FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome back to Creasey Park. After last weekend’s break its good to get back to some league action. Welcome to our near neighbours from Harpenden , who are enjoying an encouraging start to the season. We know this will be a tough encounter. I’m writing this the morning after the teams excellent Dudley Latham Cup win at Harefield United. Those of you who have watched the games over the last three weeks or so, will readily acknowledge that we have not had the returns our performances have deserved, so it was heartening, to see our young team (average age 20 years) professionally and skillfully negotiate a tricky tie. This means that we are away to Leverstock Green in the next round on Tuesday 5th November . Over the last few weeks we have seen our team dominate large periods of games, a case in point being the first half against AFC, only to come up short after 90 minutes. What is clear however, is that we are learning quickly and that the team is really knitting together and delivering technical and skillful performances. We have made both the first and second placed teams look decidedly ordinary in recent weeks , add to that improving game management, and I’m convinced we will soon be delivering more favourable results. We are now just a week away from our Quiz Night - 9th November, 7.30pm at Creasey. Tickets are selling well, but we

still have room for more. Tickets are £6 per person including light buffet. We are also running a Prize Raffle on the night with some excellent prizes to be won. On the commercial front more good news. We have added Caddington Grove Care Home and Saracen’s Head to our increasing portfolio of partners. We also have a few more bubbling under the surface which we hope will come to fruition. We continue to host our stall in the Quadrant , where we enjoy some excellent conversations with passersby, as we seek to raise awareness about our community club. Pop by and say hello! Also, just thought I’d say thank you to all you supporters who buy our 50/50 tickets on match days. I can see the ‘haunted looks’ on your faces as I approach you, but you continue to so generously give and support the club. We do not take this for granted and we appreciate the goodwill as you part with your hard earned cash. Finally, enjoy the game, exercise your vocal chords, and cheer the boys on this afternoon. Three points would be very welcome.

Neil

This month, in association with local education and training centre Develop EBP, we will be collecting warm clothes and toiletries for Luton based charity, NOAH Enterprise. As part of Develop’s learners social inclusion project, they are collecting for NOAH and we at Dunstable Town are keen to assist them and bolster their donation. Clean, new and gently-used clothing of all kinds are helpful. Underwear, t-shirts and socks, new and gently-used jeans and shoes, and professional clothing for those looking for work or re-entering the workforce. Warm outerwear, coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves, and sleeping bags are also in need. Many service users arrive at NOAH each morning looking to have a wash, clean their teeth and have a shave. Items most welcome include razors, toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, hand cream, shampoo and feminine hygiene products. Please bring your donations to our home games during November. LOCAL NON-LEAGUE CHAT with Ollie Bayliss

There is no doubt that non-league football is changing both on and off. One of the biggest ways is how we follow the progress of our local club. Gone are the days of waiting for results in the local paper or toggling Ceefax page 328. We live in a world of instant updates and ‘sharable content’ from even the smallest of grassroots teams. The invention of social media means an incident on the football pitch at any level has the potential to reach millions of people within minutes. Platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and especially Twitter can have a real tangible effect on the reputation and fan base of a nonleague club. It’s something which some clubs are utilising a lot better than others. This week Chichester City were given a bye in the FA Cup and prize money of £36,000. Within minutes the club tweeted that they would use some of the money to ‘make a donation towards the continuation of Bury FC’. Within the evening, their tweet had gone viral, reaching hundreds of thousands of people, bringing with it a priceless amount of goodwill. In a previous generation, it’s easy to see how the gesture would have been confined to programme notes and an article in the local paper. You could be forgiven for thinking that ‘follows’ and ‘likes’ don’t equate to actual tangible fans through the turnstile, but you’d be wrong. ‘Hashtag United’ are a club who began life as an esports team and social media movement. Last season they entered non-league football. They won promotion to Step 5 at their first attempt and currently sit top of the Essex Senior League with the highest average

