inside the boardroom Good evening everyone & welcome to Creasey Park for tonight’s Beds Senior Challenge Cup It’s a genuine pleasure to welcome all the coaching and playing staff, committee members and supporters from Luton, we hope you all enjoy your evening in our company and get home safely come the final whistle. We have so many connections with the mighty Hatters, not just with Joe & Kyle, but with many of our playing squad being former LTFC Cedars students as well as several moonlighting Luton Season Ticket holders amongst our supporters and volunteers. It’s great to see Nathan Jones and the boys doing so well this season. It’s also a pleasure to welcome our special guest this evening, Stuart Fuller, who is the Chair of Lewes FC. Those of you with long memories may well remember the 28th of October 2017 when we played Lewes FC in the FA Trophy. We were well beaten on the day but that was my introduction to Community / Fan owned clubs and the idea that we could replicate the way Lewes FC was run. Stuart has been incredibly kind and generous with his time sharing, experience and expertise in how they went about running the Club and in so doing has stopped us trying to reinvent many a wheel. I’m also delighted to welcome our Match Sponsors, DYSK Air Conditioning and former Committee man, Jeff Abraham who is our Match Ball Sponsor. A final welcome to Charles Morton & colleagues from Midcliff Ltd who have recently become Club sponsors. Midcliff Ltd are based in Winfield Street and specialize in building &

brickwork and celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. Thanks to all the above for their generous support. It was lovely to see around 45 of you away at Aylesbury on Saturday. I think that was probably our best away following for several years, but I hope we can beat it this coming Saturday with our short trip to The Brache to play Crawley Green in the local derby. It was a huge blow to concede an equalizer in the 7th minute of stoppage time on Saturday, on a heavy pitch the boys acquitted themselves admirably and Jack Percy’s debut goal for the Club will live long in DTFC folklore. Thankfully the injury to J’Ardell Stirling isn’t looking as serious as we first thought. Huge thanks to the Lewington family who took J’Ardell and Remell home in order that J’Ardell could get his injury assessed at his local hospital. Volunteers are the lifeblood of all non-league clubs. We are truly very fortunate to have so many committed individuals who give so willingly of their skills and their free time. There’s always room for more volunteers to come on board, so please feel free to contact us if you have a few hours a month to spare and would like to help us take the Club forward. That’s all from me, thanks as always for your support, please support Clovis & Jamaica Mi Crazy & the Creasey Park bar & food hatch & of course enjoy tonight’s game.

A very warm welcome to all the board, players, staff and supporters of Luton Town for this evening’s game. Luton is a club I have spent most of my life involved with. I spent just over 10 years as a player and a further 13 years as a coach so it’s fair to say it’s a club I have held a long affection for. Nathan Jones is doing an incredible job as manager of the club, and I have a strong belief it won’t be long until Luton will be a Premier League Club. Whilst Luton Town has been a big part of my life, I am a very proud Head Coach of Dunstable Town and like all our supporters I am now also a fan of the club. Tonight, for me is all about my passion for being the Head Coach at Dunstable Town and when the game starts that is my entire focus. I say it regularly, but I have loved every minute at this club. Myself, Kyle and the players are really excited as to where we believe we can get to over the next few seasons. Tonight, promises to be a real challenge for us and one we are all looking forward to.

4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v luton Town luton-print.indd 4

We come into the game off the back of a real pleasing performance on Saturday away at Aylesbury even though the 1-1 draw and the manner of their late equaliser a real gut punch. We were excellent in the 1st half and were disappointed to go in at 0-0 in a half we dominated. We hit the cross bar in the 2nd half and never really felt in any danger with Dan Gould not really tested. The game was heading for a 0-0 when a rocket from Jack Percy gave us a 1-0 lead with minutes remaining. Unfortunately, deep into a surprising amount of added time we conceded a questionable free kick that led to the equaliser. The lads were

notes from the bench Whilst Luton Town has been a big part of my life, I am a very proud Head Coach of Dunstable Town understandably upset and disappointed. It’s a great learning curve for us but it was hard to take especially having lost J’ardell Stirling early in the game and then Jamie Nicholls later. Both players are very influential, and it was hard to lose both and then lose a goal right at the death. That’s football though and the positives far outweigh the negatives off the back of Saturdays performance. Our lads never stopped running, they worked relentlessly on an horrific surface and that’s now 8 league games unbeaten. We are learning every week with a young group, and I couldn’t be prouder of the lads. There will be more highs and lows this season but we all know where we want to get to, so every low is another great opportunity for myself and Kyle to learn and reflect. Our supporters were superb on Saturday. The numbers of supporters travelling to away games continues to increase and it is humbling to see. This is a club full of incredible people which was personified on Saturday. Losing Jardell to a suspected broken foot Kristy and Steve drove J’ardell and Remell back to Tottenham to get his foot X rayed. That coupled with the fact that a family of Luton Town season ticket holders George and Freddie chose to come to our game over the Luton vs Bournemouth game. They unfortunately saw very little of our game which was an incredible gesture from them putting the welfare of the player ahead of the game itself. Julian and his son Charlie then helped muck in to wash the kit which I’m sure based on the pitch will be no easy task. These kinds of gestures continue to reinforce the correct decision for us to have joined this excellent club. I am delighted to say that despite the cricket ball sized lump on J’ardell’s foot on Saturday the

