from the boardroom Winds of change Welcome all to our supporters, guests, players, and officials for today’s game against Leverstock Green. I’m Gary Levy, having held probably every position in the club for the last 20 years from 1st team coach, vice chairman to groundsman, I was delighted when Andrew offered me the director of football position when I returned from France early 2021. The previous three seasons had seen a steady decline in the first team’s fortunes dropping through the leagues and without Andrew, Matt and the then committee’s massive efforts the Club would unlikely be here for us all today.
engage with the package purchased providing vital funds for the club. Finally, we soon will be announcing exciting news with regards our under 18 team for next season providing the perfect pathway for young players to progress and represent the first team, I know they will get your full support on a Thursday night. Have a great Non-League Day.
Gaz
Having had a poor start to the current season I realised that massive changes needed to be made, and with the help and support from the current directors the appointment of Joe Deeney and Kyle Durcan was made, who’s ambitions, and enthusiasm matched the clubs perfectly. Over the last four months a positive and new energy has taken over the club with performances on the pitch giving our loyal band of supporters something to finally cheer about. I personally feel that due to coaching staff’s skills the current squad are three months ahead of schedule and the plans for next season looks bright. Our Media team have worked tirelessly promoting the club on social media allowing our far-flung fans to stay in touch with the club’s games and updates along with providing a platform for our commercial sponsors to fully DUNSTABLE TOWN v Leverstock Green - 3

Welcome to the management, players, committee, and supporters of Leverstock Green for today’s clash here at Creasey Park. Leverstock Green will be another tough opponent for us with them sitting 7th in the league. It gives us another stern test and a measurement of where we are currently and the roadmap to where we want to get to. I am hopeful we will get another good crowd today for Non-League Day and hope to put on another entertaining game of football for you all. As I have mentioned before the increase in crowds since our arrival has been great to see and hope with our remaining games that we can keep the excellent support going for a strong end of season finish. Kyle and I were really pleased with our victory on penalties against Arlesey on Tuesday night. We went into the game with several injured and as I have said loads of times our attitude is one man’s disappointment is another man’s opportunity. We went into the game missing Liam McCrohan, Jamie Nicholls, Joe SellersWest who were injured in addition to Dan Naylor who was carrying a knock from Saturday as well as Jack Percy. We are hopeful at the time of writing of being able to get the majority back for Saturday. Unfortunately, Liam McCrohan will be unavailable due to the hamstring injury he sustained against New Salamis. Liam has been outstanding for us and personifies exactly the type of player we want here next season. His levels of commitment and defensively consistent performances will make him a miss for any team. We wish him well and are sincerely hopeful he will return before the season’s end. Liam knows how highly we think of him here and are looking forward to

