the manager

joe deeney “I must thank Barnet, Hertford Town, Lincoln City, Winslow United and last but not least Luton Town for playing us in pre-season and providing such tough tests.”

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all attached from Great Wakering Rovers ahead of today’s FA Cup clash. A welcome back to all our fantastic supporters for our first competitive fixture at home of the new season. We come into the game off the back of an excellent result on Tuesday night away at Potton United. I was delighted with the result and really proud of the players. We have had an excellent pre-season in terms of preparation, and I must thank our wonderful group of Directors for affording us an excellent facility to train on throughout pre-season. Every club and manager will have different ways of doing pre-season. Some do a lot of fitness and running, some play loads of games and some do a mixture of everything. The club invested in us having a full-size pitch throughout the pre-season where we were able to get 2

loads of shape, structure, and fitness into the players so that everyone knew how we played. We chose to have very competitive games to ensure we didn’t create a false economy of winning preseason games easily and ultimately getting found out when the season began. Fair credit to all our players they worked incredibly hard doing their individual plans throughout the close season that allowed us to accelerate things in pre-season. I was really pleased with the fitness levels, coach-ability of the group and desire and grit we showed on Tuesday evening. Potton are a good side with good players, and I would imagine will be up towards the top end of the table throughout the season. We looked organised, stuck to the game plan and were ruthless in the big moments of the game that led to a 2-0 win. I continue to learn as a manager that unfortunately

great-wakering-print.indd 2

no matter how meticulous we prepare, things do change and we always have to adapt. We picked up a host of injuries in the last week to key players and then lost our captain Jamie Nicholls 10 minutes before kick-off on Tuesday night. It speaks volumes of the group how we were able to adjust, adapt and ultimately win the game and just further highlights the critical importance of having squad depth. We are hopeful at the time of writing that we will have a couple back in time for the FA Cup opener today. We are delighted with the win, 3 points and the clean sheet but we are certainly not getting carried away. It is 1 league win and that is all. We know that with the competitive teams in our division this season we will need to be able to turn in consistent performance’s week in and week out if we are to be successful. Will it be pretty every week? No! Will it be an easy watch every week? No! Does it bother me if we win? I will let you make your mind up on that question! Every manager says it, but we genuinely mean it when we say how much the support makes a difference to the group. I was proud of how many Dunstable Town fans attended our league opener on Tuesday night and more importantly I was once again proud of the behaviour of our supporters. We found Potton United’s committee, staff, and players all very welcoming people and must thank them for their hospitality. The game was competitive, 2 teams trying to win, and I felt played in a very good spirit. Unfortunately, a small number of Potton United “supporters” need to perhaps reflect on their behaviour when supporting their team. I am a thickskinned individual, as are our players and fair credit to my players for the way they handled themselves to some

horrendous abuse when exiting the pitch and the person that threw his pint of beer at Kelvin and Isaac. I am always humbled by the feedback I get from visitors to Creasey Park and the warmth in which they are treated. Please can we ensure that we continue to support our players through good and bad just as you have done so remarkably throughout last season. I am certainly no angel in the dugout, I am like my staff and players passionate, enthusiastic, and incredibly driven to win! The group of players we have assembled are all here for the right reasons. They are a fantastic group of people who emotionally invest into the club and stick by each other which is all we can ever ask. Of course, we will have good times and horrible times, but we are in it together. Our first non-negotiable is maximum effort is always the minimum expectation and our lads have certainly shown that over the last 6 weeks. Today offers a real tough test against a Great Wakering Rovers side that play a level above us. We will need to replicate Tuesday’s performance if we want to progress to the next round. I hope everyone has an enjoyable day back at Creasey Park however my big hope is that it is us in the next round of the FA Cup. I am sure the game will be competitive with 2 teams desperately trying to win and hope it provides a good watch for the supporters, as long as we win! Enjoy the game and thank you to you all for your continued support.

andrew madaras “It’s hugely disappointing that for the third consecutive season the Football Association have kept the prize money in the early rounds at half the amount they were before Covid.”

