DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

JOE DEENEY

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all attached to Leighton Town ahead of today’s league clash. Leighton present a real challenge for us today and come into the game on good form. Their Manager Lee Bircham has recruited well over the summer and brings a side full of good players that will provide a tough examination of my group today. I always believe that we need to concentrate on ourselves and play to our strengths, as opposed to changing our philosophy for other teams.

I must start my programme notes about our supporters once again. The support you have shown this season and most notably in the last week has been nothing short of fantastic. We travelled to Colney Heath last Saturday which isn’t the easiest of places to get to and travelled in incredible numbers. Tuesday night away to Tring Athletic once again we travelled in great numbers. In a modern-day Britain where the cost of everything seems to increase on a daily basis, other than salaries, to see our supporters paying their hard-earned

money week in week out to support us is exceptionally humbling. The increase in club owners, sponsors and attendances personifies the unity and togetherness we are building at the club. Please keep this great support coming.

I have been delighted with our form so far this season. Whilst I am delighted for the player’s we are not in any way shape or form patting ourselves on the back. This league is tough this season and the minute we think we have cracked it; we will come down to earth with a big bang. So, there is no room for complacency. The games this season won’t come much tougher than today, so we need to back up our start with big performance.

Our performance against Colney Heath showed another side to our group, which I was delighted about. It was a day where so many things went wrong. We lost Kyle Davison-Gordon the previous week to a broken wrist, and we can’t wait to get him back. We didn’t have Ethan Creary or Benji Crilley, due to injury and then lost Terrence Muchineripi early to a knee injury, that we are awaiting the

outcome of. We were stretched and involved a shuffle around, but once again full credit to my players for their adaptability and the way they all stuck together. You have probably all heard me talk about what I call “A victim’s mentality”. I really struggle with people who become a victim of circumstances. A weak group on Saturday could have used all the things against us, become victims and rolled over. We certainly didn’t! We should have been 4-0 up at half time and had it have not been for 2 outstanding saves from their GK and a goal line clearance from their centre back, we would have been.

We went in 1-0 up after Joe SellersWest scored. We conceded a poor goal that allowed them to equalise in the 2nd half. A smashed ball forward from their GK down the slope with a tail wind led to us conceding a needless corner. It is the 1st goal we have conceded from a set play this year which was disappointing. Ticking into injury time, our fitness, persistence, and incredible desire led to our deserved winner. Kelvin OseiAddo showed composure 20 yards out to shift the ball under pressure and bury it low into the bottom right-hand corner. Anyone who witnessed the celebrations will know how together we all are!

Tuesday night saw a different type of opposition in Tring Athletic. Tring won the competition last season and I know they were keen to win it this season. They play a certain way and fair credit to them. They like to build from the back, rotate in midfield and play through you. The 1st 10 minutes caused us some problems. I thought tactically we were superb and got a well-deserved 1-0 win. Bar an incredible save from Connor Coulson we weren’t ever in any real danger. We nullified them and forced them to go more direct which we dealt with without any problems.

To a man we were excellent. I thought Ruairi Mills and Dan Naylor coming back in were excellent. They have been patient and credit to them justified why they are worthy of being here. It was great to see Isaac Olaleye back in a Dunstable Town shirt again and had an excellent game replacing our influential captain Alfie Osborne at half time. The squad depth continues to be a real headache for me, but I hope I keep having them! Every member of the squad is fighting hard to be in the team. The hardest thing is we can only pick 16 in the league so every week there is always several who are disappointed.

My 2 goalkeepers have been nothing short of exemplary and personify the spirit of this club. Charlie Jones and Connor Coulson have both been excellent. They have pushed each other every week and the support they have offered each other deserves a special mention. Of course, they both want to play, and neither are happy about not playing and nor would I want them to be. Rather than sulk and become victims they have got their heads down, worked hard and given me weekly headaches!

A final mention to our new recruit Andy Burrows who will be delivering our Talk of the Town Podcast. Andy has been to pretty much every game and is often seen supporting our Youth sides. His passion and the quality of his other podcasts means he is a great addition to the Dunstable army. His love of the Washington Commanders and having listened to his Podcasts for them, has seen the Commanders become my adopted NFL Team! Welcome Andy and look forward to getting on the 1st couple of episodes.