continuing our journey next season. We are also hopeful of being able to welcome back our skipper Jamie Nicholls after a recent foot injury. His influence around the group is of huge importance and we felt his absence against both Hadley and New Salamis. Regarding the Arlesey game I was really pleased with our overall performance. We started the game well on the front foot and with a far greater intensity with and without the ball than we did on Saturday against New Salamis. I was personally delighted for Kelvin OseiAddo to get his 1st goal for the club, and it was some goal. We bought Kelvin into the group in November and he unfortunately picked up a hamstring injury shortly after. We got him back a month later however unfortunately he broke down. Kelvin has worked extremely hard to get back to fitness, I have been extra cautious with him for the simple reason I really believe in him. If Kelvin stays injury free and gets even fitter than we have an outstanding forward to add to our group. Kelvin showed moments on Tuesday night that we see every week at training and brings a different dynamic to our attacking line. There were so many pleasing performances on Tuesday, and it has given us a real selection headache. Headaches are never nice for Managers but if I had to choose one, I would always go with too many good players than not enough. It is the hardest part of the job leaving players out especially with our current group that are so desperate to play week in week out. Joe Mead returning to fitness has been a big boost for us and I thought he was outstanding on Tuesday. I was delighted for Joe to score the winning penalty. I have known Joe a long
24/03/2022 19:04:15
manager’s notes joe deeney We have learned much about our players, about the level & what it will take next season to get us out of the division time and I know if we can keep him fit then we have an excellent player in the group. I was also delighted for Joe Parmley and Ruairi Mills that both put in excellent performances. Both have worked so hard to get themselves into the team and have been so patient for their opportunity which they both took and add to an already good group. We are 4 weeks from the end of the league season and whilst I am sure there are some players out there planning their summer getaways and preparing for barbeque season. There will be none of that with our group. We have achieved our primary objective for this season which was to get us off the foot of the table. There are so many more objectives we want to achieve with this football club. I was incredibly disappointed with our 1st half display at New Salamis as it was the opposite to what we expect from the group. I did say upon our arrival we would get clear of trouble, and I did also say there would be bumps in the road. We have lost to 2 of the top 3 teams in the last 2 weeks which some might accept, but not us. I despise losing and will do all we can to ensure losses are never accepted at the club. Every one of our squad has been given the challenge to ensure they are here next season. Every member of our squad will get opportunities in the remaining 7 league fixtures as well as the cup games left. This part of the season I would describe as business critical for everyone within the squad. We never allow sentiment to cloud judgement when it comes to players. The last 5 and a half months for us as a group has been a great experience. We have met some wonderful people, thoroughly enjoyed the unwavering support we have
leverstock-print.indd 5
received from our directors, supporters, and volunteers. I have personally never enjoyed my time as a coach more than I have done since joining Dunstable Town. We have learned so much about our players, about the level and about what it will take next season to get us out of the division. It certainly won’t be easy as every manager I seem to speak to says they are going for promotion next season! I can’t stand mediocrity and we certainly didn’t join Dunstable Town to be a midtable Step 5 club. One thing supporters can be guaranteed is that we will do all that we can as a management team to ensure next season is the season we see even more smiles, even more Dunstable Town hats, scarves and most importantly more points! When we first joined the club potential new signings ridiculed our suggestion of joining Dunstable Town and were happy to let me know why they wouldn’t be joining us in a relegation scrap. Several of those players are now ringing me regularly asking me to join next season and be a part of the club. I will let you guess my reply! One of my many personal mantras when recruiting players and I am sure the lads will be bored of hearing it is “Are you as effective in a freezing February as you are during an August heatwave?” We promised sweat on the shirts and full credit to the lads they deliver it week in week out. Please keep the fantastic support coming for us all it makes such a difference. Enjoy the game.

L
L Leverstock Green Football Club was formed around 1895. The first match reports appeared on January 4th, 1896, in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers. The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Kings Langley and Potten End. The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timberbuilt changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960’s by the existing clubhouse and changing rooms.
On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Club’s landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold. The club remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League. By the mid 1970’s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail and the installation of training lights. The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years.

In 1991 the Club were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners-up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council. Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09. Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United. The club has twice reached the Third Round of the FA Vase, in seasons 2006/07 and 2018/19. Leverstock Green entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers. County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runnersup four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road. The under-18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non-league pyramid
include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner-Eley (Royston Town, St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England nonleague side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player. The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed. Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long-serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day. Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe mid-table finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid-19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end. For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks has been appointed. The club has increased its commitment to youth development by joining the Eastern Junior Alliance and will be running an under-15 side this season. Three club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years’ service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was long-serving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Brian stood down from his role as secretary in 2020, having twice been honoured with awards from the Spartan South Midlands League.

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE! leverstock-print.indd 25

young guns.
it is coming to the business end of the season Our under 14s Lions sadly lost to a very good Arlesey Town in the semifinals of the County Cup. A great achievement for Gary, Joe and the lads who also still are in with a chance of retaining their Chiltern Youth League Division 1 title.
Again, we are on the lookout for help with our youth committee if anyone has a skill who thinks could help us, please get in touch with our youth secretary kristy.dunstabletownfc@gmail.com
The under 14s Tiger are in a great position in the Chiltern Youth League Division 2. Let’s hope Karl and the boys can get over the line come the end of the season. Also our under 12s Phoenix have three games remaining and showed their class last week giving league winners Wixam Wanderers a guard of honour but got back to winning ways with a fine 5-3 win against Brickhill Wanderers. Another fine moment as one of our youth players George missed his first game of the season for the under 12s Phoenix, due to Covid but after their game against Brickhill the team video called George and the smile on his face was a great to see.