luton-print.indd 5

X-Ray hasn’t shown any fractures or breaks. We look forward to welcoming him back soon. Jamie Nicholls ankle will be assessed over the next couple of days. Hopefully we will have both players back in contention quickly as they are a big part of what we do. This will now open the door for other players in the squad to take their opportunity. I’m really pleased with the squad and each week it’s a nice selection headache to have. I hope the selection headache continues. After tonight’s game we go to Crawley Green for our rearranged fixture which will be another tough local derby. We hope to have yet another strong backing of Dunstable Town supporters, I assure you it really does make a difference. I hope you enjoy the game tonight. Joe

Luton Town was formed in 1885. Before this there were many clubs in the town, the most prominent of which were Luton Wanderers and Luton Excelsior

H

A Wanderers player, George Deacon, came up with the idea of a ‘Town’ club which would include all the best players in Luton. Wanderers’ secretary Herbert Spratley seized upon Deacon’s idea and arranged a secret meeting on 13 January 1885 at the St Matthews school rooms in High Town. The Wanderers committee resolved to rename the club Luton Town—which was not well received by the wider community. The local newspapers referred to the club as ‘Luton Town (late Wanderers)’. When George Deacon and John Charles Lomax then arranged a public meeting with the purpose of forming a ‘Luton Town Football Club’, Spratley protested, saying there was already a Luton Town club; and the atmosphere was tense when the meeting convened in the town hall on 11 April 1885. The meeting, attended by most football lovers in the town, heard about Spratley’s secret January meeting and voted down his objections. The motion to form a ‘Luton Town

Football Club’, put forward by G H Small and seconded by E H Lomax, was carried. A club committee was elected by ballot and the team colours were agreed to be pink and dark blue shirts and caps.

N

Initially based at Excelsior’s Dallow Lane ground, Luton Town began making payments to certain individual players in 1890. The following year, Luton became the first club in southern England to be fully professional. The club was a founder member of the Southern Football League in the 1894–95 season and finished as runners-up in its first two seasons. It then left to help form the United League and came second in that league’s inaugural season before joining the Football League (then based mostly in northern and central England) for 1897–98, concurrently moving to a new ground at Dunstable Road. The club continued to enter a team to the United League for two more seasons and won the title in 1897–98.

Poor attendance, high wages and the high travel and accommodation costs that resulted from Luton’s distance from the northern heartlands of the Football League crippled the club financially and made it too expensive to compete in that league. A return to the Southern League was therefore arranged for the 1900–01 season. Eight years after arriving at Dunstable Road, Luton moved again, settling at their current ground, Kenilworth Road, in 1905. Captain and left winger Bob Hawkes became Luton’s first international player when he was picked to play for England against Ireland on 16 February 1907. A poor 1911–12 season saw Luton relegated to the Southern League’s Second Division; the club won promotion back two years later. After the First World War broke out, Luton took part in The London Combination during 1915–16, and afterwards filled each season with friendly matches. A key player of the period was Ernie Simms, a forward. Simms was invalided back to England after being wounded on the Italian front but recovered enough to regain his place in the Luton team and scored 40 goals during the 1916–17 season. The Luton side first played in the white and black colours which it has retained for much of its history during the 1920–21 season, when the club rejoined the Football League; the players had previously worn an assortment of colour combinations, most permanently sky-blue shirts with white shorts and navy socks. Such was the quality of Luton’s team at this time that despite playing in the third tier, a fixture between Ireland and England at Windsor Park on 22 October 1921 saw three Luton players on the pitch—Louis Bookman and Allan Mathieson for Ireland, and the club’s top goal scorer, Simms, for England. However, after Luton finished fourth in the division, the squad was broken up as Simms, Bookman and Mathieson joined South Shields, Port Vale and Exeter City respectively. Luton stayed in the Third Division South until 1936–37, when the team finished top and won promotion to the Second Division, at that time the second tier of English football. During the promotion

