inside the boardroom what is a Director of Partnerships? Welcome back to Creasey Park to our supporters, and a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters from London Colney. We want to extend our unbeaten run but know that London Colney will prove worthy opponents. I’m Neil Barker. The club has really moved on since I last penned programme notes, then as Chairman and now as Director of Partnerships. It’s really good to be back on board. Before trying to give some insight as to what this role entails, it would be remiss of me not to reference the extraordinary game last Saturday against Broadfields. In tragic circumstances I was proud with how the club remembered the life of Aaron Bateman. It was truly humbling but entirely appropriate and will long live in the memory. I hope and pray that that it gave Ian and his family some comfort and solace at this most difficult time. I’m not one for grand titles, more concerned with what is done rather than what the title says. That said, for goodness sake, what is a Director of Partnerships? To be honest we are not so big a club that everyone has a clearly defined role, and so often we just need to roll up our sleeves and do what needs to be done. Inevitably there will be some crossover with what the other directors are doing, but if I was to try to capture what I will be concentrating on, it’s partnerships with supporters, sponsors, local businesses, local government, and schools.
50/50 on match days, expand the membership of the 100 Club, and to increase the number of businesses that have signed up to our Blue Card scheme, whereby they offer discounts to the club’s increasing number of owners. I will be supported by Peter Bottom on the Blue Card Scheme. In addition, we want to grow our ownership base and I’m pleased to say that another former Chairman Alex Alexandrou will support this activity. Being a club owner is a privilege, and an opportunity to enjoy some of the real benefits that this brings. Other activities at the planning stage are the reintroduction of the Friendly Football Tournaments that were held at Weatherfield School, and the hosting of Sponsors evenings which give us the opportunity to update and thank existing sponsors, as well as introducing the club to prospective sponsors. So, there’s plenty to be getting on with to ensure that we can give Joe, Kyle and the team the best chance to be successful on the pitch. Finally, I know you’ll get behind the onfield team this afternoon. They love the support and atmosphere that you create.
Neil Barker
Partnership is about building something that lasts. This means that we need to be trustworthy, transparent, supportive, and visible. Immediate priorities will be to increase the awareness of DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Colney - 3

Welcome to the management, committee, players, and supporters of London Colney ahead of this afternoon’s game. We welcome back Jimmy Hartley who is the current captain of London Colney. Jimmy is an experienced forward for the level and one that we know will present our defenders with a tough test today. We wish Jimmy well just not too well today! We come into the game looking to extend our 12-league game unbeaten run and are well aware of the challenge that today presents. Like a lot of clubs in our League they have recently undergone a managerial change and will be a different side to the one we faced in November at the start of our run. London Colney presents a tough challenge for us today and it is imperative that we ensure our performance levels are where they need to be. We were delighted with the outcome of last Saturday’s game. 3 points, a clean sheet and all 3 goals scored at the newly named Aaron Bateman stand. I don’t think we could have written it any better on the day. The game was emotional for everyone involved with the Dunstable Town family and the win meant so much on home soil in front of Aaron’s family. In terms of atmosphere, it was the best I have experienced to date at Creasey Park. Whilst emotionally challenging, seeing the celebrations, the tributes and smiles on faces was priceless. The chance to speak to Aaron’s Dad Ian at full time and bring a smile to Aaron’s family even for only a brief time was incredible. Ian has been inspirational to us all for the way he has tackled such adversity. I am sure we can all learn so much more from Ian. Full credit to everyone who attended on the day, the support in the Aaron Bateman stand

