night we were much better in terms of performance against Moulton but still managed to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory. We started on the front foot, put them under pressure, were much braver in possession and took the lead through Issac Olaleye. It was Isaac’s first goal for the club, and I was delighted for him.

I felt like we were in complete control of the game and played some really good stuff. Their GK made some outstanding saves and the more saves he made the more I felt the inevitable would happen. Shortly after another good chance we had, it was unfortunately Moulton at the other end who equalised. A cross into the box, we don’t check our shoulders and they equalise.

We then restore our lead through a header from Joe Sellers-West and then I would have expected us to go and win

“i know we live in a modern world where saying things like “toughen up” may offend some people but we need to toughen up, it’s really that simple.”

the game. We then proceed to lose 2 goals in the closing stages! The manner of the goals again was infuriating. It has nothing to do with tactics, fitness, or anything else it comes down to sheer desire, nothing less than that. We don’t stop the ball into our box, their lad ghosts in off shoulders and scores to equalise.

The 3rd goal summed up the evening. We don’t get anywhere near enough pressure on the ball and the lad has time to hit a shot and we lose the game!

Since arriving here last season we were synonymous with being solid defensively, conceding zeros and ones and that’s how this season had been by in large. The last 2 games we have come away from that and been too much of a soft touch. The challenge now to the group is to find the minerals and the fortitude to fight back. You don’t buy that on Amazon. You have to look in the mirror, dig deep and take professional and personal pride to do our jobs. The bigger the fight the more I personally relish it and I am hopeful my lads will do the same.

I know we live in a modern world where saying things like “toughen up” may offend some people but we need to toughen up, it’s really that simple. Time for a few of our lads to stop maybe having aspirations of getting onto the next series of Love Island or whatever reality series is out there and start having aspirations of getting back to winning ways. We have some fantastic players with great attitudes, and it is our 1st proper setback, so there is no crisis but can become one if we don’t sort ourselves out NOW!

In the grand scheme of things, we have lost 1 league game and exited a cup competition we didn’t really need in all fairness but still I despise losing! That run needs to end and it needs to end this evening.

James Verney joins us from Berkhamsted and is an electric forward with pace and an excellent goal scoring record. I worked with James for several years at Luton Town and am delighted to be working with him again. He has a top attitude and is a game changer. I would like to thank Chris Devane for getting James registered so quickly.

Robbie Goodman brings a wealth of experience and is exactly the type of player and person we have been seeking in that area of the pitch. He has recently been with Leighton Town and last season was part of Newport Pagnell’s FA Vase winning team. Robbie is commanding, shows excellent leadership as well as bringing composure and experience to our back line.

They are the last of the additions, FOR NOW ANYWAY. It is now up to the group to ensure we don’t bring anymore in, The only way that will happen is if we do our jobs to the best of our ability and turn consistent performances in.

There is a misconception in football that managers don’t get on. I’m lucky to have some really good relationships with managers and there are some good ones around. Only a manager will ever understand that “bereavement period” a manager goes through after a loss. It sounds drastic but it is the truth.

The support from you all has been humbling and for that I thank you all. I assure you we will get through this sticky patch. The easiest way to do it is by rolling our sleeves up, toughening up and being hard to play against. We win together and lose together and that has been really evident from our supporters. Enjoy tonight’s game and keep that Creasey Roar coming.

he is willing to add to this number, albeit at a very slow pace!

Seeing the amount of work that we all put into making the club a success, we are lucky to have people like Erica in our lives supporting us when we need it. Whether its parents standing in the rain watching their children play, or partners happy to allow the coaches the time to analyse footage/plan tactics for the next match, we owe these people so much, which leads me to my own wife

A very good evening to you all tonight and, everyone involved with our visitors Enfield. Enfield currently sit top of the Essex Senior League, with only one league loss to their name this season, so undoubtedly, they will provide a stern test for Joe and the lads

The last week has been a stark reminder of how tough this level can be. However, in my opinion there isn’t a better coaching team around and when you consider how far the team has come over the last year, it’s incredible to think how we are all disappointed in losing just one league game!

When you listen to Joe’s post-match interview, on our Podcast “Talk of the Town” I would think it’s fair to say that no-one was more disappointed than him, but I have no doubt this will be a small blip in what will be a successful campaign for the club!

Regarding Joe, I just want to congratulate him and his wife Erica on the news that they are expecting a daughter. I have spoken in the past about how I want to grow gate attendances, so I’m grateful

You may see Jackie on the gate, selling merchandise, or keeping our guests happy in the boardroom, but what people may not see is the help she gives me behind the scenes. Whether it’s helping me with club accounts, taking money to the bank and even counselling services after matches, I genuinely couldn’t do it without her support. (Though I’m disappointed she wouldn’t allow us to postpone our 10th wedding anniversary holiday, in order to watch El Creaseyco on Tuesday)

Therefore, I would like to thank everyone who supports our players, coaches, and volunteers away from the game to help us achieve our overall goals.