tuesday 22nd march • Premier Division Cup CREASEY PARK • attendance 121 • Andrew Madaras A thrilling match settled by “kicks from the penalty mark” as the FA rulebook likes to call a good old-fashioned penalty shoot-out, saw Dunstable Town progress into the third round of the SSML Premier Division Cup with the reward being another home tie on Thursday 21st April against Ardley Utd, who by coincidence, will be our opponents less than 48 hours later in our final League game of the season. So, for the second time in less than a fortnight, Joe Deeney’s men have got the better of their Bedfordshire rivals. On the 12th of March, the Blues won away 2 – 0 at the New Lamb Meadow, and although Kelvin Osei-Addo struck a delightful 13th minute goal, Dunstable needed the heroics of Dan Gould to progress into the next round. With the Blues staring defeat in the face, Gould made two magnificent penalty saves to leave Joe Mead with the task of dispatching his penalty to get the win. Mead looked the calmest man in Creasey Park as he struck the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards. Dunstable were forced into several changes. Liam McCrohan, Jamie Nicholls, Joe SellersWest all out injured with Dan Naylor, Terrence Muchineripi and Kyle Faulkner carrying knocks & niggles and needing to start on the bench. The changes meant welcome starts for Joe Mead, Joe Parmley, Ruari Mills and Kelvin Ossei-Addo. All four have waited patiently for their opportunity to show the fans what they’re about. All four have shown tremendous loyalty
and all four justified Joe & Kyle’s decision to start them on Tuesday. It was Kelvin though who made the biggest first impression. Skipper for the night, J’Ardell Stirling intercepted a ball in the middle of the park and fed the ball through to Dan Trif overlapping on his right. Dan beat two men and crossed for Kelvin who turned on a sixpence and rifled the ball home left footed with precision and power. Moments before that he’d shown speed and power to lose his man and fire narrowly over. However as hard as they tried Dunstable could not find the elusive second goal. There was no shortage of effort or desire, but Arlesey managed to keep the back door shut, and while that’s the case then it only takes one well taken chance to get back into the game. With somewhat predictability that was what happened just after the hour mark when Gould could only stand and watch as Jake Davis equalized from 8 yards out following good work down the left-hand side and a clever cut back. Dunstable made a double substitution. Kyle Faulkner replaced Kelvin Ossei-Addo, and Terrence Muchineripi replaced Benji Gray. Momentum swung back in favour of the home side but despite the lion’s share of possession, they couldn’t find the back of the net again. However, despite the lottery of penalties, Dunstable managed to come through the test of nerves and secure their place in the next round v Ardley Utd. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Leverstock Green - 35

26 March 1986 - Scotland’s Only Centurion On 26 March 1986, Liverpool striker Kenny Dalglish won his 100th cap for Scotland in a 3-0 win over Romania. To date, he is the only player to reach that milestone for the Scottish national team. He received his first call-up in November 1971, coming on as a substitute in a Euro ‘72 qualifying victory over Belgium. Although it took him over a year to get his first goal, he eventually scored 30 times for Scotland to match the record set by Denis Law.
Strachan opened the day’s scoring in the 18th minute and was followed shortly by defender Richard Gough (27’). Gough’s partner in defense, Roy Aitken, added the third in the 81st minute, his only goal in 57 appearances for Scotland. Dalglish, meanwhile, went on to earn two more Scottish caps before retiring from the national team later that year.
Against Romania, manager Alex Ferguson gave the armband Dalglish, his seventh and last time to captain the national team. Scotland’s starting XI included nine future managers, including two--Dalglish and midfielder Graeme Souness--who went on to take charge of Liverpool. Dalglish also managed Celtic during his career, as did another teammate of his that day, midfielder Gordon Strachan.