Enjoy today’s game.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

ANDREW MADARAS

Good afternoon, everyone and welcome to Creasey Park for today’s fixture against our near neighbours, Leighton Town. We especially welcome the playing and coaching staff and supporters of Leighton Town and with my Secretary’s hat on and member of the Secretary’s union, Leighton Town Secretary Roy Parker and with my Chairman’s hat on, our former Chairman, John McLaughlin. Irrespective of the result this afternoon we want Bedfordshire Step 5 football to be the winner with a competitive game to advertise far and wide the quality product both our Clubs provide.

Today’s match sponsor is Liz Jones who is Mayor of Dunstable and who has been incredibly supportive of the Club behind the scenes and came to one of our early Walking Football sessions last year. Liz has invited Farzana Kharawala, who is the Mayor of Leighton Buzzard and Lily Chan, owner, and proprietor

of the Coconut Garden on High Street South as her guests. I must admit a conflict of interests here, as I’ve known Lily for many years and can testify that the Coconut Garden is my favourite restaurant and if you’ve never been you don’t know what you’re missing. A very warm welcome to Liz, Iain, Lily & Farzana & her son.

This weekend marks the first anniversary of Joe & Kyle’s first match in charge of the First Team. We played away at Harefield and were heavily beaten 4-0. The transition that has taken place in the intervening 12 months has been nothing but remarkable. I can’t pay enough praise to Joe & Kyle for the work they have done and how they have transformed the whole culture and mentality of the First Team.

My good friend and our former Commercial Manager, Pete Mills best

“this weekend marks the first anniversary of Joe & Kyle’s first match in charge of the team. we played away at Harefield and were heavily beaten 4-0. the transition that has took place in the next 12 months has been nothing but remarkable.”

summed it up for me, when he said to Joe at the end of season party “I don’t go to football anymore wandering how many we’re going to get beaten by”

Joe has always said there will be “bumps in the road” and “success isn’t a straight line”, so it’s important that we keep a sense of proportion and perspective and remember this is going to be a long season and there will be twists and turns ahead but the bond that exists between the playing and coaching staff and the directors, volunteers and supporters means we win together, and we lose together, but we’re all on the same journey together.

Sadly, I do need to remind one or two supporters that derogatory homophobic verbal abuse aimed at opposition players and match officials is not only morally reprehensible but the easiest way to find yourself banned from Creasey Park. Thankfully society no longer tolerates racist abuse, but we need to up our game and call out homophobic slurs when they’re made. We need to be pro-active in our efforts to eradicate this type of language and have asked all our stewards and volunteers to be vigilant for any recurrence.

On a happier note, I want to welcome Andy Burrows to the social media team. Andy presents the Talk of the Town podcast. His interview with Joe this week is essential listening and gives us a great insight into Joe’s philosophy and management style.

This afternoon we’re asking you to support Minds2gether who are holding a bucket collection at the ground. Minds2gether is a peer support mental health group who meet every Wednesday and Friday. I had the genuine privilege to serve as a committee member for

a short time. The group is led by an inspirational lady called Sam who has devoted the last few years to building the group. We’re asking you to donate whatever you can to help Minds2gether continue their amazing work. Andy & Penny will be shaking their buckets so even if it’s only a few pence, please pop it in the bucket.

Our own group, Sphere at the Glider, also celebrated their first anniversary a couple of weeks ago. We’re smaller than Minds2gether but our heartfelt thanks go to Rupert Groves and his team at the Glider for their ongoing support.

This Monday is World Mental Health Day. Our programme, Improving the Lives of Others has as its central tenants, to help people improve their physical health and mental well-being. We do that by offering three different Walking Football groups, and two Friendship/ Support groups, Sphere and Chums & Crumbs, collaboratively with Titan PCN & SLL. All our groups are free to join and participate in and are paid for by using a proportion of our owners’ membership fees. A special welcome to the Vice President’s Club to Nigel Palmer who became a Platinum owner and to our 137th owner Nigel Trewin from Perth in Australia, who became a Gold owner.

Our Mental Health Ambassador/ Advocate, Yvonne Verla works with me on the Club’s mental health package of support and has written a superb article for the programme and website.

All from me for now. Thank you as always for your support, let’s get behind the lads today, show them our support and be a very vocal 12th man.