It’s a huge privilege to welcome the coaching, playing staff, committee, and supporters of Great Wakering Rovers FC to this afternoon’s Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie. Our opponents play at Step 4 in the Isthmian League North Division and are based 6 miles east of Southend-on-Sea and have travelled 80 miles or so for this afternoon’s match. We hope they enjoy their afternoon with us and have a safe journey home come the final whistle. I’m not trying to be controversial, but it’s really disappointing that clubs at this stage of the competition must travel such long distances. There is a very valid argument to make these early matches in the Cup regionalized and do away with long journeys. More localized matches would mean higher attendances, cut down on travelling expenses and help reduce our 6

carbon footprint. If today’s match is drawn the replay will be on Tuesday 9th August at Great Wakering. It’s asking a huge amount of players to get time off from work at such short notice and possibly not get home until 1am if the replay goes to extra time and penalties. It’s also hugely disappointing that for the third consecutive season the FA have kept the prize money in the early rounds at half the amount they were before Covid. The prize money for the competition is heavily weighted in favour of the bigger clubs, particularly those in the Premier League. Our friends at Lewes FC have made a very balanced and wellargued case for the prize money to be redistributed more equitably and their case be can read in an article later in this programme

During the summer we held our first AGM as a Community Benefit Society. Over half the Club’s 105 owners took part in the voting, and elected Peter Bottom, Kristy Lewington and Dan Roberts to become Directors, re-elected Gary, Matt & myself as Directors, and decided the cost of season tickets and Gold Owners packages. Democracy in action. We’ve added a fifth group to our list of free activities. Every alternate Wednesday we provide 30 minutes of Walking Football for the service-users of the Townsend Day Centre in Houghton Regis. John Greener runs this group on behalf of the Club and joins the band of Club volunteers. Another Club volunteer new to the ranks is Canadian citizen, Jeffrey Roy who accepted the post of International Supporters Ambassador. Jeffrey will be linking in with our existing overseas owners as well as promoting the Club in North America. The Local Offy in Lowther Rd have become our First Team shorts sponsor and Hamberley Care Homes have become the sponsors of the First Team substitutes’ jackets. On the playing side we’ve recruited into areas where Joe & Kyle felt we needed to have greater strength and depth. You don’t need me to tell you there were games last season where we struggled with other teams’ tactics and when injuries struck key players going into the last part of the season, we really missed them.

queries from players wanting trials. Matt reported the same thing through the social media channels. I can’t guarantee success this season, but what I can assure you is that every single player wearing the shirt will give 100%. Joe’s forensic analysis of each players’ strengths and weaknesses, each goal scored and conceded, his preparation for each opponent we face, will mean no stone has been left unturned in terms of match preparation. Next Saturday we face Tring Athletic at home. Kick off is 3pm. It’s a local derby we always look forward to. Last season we won both games and kept two clean sheets. We’ll be hoping that history repeats itself. Joe, Kyle, Jammers, and the players often say that you guys are the 12th man and the atmosphere here at Creasey Park really lifts them, so be loud, be proud and let’s see the boys into the next round. Thanks as always for your incredible support.

Andrew Madaras

It’s testimony to Joe’s standing in the game that recruitment has been as successful as it has been. This will be my 6th season as Club Secretary and my inbox has never been as busy with DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME great-wakering-print.indd 7

Great Wakering Rovers The club was formed in 1919 by soldiers demobbed after World War I and finding employment in the local brickfields. Not much in memory remains of the early years of the club although the club do possess some wonderful pictures from around that period. We first played in one of Southend’s oldest leagues, the Southend & District League, where the Rovers stayed until 1982. Rovers were the leagues most dominant clubs, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and to this day remain so on record. The switch in 1982 saw the club move to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but sadly this league folded in 1989 leaving Rovers with a decision to move back to the Southend & District League or take a step up in standard. With what most Rovers feel to be the best squad amassed by a manager, in this case Eddie Nash, Rovers took the decision to step up to intermediate level and joined the Essex Intermediate League. Rovers remained in the Essex Intermediate League for three seasons, winning the championships of Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons. After the latter, Rovers successfully applied to join the Essex Senior League and found themselves in Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid, which for a village club was a tremendous feat. In the 1994-1995 season Rovers narrowly beat Sawbridgeworth Town FC for the Essex Senior League title. Rovers had collected 71 points for the season and lost just three times although the title win was only won on goal difference (18). During that season Rovers