attendance in the league. It astonishes me that some clubs more or less ignore social media. Some will only sporadically post a full-time result perhaps a few hours after the game has finished. With clunky, non-mobile friendly league websites, Twitter is increasingly the go-to platform to get results. It also gives fans the chance to follow live updates from games keeping them in touch with matches they can’t be at. Being able to support your club remotely really matters; it increases your emotional investment in the side which in turn makes you more likely to go to games, order merchandise and buy season tickets. Some local clubs have fully embraced the humour and charm of the non-league match update. A prime example being Winslow United who earlier this season tweeted; “Goal! 7-1! No clue who scored as yet again I’m looking for footballs. Rest of the committee must be busy”. Honest tweets with a bit of humour are shared hundreds of times and increase the clubs reputation. I fully understand that in a grassroots world, where clubs are run on volunteers scratching around to field a competitive team, keeping up the social media account is a lower priority. But you can’t expect the casual local fan to come through your turn-style if they don’t know when games are on and they’re not able to follow the fortunes of their local club from afar. Harnessing social media has a big part to play in increasing the support and status of a club, which ultimately breeds success on the field too.

HARPENDEN TOWN HISTORY Harpenden Town Football Club was formed as Harpenden F.C. 1891 playing in both the Mid-Herts and Herts County Leagues, winning the Mid-Herts on numerous occasions. Town was added in the 1908. Town climbed into the South Midlands League in 1957 winning the Premier Division title in 1962 and 1965 and in 1968 adding both the Herts Charity Shield & the South Midlands League Shield to their trophy haul. Season 1990-91 saw the last significant investment in the club with the erection of the Centenary Stand, and, the installation of floodlights. The Club obtained entry to the FA Cup for the first time in 1998 and is a regular contender in the FA Vase. After a turbulent period resulting in relegation from the Premier Division in 2000 and 2005. At the start of the 2006/07 season a new committee was in place their first move was to gain the Football Associations Charter Standard Accreditation, which ensured the correct structures were in place. On the field the club also required stabilising and it was felt that more local community approach was needed so links with Harpenden Colts were established to bring through local young players ensuring a pathway from under sevens to adult football. Success soon followed and after only one year Harpenden Town was named Herts FA Charter Standard club of the year thanks to their community work, which included

hosting an anti racism event, an adult seven aside competition, free coaching offered to schools/junior teams and the development of women’s football through the Herts youth games.. The past two seasons has seen Harpenden make strides to secure its long term future however with possibly the worst facilities in the league due to lack of investment and vandalism over the past 20 years we face a massive task to completely turn around the clubs fortunes. We now have a new football management set up with local loyalties and most new players come from the local area. Off the field there is a new committee of local football fans who have not been involved with the club before supported by the old committee and others who still assist with the running of the club. In 2015 having successfully obtained £100k of funding the clubs facilities have been refurbished which has had a positive impact on the club and its profile. 2018-19 was the last for the very successful manager Danny Plumb and the 2019-20 saw the new governor “Martin Standen” (Stanno) take over the reigns and with it comes a new squad of players. This will potentially be an interesting season – good luck to all!

REPORTING IN

OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST TRING ATHLETIC A last gasp goal from Tring Athletic’s Jacob Carter was the only difference between the two sides as Dunstable Town made the short trip to the Grass Roots Stadium on Saturday. Dunstable’s first chance of note came in the thirteenth minute, when Chris Stapleton fizzed a low ball across the box, arriving at the feet of Joe Hankins, who took a touch and hit it on the turn, but dragged it wide of the mark. Stapleton was at it again shortly afterwards, with a darting run through the midfield, and with the ball looping up off of the leg of a defender, the ball was there to be hit, but Stapleton couldn’t keep his effort down, and Tring keeper Charlie Mann watched it sail over the crossbar. Towards the end of the first half, Tring had a good spell of pressure, winning a succession of corners, but the Dunstable backline stood firm. With half time approaching, Jack Harvey came the closest to breaking the deadlock so far, finding himself with space to unleash a twentyfive yard drive, which Mann had to get to, as it was heading straight into the top corner. There was still time for another chance for the Blues, with Eric Ameyaw winning the aerial battle from the resulting corner, but he wasn’t able to direct it on target. The second half was an even contest, but Dunstable continued to be more incisive, albeit without converting any of their chances. With twenty minutes left to play, substitute Andre Elliott played a long ball down the line, which Tring’s Jack Sunderland tried to see out, but with Stapleton looking to latch onto it, it was the Dunstable attacker who managed