W ORLD M ENTAL hEALT h DAY

It’s a condition that will affect one in four of us at some stage in our lives. It can strike you when you least expect it to and has no respect for gender, sex, class, religion, race, or age.

For some it can be a response to a stressful life event whether it is a bereavement or divorce but for others it may have much deeper roots in upbringing and traumas experienced in formative years or have a background in genetics or the environment.

For some people the mere effort of getting out of bed in the morning and facing the day ahead can be as daunting as the thought of climbing Everest would be for most of us.

This is not just feeling fed up or upset, this is Churchill’s famous “Black Dog”, this is a sky full of dark clouds with no sunshine appearing day after day, week after week and month after month. This is the feeling that your life has no value and is worthless. This is life without happiness, pleasure or meaning.

The pervasive and intrusive thoughts that the world would be a better place without you being a part of it and your family and friends equally so, cause nearly six thousand people to take their own lives every year in the UK with many more times that number who attempt unsuccessfully to end their lives and an even greater number tormented by the thoughts of doing so.

For others the terrifying thoughts that other people want to do us harm, sometimes the people we love, care for, and trust the most or the experience of hearing voices and sounds that other

people don’t or the visual and tactile sensory disturbances that can make us feel vulnerable, exposed and alone.

There’s no single cause for mental illhealth and no single cure. Many people will experience one episode of ill-health but for others it can be a lifelong condition that will require a combination of talking therapies and prescribed medication.

For the past five years, Dunstable Town FC have championed the work that Mind BLMK do in our local community. We’ve put their logo on the front of our playing kits, raised awareness by placing advertising boards around the ground, raised funds and offered free training sessions. We now have the Mind BLMK logo on the back of our shirts along with the tagline “We’ve got your backs”

This is our second season as part of the CALM Collective (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and on the local front we support Minds2gether which is a mental health peer support group.

Every Monday we have our own support group, Sphere at the Glider, thanks to the very generous support of The Glider and Asda Dunstable.

We may only be a small club, but we have big ambitions to raise awareness of mental health problems, remove the stigma associated with becoming unwell, and continue our work as part of our Community Benefit Society status to make mental health awareness part and parcel of the Club’s DNA.

Leighton Town, who were known as Leighton United between 1922 and 1963, were formed in 1885. They were mainly involved in local leagues until the outbreak of the Great War and were winners of the Leighton and District League on several occasions.

Leighton were one of the original members of the South Midland League in 1922 – which at the time was known as the Bedfordshire County League. They were also members of the Spartan League between 1922/23 and 1951/52, but their only successes being the Spartan League Division 2 title in 1923/24 and 1927/28. They were Bedfordshire Senior Cup winners in 1926/27.

In 1952, they became a founder member of the Hellenic League, but after two disappointing seasons, moved to the South Midlands League. In 1965/66 season however, the Premier Championship sat in the Leighton Town Boardroom. The club then rejoined the Spartan League in 1967/68. Leighton proceeded to consolidate their League success by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for three successive seasons in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Unfortunately, some of the successful players moved on to other clubs, and Leighton’s fortunes again declined.

A move to the United Counties League proved disastrous and after just two seasons, the club rejoined the South Midlands League. During the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Leighton were unable to capture the success of the ‘60’s. In 1990/1991 the First Team won the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy and the

O’Brien’s Premier Division Cup, both for the first time in the club’s history.

The 1991/2 season was one of the club’s best. The South Midlands Premier Division title, which had eluded the club for so long, was won, and with it a place in the Isthmian League.

1992/3 saw the Club’s success continue when they won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1970. The Club missed out on promotion in their first Isthmian League season by just a single point, but the Youth Team retained the County Cup.

1995/6 saw the First Team win promotion to Division 2 of the Isthmian League, whilst at the same time retaining the Buckingham Charity Cup.

In the 1996/7 season, Leighton won the Isthmian League Associated Members Trophy for the first time. 1998/99 saw the return of the Associated Members Trophy & the Buckingham Charity Cup.

Season 2003/04 Leighton won the Ryman Isthmian Second Division title. They were also named Ryman Division Two Team of the Year, and Paul Burgess was awarded Manager of the Year. They also reached the Fifth round of the FA Vase, and the final of the Beds Senior Cup, before losing to Andover and Arlesey Town respectively.

The 2004-05 season saw the club placed in The Southern League East Division and finished in a creditable tenth place. They also won the Buckinghamshire Charity Cup. The Reserves won the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup and the U18’s won the SCYFL League Shield.