Lastly, you may have noticed Andrew Madaras has been missing from recent games, as he has been recuperating from a short spell in hospital. On behalf of everyone, we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him getting back to Creasey soon.

Founded in August 1893 as Enfield Spartans by John Bruce Skinner the club spent their initial season playing friendlies. They entered their first league the Tottenham & District Junior Alliance for the season 1894-95. Moving to the larger Tucker’s Field they joined the North Middlesex League in 1896 which was won in 1901-02 and 1902-03 after which ‘senior’ status was attained. In 1900 the Spartans was dropped which was accompanied by a move to Cherry Orchard Lane in 1903 and they joined the London League (Div2) which was won in 1911 and promotion to the Premier Division. In 1912 Enfield FC was invited to become a founder member of the Athenian League and in 1913-14 the Middlesex Senior cup was won for the first time.

Football was suspended during WW1 and on resumption they spent a season in the Middlesex & London league before returning to the Athenian League in 1921 a championship that was not won until 1961-62 and was retained in 1962-63. In1934-35 Enfield finished second in the league reached the semifinals of the FA Amateur Cup and won the London senior Cup for the first time before moving to a new purpose-built stadium at Southbury Road in 1936.

The Athenian league was suspended during WWII although the E’s did compete in the Herts. & Middlesex Combination for a short period. In 1945 Jack Rawlings and Len West both gained international caps and Hendon were defeated 1-0 in the Middlesex Senior Cup final at White Hart Lane in 1959-60 England Amateur international

centre forward Tommy Lawrence netted a club record 49 goals in one season. In 1963 Enfield Hendon Hitchin and Sutton were invited to join the Isthmian League Enfield were particularly successful during this period as they finished champions on seven occasions including two hat tricks.

In 1966-67 and 1969-70 the FA Amateur Cup was won and there were further visits to the twin towers (Wembley) as they reached the 1963-64 and 1971-72 finals. Enfield also won the European Amateur Cup in 1970 and the Hitachi Challenge Cup in 1979 and 1980 as well as the Middlesex and London senior cups on numerous occasions. During this 1970s period Enfield defeated football league clubs, Wimbledon & Northampton Town in the FA cup.

Enfield joined the Alliance Premier League (Now Conference) in 1981-82 and found immediate success. Having finished runners up at the first attempt they went one better in 1982/83 by securing the championship on the last day of the season at the home of the previous champions Runcorn. This was won for a second time in 1985/86, but relegation overtook them in a disastrous 1989-90 campaign.

During the 1980s the FA Trophy was won in 1982 and 1988 with Lincoln City being beaten en route. Also, during this period Football League clubs Wimbledon (again) Hereford, Port Vale, Exeter & Orient all succumbed to Enfield in the FA Cup.

Enfield won the 1994-95 Isthmian league title by fourteen points and the following

season finished level on points but lost the title to Hayes on goal difference by just one goal 1996-97 season saw them finish runners up for a second successive season; But Enfield did have more FA Cup success during the 1990s defeating Aldershot, Torquay, Cardiff & Chesterfield.

The Southbury Road stadium was controversially sold for development in 1999, Decline set in and after struggling to preserve their Premier Division status during 1999-2000 & 2001-02 2003. The E’s were relegated for only the second time in their history at the end of the 2002-03 season followed by a second successive relegation in 2003-04 into division 2. Enfield was being run by a new committee from November 2003 as they started the long hard journey to remove the club from the former owners failed business.

The new committee that came into the club during the 2003/04 season had a successful first season in Ryman division 2 which saw the E’s win promotion into the Southern League East division 1 with a mid table finish secured.

Season 2006/07 saw the E’s moved back to Ryman division 1 with another mid table finish. But another cruel twist forced the E’s to resign and rename as

Enfield 1893 FC after the fight to remove the club from the former owners debt was lost and E’s found themselves in the Essex senior League. The E’s finished season 2007/08 level on points but as in the 1994/95 season lost out on goal difference.

Hoping to go one better than in 2008/09 The E’s finished second again and reached the final of the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy losing 3-1, For the 2009/10 season Enfield moved closer to the Borough of Enfield by ground sharing at Broxbourne Borough FC after a run in the FA Cup that ended in defeat by Conference South highflyers Chelmsford City the season petered out with Enfield finishing fourth in the League.

A twist of fate in February 2010 saw Brimsdown Rovers who were struggling financially, contacted the Enfield Board to let them know that Brimsdown Rovers FC would be resigning from the Spartan South Midland League at the end of the 2009/10 season to field only youth teams from the 2010/11 season onwards and also to see if they would be interested in moving back into the Borough to play at Goldsdown Road.