season, striker Joe Payne scored 55 goals in 39 games; during the previous season he had scored 10 in one match against Bristol Rovers, which remains a Football League record today. During the early 1950s, one of Luton’s greatest sides emerged under manager Dally Duncan. The team included Gordon Turner, who went on to become Luton’s all-time top goalscorer, Bob Morton, who holds the record for the most club appearances, and Syd Owen, an England international. During this period, Luton sides also featured two England international goalkeepers, Ron Baynham and Bernard Streten, as well as Irish internationals Seamus Dunne, Tom Aherne and George Cummins. This team reached the topflight for the first time in 1955–56, after finishing the season in second place behind Birmingham City on goal average. A few years of success followed, including an FA Cup Final appearance against Nottingham Forest in 1958–59; at the end of the season, Owen was voted FWA Footballer of the Year. However, the club was relegated the following season and, by 1964–65, was playing in the fourth tier. In yo-yo club fashion, Luton were to return. A team including Bruce Rioch, John Moore and Graham French won the Fourth Division championship in 1967–68 under the leadership of former player Allan Brown; two years later Malcolm Macdonald’s goals helped them to another promotion, while comedian Eric Morecambe became a director of the club. Luton Town won promotion back to the First Division in 1973–74, but were relegated the following season by a solitary point. Former Luton player David Pleat was made manager in 1978, and by 1982–83 the team was back in the topflight. The team which Pleat assembled at Kenilworth Road was notable at the time for the number of black players it included; during an era when many English squads were almost entirely white, Luton often fielded a mostly black team. Talented players such as Ricky Hill, Brian Stein and Emeka Nwajiobi made key contributions to the club’s success during this period, causing it to accrue “a richer history of black stars than any in the country”, in the words of journalist Gavin Willacy.

On the last day of the 1982–83 season, the club’s first back in the top tier, it narrowly escaped relegation: playing Manchester City at Maine Road, Luton needed to win to stay up, while City could escape with a draw. A late winner by Yugoslavian substitute Raddy Antić saved the team and prompted Pleat to dance across the pitch performing a “jig of joy”, an image that has become iconic. The club achieved its highest ever league position, seventh, under John Moore in 1986–87, and, managed by Ray Harford, won the Football League Cup a year later with a 3–2 win over Arsenal. With ten minutes left on the clock and Arsenal 2–1 ahead, a penalty save from standin goalkeeper Andy Dibble sparked a late Luton rally: Danny Wilson equalised, before Brian Stein scored the winner with the last kick of the match. The club reached the League Cup Final once more in 1988–89 but lost 3–1 to Nottingham Forest. The club was relegated from the top division at the end of the 1991–92 season and sank to the third tier four years later. Luton stayed in the third-tier Second Division until relegation at the end of the 2000–01 season. Under the management of Joe Kinnear, who had arrived halfway through the previous season, the team won promotion from the fourth tier at the first attempt. “Controversial” owner John Gurney unsettled the club in 2003, terminating Kinnear’s contract on his arrival in May; Gurney replaced Kinnear with Mike Newell before leaving Luton as the club entered administration. Newell’s team finished as champions of the rebranded third-tier Football League One in 2004–05.

Trophy to win the competition for the first time. Relegation meant that 2009–10 saw Luton playing in the Conference Premier, a competition in which the club had never participated. The club unsuccessfully contested the promotion play-offs three times in four seasons during their time as a non-League club, employing five different managers. In the 2012–13 FA Cup fourth round, Luton won their away tie against Premier League club Norwich City 1–0 and, in doing so, became the first non-League team to beat a side from England’s top division since 1989. In the 2013–14 season, under the management of John Still, Luton won the Conference Premier title with three games to spare, and thereby secured a return to the Football League from 2014–15. After reaching the League Two playoffs in 2016–17, when they were beaten 6–5 on aggregate by Blackpool in the semi-final, Luton were promoted back to League One the following season as runners-up. Luton achieved a second successive promotion in 2018–19, after they won the League One title, marking the club’s return to the Championship after a 12-year absence.

While Newell’s place was taken first by Kevin Blackwell and later former player Mick Harford, the team was then relegated twice in a row, starting in 2006–07, and spent the latter part of the 2007–08 season in administration, thus incurring a ten-point deduction from that season’s total. The club then had a total of 30 points docked from its 2008–09 record by the Football Association and the Football League for financial irregularities dating back several years. These deductions proved to be too large an obstacle to overcome, but Luton came from behind in the final of the Football League DUNSTABLE TOWN v luton Town - 9

Sin Bins

Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.

HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?

Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions

For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions

EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision

DURATION OF A SIN BIN For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin

10

8

For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin

If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties

THE MATCH DAY PROCESS

Dissent

Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline

Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made

Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted

If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted

If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted

If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play

Ref decides when player returns to play

FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE!