The 05-06 Season saw the Club progress again, improving on the year before, as they finished 8th in The Southern League Western Division. After a poor start, League results improved and the side only suffered four defeats from the start of November until the end of March, a play-off place just eluding them.

After three excellent victories interest in the FA.Trophy competition ended with a single goal defeat to eventual semifinalists, Borehamwood. The Club also reached the Beds Senior Cup Final, but sadly they finished as Runners Up.

The Club were relocated to the Southern League Midland Division for 06-07 season but only one League win in the first six games and early exits in the two FA Competitions cost Paul Burgess his job in September. He was replaced by former Wycombe professional Keith Scott, results did improve but it was a disappointing season, although Town did win the Bucks Senior Charity Cup.

The 07-08 started brightly with the first League defeat not coming until midOctober. Three wins in the FA Cup saw the Club reach the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in its history. A 3-0 defeat to Conference South, Havant and Waterlooville finally ended the run. Keith Scott then left in December to join

Windsor and Eton. In January 2008, Assistant Manager Sean Downey was appointed as First Team Manager and did a splendid job as the Club ended their League season in 9th place, winning the Bucks Charity Cup and reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup once more.

The 08/09 Season the First Team finished 8th in the Southern League, Midland Division, achieving their highest points total to date at that level.

The 09/10 season saw Leighton once again finish in the top half of the table, when they finished in 9th place and they also lost the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final to Southern League rivals, Arlesey Town after penalties. Season 2010/2011, saw Town finish in 7th place in the League, gaining 69 points, their best performance since joining the Southern Football League.

The 2011/2012 season saw Leighton finish in their lowest position for several years. 2012/13 was also very disappointing for the First Team as they finished in 20th place. 2015/2016 After 3 disappointing seasons Leighton finished the season in the bottom two of the Southern League Central Division and were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League where they had last played in the 1991/92 season.

L EI gh TON TOWN

2016/2017 was a disappointing season with the club struggling for much of the time after yet another Managerial Change. Things did pick up towards the end of the season and they eventually finished in 16th place. 2017/18 The club retained Scott Reynolds as Manager and finished 4th in the League and reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Vase. Gates improved and it was their best season for about 8 years.

2018/2019 saw Scott Reynolds resign in the close season and Danny Nicholls was appointed as Manager but left in October due to work commitments. The Club then appointed Joe Sweeney and Paul Copson, who had previously won the Premier division title with London Colney as their new Management Team.

2019/2020 was a good season for the Club as they again reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase and after a slow start in the League the team started to find some good form and slowly climbed up the table.

2020/2021 and for the third time in 4 seasons reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase but sadly lost out to 2 late penalties. An indifferent start in the League meant they could not quite gain the points needed to gain promotion in a Covid affected season.

The following season Leighton Town were hoping to be challenging at the top end of the table, which saw them finish 4th. The disappointment of their league form was compensated with an appearance in the Beds Senior Cup final, which saw them beat Bedford Town on penalties.

Three times in the first half the Heath defence cleared the ball off the line and on several occasions, Connor Sansom made acrobatic saves to stop Dunstable extending their one goal lead. Joe Sellers-West pounced on a rebound from a free-kick to put the Blues ahead in the 14th minute. Such was Dunstable’s first half dominance that even neutral observers said at half-time that the game should have been put to bed.

Sansom made a great save a couple of minutes later from a Dunstable head following a corner. The game wasn’t even 20 minutes old, but already the spectators had received excellent value for their money.

Shortly before the half hour, Terrence Muchineripi needed to be carried from the field with a bad knee injury which is likely to keep him out for 2-3 months. Physio, Adam Ashton’s treatment room has a growing list of players, and the wisdom of Head Coach, Joe Deeney’s decision to try and keep a squad of 20 players becomes evident.

Kelvin Osei-Addo replaced Terrence and found himself in Referee Stuart Smith’s notebook 10 minutes later.

Kelvin brought out another great save by Sansom three minutes later following great work by Tolu Ikuyinminu.

Colney Heath gave notice of their intent early in the second half with a well worked move which ended with the woodwork saving Dunstable’s lead. Parity was restored on the hour mark before Kelvin Osei-Addo’s late strike which flew past Sansom into the bottom left-hand corner, to send the 60 or so

Dunstable fans into wild raptures of delight.