felt like the supporters were trying to suck the ball into the goal. I was immensely proud last week of everyone associated with our club. The club has a great family feel and the togetherness is so evident both on and off the pitch. Aaron Bateman will always be one our own. The message from a lot of Aaron’s family and friends is that they will be down to watch us more frequently and we welcome them with open arms and hope to keep winning in front of Aaron’s stand. We were nowhere near our best but ultimately were clinical in both boxes at the big moments of the game. If ever there was a game to personify how together everyone at the club is it was Saturday. The result was a fitting tribute to a wonderful young man and his legacy will live on through his wonderful family. Thank you to everyone who came to the game to support us on Saturday. Your support was remarkable and there is and will only ever be one Aaron Bateman. Today also marks another tribute for Paul Kennedy who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Paul is the best friend of our captain Jamie Nicholls and I have personally seen how hard it has been for Jammers. Paul is someone I used to play football with and against many years ago in the days where I had two normal ears and hair. I hadn’t seen Paul for many years, but it is such a sad loss. I never ever saw Paul other than smiling and his loss will be felt by so many people who knew and loved Paul. I know how instrumental Paul was in getting Jammers back playing football. I am so glad that Paul encouraged Jammers to return to playing football because he has played a massive role in our recent rise and long may that continue.
04/03/2022 02:14:55
notes from the bench It promises to be a very busy six weeks between now and the end of the season The strength of courage shown by Jammers during the hardest of times in his life has been immeasurable. His brief absence from the dressing room was felt by us all. Jammers has been someone that has really galvanised the dressing room with his personality. To have him back to full fitness and able to lead us again gives the management, his teammates, the supporters, and everyone a huge lift. Today we will ensure we do all we can to put on another fitting tribute to Paul Kennedy. Jammers has been a credit to himself and his best friend. The way he has honoured Paul has been incredible and we are all immensely proud of him. We have 11 league games remaining in addition to the cup games. We as a group are determined to ensure that we don’t get into end of season mode as there is still a lot of work to do. I have said it before when we arrived on a meagre 6 points and in a trouble at the foot of the table, we knew we had a lot of work to do. Recruitment and retention were critical to give us a chance. Kyle and I stand by our decisions and must credit our directors for allowing us to be aggressive moving players on and bringing in our own. Our recruitment model was always about good people first, then them as footballers. We have had many opportunities to bring in talented footballers but weren’t sure around the attitude. We have such a close-knit group of players that we will not do anything to disrupt the harmony within. The relationship our players have with our sponsors, directors, supporters, and each other, speaks volumes about them as people. We are by no means getting carried away with ourselves and understand how tough the next 11 games will be, starting today against London Colney. You can never guarantee results in football but what
london-colney-print.indd 5
we can guarantee is hard work and maximum effort. Last week was not a 3-0 game I felt it was harsh on Broadfields, but I have seen us play better and only get a point. It promises to be a very busy 6 weeks between now and the end of the season. It will give opportunities to use our entire squad and for every player to stake a claim to be here next season. It is a great selection headache for us to have at present as we can only pick 11. The training intensity makes it a challenge every single week to work out which 4 players sadly miss out in the 16 altogether. Keeping a group of hungry players happy is never easy. The positive from every negative is that we do not want players to be comfortable. We have anything ranging from 25 to 33 training every week with players desperate to be a part of this great club. Thank you again to you all for your amazing support week in and week out. Keep it coming, it really does make a huge difference. Enjoy today’s game.

L The London Colney Football Club was formed in 1907, playing at Whitehorse Lane until moving to its present ground at Cotlandswick, London Colney in 1976. The Club played in the Mid Herts League until the mid-fifties, when it joined the Herts County League. The Club has enjoyed many successes over the years with the 1st team winning the Premier Division League 3 times between 1986 and 1990, and the reserves winning the Reserve Division 4 times between 1987 and 1992. In 1992 the Club moved to the South Midlands League where in the first season the 1st Team became runners up in the Senior Division and the Reserves won the Division 1 Reserves section. Further successes came between 1993 and 1998 with the 1st Team winning the O’Brian Butcher Challenge Cup, The Herts Charity Shield, The Herts Centenary Trophy, The Premier Division Cup, and gaining promotion to the Premier Division. The Reserves also did well during this time and in
1998 won The Reserves Challenge Trophy. In the 1998/99 season, the South Midlands League amalgamated with the Spartan League to form the Minerva Spartan South Midlands League and London Colney finished 3rd in the Premier Division. The Blue Boys had the title within their grasp after a brilliant 11 match winning streak between October and December and they remained in the top two throughout the final weeks of the season only to be pipped at the post on the final day of the season by Barkingside and Potters Bar Town. This disappointment was eased a few days later when they beat Hoddesdon Town 1-0 to win the Herts Charity Shield. The Reserves had a brilliant season winning the Reserve League and the reserved cup comfortably. This was also the year that The Spartan South Midlands League Management committee made first Team Manager Mick Wright Manager of the Year for the 1998/99 season.

