inside the boardroom After a three week break it’s a good feeling to be back at Creasey Park for this evening’s match against League newcomers, Hadley FC. We wish everyone associated with Hadley a very warm welcome, an enjoyable evening and a safe journey home at the final whistle. For the past couple of seasons Hadley have played in the Essex Senior League but the recent re-structure of the non-league pyramid have seen them make a welcome return to the Spartan South Midland League. They’ve made a good start to the season. Four wins out of four, including a very impressive four nil away win in front of a big crowd at Saffron Waldon Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. At time of going to print, Hadley sit 3rd in the League table having won their opening matches v Crawley Green & Flackwell Heath. It’s difficult to know where to start with our form. We had a good pre-season with Gareth & Anthony working trojan-like behind the scenes to put together a competitive squad having lost so many players during the Spring & Summer months. Pre-season results were very promising, but through a combination of injuries, Covid and a conspiracy of the fates, we lost our way in the opening matches against MK Irish & North Greenford Utd. The coaching staff & players have taken it on the chin and have responded well to the additional training time the three weeks lay off has afforded us. There’s been a huge amount of excitement in the camp with the news that former skipper and “Leader of Men” John Sonuga has returned to the Club. Another “old boy” returning is Manny Richardson who last played for us in the 2008 –

2009 season before going on to play at Arlesey, Bedford Town & Biggleswade Utd. Manny is joined by Bobby Armstrong from London Colney. Bobby is a “one club man” having spent his career at London Colney, making just under 200 appearances for the Club. Our Community Benefit Society (CBS) activities continue at pace. Patrick Mackay started the Tuesday evening Walking group. The walks start at 6.30 pm from Creasey Park and are free to join. Local MP, Andrew Selous, joined a session of our Walking Football group last week and was joined by Deputy Mayor, Liz Jones and Lisa Bird, Head of Grounds and Environment Services. All three were very interested in the Club’s social enterprise model and how we are already helping local communities. In two days time on Thursday 2nd September our new U18’s play their first game of the season here at Creasey Park against National League North side, Brackley Town in the Preliminary Round of the FA Youth Cup. Kick off is at 7.45pm. Admission is just £3 for Adults, £2 for Concessions with U16’s Free. Please come down and support the lads. Finally, a word of thanks to James Slack and his team for giving us permission to bring back Clovis Welch & his team from Jamaica Mi Crazy. Clovis will be back for the home game v Harpenden Town on Saturday 18th September. Please vote with your wallets and support both Clovis and the Creasey Park bar and food counter. For this scheme to continue it needs to be economically viable for both parties.

opposition spotlight

The 1880’s and 1890’s were glamour times for Hadley when the club used to attract crowds of several hundred to Hadley common. Hadley Football Club were founded in the 1882/83 season. A notable achievement during the early years was a 1-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur, although Tottenham then was not of the calibre that it is now. The 1880’s and 1890’s were glamour times for Hadley when the club used to attract crowds of several hundred to Hadley common. With regret however, the progressive Barnet FC etc. drew players away from Hadley. This was at about the turn of the century. Club activities became low key around 1912 with Barnet FC becoming more prominent. Between these years and 1922 the club was up and down like a yo yo. Club fortunes again changed close to World War II and thereafter, with the emergence from the Hadley ranks of the famous Lester Finch who went on to play for Barnet FC and become a full amateur international. Records show an upturn in Hadley FC activities after World War II. The club became a member of the Barnet and District League and, from about 1947, played

at Wrotham Park at the Barnet end of Kitts End Road. Hadley played there until about 1955 when it then moved to Barnet Playing Fields in order to “have some better facilities”. The club played in the North Suburban Intermediate League at this time. Still playing at Barnet Playing Fields, the club then joined the Mid Herts League and with Peter Gray as 1st team manager, we were Premier Division Winners in 1975/76 and 1976/77. We also won the Mid Herts Premier Division Shield in 1976/77. Having won the Mid Herts Premier Division twice, the club wanted to progress to the Herts Senior County League so therefore moved to a pitch with better facilities in St. Albans Road, Barnet (current home of The Shire London Golf Club). We had one season at this pitch before being told that it was no longer available to hire. We won the Herts Senior County League Division Three at our first attempt during this season. However,