This was the largest Dunstable away following I’d seen for a long time, and with overall attendances at home matches now over 200, the good weather and 20-mile drive made this an inviting fixture to attend.

Colney Heath were relegated last season from Step 4 and have struggled so far this season to get to grips with Step 5 football. Their problem is not at the back. They have the 6th best defence in the League. Their difficulty has been in front of goal and have only scored three goals in the League all season.

Remell Stirling was the Blues Man of the Match with a fantastic display. With Terrence’s departure Remell took on an uncharacteristic defensive role for him but did his job superbly and won plaudits from the Blues faithful.

This was a battling team performance and all eleven players, and three substitutes earned their spurs for a gritty second half display, which although lacked the number of chances they’d created showed the absolute importance of playing right up to the 90 minutes.

Owen McConnell came on to make his debut in stoppage time. Just 17 years old, Owen didn’t flinch in the heart of the battle and won his headers and looking very much at home within the team.

Kelvin’s winner was a well-placed shot from outside the area and with defenders around him. It came too late for Colney Heath to muster any more significant attacks.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 33 SSM f L p REMIER DI v ISION

U 13s p h OENIX

The lads made it two wins out of three with a 5-0 win. It was not the performance Coach Wayne Upton was looking for, but the hunger and desire was exactly what he would have been pleased with. It was not the best of starts as the team lost centre back Mohammed Zeidan due to illness so in came the talented Taylor Doult to partner Dejon Garwood and the partnership worked straight away with the teams’ captain George Lewington commanding and shouting out instructions and organising the teams back four to keep the defence solid.

The Blues went 1-0 up when man of the match Szymon Adamczyk who carved open the Sacred Heart defence to put Brandon Upton clean through one on one with the keeper which Brandon calmly slotted the ball home. Sacred occasional posed a threat but the back four and George kept it tight at the back

which allowed the midfield to try and take control of the game with the lively Naishayn Williams who soon made it 2-0 to the Blues.

In the second half the Blues made changes. Leo Martin broke the play up very well and got us back on the front foot and the talented Liam Mctague causing problems with his skills and holding the ball up. Mctague walked off the pitch with a second half hat-trick and good performances from Max Neville, Cairon Rowe, and Bonito Abbott, all playing out of position when needed, and taking one for the team all the players dug in.

Over the course of the game last season we hit some speed bumps and didn’t see some games out but today showed sometimes you need to win ugly as long as our captain George Lewington in between the sticks and our strong defence keep it tight.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 35 DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUT h SECTION

S p ONSORED WALK

The first of our sponsored walks this season will be taking place next Saturday. Walking from creasey park to pancake Lane is approximately 26km, or in old money about 16 miles. This year we will be raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and The OLLIE Foundation, to also purchase a pitch side defibrillator for use at Dunstable Town matches and to help the club’s support groups and activities, including our walking football sessions, Sphere at the Glider and Chums and Crumbs at Dunstable Library.

Below is a rough itinerary of our day. No good walk should be attempted without fuelling first, so breakfast at Tony’s Café is recommended. We will then approach Creasey Park for the start and walk over Dunstable Downs heading south, through Markyate and on for a halfway pint at the spotted dog in Flamstead.

From Flamstead we will pick up the Nickey Line at Redbourn, which follows the old Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead branch line, closed in 1979. This will bring us within striking distance of Pancake Lane and a well-earned pint at the Leather bottle.

Tonys Café – 07:30 – 08:15

Creasey Park – 08:30

Spotted Dog – 11:30 – 12:00

Leather Bottle – 14:15 – 14:45

Pancake Lane – 15:00

You are more than welcome to join us at any stage. A few supporters are doing the second leg of the journey from the Spotted Dog. If you cannot join us on this mission but would like to support us, donations, small and exceedingly large, can be sent via our crowdfunder page at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dtfc2

After the international break, this weeks games saw the Arsenal victorious in the North London derby, Manchester City, well Haaland and Foden, smash Manchester United 6-3 and Brighton get a credible draw at Anfield.

Invitational League news, the top two had poor weeks and the Crilley’s, Joe’s FPL fan and Benji’s CrillDogs took full advantage and leapt into first and second respectively.

