2 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs LONDON COLNEY T he ma N ager

We won 4-0 in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy against Baldock Town last week and I was delighted with our performance. I thought some of our play on the night was scintillating. We did so much better in possession, playing through and around Baldock’s shape and pulled them apart at will at times during the game. 4 goals, 4 different type of goals and 4 different goal scorers plus a well-deserved clean sheet left me really pleased at the full-time whistle. The grass was short, the pitch was wet which allowed us to move the ball with a tempo and slickness we rehearse and practice every single week at training. The tactical flexibility my players are capable of allows us to switch between systems and find different solutions to problems we are presented with. I was especially pleased with our bravery and courage in possession. We had players

Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all attached to London Colney ahead of today’s game in the league. Firstly, it is nice to return to football. Last weekend’s games being cancelled in rightful dedication to the sad passing of Her Majesty the Queen. It feels like an eternity since our last league game against Tring Athletic and there is a relief, we are back to league action. At the time of writing, we find ourselves 4 and 5 games behind other teams. It is not ideal, but you will certainly never hear me moan about things being “unfair”. Unfair is a belief we were given as young children that life should be fair! Without being nostalgic the only fairness in life is in fairy tales and Disney movies. There are no assumptions at this level or no divine right to win games of football. It is foolhardy to presume the league table or recent form gives you the right to win. The facts are simple, we need to ensure we perform like we did against Baldock and for most of the season to date and we give ourselves a good chance of

joe dee N ey

winning. If we serve up a performance like we did against Shefford Town and Campton, it will indeed be London Colney that travel south on the M1 with the 3 points.

Joe Reynolds is a name many of our loyal fans and fans of London Colney will remember and is someone I can’t wait to see back in a Dunstable Town shirt. Joe had a terrible Achilles injury last season and is nearing a return to fitness. He has been superb since arriving here. He has a fantastic way of assessing and analysing things and brings great suggestions and analysis to the group. He is a great addition to Dunstable Town both on and off the pitch and deserves a huge amount of praise for what he has done for us.

wanting to and willing to get on the ball and play through Baldock.

I am delighted to be able to welcome Jamie Nicholls to the management team. Jammers has been exceptional both on and off the pitch. From the moment he arrived he has really helped kick our football club on. I don’t trust many people in my life, but he is someone I have incredible trust in. I identified last season that he would be someone throughout my management career I would want with me. He is a massive personality, incredibly loyal and is someone that hasn’t only been my influential captain but someone who has become a mate. He is a fantastic addition for me, and the club and I have no doubt in many years to come we will still be together side by side. It has allowed me to redefine roles within the management team and give different coaches specific roles that massively suit their skill set which will only make us better. I will announce the restructure in more depth next week.

A lot of you probably see a big loud cauliflower eared Head Coach running up and down touch lines, kicking every ball mentally but my coaching team have been great. Kyle Durcan, Anthony Christophi, Lee Cowley, Adam Ashton our wonderful physio and finally but by no means least Joe Reynolds have been beneficial to me. I’m exceptionally demanding and intense and every one of these guys deserve credit.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

I was delighted to see Dylan Baker back in a Dunstable Town shirt and he reminded everyone of what a talent he is with a Man of the Match performance. Dylan is the only survivor from the group we inherited in October last year. I have known Dylan for many years, and he has really kicked on since he joined us. I was gutted for him in pre-season as he had been outstanding and then cruelly picked up an injury during our last preseason fixture. As this group has shown consistently when one person misses out someone else gets their shirt and it’s hard to get it back off them again. I must give the utmost respect and credit to Dylan, he hasn’t sulked or moped he has got his head down, worked hard, trained well, and delivered an excellent performance. I thought my players were excellent on Tuesday and I was very proud of them.

I look forward to seeing our excellent supporters today and hopefully another big crowd will cheer us onto 3 points. Enjoy the game.