forward Paul Flack scored 28 goals, which included a haul of 4 goals away at Eton Manor as Rovers celebrated a 9-0 victory. Also included in his stunning season were two further hattricks. That season his strike partner Neil Ramsey grabbed 20 goals as Rovers hit home 82 goals. Rovers defence of the Essex Senior crown would falter the following season, finishing 2nd behind Romford. In the 1996-1997 season Rovers would also finish second again, behind Ford United by just three points. The 1997-1998 season would be Rovers worst season in the Essex Senior League, finishing mid-table, 7th, and 36 points behind winners Concord Rangers. The club’s final appearance in the Essex Senior League saw them finish 2nd behind Bowers United. However, due to Bowers United failing to meet ground grading requirements for promotion, Rovers were promoted to the Isthmian League in their place. With Isthmian League Division Three on the horizon for the 1999-2000 season, Rovers move into Step 4 of the pyramid was complete. At the first attempt Rovers were promoted to Division Two finishing behind East Thurrock Utd by three points. Promotion to Division Two gave Rovers some stiffer opposition and the season finished with Rovers in mid-table. In 2002 the Isthmian League then reorganised and Rovers found themselves in a new look Division One North, finishing mid-table but more than holding their own in what was a very competitive league. In 2003 the club

were embroiled in a relegation fight, although this was won convincingly as Rovers finished 15 points ahead of the relegation zone. A further league reorganisation in 2004 saw the club switch to the Southern Football League Eastern Division for two seasons. The 2004-2005 season saw Rovers miss relegation by one point due to Erith & Belvedere FC being deducted three points, but in the 2005-2006 season Rovers bounced back to finish safely in mid-table. For the 2006-2007 season Rovers found themselves in familiar territory, switching back to the Isthmian League Division One North, where we finished 12th. Two further seasons saw Rovers finish 13th and stabilise themselves as a Ryman League club. The 2009-2010 season brought a record number of points for the Rovers at Ryman League level, 64, but towards the end of the season manager Iain O’Connell was offered the management of Ryman Premier League side Margate leaving assistant Ryan Wilkinson and physio Cleve Taylor to take over temporary control with 12 games to go. In a season that saw Rovers top the table for 9 weeks, the dizzy heights would eventually get to O’Connell’s side 12

H

w1-2 a

w3-1 h

as they finished in 9th place, 13 points behind the playoffs. Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor would be implemented as joint-managers for the 2010-2011 season and their first season in charge would offer up 44 points and 15th place in the league. Their start to the 2011-2012 season wasn’t what they had hoped and after one win in their opening nine games, both offered their resignations. Rovers made first team coach Danny Heath caretaker manager and he brought temporary stabilisation back to the side as they recorded two wins and three draws from his seven games in charge. Rovers would offer the management post to Danny Greaves, son of exTottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves. Danny saw that a clean sweep of the side was required and let go most of the squad, bringing in loanees whilst trying to sign up new players. Unfortunately, this plan didn’t work and after a miserable run of six losses in a row, he too offered his resignation. Rovers would offer ex-Captain and stalwart Dan Trenkel the position as manager in November 2011 in an effort to stabilise the club. However, Trenkel was playing for Redbridge FC at the time who were on a fantastic run in the FA

Great Wakering Rovers Cup, and it would be two weeks before he would be unveiled at the club, Danny Heath taking temporary control again, although this time losing both games. Trenkel would bring back a number of players previously released by Danny Greaves and opened his management career with a 2-2 draw at home to Waltham Forest, followed by a 1-1 draw at home to Harlow Town. However, although the side were performing better, results would continue to go against him and after just three wins in the remaining 21 games, including 6 draws, Rovers would find themselves bottom of the table and staring relegation into the Essex Senior League. In 2014, they won the ESL by one point on the final day of the season and were promoted back to the Isthmian League. 2016/17 season was probably the most turbulent the club has ever experienced. Seeing two Chairman leaving their posts, together with two Managers also losing their jobs. In total 71 players were used in the fight against relegation without any success. As we were finally relegated after two seasons at step 4 returning to the Essex Senior League. Manager Iain O’Connell, in his second spell with the club has been working hard during the summer to put together a strong squad and to lay down the foundation to mount a serious challenge for promotion to enable Great Wakering Rovers to get back to Step 4 in the FA pyramid the club expects, they went on to win the league at the first attempt, earning promotion back to the renamed North Division of the Isthmian League.

match report It’s been a few years since we’ve won a League game on the opening day of the season. Six years to be precise. Cambridge City were the vanquished, in what proved to be the last season before the Club became fan run in 2017. A lot of water has flowed under a lot of bridges in that time and the Club is unrecognisable from that period. Even in those days a Bank Holiday derby away at Hitchin might persuade 25 or 30 Dunstable fans to follow their team away from home. On Tuesday night at the Hollow, the Blues were supported by 45 fans (yes, I am sufficiently sad to do a headcount!), in what I believe was the Club’s largest away following since Aylesbury in January this year. Given that Potton is hardly “round the corner” and on a midweek evening, the support for Joe and the team was an indication of the positive vibe and renewed interest in the team that currently surrounds Creasey Park The cheers from the away support were jubilant when on the hour, Tolu Ikuyinminu ran almost the length of the pitch, cut inside & audaciously sent the ball high over the head of the Potton keeper to put the Blues two up and ultimately secure the three points. Injuries to Liam McCrohan & Joe Sellers-West in the final pre-season friendly away at the Brache on Saturday gave the pre-season sharpshooters, Kelvin Osei-Addo & Remell Stirling, the numbers 9 and 10 shirts. Neither betrayed the faith shown in them with Kelvin silencing the boo boys with a