In their first season back in the borough at Goldsdown Road they reached the

League cup final losing to Stansted FC and becoming the Essex Senior League champions but were denied promotion to step four due to the Goldsdown Road ground not meeting certain criteria. The 2011/12 season hopes were they would go one better than last season by winning the league and gaining promotion to step 4 but after a good run in the FA Vase to the fourth round the season fell away and they finished in seventh place in the league. In the 2012/13 season they finished 9th in the league & a good run in the FA Vase to the fourth round again. The 2013/14 season was a good one finishing in 3rd spot with 91pts, the winning team had 92pts & going out in the 2nd round of the FA Vase. Under a new management team in the 2014/15 season & moving to the Harlow Arena, because Brimsdown didn’t meet ground grading they finished disappointing in 16th position & going out in the 1st round of the FA Vase.

The 2015/16 saw a change of management again & finishing in 20th position & going out in 1st qualifying round of FA Vase.

A new groundshare was entered with Bishop’s Stortford in 2019 to play at Woodside Park.

The 2019/2020 & 2020/2021 seasons were not completed due to the Covid pandemic. The 2021/2022 season saw Enfield finished 5th in the Essex Senior League whilst also reaching the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. they also won the Errington Challenge Cup, beating Cockfosters 3-2 at Great Wakering FC.

Dunstable Town’s Walking Football team recorded their first victory under the Creasey Park lights last week against a new team from Milton Keynes. Dunstable dominated the opening exchanges, pinning their opponents into their defensive third for the majority of the period. Leading 2-0 going into the second period of 20 minutes, Milton Keynes came back into the game with some neat football and clinical finishing bringing the score back to 3-2.

However, Dunstable re-found their organization and began to stretch their lead in the final 20 minutes, taking advantage of some mistakes from MK and using their experience to finish with a 10-2 victory.

Our best wishes to our opponents for the remainder of the season, and once again, many thanks to the Asda Foundation for acting as our kit sponsor. DTFC Walking Football Team forms part of the Club’s Improving the Lives

of Others initiative which underpins our Community Benefit Society model of fan ownership.

We provide three separate Walking Football groups to cater for anyone regardless of age, (dis)ability & gender. All groups are free to join and participate.

the pieman (@_therealpieman) is a tottenham hotspur fan who has attended thousands of matches and hundreds of grounds throughout the united kingdom and europe. this week he visits leamington fc.

Royal Leamington Spa is a town in Warwickshire. Originally a small village called Leamington Priors, it grew as a spa town in the 18th century, following the popularisation of its water which was reputed to have medicinal qualities. The name comes from the River Leam, which flows through the town which is situated around 9 miles south of Coventry. Leamington Spa railway station is served by the Chiltern Main Line which links London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill.

The football club was established in 1933 as the works team of Lockheed Borg & Beck, gaining the nickname “the brakes” due to the products manufactured. Initially they played in the Warwick & District League before progressing to the Coventry Works League. In 1947 the club became Lockheed Leamington and subsequent name changes saw the club become AP Leamington prior to folding in 1988. The

club was reactivated in 2000 and joined the Midland Combination. Subsequent promotions via the Midland Alliance and the Southern League, resulted in the club reaching National League North in 2013. Relegation back to the Southern League in 2015 was followed by promotion to National League North again in 2017.

The journey via the M25 and M1 was swift once we had got onto the former. We arrived at the New Windmill Ground around 13:30 and parked in the spacious car park. This allowed plenty of time to

42 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs ENFiELD

take photographs of the ground. The stewards were welcoming and took the time to explain where everything was. We were soon adjourning to the clubhouse for pre match refreshment. On entering the spacious clubhouse, this Pieman was delighted to see real ale on offer from the local Church Farm Brewery. Both options were in fine condition. Harry’s Heifer (4.2%) is a “quaffable session ale with a hoppy aroma. Brewed with a blend of Marris Otter, Vienna, and Crystal Malts, with Centennial and Cascade Hops”, IPA (5.0%) “Brewed with Citra and Crystal Hops, Easy drinking, yet full of flavour”

I was impressed with both brews and at half time purchased a box of four bottles of Church farm offerings.

I was impressed with everything about this ground, the folks at the club have clearly worked hard to get it to the required standard for this level of football and you sense their pride. There is covered seated accommodation along both sides of the ground. At the clubhouse end there is a covered terrace. This is also where the bulk of the impressive array of flags are displayed. The other end of the ground is open but is also terraced. An electronic scoreboard is situated in a corner at this end. There is so much more to the ground, a well-stocked club shop, a separate

programme shop and two refreshment options. The traditionally burger van, selling some very tasty looking fayre and the tea bar which doubles as as a sweet shop. This was an intriguing match to watch with both sides giving their all. The visitors were worthy of their half time lead and the goal from Michael Coulson was a fine strike. It will have been interesting to hear what Leamington manager Paul Holleran said to his troops during the break as the home side were transformed from the start of the second period. The reward came when Adam Walker levelled on 50 minutes. From this pointed it looked as if the home side would go on to score again, but gradually Scarborough came back into the match and could have won it. In the end, I believe most would agree that a draw was a fitting result for this match, played in good spirit.