Joe Deeney

Finally, another bit of great news is that I am ecstatic to welcome Luke Dunstan to the group. Luke is a player I worked with many years ago full time for 2 years and is someone I have been chasing ever since I took this job. He brings excellent experience, quality on the ball and tenacity to the group. He will take a couple of weeks to get up to full speed, but I am so pleased we managed to get him signed. The supporters here will love him I have no doubts and his new team-mates are delighted he is here. Welcome Luke.

I lead last year’s fundraise project to achieve a target of five thousand pounds, which was to be raised and then donated to The Luton & Dunstable University Hospital’s Cancer Department, a Cheque was presented to Charmaine Norris [Charity Fundraising Manager at the L&D Hospital] last March.

Welcome to everyone visiting Creasey Park this afternoon for a Spartan South Midlands Football League Premier Division match against London Colney. Especially a very warm welcome to the management, officials, players, and supporters of London Colney, I hope you have an enjoyable visit to Creasey Park this afternoon and all have a safe journey home.

With The Town being knocked out of the FA Cup 2 weeks ago against Shefford Town & Campton, the Blues bounced back with a good performance against Baldock Town in The Gladwish Challenge Trophy last Tuesday and ran out 4-0 winners to progress into the 2nd round. A goal from Kyle Faulkner in the 6th minute gave Town a half time lead and second half goals from Harry Beaumont, Terrence Muchineripi and Remell Stirling rounded off the win.

I was elected to the football club’s committee in 2020 and given the position of Fundraising Manager.

Some of the monies raised were collected from 2 sponsored walks. So, this season an idea put forward to me from Richard Scott [Scottie] the clubs programme editor was to have 5 sponsored walks to five away games the first being to Leverstock Green on Saturday 5th October – 26km. [All welcome to join us if you fancy a fun day out, a couple of pints and help us to raise some money].

The five walks will total a distance of 100km. The Regiment lead by Scottie, Ian Bateman, Dean Falla, Liam Smith and myself have all volunteered to do the walks to raise money that will be split and donated to this year’s nominated charities such as The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, The Paddling Paramedic, The OLLIE Foundation [one life lost is enough] and towards a defibrillator to go pitch side at every one of Dunstable Town’s matches.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your support home & away! Let’s hope for an entertaining game today and those welcomed 3pts. Enjoy the game.

In the 2001/2002 season, London Colney saw its greatest successes yet with the 1st Team winning the League with a ten-point difference as the highest in the league’s history. They lost only two games; scored a massive 119 goals; had a goal difference of 87 after going unbeaten for the first 27 league games.

l o N do N c ol N ey

The London Colney Football Club was formed in 1907, playing at Whitehorse Lane until moving to its present ground at Cotlandswick, London Colney in 1976. The Club played in the Mid Herts League until the mid-fifties, when it joined the Herts County League. The Club has enjoyed many successes over the years with the 1st team winning the Premier Division League 3 times.

In the 1998/99 season, the South Midlands League amalgamated with the Spartan League to form the Minerva Spartan South Midlands League and London Colney finished 3rd in the Premier Division. The Blueboys had the title within their grasp after a brilliant 11 match winning streak between October and December and they remained in the top two throughout the final weeks of the season only to be pipped at the post on the final day of the season by Barkingside and Potters Bar Town. This disappointment was eased a few days later when they beat Hoddesdon Town 1-0 to win the Herts Charity Shield.

The 1999/2000 season saw Malcolm Doctor join Mick Wright as a joint manager of the 1st Team. They were once again a competitor in the FA Vase and reached the last sixteen losing 4-3 to Eccles Hill United who travelled from Yorkshire for the match.

2003/04 season saw several of their players returning to the club and with an optimistic outlook and a great deal of enthusiasm. The first team management remained the same with Mick Wright and John Templeton at the helm. The first team finished 6th in the league and were finalists in the Challenge Trophy losing to Brook House on penalties.

