inside the boardroom A fantastic turn out of 365 does show you the potential that exists locally to watch grassroots football A very warm welcome to all of you today and especially to our visitors from Harefield Utd, who I hope enjoy their afternoon with us and return home safely after the final whistle has blown. We’re expecting our opponents to provide stiff opposition today. It’s a game of no little significance to Joe & Kyle, as the reverse fixture was their first match in charge and ended up losing 0 – 4. However, we’ve come a long way since then and as well as having a very different playing squad there is a very different culture which all the old and the new players have embraced and one, we believe will reap rewards in the next couple of seasons. The re-structure to a Community Benefit Society will provide the foundation to enable Joe & Kyle to work their magic on and off the pitch and provide the Club with a long-term sustainable future. We welcomed our 91st individual owner following the Beds County Cup match against a very strong and skillful, Luton Town side. As much as we’d all dreamt of a giant-killing victory it wasn’t to be, but credit is due to our lads who never gave up and played their part in a well contested game of football. A fantastic turn out of 365 does show you the potential that exists locally to watch grassroots football at this level. It was good to see so many Dunstable Town supporters out in force that day. Over the coming weeks and months, you will notice small changes to the way we promote
the Club. One of our biggest objectives is to explain to more people why we’re different to every other club in the three counties region and encourage more people to become owners of the Club. Building the owners’ base into three figures is my target between now and the end of the season. In the last 10 days I’ve had meetings with several community organisations who understand the value and importance of the community work we do and look to see whether there are areas where we can work collaboratively on projects. Our Walking Football group is now being run by two familiar names and faces to many of you, Ian Bateman & Steve Lewington who have taken the group up a notch or two and provided a professional style of organization and management. Part of the re-structure meant that the Club is run by a board of Directors. I will be writing to all the owners in the next week to let them know who the directors are and then make them known to the wider public. In the next few weeks this column will be written by different Directors explaining their role in the Club. Finally, a word of thanks for all of you who have supported the Club in a multitude of ways this season. I can’t stress enough how important it is in terms of keeping everyone’s morale up to know that the Club means as much to you as it does to us. Enjoy today’s game and see you back here on Saturday 12th February for the visit of Ardley Utd. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Harefield United - 3

Welcome to the management, players, committee, and supporters from Harefield United ahead of today’s game. It is 16 weeks since we last played Harefield in what was our 1st game in charge on October 9th, 2021. It feels a lot longer than 16 weeks since me and Kyle took over. I think it’s an understatement to say that there have been some major changes since that time. At the time of writing only 5 members of the previous squad remain. The players in question being Dan Gould, Daniel Trif, John Sonuga, Dylan Baker and Joe Mead. Both Joe Mead and Dylan Baker were players we had worked with before we arrived so had a good working knowledge of their capabilities. We have seen over 40 players depart along with several staff members since our opening game against Harefield. The game at Harefield confirmed for us the rapid need to change. I remember our previous encounter with Harefield clearly albeit not particularly fondly where we were comprehensively beaten 4-0. Hindsight is always a wonderful thing and it certainly aided us in making decisions moving forward. It allowed us to identify where we were short. We were so far away from Harefield on the day it was embarrassing. Both myself and Kyle quickly learned what the group were about in terms of mentality and individual standards. There were a vast number of players that were substantially late on the day as well as demonstrating poor diet and hydration which were all massive concerns for us. In football it is very rare you inherit a job because everything is going well. The changes have been aplenty, and we find ourselves on the back of 9 league games unbeaten. We would have snapped
4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Harefield United harefield-print.indd 4
your hand off months ago with that kind of run, so we sit in a decent place now. Whilst it is important to acknowledge the achievements of the players and praise them for the mini run we are on, we by no means believe we are where we want to be. Football has a nasty habit of keeping you humble and each week we work to ensure we do not get carried away and focus solely on the next game. Kyle and I would like to extend our thanks to Andrew Madaras, Gary Levy and Matt Carrington for their support whilst we made wholesale changes. Sentiment can always cloud judgements when it comes to saying goodbye to players that served the club so well. At no point have any of them interfered in recruitment, retention, or selection. Any Management team will understand the difficulties when there is continuous interference. We share things with all 3 regularly which I feel is critical and Gary has become synonymous with the phrase “I’ll back you son”. To a lot of non-managers reading this the level of support we receive may not fully resonate with you, but we genuinely do have an outstanding group of Directors that share our desire to WIN! Our current group of players are a real special group of people. In an era in football where the game is ruthless, fickler and loyalty a thing of the past let me shed some light on what we have within this squad. In the last 3 weeks, 3 of our players J’Ardell Stirling, Dan Naylor and Liam McCrohan have all been approached by clubs higher up the football pyramid who can financially incentivise our players perhaps more than we can. All 3 of