well-taken goal on 37 minutes. For his troubles he got showered with beer from a fan from behind the goal. The pass from Kyle Davison-Gordon out on the left was inch perfect. Kelvin brought the ball down on his chest, advanced beat his man and slid the ball past the advancing keeper. There were some immense personal performances, but truth be told all the players played their part in a fine team victory. The man of the match award was finally awarded to Ethan Creary with Benji Crilley running him a very close second. In goal, Connor Coulson did everything that was expected of him. Late on in the game he dived high to his left to keep a goal bound shot out. He was confident all night with his handling and kicking and patrolled his area and beyond with constant encouragement for the players in front of him. The midfield engine room was relentless all evening. Snapping at the heels of their opponents, breaking up the play and doing the basic things in coordinated and well-rehearsed manner. Behind them J’Ardell Stirling marshalled the defensive backline using all his Step 3 experience to successfully limit the number of direct shots on goal Connor Coulson needed to deal with. The fans appreciated the performance and the victory and warmly applauded the players off the pitch. This is going to be a long season and there will be plenty of ups and downs but a clean sheet, two well-taken goals, and three points is not a bad way to start.

Stuart Fuller is the creator of the award winning website ‘The Ball Is Round’. He has written a number of football books including ‘Passport To Football’, ‘Dripping Yarns: A Season with Lewes FC’ and ‘The Football Tourist’.

lewesfc.com/football-for-good/equal-prize-money-campaign/ Equal FA Cup Campaign The FA Cup is one of the world’s most famous sporting competitions. But after 150 years, is it time for a reboot? The Problem Football is perceived as wealthy. However, this wealth is concentrated in the highest tier of men’s football, not across the whole football ecosystem of men’s and women’s football. Fans and clubs want to see this wealth more fairly distributed to further support not just women’s football but also men’s lower league and non-league football. Both are struggling financially. Grants are welcome, but they want the opportunity to earn more revenues for themselves. In the FA Cup, prize money is so low for women’s teams that participation actually leads to them LOSING money, as costs exceed prizes offered. And for 38

men’s non-league and lower league teams, though not as bad, the prize funds available in the early stages of the competition are also very low. The total FA Cup fund for the men’s competition is around £16m. For women, it’s about £430,000. This is an imbalance that needs to end. This huge disparity now stands out amongst the world’s major sporting competitions, most of which now allocate prize money equally. FA Cup prize money mostly goes to those who need it the least. The final three rounds of the men’s competition are allocated 45% of the entire prize pot. And invariably that money is won by Premier League teams. Indeed, they typically receive 67% of the entire prize fund. Shall we fix it? Once and For All? The Solution: Lewes FC has devised two possible models of prize redistribution, to fairly

DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Great Wakering Rovers

great-wakering-print.indd 38

05/08/2022 17:16:21

reward women’s teams and men’s lower league & non-league too. To make the FA Cup truly ‘For All’.

Or, EQUITY: Full 50/50 allocation of the prize fund between the women’s and men’s FA Cup.

Reallocation

Both routes also have an element of ‘weighting’ by Round to maintain the traditional increases in prize money to reward progression through the competitions. And both routes would still see men’s non-League and lower league clubs financially better off too.

No need to increase the total FA Cup prize fund, just treat it as one pot and ensure that it is distributed in a way that maximizes revenue opportunities for women’s teams and men’s lower and non-league clubs. Increase in the prize funds in the earlier rounds of the men’s FA Cup, and across the entire women’s FA Cup. Transformation An injection of thousands of pounds to women’s clubs and men’s non-league teams will make a huge difference to the money they can invest in infrastructure and developing their players. This will greatly accelerate the growth of the women’s game and give added financial protection to men’s clubs. Transparency Wouldn’t it make sense for fans and clubs to see exactly HOW the prize funds for the FA Cup are decided? A transparent and consistent formula for allocating prize funds will bring stability of planning for the FA and greatly increase trust from fans and clubs alike. Restitution Women’s football was banned by the FA between 1921 and 1971. At the time of the ban, bigger crowds attended women’s games than men’s games. The ban robbed women’s football of at least 50 years of development and saw all the cultural attention and economic rewards go to men’s football. Lewes FC has identified two possible routes for a fair reallocation: EQUALITY: Equal Prize fund Per fixture (PPF), so whether you are a men’s or women’s team in your respective Cup round, you know that winning (or losing) that match will earn you the same.