They went top after just three games and maintained domination apart from a few days in December, won 28 of their 38 games, and provided the league’s leading scorer through Gary Sippetts who bagged an incredible 45 strikes. They also won the Challenge Trophy and were semi-finalists in the Premier Division Cup.

The 2002/03 season what a difference a year makes whilst not expecting the same successes as the previous season the loss of many of their players to other clubs meant a disastrous start to the season. They then lost Malcolm Doctor who resigned early in the season. However, thanks to John Templeton stepping into the breach to join Mick They managed to finish the season a creditable 6th in the league.

2004/05 saw Mick Wright stepping down as Manager leaving John Templeton in sole charge. After a very good start, when they won 7 league games in a row, they seemed to lose their way and finished 11th in the league.

In the 2006/2007 they started the season with a new management team, but it was decided that for the long term good of the club they would have to part company before the end of the season.

The 2010/11 season a management team of Dave Townsend and Frank Patrick were quickly invited into the hot seat following the departure of Julian Robinson to Tring Athletic to try and stabilize the club once more and push for honours, following early results the team was unable to reach the promotion spots to remain in the division.

The 2009/10 season seemed an endless season due to fixture congestion and the weather being so inclement the club had a tremendous campaign, albeit after the disappointment of losing out by 1 point for one of the promotion places.

2007/2008 the London Colney FC Centenary Year saw the club relegated from the Premier League. The 2008/2009 saw additional committee members joining a new management team of Julian Robinson as Manager with Frank Patrick as his assistant with most of the young squad retained with a couple of new faces to begin the season in Division One and begin a period of stability with steady consolidation of a club that had shared its near past of turmoil with near extinction a possibility.

Kavanagh were brought in to bring fresh impetus into the club after Dave Townsend stepped down to become a reserve team manager due to his heavy work commitments together with his impending marriage. The season went from strength to strength with promotion to the Premier Division gained with 102 points with top scorer Matty Newman hitting the 50-goals over all competitions.

Season 2012/13 saw the side finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division consolidating the improvement under Ryan Thompson’s guidance this after a season of unprecedented injuries leaving the squad sadly depleted of up to 10 players for most of the season.

Season 2014/15 had seen the start of a new era with Jim Nicholls and his coaching staff at the helm. However, due to work commitments, Jim became

Season 2013/14 saw the Blueboys finish 7th in the Spartan Midlands League Premier Division in what would be Ryan Thompsons last season as manager. After a slow start, the team had a good middle and end to the campaign climbing up the table in the process. Matt Newman also departed scoring 32 goals in his final season with the Blueboys, backed up well by Martin Collins with 17 goals.

The season started brightly with the Blueboys top of the league after the first 6 games which were a remarkable achievement considering the club had no players with less than 4 weeks to go until the season started. With a very young inexperienced squad the early pace could not be maintained, and the club finished the season in 13th place.

Season 2016/17 saw the club bring in Joe Sweeney. An excellent start to the season meant that the Blueboys went straight to the top of the table and remained there until the end of the season becoming the Spartan Premier Division champions. The powers that be decided to refuse promotion to the Ryman’s League Division 1 which meant 2nd place Hertford Town gained promotion instead. Manager Joe Sweeney and almost all the promotionwinning squad left the club after this decision for pastures new. The board also decided they no longer wanted to carry on running the club so unless a new board could be found quickly the club would fold with immediate effect.

Minutes later Charlie Jones kicked low and hard to Baker who again found Faulkner, this time the Baldock keeper made a good save. Baker was voted man of the match for a performance full of running, energy, and creativity.

Dunstable nearly scored again when Terrence Muchineripi won a loose ball he quite frankly had no right to do. The amount of ground he covered was ridiculous. But win it, he did and as the ball bounced loose from the crunching tackle it fell kindly to Faulkner who hit the ball narrowly past the post.

