inside the boardroom It’s been a busy time for both Clubs recently with managerial changes and certainly for us a very different looking team A very warm welcome to our former Chairman, John McLoughlin and his committee colleagues, First Team manager, Paul Bonham & our former Assistant Manager, Caretaker Manager and First Team Coach, Anthony Christophi, and of course the players, coaching staff, and fans of Leighton Town. We hope everyone enjoys their evening at Creasey Park and have a safe journey home come the final whistle. Joe & Kyle have worked trojan-like behind the scenes looking to bring in players they believe can strengthen the squad and instill their beliefs and playing philosophy on the training pitch. When we appointed Joe, we understood there would be no quick fixes or tweaking things at the edges. Fundamentally a root and branch reappraisal of the squad and its culture would be required to get us away from the bottom of the table and that is what Joe & Kyle have started to deliver. As well as new arrivals we’ve said goodbye to Ivan Arapov and Rob Sinclair on the coaching side, and established players, Chris Stapleton, Gregg Douglas, and Roy Byron. All leave us with sincere thanks for their hard work and loyalty to the Club and our best wishes for their futures. Off the pitch, Peter has organized a fundraising Quiz Night which takes place this Friday 29th October at Creasey Park. There are still a few places left. There’s a large cash prize waiting for the winner or the winning team. Entry is

only £5 per person and while it is important that we support Creasey Park with private functions such as this and put plenty of money behind the bar, James has kindly allowed us to bring our own food if you want to on the night. Hot food will still be available on the night. Please contact Peter on fundraising. dunstabletownfc@gmail.com for more details. Tonight, as well as welcoming our guests from Leighton Town It’s also a great pleasure to welcome Richard Irving to Creasey Park. Richard is the Network manager for Community Owned Clubs at the Football Supporters’ Association and advised and oversaw the Club’s restructure to a Community Benefit Society in the summer. The amount of work that Richard did on the Club’s behalf cannot be underestimated and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Finally, we travel to Flackwell Heath next Saturday and then play New Salamis here at Creasey Park on the 6th November. Club Photographer, Chris White (aka Cupcake) is liaising with the local 460 Air Cadet group to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. Peter will also be presenting L&D Fundraising Manager, Charmaine Norrish with a cheque for £2,474 from last years sponsored walk. Please get here early to see both events. Tonight, is going to be a tough local derby & we’ll need you all to be the 12th man so please get behind Joe & the boys as loudly as you can. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Leighton Town - 3

from the bench I have been delighted with the response of our players in the last two weeks A warm welcome to Paul who is the new Manager of Leighton Town and a quick welcome back to Anthony Christophi who has departed, to take the Assistant Manager position at Leighton Town. Anthony was with myself for a short space of time, and I enjoyed working with him and wish him and Paul well at Leighton (only after tonight!) I have been delighted with the response of our players in the last two weeks. As supporters will see, there have been multiple changes to the squad, which I feel are for the better. There can be little doubt that changes needed to be made, as the inherited group were bottom of the league, so recruitment and most importantly retention, is paramount to get the squad where we want. I was delighted with the performance and result away at Broadfields. I was really pleased with our pressing, regains and in both boxes, we were clinical which ultimately yielded a positive result. Our attitude and structure when we went down to 10 men was exactly what was required. We had an average age of just 21 years old against Broadfields. I have a firm belief that if you are good enough, you are old enough! We have worked incredibly hard on the training pitch since Broadfields to ensure we are prepared and ready for the tough challenge ahead of us this evening. The work ethic and buy in from the group has been brilliant and hopefully that continues. I promised sweat on the shirt and a passionate, energetic group when I took the job and I believe we are showing that.