The club left the Herts Senior County League to join the Southern Olympian League and moved grounds again to play at the Woodside Park Club, Southover, Totteridge. In 1992 the club moved to a ground in Brickfield Lane, Arkley, Barnet and re-joined the Herts Senior County League in the 1999/00 season. Under the management of Ian Gray, the 1st team won the Division One championship in 2001/02 to move up to the Premier Division in 2002/03, where we finished mid-table. Mick Hore was appointed manager in 2003/04 and we enjoyed a very successful season with the 1st team winning the Herts Senior County League Premier Division and the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy. 2004/05 was also very successful with the 1st team retaining the Premier Division title. Success continued into 2005/06 with the 1st team winning the prestigious Aubrey Cup. In 2006-07 the 1st team finished Runners Up in the Herts Senior County League Premier Division. South Midlands league was blocked by the Herts County League, so the following season (2007-08) the club played all of its football in the West Herts Saturday League. During this season, all Hadley teams (3 teams) won their respective leagues for the first time in the clubs history. This included the 1st team winning the Premier Division of the West Herts League with Guy Slee in charge, having taken over from Mick Hore at the start of the season. We again applied to join the Spartan South Midlands League and our place in Division Two was accepted for the start of the 2008-09 season. The move to the Spartan South Midlands League saw the 1st team begin groundsharing at Potters Bar Town FC, and the reserves and 3rd team continued to use the ground in Brickfield Lane. Ian Gray replaced Guy Slee as manager at the start of the season, with Guy having stepped up into the role of Chairman, joined on the committee with the arrival of Bob Henderson as Secretary. Our first season in the Spartan South Midlands League turned out to be a very successful one with the 1st team gaining promotion to Division One at the first attempt after finishing one point behind The 61 FC (Luton). We also won the Division Two Cup after beating Totternhoe in the final. Our second season in the Spartan South Midlands League (2009-10) surpassed everyone’s expectations when we achieved another promotion after finishing in second place behind Holmer Green. We also won two matches in our first attempt at the FA Vase, beating Harpenden Town and then Leverstock Green, eventually being knocked out in a tight 1-0 defeat at Stanway Rovers. The 2010-11 season saw us again playing at the highest level in the club’s long history (Step 5 of the National League System), and we also enjoyed our first ever outing in the FA Cup, drawing 0-0 with Barking before losing 1-0 in the replay. Another highlight of the season was playing against Barnet in the 2nd round of the Herts Senior Cup, drawing 1-1 after 90 minutes before losing 4-1 in Extra Time. In January 2012, long-serving manager Ian Gray stepped down from the role of 1st team

manager after 3½ successful years in charge, having guided the team from Division Two to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League with back-to-back promotions. A new management team was appointed who were previously with St Albans City reserves. An influx of new players and the guidance of player-manager Alexis Nicholas saw us achieve our pre-season aim of staying in the Premier Division, as we ended in 15th position out of 22 teams. The start of the 2012-13 season saw Franco Sidoli join as 1st team manager having also left St Albans City during the summer. Franco was supported by a coaching team of Alexis Nicholas, Lewis Dommett and Hector Varela as we enjoyed a successful season with a comfortable mid-table finish and our first ever win in the FA Cup following a 2-0 victory over Hertford Town. We also reached the final of the Premier Division Cup when we were unlucky to lose 3-2 against Aylesbury United (After Extra Time), having taken the lead twice in the match. At the end of the 2012-13 season, Franco Sidoli stepped down as 1st team manager due to a change in work circumstances for 3 out of 4 people in the management team, including himself, which would not have allowed them to give 100% commitment to the job during the forthcoming season. The club appointed Geoff O’Vell as the new 1st team manager, who had previously been 1st team manager at Colney Heath, Hoddesdon Town and Broxbourne Borough. Geoff was joined by Assistant Manager Paul Surridge and coach Mark Mezen. A highlight during this season was drawing Watford FC in the 1st Round of the Herts Senior Cup. We lost 2-0 with goals from Luke O’Nien and Bernard Mensah securing the win for Gianfranco Zola’s Championship side. We had mixed fortunes during the 2013-14 league campaign and although an improved end to the season saw us make a late climb up the league table to finish just below mid table, the club decided that a restructuring of the team management was required at the end of the season. This saw Geoff O’Vell and his management team leave the club. At the start of the next season (2014-15) Micky