The third Dunstable goal just shy of the hour mark, this time saw Faulkner provide Muchineripi with the opportunity to get off the mark. Seasoned watchers know that when Terrence connects with the ball it’s going to be a thunderbolt, and this was one of them. On the angle and nestled into the top left hand corner with the goalkeeper at full stretch.

maTch re P or T

Baldock should have done better from a corner on the right hand side. It found the head of a red shirt but unable to guide the ball the chance was gone.

The icing on the cake for Dunstable came in the second minute of stoppage time when Harry Beaumont crossed from out on the left for Remell Stirling,on as a second half substitute, to head home from close range.

All in all, it had been a good game of football. Dunstable had played the way we know they can and had entertained the fans. Baldock played their part in an entertaining match but it’s Dunstable who progress into the hat for the next round of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy.

Joe Deeney’s men never looked in any real trouble from the moment Kyle Faulkner was in the right place at the right time to finish off a lovely move involving Joe Sellers-West & the fit again, Dylan Baker. Sellers-West started the move with an inch perfect pass to Baker, on the overlap, whose first touch enabled Faulkner to knock the ball home.

The Blues bounced back from defeat in the Emirates FA Cup 72 hours earlier to record their best win of the season against Baldock Town, who themselves had scored eight in their previous game. The heavens opened shortly before kick off and made redundant the Creasey Park sprinkler system. Despite the deluge a decent crowd of 122 came to watch a good game of football.

At the start of the second half Baldock hit the bar again but when your luck’s out there’s not much you can do about

it. Within a minute Harry Beaumont extended the Blues lead with a welltimed lob over the keeper. Charlie Jones kicked down field, Joe Sellers-West knocked it into the path of Beaumont who chested it down and hit it first time.

Blue shirts swept forward, Faulkner broke dangerously, rounded the keeper, but from a tight angle, could only find the side netting. Joe Sellers-West was the recipient of a perfect pass, found himself in space, beat two men and as the goalkeeper approached fired over. But it wasn’t all one way traffic. Baldock looked dangerous on the break and had an appeal for a penalty turned down by referee Josh Burns on 20 minutes and later hit the bar from a free kick.

38 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs LONDON COLNEY

Ollie Bayliss returns to BBC Three Counties on Saturday afternoons, for all the latest non-league news from Beds, Herts & Bucks.

Ticket prices for some games start from just £8 each. Alas, those tickets are for locals in the hope that the migrant workers who have effectively built the infrastructure will attend. For anyone coming from further afield, tickets prices are far less generous. The cheapest tickets in the group stages will be £50, which isn’t bad considering the prices in the Premier League, rising to £180. For a quarter final then basically treble those prices and for a spot in the 80,000 capacity Lusail Stadium for the final, the cheapest tickets are £440.

Time will tell as and when these issues are sorted as to whether the demand for tickets will be there. For now, anyone can go onto the FIFA website and apply for tickets.

Many have looked at basing themselves in the UAE and flying to Doha but even that option is now costing close to £1,000 for a return flight. A drive across the Arabian desert isn’t that much appealing at over 6 hours each way.

A favourite saying of mine is ‘Price is only an issue in the absence of value’. In economic terms this refers to the concept that unless a consumer gets utility from a product or service, price is irrelevant. This is why for some plays, such as Hamilton, tickets are highly priced. Not only is there a very high demand for a very limited supply (this setting the market price) but people see a value (enjoyment in this case) of the Thinkplay.

The England Supporters Travel Club, the only way England fans can get official tickets, numbers around 4,300 which means based on the smallest capacity stadiums being used, with 40,000 seats, all who want a ticket are likely to get one. FIFA will take around 33% of the capacity for the ‘Football Family’, with 25% each given to each nation. However, plenty have already said they will not travel due to the issues behind the tournament and the logistical issues with travel and accommodation.

for the demand. Which is why when the first application phase for tickets opened, the organisers used a pricing strategy that looks to mitigate the problem of having empty stadiums.

back to a time when a company has been giving our free samples of their products at a train station. We will all rush to take one but if instead of being free they were discounted by 80 or even 90%, would we still be as keen? Possibly, but only if we saw a value on the product at that price.