Another team to accrue 3 figures was 7th placed Charlie Nutley, whose first XI picked up 103 points

WALKIN g f OOTBALL

With the club’s restructure as a Community Benefit Society, one of our missions was to offer free activities to the local community. One of the first groups we established, celebrated their 1st birthday recently with a special guest.

Michael Watts, Community Champion at ASDA Dunstable, presented the team with a cheque from the ASDA Foundation, an independent charity with more than 30 years’ history of helping people in local communities. Michael presented the cheque to our team in recognition of their contribution towards transforming communities and improving lives.

Health Benefits

Walking football is an excellent way of staying fit and healthy. Studies have shown it can be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension and that it can produce high aerobic activity with marked improvements in fat oxidation and aerobic power. Importantly, benefits

are felt whilst deriving enjoyment, which makes people far more likely to exercise.

Mental health benefits

There are also psychological and mental health advantages to playing walking football, namely high levels of personal reward and satisfaction with reduced levels of stress and exertion while playing, despite working physically hard.

Social benefits

Walking football also gives the community the chance to become involved in something they really enjoy, make new friends, form lasting relationships with like-minded people and generally improve their social circle and overall quality of life, often making them feel less isolated and more a part of the wider community.

If you are interested in hearing more about walking football or want to attend any of the sessions please contact team manager, Ian Bateman.

the pieman (@_therealpieman) is a tottenham hotspur fan who has attended thousands of matches and hundreds of grounds throughout the united kingdom and europe. this week he visits Little oakley Fc.

Little Oakley 1 Park View 1 (4-2 on penalties) - FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round

Little Oakley is a village in Essex, located on the western outskirts of Harwich. The parish population at the time of the 2011 census was 1,171. A fourth century Roman villa was excavated at Little Oakley between 1951 and 1975. Just north-east of the village is Little Oakley Channel Deposit, a geological site of a former channel of the River Thames around 575,000 years ago. The football club was formed in 1947 as Little Oakley War Memorial. The players changed in Mr Ingle’s Barn behind Foulton Hall, accessing the pitch via a gate in the corner of the field. The club joined the Harwich & district Junior League in 1949, progressing to the Tendring Hundred League, after which they joined the Colchester & East Essex League in 1953. The club’s name was simplified to Little Oakley in 1974 and

they won the Harwich Junior Cup in 1982, retaining it the following year. Via the Suffolk & Essex Border Combination and the Eastern Counties League, Division One South, the club was promoted to the Essex Senior League in 2021.

I was offered a lift to the eastern fringes of Essex and the journey via the A414, A12 and A120 was trouble free. With plenty of time before the match, an opportunity was taken to revisit the Bottle Kiln (JD Wetherspoon) at neighbouring

Dovercourt for refreshment. My arrival at The Memorial Ground a little over an hour before kick-off, allowed plenty of time for photographs before adjourning to the smart clubhouse for a pint (Adnams Broadside) and I was able to purchase the match programme here. The rapid rise of the club in recent seasons and subsequent promotion to the ninth tier of English football, has required some considerable investment in the facilities at the ground. An impressive covered seated stand is the main feature. This structure is situated along the same side of the pitch as the dugouts. The latter are central to the pitch with the former a little further along, towards the open end of the ground. The opposite side of the ground is open and backs on to the gardens of residential properties. I got the impression that the football club have a good relationship with most of their neighbours and witnessed a couple of stray balls being retrieved. The remaining end of the ground is that closest to the clubhouse, changing rooms and car park. At this end there are two small, but adequate, covered terrace areas for spectators. Sometimes you witness a match that doesn’t quite live up to expectations and I believe this certainly fits that description. I thought the referee failed

to control proceedings and an early yellow card for a Park View player for a high boot showed poor judgement. The player did not make contact and actually pulled out of the challenge. Both sides struggled on a hard surface until a wonder strike from Dan Rowe put the home side ahead.

The visitors came into the match more in the second period and whilst there was just a single goal margin, they still had a chance. As the match progressed, it followed a similar disjointed pattern to the first half. In the closing minutes Park View were awarded a penalty, duly converted by Obed Sunkwah and at 17:02, the final whistle signalled full time. A penalty shoot-out determined that the hosts qualified for the next round having converted all four of their penalties, as opposed to two for the visitors. The Memorial Ground is a lovely setting to watch football and this community club appears to be thriving at the new level.