It is only 1 win! There are no champagne corks popping as we still find ourselves in a precarious league position. You will get to know myself and Kyle that we are always demanding more from ourselves and more from our players. I must say a big thank you to the welcome we have received from our wonderful committee and supporters since being here. The committee do such an incredible job in ensuring the players get the best possible environment, which is really appreciated by players and staff. I can assure our loyal supporters that our committee go above and beyond for this club. The training facility the club works so hard to give us, is of critical importance for myself and Kyle to get the crucial work into the players. I have loved every minute so far and understand the hard work ahead of us. There is still 78 points to play for this season so there is a lot of football left to play. Kyle and I are confident that if we keep the performance levels the way they have been in the last 2 games we can get ourselves well clear of trouble. Please keep the excellent support coming. The players really thrive on it. As the Head Coach I want to say that If things are going well, please congratulate the players and if things are going poorly, please send your criticism to me. I’m proud to be the Head Coach of this club and am looking forward to getting this club moving in the right direction.

Enjoy the

Joe

game.

Leighton Town opposition spotlight

Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions. Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County League. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27. In 1952, they became a founder member of the Hellenic League, but after two disappointing seasons, moved to the South Midlands League. In 1965/66 season however, the Premier Championship sat in the Leighton

Town Boardroom. The club then rejoined the Spartan League in 1967/68. Leighton proceeded to consolidate their League success by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for three successive seasons in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately, some of the successful players moved on to other clubs, and Leighton’s fortunes again declined. A move to the United Counties League proved disastrous and after just two seasons, the club rejoined the South Midlands League. During the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Leighton were unable to capture the success of the ‘60’s. In 1990/1991 the First Team won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the O’Brien’s Premier Division Cup, both for the first time in the club’s history. The 1991/2 season was one of the club’s best. The South Midlands Premier Division title, which had eluded the club for so long, was won,

The Club missed out on promotion in their first Isthmian League season by just a single point, but the Youth Team retained the County Cup. 1995/6 saw the First Team win promotion to Division 2 of the Isthmian League, whilst at the same time retaining the Buckingham Charity Cup. In the 1996/7 season, Leighton won the Isthmian League Associated Members Trophy for the first time. 1998/99 saw the return of the Associated Members Trophy and the Buckingham Charity Cup. Season 2003/04 Leighton won the Ryman Isthmian Second Division title. They were also named Ryman Division Two Team of the Year, and Paul Burgess was awarded Manager of the Year. They also reached the Fifth round of the FA Vase, and the final of the Beds Senior Cup, before losing to Andover and Arlesey Town respectively. The 2004-05 season saw the club placed in The

Southern League East Division and finished in a creditable tenth place. They also won the Buckinghamshire Charity Cup. The Reserves won the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup and the U18’s won the SCYFL League Shield.

The 09/10 season saw Leighton once again finish in the top half of the table, when they finished in 9th place and they also lost the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final to Southern League rivals, Arlesey Town after penalties.

The 05-06 Season saw the Club progress again, improving on the year before, as they finished 8th in The Southern League Western Division. After a poor start, League results improved and the side only suffered four defeats from the start of November until the end of March, a play-off place just eluding them.

Season 2010/2011, saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points, their best performance since joining the Southern Football League.

After three excellent victories interest in the FA.Trophy competition ended with a single goal defeat to eventual semi-finalists, Borehamwood.

2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place.

The Club also reached the Beds Senior Cup Final, but sadly they again finished as Runners Up. The Club were relocated to the Southern League Midland Division for 06-07 season but only one League win in the first six games and early exits in the two FA Competitions cost Paul Burgess his job in September. He was replaced by former Wycombe professional Keith Scott, results did improve but it was a disappointing season, although Town did win the Bucks Senior Charity Cup. The 07-08 started brightly with the first League defeat not coming until mid-October. Three wins in the FA Cup saw the Club reach the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in its history. A 3-0 defeat to Conference South, Havant and Waterlooville finally ended the run. Keith Scott then left in December to join Windsor and Eton. In January 2008, Assistant Manager Sean Downey was appointed as First Team Manager and did a splendid job as the Club ended their League season in 9th place, winning the Bucks Charity Cup and reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup once more. The 08/09 Season the First Team finished 8th in the Southern League, Midland Division, achieving their highest points total to date at that level.

8 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Leighton Town

The 2011/2012 a poor season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years.