Hazard was appointed as the new 1st team manager. As a player, Micky was a member of the Tottenham team that won the 1982 FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 1984. He also went on to play for Chelsea, Portsmouth, Swindon Town and then Tottenham for a second spell. Since the end of his playing career, Hazard was Youth Academy Coach at Crystal Palace and was also involved on the management team of Sevenoaks Town and Hoddesdon Town. Micky was joined by the return of Franco Sidoli, Lewis Dommett and Hector Varela who were all wellknown to the club as, along with Alexis Nicolas, they formed our 1st team management team during a successful 2012-13 season. The first season in charge for our new management team was very successful as we ended in 9th position in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division - our highest ever finish. We surpassed this in the following season (201516) as we ended in 6th position in the league and we also won the Herts Charity Shield for the first time following a 3-1 victory over Tring Athletic in the final at the County Headquarters, Letchworth. The 2016-17 season saw the return of our 1st team to Brickfield Lane in Arkley, Barnet, following over £500,000 worth of facilities improvements and eight years of groundsharing with Potters Bar Town. Ground improvements included the installation of floodlights, a spectator stand, new fencing and pathways, pitch drainage installation, a new car park and the refurbishment of the pavilion clubhouse and changing rooms. This was made possible thanks to grants and donations from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, Sport England, the Peter Harrison Foundation, the Happy Charitable Trust, Village Healthcare and the Back2Barnet campaign. A highlight of our first season back in Barnet was an outstanding FA Cup run, eventually being knocked out in a Third qualifying round replay against Eastbourne Borough who went on to beat Aldershot Town in the next round. The 2017-18 season saw a change of first team management with Anthony Clark being appointed in October 2017. As a player,

Anthony appeared for Southend United before playing at a high standard of non-league football with teams including Hendon and Wealdstone. A very strong end to the season saw us finish in sixth place, our joint highest ever finish. The 2018-19 league campaign was our most successful in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, finishing in 3rd place, missing out on the Runners Up spot by goal difference. In the summer of 2019, following correspondence with the Football Association, a lateral movement saw Hadley FC moved to the Essex Senior League for the 2019-20 season after 10 seasons in the Spartan South Midlands League. This move was part of the Football Association’s ongoing restructuring of the National League System and their move towards a “pure pyramid”. A highlight of the 2019-20 season was reaching the Third qualifying round of the FA Cup, equalling our best ever run from the 2016-17 season. We eventually lost at Havant & Waterlooville, but getting that far in such a prestigious competition was an excellent achievement by Anthony Clark’s team. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season then ended early and was declared null and void. Similarly, the 2020-21 Essex Senior League season was also curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but we had a fantastic run in the FA Vase, reaching the Fifth Round for the first time in the club’s history. We were unfortunate to lose on penalties to Binfield who went on to reach the final at Wembley - this was another excellent achievement from Anthony Clark’s team. In the summer of 2021, the Football Association again carried out some restructuring of the National League System and we were moved from the Essex Senior League back into the Spartan South Midlands League. It was a shame that we could not complete a full season in the Essex Senior League, and we enjoyed our time in that league and meeting some new clubs, but we now look forward to the 2021-22 season back in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.

MAKE FOOTBALL EVERYONEʼS GAME.

MATCH REPORT saturday 28 august leverstock green 3-0 Dunstable Town The Blues left Pancake Lane on Saturday on the wrong end of a three nil scoreline, at the foot of the SSML table and without a point or a League goal after their first two games. Avoiding any references to feeling as “flat as a pancake” Blues Manager, Gareth Jackson, remained upbeat and confident after the final whistle that the tide would turn soon, and results would improve. There were debuts for Mo Elmasry between the sticks, deputising for Dan Gould who was unavailable, Bobby Armstrong, Kenny Appiah & Manny Richardson, signed from London Colney, Wembley & Arlesey Town respectively. There was also a welcome return for John Sonuga, who had been a lynchpin in the Blues backline in the Steps 3 and 4 days. The centre back pairing of Armstrong & Sonuga certainly gave the Blues a more experienced backline but even their combined years of experience couldn’t stop the home side from scoring three times, with a cross from Tyler Fry against the crossbar the nearest the Blues came to getting off the mark. Dunstable kicked off playing down the slight slope and with a good following making the short journey down the M1 making up a third of the gate. It was an even-handed contest during the first 20 minutes or so. Tyler Fry was unlucky on the quarter hour mark to see his effort come off the crossbar and bounce to safety which the home side took to their advantage, advancing in numbers but unable to make it count when it mattered most. As Leverstock grew into the game, Elmasry