The PPF route would fix things from now on. But the 50/50 route would see women’s teams getting more than men’s teams (as around three times as many men’s teams than women’s would share the same total) in order to boost investment into the women’s game so it could regain lost ground more quickly. Here’s what we believe our two solutions will achieve: • Fairer distribution of prize money reflecting the FA’s ‘For All’ remit. • Transformational sums of money going to women’s and non-league clubs, accelerating club & player development. • Creating an FA Cup that will be a beacon for equity and fairness in sport worldwide. • Signalling to fans and clubs that English football wants to be the leader when it comes to gender equality and not follow. • Inspiration for thousands of female footballers that they matter and their future is taken seriously. “This last season saw us get to the second round proper. We got just over £2k in winnings. So, when Lewes pointed out to me that under their PPF system we would have won nearly £50k, that’s just mind blowing. It would mean that we would be able to provide a lot more in terms of coaching, and different teams. There are so many more girls looking to get into football locally and we just don’t have the opportunity to provide for them.” Lee Martin - Chairman

The Pieman (@_TheRealPieMan) is a Tottenham Hotspur fan who has attended thousands of matches and hundreds of grounds throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. This week he visits Bournemouth FC

Bournemouth is a coastal resort town in Dorset. With Poole to the west and Christchurch in the east, Bournemouth is part of the South East Dorset conurbation. The town centre has notable Victorian architecture and the 202-foot spire of St Peter’s Church, one of three Grade 1 listed churches in the borough, is a local landmark. In the 12th century. The region around the River Bourne was part of the Hundred of Hoddenhurst. The Hundred later became the Liberty of Westover when it was extended to include the settlements of North Ashley, Muscliff, Muccleshell, Throop, Ilford, Pokesdown, Tuckton and Wick, now incorporated into the Manor of Christchurch. Bournemouth has two universities: Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth, both of which are located across the boundary in neighbouring Poole.

1875 at a meeting held at Abbotts Auction Mart in Old Christchurch Road. In 1988 the club changed their name to Bournemouth Dean Park. A further change of name to Bournemouth FC came in 1889, when the club merged with local side Bournemouth Arabs and moved grounds a season later to Victoria Park. In 1896 the club became a founder member of the Hampshire League. Whilst in Bournemouth I was able to enjoy the delights of two Micropubs

other structures at the ground with both ends being open to the elements.

where they brew on the premises. The first of these is the Poole Hill Brewery where I enjoyed Stroller, an Oatmeal Stout (4.6%) followed by Headlander Bitter (4.2%). Just a short walk away was the Brewhouse & Kitchen where I delighted in Churchill’s Fall (4.0%), a traditional caramel bitter. This was followed by Supermac (5.0%), an amber ale. All the beers brewed at the establishment are named after significant facts relating to Bournemouth. The latter being Ted MacDougall for his nine goals against Margate in an FA Cup tie and the former, for when Winston Churchill suffered a nasty fall whilst in the area.

I had received a warm friendly welcome with the officials manning the gate. This match pitted struggling Bournemouth against mid table Hamble Club, from the Southampton area. Although the visitors were ahead early in the match the home side drew in confidence and had spells when they were in the ascendency. That said the opposition could have added to their tally before the break. The second period was a very open affair, and the final score did not flatter Hamble Club. In the latter stages of the match, the home side fashioned several chances and although they only scored once, there was enough to suggest that on another day they would fare better. It was nice to watch a match in sunshine if a little breezy. My journey back to London involved a rail replacement from Bournemouth to Southampton Airport Parkway Station before the connection to London Waterloo.

It takes around 45 minutes to walk from the railway station to Victoria Park, significantly longer for me on this occasion as I was walking from the Poole Hill area in town. The entrance to the ground is tucked away at the very end of Namu Road and is enclosed by residential housing on three sides. In the immediate vicinity of the ground, I did not see any public houses or eating establishments. The clubhouse building, incorporates the changing rooms and refreshment facilities, including a licenced bar. As part of this structure, there is also a covered seated stand. Immediately opposite are the dugouts. There are no