to nod the ball on, and while Hankins was on hand to receive the ball from Stapleton, his shot was too high. Evans Lamboh replaced Jack Harvey shortly afterwards, and looked hungry to make an impact. Into the last ten minutes, the visiting Blues were still pressing for a winner, and a Daniel Trif through ball found Stapleton just outside the box, but he couldn’t get a clean enough contact on his shot, which went wide. Minutes later, Tring’s Tommy Fletcher was looking to play out from the back, but found himself under immediate pressure. Looking to play the ball back to his goalkeeper, he decided against doing so, only to find it was his only option. Dunstable fans were on the edge of their seats as a heavy back pass went narrowly wide of the goal. With only a minute left of the ninety, Dunstable’s hard work was undone. With Tring winning a free kick in the middle of the field, Jacob Carter made a run along the left, and a quickly dinked free kick was taken on the outside of Carter’s left foot, looping up and leaving Gould helpless in the Dunstable goal, securing three points that maintains Tring’s lead at the top of the league. Blues manager Gareth Jackson said of his side: ‘I can’t fault the lads, they did all I wanted them to do, but we were punished for switching off one time. If we perform to that standard regularly though, there will be plenty of wins to come.’

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE Good afternoon and congratulations to Gareth, Ryan and the players on winning 2-1 on Tuesday night against a physical Harefield United team in the cup. Also good luck today against Harpenden. A couple of weeks ago it was good to see our club photographer attend a couple of our youth games. Chris White came and took some pictures of our newly formed under 7s and our under 12s Lions, both teams playing some great football. Chris will be attending some more youth games when he is available, and both sets of managers Tyler Dunnell and Gary Roger’s were delighted with the pictures taken.

Our competitive fixtures that I can tell you about this weekend at Creasey Park for our youth teams are as follows: Chiltern Youth League U13s Sunday Div 1 Dunstable Town Lions v Flitwick Eagles Reds. Kick off 09.30 Chiltern youth League U18s Sunday Div 1 Dunstable Town v Barton Rovers. Kick off 14.00 The rest of the teams are on the road or are non-competitive, so good luck to all the children and coaches.

All our youth teams have sponsors now and are playing in the Macron kit, like our adult section and it’s good to see, so a big thank you to everyone who has helped to make this happen to the local company’s and managers etc.

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

2 NOVEMBER 1929 - THE BLUE SIDE OF BUSBY On 2 November 1929, 20-year old inside left forward Matt Busby made his professional debut. For Manchester City. Despite being best known as the manager who raised Manchester United to glorious heights, including five First Division titles and the European Cup, Busby began his career on the blue side of town, signing with City in February 1928 at the age of 17. His first contract was worth ÂŁ5 per week and included a clause that allowed him to leave after a year if he chose to rejoin his mother, who had emigrated to the United States. But despite not getting a first-team appearance in that first year, he decided to stick it out with City and eventually got his debut at home against Middlesbrough. City won 3-1.

Busby stayed with City for eight seasons, making a total of 229 appearances and winning the 1934 FA Cup. In 1936, he moved to Liverpool where he played for four more seasons before World War II interrupted league play in 1939. During the war, Busby got his first taste of management, taking charge of an Army side. When the war ended, he was preparing to return to Liverpool in a coaching role, but the move was interrupted by Manchester United, who offered him the job as manager. He accepted and proceeded to establish United as one of Europe’s dominant sides.