did well to get down to his right to keep out an effort and thought he’d done enough a couple of minutes later when he made another good save, only to see the ball rebound to NoelWilliams to pick his spot and put the home side ahead on 23 minutes. At just 18 years old, Isiah Noel-Williams is very nearly 30 years younger than the vastly experienced Scott McGleish who was on the bench but decided his services weren’t required. Armstrong & Sonuga found their names in referee Richard Kendall’s notebook and a Stapleton shot from distance ended the half. Leverstock Green extended their lead ten minutes after the break with a goal from a corner put in at the back post by Paul Marks. Three minutes later and it was effectively game over as Ollie Lawford put the game to bed. Gareth Jackson brought on L’Kharmi Gale for Craig Packham & Jeremiah Debayo for Kenny Appiah. The Blues showed more urgency and pressed higher but found the home defence in an uncharitable mood. A well struck shot from Simon Richards on 70 minutes just needed a blue shirt in the box to tap in a rebound but there was nobody on hand to oblige. Joe Mead replaced Tyler Fry with three minutes to go on the clock but good game management from the home side saw them finish the game in second place with 9 points from their first four games.

IMPROVING THE LIV

BECOMING A COMMUNITY BENEFIT SOCIET

Dunstable Town FC have an interesting history. I think that’s the polite way of putting it. Formed in 1883 the Club had several homes before finding permanent residency at Creasey Park Those of a certain vintage may have witnessed the mercurial magic of George Best when he graced the hallowed turf of Creasey Park in 1974, playing three times for the Blues as a favour to his old Manchester United teammate, Barry Fry, who was the Club’s Manager. Fry, in his first job in football management went on to manage Barnet, Birmingham City & Peterborough Utd, where he is Director of Football. But Best hasn’t been the only former International to wear the Club’s colours, former England player Jeff Astle scored 34 times for the Blues in the 1974 -75 season. Kerry Dixon is another former England International who started his career at Dunstable Town, before going on to play for Reading & then heading to the bright lights of London’s Kings Road, where he scored 193 times for Chelsea making him the Club’s alltime third most prolific goal scorer. More recently, Luton Town player Peter Kioso played for the Club as an 18-year-old in the 2017 -18 season, and at the end of last season another 18 year old, Eric Ameyaw left the Club to sign for Fulham. But, to misquote Freddie Mercury, it hasn’t always been a “bed of roses and a pleasure cruise”. Tales of money in envelopes, dodgy dealings and financial mismanagement have also seen the Club lurch from peak to trough and back again on too occasions causing the Club to go out of business for four years in the mid to late 1990’s and a partial shut-down in the 1970’s. Us football fans, are, by and large, masochists. We derive a perverse sense of pleasure from following our teams’ (mis)fortunes, getting

battered by the elements on terraces without covers, travelling long distances on bitterly cold Tuesday nights to see our teams succumb to a blatant dive in the last minute of stoppage time. And because we’re masochists and creatures of habit we do it every season. But we at least have the certainty that our Club will be still in existence for us to experience this self-inflicted pain and punishment we secretly enjoy. But try asking the fans of Macclesfield, Bury, and North Ferriby who have all seen their Clubs fold recently due to the financial pressures of boom-and-bust football economics, about the certainty of where they’ll be at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. The pressure to achieve success at all costs comes at too high a price for many Clubs. As our own experience in the 1970’s and 1990’s showed, we’ve also ridden the football financial rollercoaster and fallen from grace in so doing. The global Covid pandemic wrought havoc and despair to the lives of millions. While the nation mourned the lives of countless thousands, many of the Club’s commercial sponsors saw their own businesses and livelihoods severely affected by lockdowns and the cessation of normal trading. Faced with a loss of nearly half its income the Club had to fold its Cup winning Development Team, circle the wagons and concentrate on keeping just one senior team playing last season. Dunstable Town became managed by the Club’s fans in 2017. Fan ownership is a relatively recent concept of running a football Club. Many clubs, even at non-league level,