The 1999/2000 season saw Malcolm Doctor join Mick Wright as a joint manager of the 1st Team. They were finalists in both the Challenge Trophy and the Premier Division Cup only being beaten in penalty shoot outs in both matches. This year London Colney was once again a competitor in the FA Vase and reached the last sixteen losing 4-3 to Eccles Hill United who travelled from Yorkshire for the match.
2004/05 saw Mick Wright stepping down as Manager leaving John Templeton in sole charge. After a very good start, when they won 7 league games in a row, they seemed to lose their way and finished a disappointing 11th in the league. However, they fared better in the Challenge Trophy and were finalists but were well beaten by Hillingdon Borough 4-1 on the night.
In the 2001/2002 season, London Colney saw its greatest successes yet with the 1st Team winning the League with a ten-point difference as the highest in the league’s history. They lost only two games; scored a massive 119 goals; had a goal difference of 87 after going unbeaten for the first 27 league games. They went top after just three games and maintained domination apart from a few days in December, won 28 of their 38 games, and provided the league’s leading scorer through Gary Sippetts who bagged an incredible 45 strikes. London Colney were also runners up in the Herts Senior Trophy, the only team in the league to ever reach that position, only narrowly losing to Borehamwood 3-2 in a very hard-fought match. They also won the Challenge Trophy and were semi-finalists in the Premier Division Cup. These achievements were rewarded with their Managers, Malcolm Doctor and Mick Wright being awarded the Managers of the Year Trophy.
The 2005/06 season saw a new Management Team of Nigel Tester, Kevin Bland, and Vince Buck without much success with the 1st Team finishing 14th in the league but having a good FA Vase Cup run.
The 2002/03 season what a difference a year makes whilst not expecting the same successes as the previous season the loss of many of their players to other clubs meant a disastrous start to the season. They then lost Malcolm Doctor who resigned early in the season. However, thanks to John Templeton stepping into the breach to join Mick They managed to finish the season a creditable 6th in the league. 2003/04 season saw several of their players returning to the club and with an optimistic outlook and a great deal of enthusiasm. The first team management remained the same with Mick Wright and John Templeton at the helm. The first team finished 6th in the league and were finalists in the Challenge Trophy losing to Brook House on penalties after extra time.
In the 2006/2007 they started the season with a new management team, but it was decided that for the long term good of the club they would have to part company with the new manager before the end of the season. The 1st team finished mid-table and had an early exit in all major cup competitions. In contrast, the Reserves, under the guidance of Manager Mark Tyrrell, had a brilliant season by winning the league on the last game of the season and winning the Reserve Challenge Cup beating WGC Reserves from a division above. They were also the losing finalists in the Herts Intermediate Cup. 2007/2008 the London Colney FC Centenary Year saw the club relegated from the Premier League for the first time They started the next century trying to get back to Premier Division status. The 2008/2009 saw additional committee members joining a new management team of Julian Robinson as Manager with Frank Patrick as his assistant with most of the young squad retained with a couple of new faces to begin the season in Division One and begin a period of stability with steady consolidation of a club that had shared its near past of turmoil with near extinction a possibility. The 2009/10 season seemed an endless season due to fixture congestion and the weather being so inclement the club had a tremendous campaign, albeit after the disappointment of losing out by 1 point for one of the promotion places leaving everyone at the club deflated for a while until they reflected
8 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Colney london-colney-print.indd 8
04/03/2022 02:14:56
on two cup final victories and one losing 9-10 on pens in the other. The first team with a thirdplace finish in the MSSML Division One good cup runs in the FA and Vase competitions, the reserves having a tremendous season finishing second in Division Two, The A team won the Bingham Cup and finished runners up in the other cup final and finally the U18s winning the league and cup double.
Season 2014/15 had seen the start of a new era with Jim Nicholls and his coaching staff at the helm. However, due to work commitments, Jim became Chairman and Ryan Thompson came back as first-team manager. The club went on a remarkable unbeaten streak during the second half of the season, narrowly missing out on the title by finishing second to Kings Langley.
The 2010/11 season a management team of Dave Townsend and Frank Patrick were quickly invited into the hot seat following the departure of Julian Robinson to Tring Athletic to try and stabilize the club once more and push for honours, following early disappointing results the team was unable to reach the promotion spots to remain in the division although a Hertfordshire Charity Shield Final saw the Blueboys lose against Premier side Leverstock Green.
Season 2016/17 saw the club bring in Joe Sweeney and his team from Chesham. An excellent start to the season meant that the Blueboys went straight to the top of the table and remained there until the end of the season becoming the Spartan Premier Division champions. The Reserve team also won the Suburban league table to make it a double to remember. The powers that be decided to refuse promotion to the Ryman’s League Division 1 which meant 2nd place Hertford Town gained promotion instead. Manager Joe Sweeney and almost all the promotionwinning squad left the club after this decision for pastures new.
Following the disappointment of staying in Division One in the 2011/12 season a new management team of Ryan Thompson, Chris Day, and Tony Kavanagh were brought in to bring fresh impetus into the club after Dave Townsend stepped down to become a reserve team manager due to his heavy work commitments together with his impending marriage. The season went from strength to strength with promotion to the Premier Division gained by a record 15 points with top scorer Matty Newman hitting the 50-goal mark over all competitions, with the young reserve side finishing a creditable mid-table. Season 2012/13 saw the side finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division consolidating the improvement under Ryan Thompson’s guidance this after a season of unprecedented injuries leaving the squad sadly depleted of up to 10 first-team players for most of the season. Season 2013/14 saw the Blueboys finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division in what would be Ryan Thompsons last season as manager. After a slow start, the team had a good middle and end to the campaign climbing up the table in the process. Matt Newman also departed scoring 32 goals in his final season with the Blueboys, backed up well by Martin Collins with 17 goals.
The board also decided they no longer wanted to carry on running the club so unless a new board could be found quickly the club would fold with immediate effect. Season 2017/18 saw a new consortium headed up by Chairman Gareth Davies along with former Peterborough, Watford and Birmingham centre forward Ken Charlery agreeing to become the new custodians of the club which was perilously close to folding. The season started brightly with the Blueboys top of the league after the first 6 games which were a remarkable achievement considering the club had no players with less than 4 weeks to go until the season started. With a very young inexperienced squad (no less than nine under 19s) the early pace could not be maintained, and the club finished the season in 13th place while also reaching the semi-final of the League cup before going out to Risborough Rangers.