2015/2016 After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season. 2016/2017 This was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and they eventually finished in 16th place. 2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Vase. Gates improved and it was their best season for about 8 years. 2018/2019 Manager, Scott Reynolds resigned in the close season and Danny Nicholls was appointed as Manager but left in October due to work commitments. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson, who had previously won the Premier division title with London Colney as their new Management Team. They steadied the ship and finished in mid table. 2019/2020 Was a good season for the Club as they again reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase and after a slow start in the League the team started to find some good form and slowly climbed up the table. The team were also awarded the Team of the Month twice.

2020/2021 Town for the third time in 4 seasons reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase but sadly lost out to 2 late penalties. An indifferent start in the League meant they could not quite gain the points needed to gain promotion in a Covid affected season.

2021/2022 Leighton are hoping to be challenging at the top end of the table but are well aware that this is a difficult Division and several other strong teams will be competing to finish in the top 2 places.

MATCH REPORT saturday 16 october Broadfields United 1 - 2 Dunstable Town First-half debut goals from Joe Sellars-West & Grenadian International, Kwazim Theodore were enough to give the Blues the three points despite a spirited and determined performance from the home side.

Dan Trif accelerated down the left flank and crossed beautifully for Kwazim Theodore but he couldn’t get his shot on target and the chance to surely put the game to bed went begging.

There were full starting debuts for Josh Page, Liam McCrohan, Ollie Swain and Joe SellarsWest, only “veterans” Dan Gould & Dan Trif remained from the side that had last got three points, beating Tring Athletic on the 21st September.

Two minutes later Dan Gould needed to get down to his left when a shot took a wicked deflection and threatened to creep in at the far post. Danger averted thanks to Dan’s lightening reactions, but even he was helpless to stop Broadfields getting a lifeline shortly before the hour with a superbly taken goal from Aldis Aliu. The fightback was on and there was still half an hour left on the clock.

There was early pressure from the home side, and it understandably took Dunstable, playing in their away kit of red and black, a little time to settle but having coped well with Broadfield’s early threats, took the lead in the 16th minute. Jimmy Hartley was fouled out on the left flank. Dylan Baker took the resulting free-kick which was inch perfect for Joe Sellars-West to climb highest and plant a commanding header beyond the reach of Matt Faley in the home goal. It was only Dunstable’s sixth league goal of the season and the rapturous cheers from the Dunstable fans in the ground was a sure sign that the goal drought had finally been broken. Dunstable’s second came 15 minutes later. Sellars-West then turned provider, seizing on a through ball from Terrence Muchineripi, his cross from the left to the unmarked Kwazim Theodore was duly slotted home. The last time Dunstable Town were two goals up in a game? Ironically, it was against Broadfields Utd in the run up to last Christmas. And history repeated itself again today with Broadfields pulling back a second half goal just as they had at Creasey on the 15th December.

The crowd were treated to a well contested match with plenty of end-to-end action to enjoy in what was a great advertisement for Step 5 football. Two cheeky backheel passes from Dunstable so nearly bore fruit for Kwazim Theodore but his firmly struck shot on target was blocked while in another free flowing move, Simon Richards played in Dan Trif, advancing at speed down the left, only to see Faley get down well to make an important save. At the other end Dan Gould was called into action to make some important saves and Broadfields had a strong claim for a penalty rejected. As the minutes ebbed away the Dunstable defenders stood tall and strong and did their jobs. Referee Joseph Casey’s final whistle was greeted with huge relief with Manager, Joe Deeney able to look forward with optimism that the players he has brought in can gel and produce performances and get results. Dunstable Town FC under 12s Phoenix start the season strongly We are couple of months into the season, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our youth sponsors. It is a massive help, and we could not do it without them. It has been great to see some of the teams in action over the last month. We would like to say a big thank you to Chris White, our club photographer, who has started working his way through the youth teams, taking photos of their games and team pictures. So far, the 7s and 10s have been visited. Last Sunday it was great to see club chairman Andrew Madaras and Daniel Gould our first team goalkeeper, at Creasey Park having a look at the youth teams in action. A big thank you to them both. They watched both our under 12s teams and our under 14s Lions. Lastly, we would like to welcome Joe Le-Vien, who has joined our under 14s Lions as a coach and, has kindly agreed to coach our youth goalkeepers. Arrangements are being made and Joe will start after the school holidays.