rely heavily on the generosity of individual donors to keep their clubs afloat, or own their own facilities and can supplement match day income by hiring out their facilities to community groups, or running popular social events from their clubhouses. As tenants of the Council and with no individual benefactors that is simply not an option for Dunstable Town. Therefore, to protect the Club’s history and ensure a sustainable future we began talks with the Football Supporters’ Association earlier this year and will now start the new season in August as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, the Club will operate as a social enterprise combining both traditional football activities with working in our local communities on improving the mental and physical health and well-being of individuals. Regulars on match-days at Creasey Park may not notice much of a difference. It’s on nonmatch days though that being a CBS club starts to make a difference. The Club has been fortunate over the past few seasons to have developed a strong relationship with Mind BLMK (Beds, Luton, and Milton Keynes) and for the past three seasons have had the Mind BLMK logo on the front of the playing kit. There is ample anecdotal evidence to suggest that this move encouraged and empowered many people to seek help for emotional and psychological problems they were facing from both statutory and non-statutory mental health services. With Mind BLMK as a strategic partner the Club has worked on initiatives to actively promote better mental health through football and exercise. All very noble and worthwhile you may say, but how does this benefit the Club’s supporters? The answer is very simple. Supporters, and members of the public, have the opportunity

to become owners of Dunstable Town FC. By simply purchasing a maximum of one share per person a supporter automatically becomes an owner of Dunstable Town FC. It’s a scheme that has been championed by League clubs like AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Exeter City, and non-league clubs such as AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Lewes FC and FC United of Manchester. It is the ultimate manifestation of fan power and the pinnacle of supporter commitment to become an owner of the Club you support. It means that you don’t have to be the owner of an oil well or a gas field to own your own football club, you can be like 1,600 people who own Lewes FC or 800 who own AFC Rushden & Diamonds, receive your owner’s share certificate and be part of the Club that is a benefit to the community. Owners enjoy benefits from the Club’s Blue Card, shop and save discount scheme, receive preferential rates from Club partners in the health and leisure sector, the Club’s own Nike kit supplier and a growing number of shops and traders in the town, keen to do their bit and show support for the Club With A Purpose. And if that wasn’t enough, owners automatically get voting rights on electing the Club’s Board of Directors every year, choosing new kit, and consulted on future plans for the Club. For less than the price of a couple of cinema tickets and a bag of popcorn you can become an owner of Dunstable Town FC and support the great work we’re doing with our partners improving the lives of others. Children’s ownership is half price but has no voting rights until aged 16. For details on how to own your local club, please visit our website. www.dunstabletownfc.co.uk/ownership

31 August 2007..

Sevilla Can’t Be Super A Second Time On 31 August 2007, AC Milan spoiled Sevilla’s bid to repeat as Super Cup champions, beating the Spanish side 3-1 in Monaco. Sevilla, as winners of the UEFA Cup in 2005, played their first Super Cup in 2006, beating the reigning Champions League winners Barcelona 0-3. They won the UEFA Cup again in 2006 to set up their 2007 meeting with that year’s Champions League winners, AC Milan. Playing before a crowd of 17,822 at the Stade Louis II, Sevilla staked their claim with a 14thminute goal from Brazilian playmaker Renato. The score resulted from a corner kick that Renato headed down to the feet of Milan keeper Dida, who misjudged the bounce and allowed the ball to get past him into the net. Despite pressure from Milan at the other end,

particularly from striker Pippo Inzaghi, Sevilla still held the 0-1 lead at the break. Shortly after the restart, however, Inzaghi headed the equalizer home (55’) and Milan claimed the lead seven minutes later with a thundering volley from left back Marek Jankulovski to the far post (62’). Milan sealed the win in the 87th minute after Sevilla left back Ivica Dragutinović conceded a penalty with a tackle from behind on Madrid striker Kaká, who dutifully converted the kick to stretch the margin of victory to 3-1.