jammers notes First, I would like to thank everyone at the club for supporting me during this very difficult time. The staff the management and the players have been exceptional throughout. The emotional strain of losing somebody so close is unexplainable but being involved and supported so well by the club has kept my mind busy and as positive as can be. The main reason I’m back playing is because I had PK in my ear every week telling me I’m a long time retired! Get back out there and enjoy it and I’m doing exactly that! Paul’s been following Dunstable Town since I signed, and knew more about the game when I come off, than I did after just playing in it. Thank you once again for all the kind words Let’s keep this run going and the club moving forward.

this week’s sponsors helping disabled children participate in sport A Smile For A Child is a small, grant giving charity. We help disabled and disadvantaged children to participate and progress in sport and mobility. We provide funds for things like specialist sports equipment, hall hire, private swimming lessons and much more. The families or clubs or specialist schools apply to us and if we are able to support them, we send them the money to help their child or students. We raise money by conducting bucket collections at supermarkets, highstreets, train stations and underground stations. Our supporters and volunteers also take part in sponsored events, such as mass participant events like the Great North Run, the London marathon and London to Paris cycle ride. They also take part in their own sponsored events which they come up with themselves. These have ranged from a sponsored wax, to a 48hour running event, to a walk along Hadrian’s Wall. All our volunteers are amazing and give so much for the children we help. Chris Read founded the charity in 2008. He was a marathon runner and always ran for a friend’s charity who helped disabled children in sport. After being made redundant from his job, Chris decided to set up his own charity. He wanted to make a difference to the lives of disabled children and their families. He did all this from his living room, to make sure that all the money raised went directly to the children and not to rent or energy cost. Chris wanted his charity to help the families who needed a smaller amount of money, £100-£500 range. These requests often get missed by the big charities as they donate larger amounts for
london-colney-print.indd 17
various reasons. Chris believed that sport can make the world of difference to the lives of any child. Disabled children need that bit more support to take part, such as a specialist chair, or a private lesson and Chris was honoured to be able to provide that joy for them. After Chris’ very sudden passing in 2021, A Smile For A Child was taken over by his daughter Lauren. With the support of our fantastic volunteers, we will remember Chris and his amazing work by continuing to help disabled and disadvantaged children through sport. Chris’s moto was ‘Impossible is nothing’ and both Chris himself and the children who A Smile For A Child support are the epitome of that statement.