Under 12s Phoenix match report The game kicked off with Dunstable playing the Dunstable way and soon went 1-0 up through Liam on 10 minutes. On 17 minutes Bedford hit a long range shot that beat George who had no chance. Bedford soon went into the lead with a quick throw in, the striker went clear through and slotted it passed George. Dunstable changed their formation and on 25 minutes the Blues were back level when Brandon shoots with his left foot, but the keeper saves and it falls kindly to Naishayn who slots it home for his 14th goal of the season to make it 2-2. Bedford start the second half strong but on 38 minutes Bedford make it 3-2 their striker comes and picks the ball up from the halfway line out runs the Dunstable defence and coolly slots it passed George. 45 minutes played and Dunstable are back level when Tomasz gets

the ball and runs through the Bedford keeper comes out, but Tomasz pokes the ball passed the keeper to make it 3-3. With 10 minutes remaining both sides were playing exciting football but on the 56 minute a corner from Brandon came flying in around the 6-yard box with Bedford unable to clear the ball properly Liam cleverly lobs the keeper from 10 yards to put Dunstable back in the lead. On 60 minutes Bedford were awarded a penalty. The striker stepped up, hits it straight down the middle but George stood his ground and palmed the ball down to his feet and clears the ball with his left foot which goes out of play for a throw in, but the ref blows for the final whistle and Dunstable win 4-3 in an entertaining match both teams doing their clubs proud.

MATCH REPORT monday 3rd january • SSMfl premier division creasey park • attendance 281 A bumper Bank Holiday crowd of 281 were treated to an enthralling contest between two of the League’s form teams. Dunstable Town, as the home side were unbeaten in their previous six league matches, while visitors Arlesey Town, boasted the third best away record in the league and were the Division’s fifth highest goal scorers. Dunstable welcomed back influential skipper Jamie Nicholls into a strong looking line-up. It didn’t take long for the away side to go ahead. With only three minutes on the clock, the Dunstable defence was caught out by an uneven bounce with the ball seemingly stuck in the heavily sanded goal mouth. Reece Cameron didn’t need a second invitation and poked the ball into the net. With Dunstable’s Christmas fixture away at Crawley Green postponed, the 16-day layoff did leave the home side looking a little ring rusty. This was only their 3rd game of football in over five weeks, so this was to be expected. The eagle eye of Assistant Referee, Gavin Muge, saw referee, Terry Dawkins, overturn his original decision to award a penalty to Arlesey, but they weren’t to be denied a second goal for too long as just after the half hour, captain Bruno Brito volleyed home from a corner. The Dunstable come-back started with November & December Goal of The Month winner, Terrence Muchineripi heading home from a free kick on the verge of halftime. Football psychology has written into folklore that one of the best times to score is just before the break. The goal was an important boost not just for the Team but for the home supporters

who had seen plenty of effort and endeavour without any reward until Muchineripi’s early contender for the January GOTM competition. The Blues looked a different team in the second half. Ring rustiness had been discarded and a much more coordinated approach took its place. Referee Dawkins had a busy afternoon showing the yellow card eight times. Five away players and three home players were cautioned. The crowd really started to get behind the team and the introduction of a drum among the supporters helped the atmosphere and created the 12th Man. Head Coach, Joe Deeney, shuffled the pack bringing on pacy striker, Jack Percy for Dylan Baker, just after the hour mark and a couple of minutes before the goal Benji Gray replaced Joe Mead. The equalizer again came from a free kick. Floated in with precision by Dan Naylor, Jamie Nicholls got on the end of it to guide the ball past Ryan Hilliard in the Arlesey goal. It was no more than Dunstable deserved for a spirited second half performance. As with the previous game against Flackwell Heath, which also ended in a draw the important thing is that the Team are still able to pick up points despite not being at their best. The Blues were last beaten in the League two months ago and yesterday’s result makes it seven games unbeaten.

18 January 1961 - The Ceiling Is Lifted (And The Sky’s The Limit) On 18 January 1961, England finally lifted the wage restriction for footballers that had previously capped their earnings at £20 per week (£17 in the close season). The wage limit was one of two concerns for players of the time. The other was the retainand-transfer system, which gave the clubs complete authority regarding player movement from one club to another. Together, the two matters nearly prompted a player strike in January 1961, backed by the Professional Footballers’ Association and their chairman, Jimmy Hill. Hill, who played for Brentford from 194952, then for Fulham from 1952-61, became the PFA chairman in 1957 and continued the organization’s longstanding opposition to the wage restriction. The Football Association and the Football League, however, argued that the £20 weekly wage was a fair one, being 25% higher than the average industrial wage at the

time. But at a PFA meeting earlier that January, Bolton’s Tommy Banks generated support for a challenge, pointing out that anyone could take a crack at being a miner, but few miners could play football in front of 30,000 spectators every week. The threat of the impending strike forced the authorities to capitulate and lift the wage. While many players saw their wages doubled as a result, Hill’s Fulham teammate Johnny Haynes was the greatest beneficiary, becoming England’s first £100-a-week player. Since then, wages have increased dramatically, with several of the Premier League’s top players pulling in a reported £200,000 per week. The retain-and-transfer system remained in place until 1963.