notes from the bench It is 16 weeks since we last played Harefield in what was our 1st game in charge on October 9th, 2021. It feels a lot longer the players have immediately contacted me to let me know the situation and have all turned down the opportunities as they love being with our Football Club and the environment, they are in. I am delighted they love it here as we love having them here! These acts of loyalty are exactly the reasons why these players are such a special group and such a pleasure to work with. This group we really believe in and feel they can grow with us to get us to where we want to get to. Every Sunday whilst most players are resting, Terrence Muchineripi, Ethan Creary, Benji Gray, Ruairi Mills, Joe Sellers-West, Dan Naylor, and Jack Percy train with us a management team to work on individual bits of their game. Jamie Nicholls and J’Ardell Stirling both played through the pain barrier last week away at Crawley Green which highlights their commitment to the cause. Our new addition Benji Crilley has integrated well within the squad and brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the group. His attitude personifies what we want from the club and is another player that has come to Dunstable for the right reasons and took a substantial pay cut to come here to be part of something moving forward. I think it is important that supporters are aware of the levels of commitment shown by the players. We are all desperate to do well and thank you for the increased and loyal support we receive each week. Each week we seem to see more and more Dunstable hats and scarves at games which is fantastic so please keep that wonderful support coming. Last week’s game against Crawley Green was a good result however performance wise
harefield-print.indd 5
nowhere near our best. I felt we were ruthless and clinical in both boxes at big moments of the game and were deserved winners. Joe SellersWest got us off to a flying start and followed his goal up with another impressive performance. I was delighted for Ethan Creary to get his 1st goal for the club and for Kyle Faulkner to score an outstanding volley to seal the win. It feels like Kyle, and I are always demanding more and knit picking because in truth we always are! The mentality we set is that of constant incremental improvements. We will not accept mediocrity from ourselves or our players. As I am sure you have seen in the dugout, we are both lively individuals to say the least and at times I’m sure entertaining and that is simply down to an insatiable desire to WIN! What Kyle and I have is an incredible trust between us. Being in the game as long as I have been finding people you trust is not easy. I think it’s fair to say that is reflective in our group of players. We inherited a group that were happy to accept lateness and poor diets and now we have the opposite. The players are the ones who now demand the highest of standards from each other. It does not mean that suddenly, we are going to have a right to roll up and beat Harefield and others. Harefield provide a tough test for us with some excellent players in their group. They were much better than the 4-0 score line suggested in our previous encounter. We hope to carry on our good run of form in what will be a tough game. Enjoy the game. Joe DUNSTABLE TOWN v Harefield United - 5

Founded in 1868 Harefield United Football Club is the oldest in Middlesex.

L
L The Club has had a number of names throughout its history, one of the earliest being Harefield Victoria where the local paper of 1891 has a match report of a 1-0 win over Rickmansworth Rovers, the goal being scored by G Harland. The team was D Collett (goal), C Milton and J Varcos (backs), A Oates and J P Richardson (half backs), C Brown Jnr and G Webster (centres), W Prickett, G Winship, C Armour and G Harland (forwards).
However, they are one of those longstanding clubs who has had success on the football field but little at the senior level.
M
Harefield United originally played in local leagues, including the Uxbridge & District League, before the team progressed to the Great Western Combination in 1947. During the years spent in the U&DL Harefield United managed to win Division 3, the Uxbridge Junior Cup and Uxbridge Premier Cup.
R
One of the next names was Breakspear Institute FC, who played in the local Uxbridge leagues. The oldest copy of a document is the minutes of their AGM held in 1897. We also have early team photographs of Breakspear from 1903 showing some of the many honours won at the turn of the century. There is also a programme from 1922 when Breakspear and Harefield played against each other in front of 1922 people. The merger with Harefield FC was in 1934 when the team became Harefield United.
The Club spent nearly twenty years in the Great Western Combination league winning Division 2 in their first year along with the Chesham Cup. The Club winning Division 1 in 1951 followed this. The Reserves had their success during the 1960s in the Great Western Combination Reserve Divisions. Harefield’s next bit of silverware came after a move to the Parthenon League in 1964, the Championship being won in the debut campaign. After two season the ‘Hares’ moved on to the Middlesex