Back in March tickets went on sale for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which starts in a few months time. The tournament, which has been dogged by controversy ever since the tiny country was announced as the host back in 2010, will see 31 countries and their fans arrive to watch 64 games in less than a month. The country has built eight new stadiums, seven of which are within twenty miles of the centre of Doha.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 39

Imagine a World Cup being played in Greater Manchester and you may get the idea of the logistical problems that fans could face. A search on Hotels.com for a room for two for one of the early weekend’s in the tournament returns zero availability. The football club was founded in 1946 by ex-servicemen as a rival to the already existing Abingdon Town FC. The new club joined the North Berks League and won the league’s Charity Shield in the first season. In 1958, promotion was secured to the Hellenic League.

reorganisation, Abingdon became part of the non-metropolitan Shire County of Oxfordshire and the seat of the new Vale of White Horse District Council, with Abingdon becoming a civil parish with a town council.

44 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs LONDON COLNEY

Abingdon United 1 Moreton Rangers 0Hellenic League, Division One Abingdon is eight miles south of Oxford, in the flat valley of the Thames and is situated on the west (right) bank of that river, where the small river Ock flows in from the Vale of White Horse. The town is situated on the A415 between Witney and Dorchester and has the benefit of being adjacent to the A34 trunk road, linking it with the M4 and M40 motorways. Abingdon was the county town of Berkshire, and the magnificent county hall and courthouse (now the museum) was supposedly designed by Christopher Wren. However, Abingdon’s failure to engage fully with the railway revolution, accepting only a branch line, disadvantaged the town in favour of Reading. The corporation was reformed, under the Municipal Reform Act 1835 and was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. In 1974, under local government

A midweek jaunt to Oxfordshire was facilitated by the offer of a lift (much appreciated Phil). The journey via A10 and M25 and M40 to Abingdon was relatively straightforward and we were parked up at The Northcourt at 18:45 with the opportunity to grab some photographs in the fading light before plenty of time for a drink ahead of the 19:45 kick off.

in use, there is a turnstile block in the corner of the ground, adjacent to the car park. Admission fees were taken from a table in front of here. The vast clubhouse building is situated at this end of the ground and incorporates the changing facilities, refreshment hatch and licenced bar with function room. The opposite end of the ground is open but is complimented by the backdrop of conifers which is also a feature of the side with the seated stand, giving this venue an enclosed feel.

The match was played in a good spirit for most of the time. The exceptions being a red card for a home player in the second period and the award of a disputed penalty (saved by the Moreton Rangers keeper), awarded after a long debate. My feeling was that the referee was ‘bullied’ into the decision. However, a second blankety blank on successive Tuesdays for me was averted when Dan Chalmers headed the winner for the home side.

After 19 seasons in the bottom division, promotion to the Premier Division was achieved. A 3rd place in 2006 enabled promotion to the South & West Division of the Southern League. This being the club’s highest playing level since foundation. Resignation from the Southern League in 2019 saw the club re-join the Hellenic League

On an evening that had already been punctuated by heavy showers, it was good to see plenty of cover for spectators at this tidy venue. Along one side of the pitch, there is a covered seated stand affording a good view of the playing area. On the opposite side of the pitch, between the dugouts, is an impressive

I had visited Abingdon Town FC for an Isthmian League match v Barking in March 1993. On that occasion I used local railway stations at Radley and Culham. Those connections worked for me on that Saturday, but I suspect would be less favourable midweek.

The Crooked Billet is right next to the ground and serves great food and good real ales but does get busy on a weekend. If travelling by public transport, a pit stop at The Horn close to St Albans station would be recommended or a short walk to the Robin Hood. Another option is the Three Horseshoes on Hatfield Road where the bus drops you off, which serves London Pride and Doom Bar.