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play

an incredible day to remember one of our own Well, I am writing this after our 3-0 win against Broadfields United. Wow what support from everyone. Aaron Bateman would have loved it today. The youth section did him proud. The first team players left everything on the pitch and the fans were awesome so thank you, I know it means a lot to Ian and Charlotte. A big thank you to the youth teams that continued to do minute silences over the weekend. #ONECLUBONEFAMILY

Dunstable Town Muchineripi 53, Sellers-West 81, Faulkner 90 Broadfields United
saturday 26th february • SSMfl premier division CREASEY PARK • attendance 279 • Patrick MacKay Emotional scenes underlined events at Creasey Park on Saturday, as Dunstable Town celebrated the life of fan, friend, and volunteer Aaron Bateman. Town started the game brightly, and a quick counterattack resulted in a through ball sending Jack Percy through on goal, but Broadfields keeper Matt Faley was quickly off his line and Percy could only shoot wide. Percy was causing the visitors trouble again shortly afterwards, when Faley got his fingertips to a low shot from the edge of the box, tipping it onto the post before it was cleared to safety. Terrence Muchineripi was next to try his luck for the Blues, blasting over with his left foot, but Dunstable weren’t going to have things all their own way. Broadfields looked quick going forward, and it was not long before Stevie Ward was able to cut in on his right foot and force a decent save from Dan Gould. The ball rebounded to Ward, but his shot sailed safely over the bar. Floral tributes were laid beside the newly named Aaron Bateman Stand, and this was the end the Blues found themselves attacking towards in the second half, with the majority of the 279-strong crowd willing them on.
the bar. Not according to the officials though; goal kick. A period of Broadfields pressure ensued, and they crafted two very decent chances from corners before a Rhys Ellis long-ranger forced Gould into action. With ten minutes to play, and only a slender lead for the home side, Joseph Sellers-West latched onto a through ball and tucked the ball into the bottom corner, giving the Blues breathing space, to the relief and joy of the fans. A mistake in the Broadfields midfield saw Dunstable able to regain possession and attack, and in the ninetieth minute the cherry was put on top of the victory. Kyle Faulkner received the ball on the left side of the box from Sellers-West, and his deflected shot left Faley rooted to the spot. Even goalkeeper Gould made his way to the top of the field to join in celebrations for the third, and this display of speed probably gave him the edge as he was chosen as man of the match. A fitting performance from all involved, on and off the pitch, on a day of high emotion. We wish you were there watching with us though, Aaron.
Having started the second half positively, it was in the fifty-fourth minute that the deadlock was broken. Muchineripi received the ball on the edge of the D, turned and fired a right-footed rocket into the corner of the goal, before the team ran to celebrate with Aaron Bateman’s family and friends. Broadfields battled back though. A deep free kick was headed into the middle of the box for Ward to get an athletic effort on goal, which Gould managed to tip over DUNSTABLE TOWN v London Colney - 35

5 March 1870 - The First International (Sort Of) On 5 March 1870, London hosted the world’s first international match, with an English team facing a group of London-based Scottish players. It ended in a 1-1 draw. C.W. Alcock of Old Harrovians--FA Secretary and later founder of the FA Cup--organized the match as the first of a series of five showcases between the two countries and captained the English side. The Scottish eleven was chosen by Arthur Kinnaird and captain James Kirkpatrick and also included Old Etonians’ William Gladstone, whose father later became Prime Minister.
Baker found the net for England in the 89th minute to earn a 1-1 draw. Four more representative matches followed between November 1870 and February 1872, ending in one more draw and three wins for England. But because the Scottish teams for all five matches were drawn exclusively from London, FIFA does not recognize them as official internationals.
The teams met at the Oval, muddied from rain, and played through a scoreless first half. After the break, they switched sides, which a postmatch report described as a newly-implemented rule. Late in the second half, Alcock moved his goalkeeper up the field, leaving an opening for Scotland’s Robert Crawford to score the opening goal in the 75th minute. But Alfred