League and it was in that competition that they had their most successful period to date. The league Championship was won on 4 occasions between 1966 and 1971 and the League Cup was also taken twice in that period. 1975 saw Harefield accepted into the Athenian League where they remained for nine seasons. It was period of slow consolidation for the ‘Hares’ who eventually claimed the Runnersup spot in 1983/84, so earning themselves the right to a place in the newly expanded Isthmian League. United became founder members of the Division Two (North) in 1984/85 and played in that Division for two seasons before changing over to Division Two (South), the Club being caught up in the no-man’s land where the boundaries of the regionalised divisions met. Harefield struggled to make an impact in Division Two (North), finishing 18th out of the twenty clubs in both of the two campaigns spent in that Division. However, the change to the South section led to better performances and in 1986/7 they finished in 10th place out of 21 clubs, this was followed by a final placing of 13th the next season and then in season 1988/89 the ‘Hares’ were 5th. They dropped to a disappointing 12th the following campaign, but the final year of the regionalised leagues saw 7th place achieved. This meant that Harefield had made the cut off point for qualification to play in the first year of the newly formed Diadora (Isthmian) Division Two the following season. The new division was a struggle for the Middlesex Club, and they just missed relegation in the first year, but the next season were demoted along with Southall to Division 3. Despite this set back, the achievements of the Club in recent years have been quite remarkable considering that Harefield is a comparatively isolated location with a small population and consequently small crowds. The record attendance at Preston Park is 430, for a FA Vase tie against Bashley, which the Hares won 1-0. 1995/96 proved to be the last in the Icis (isthmian) League. Due to lack of funds to carry out ground improvements, the ‘Hares’
resigned from the League in November and were allocated to the Spartan League for season 1996/97. The Hares spent one season in the Spartan League before it merged with the South Midlands League. There were two Premier Divisions in the first season, and the clubs, which finished in the top half of each Division, formed the Premier Division for the following season. Unfortunately, the Hares only managed 11th position so they had to play in the Senior Division (now changed to Division 1). However, in 2002 the Hares gained promotion to the Premier, finally missing out on the League Championship by just one point. The consolation was beating the league champions, Greenacres, 4-1 in the final of the League Cup. There then followed more success during 2002/03 season, winning the Challenge Trophy, beating Dunstable Town (the league winners) 4-1 over two legs. The Hares also reached the final of the Premier League Cup and finished 4th. The Club also had good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase, beating Ryman sides on the way. This success continued during 2003/04 with a SSM Premier League Cup win, 1-0 against Brook House, and getting beaten 2-1 (aet) by Wealdstone in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Season 2004/5 saw the teams consolidate their positions in near the top of their leagues and we had the inaugural season for a U18 side in the Allied Counties East division. Season 2005/06 had its highs and lows. Despite the first team finishing 4th, its highest place since Stuart Leavy took over the senior side the team missed out getting promoted under the new league structure on goal difference. However, the ground improvements needed to get an E grading were completed before the deadline, this puts us in good stead for the future. The good news is that the U18 side not only won the East Division to get promoted to the Premier, but they won the Middlesex Youth Cup. To cap off a good season for the Club the Reserves came runners up in the North Division of the Suburban and are now in the Premier.

28/01/2022 00:28:13
The club has since remained in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division finishing runners-up twice, in the 2006–07 season and the 2008–09 season where they lost out on goal difference against Biggleswade Town. Manager Ian Crane left to join A.F.C. Hayes in the summer of 2012, and he was replaced by Uxbridge reserve boss Phil Granville. However, Granville left in the summer of 2015 to become Hanwell Town’s manager and he was replaced by Jason Shaw in May 2015. In the 2018-2019 season, Jason Shaw lead Harefield United to promotion with 5 games to spare in his fourth season with the club. The club would join Arsenal, Preston North End and Dunstable Town going the whole league season unbeaten in the 2018-2019 Spartan South Midlands Football League Division 1.

HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10

THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play

mascots for the luton town game Afternoon everyone and firstly we would like to thank our mascots from our under 12s and 10s that turned out for the Luton Town game a couple of weeks ago. It was great to see them supporting the team. Also, a big congratulations to first team player John Sonuga who made his 100th appearance for the club and captained the team that night against Luton. While we are congratulating people a big well done to Gary Rogers and Joe Le Vien from the under 14s Lions on reaching the semi-finals of the league Cup and also they have reached the semi-finals of the County Cup, well done guys. Lastly the youth section are on the lookout for kit sponsors and anyone that would be interesting in joining the youth committee if you have a skill that could help please get in touch with the club.

MATCH REPORT saturday 22nd january • SSMfl premier division THE BRACHE • attendance 75 Dunstable Town stretched their unbeaten run to nine league games on Saturday, when goals from Joe Sellers-West, Ethan Creary and Kyle Faulkner won the three points for the Blues. The hosts started the game aggressively, but it was only twelve minutes before Sellers-West lost his marker to head home from a Faulkner corner. Having taken the lead, it was Faulkner who had the next chance for the Blues, latching onto a pass into the box before pulling his shot wide of Ollie Keil’s goal, before Creary also headed over the bar from six yards.
volleyed home in emphatic style by a deserving Faulkner, a fine goal from the man of the match. The Blues looked to put the cherry on top in the closing stages, with the best chance falling to the ever-busy Percy, who put his effort wide with only the keeper to beat. Though Crawley Green sit at the foot of the table, they put in a battling performance, and Joe Deeney will be pleased with how his men dealt with the task at hand, later praising the resilience of the team. Dunstable’s form sees them sitting in thirteenth position, one position above Harefield United.
Crawley Green were physical and committed but didn’t do much to trouble Dan Gould in the first half, however a quick counterattack just before the hour mark saw a ball over the top catch the Dunstable backline out, allowing Patrick Tshikala to knock the ball over Gould into the net. Faulkner had a chance for a quick response for the Blues, but after latching onto a through ball, his shot was well over the bar. Even so, the scores were only level for seven minutes. Substitute Jack Percy received the ball on the left touchline, beat his man before playing a cross-field ball to Creary, who drove forward and hit a shot into the bottom corner. Keil got his hand to it but couldn’t keep it out. Percy himself then had the chance to finish the game off, when Faulkner sent him through on goal, but the keeper read his intentions well and was equal to Percy’s chipped attempt. A long throw from debutant Benji Crilley came off a Crawley Green head before being DUNSTABLE TOWN v Harefield United - 31
