inside the boardroom A very warm welcome to tonight’s visitors, MK Irish who have travelled south down the A5. The Club is an amalgamation of Unite MK, Buckingham Athletic & Milton Keynes Irish Veterans and was formed in May 2020. Promoted to the SSML Premier Division this season, if their 7 – 0 defeat of Step 4 Kempston Rovers on Friday night is a pointer to anything then Terry Shrieves men are going to provide strong opposition. We hope everyone from the Club has an enjoyable evening with us and a safe journey home. Our own final pre-season friendly at Creasey Park took place on Thursday night when Step 3 AFC Rushden & Diamonds came to town. A tricky first 20 minutes saw a hastily assembled team, severely depleted by injuries, fall two goals behind, but we got back on terms through our own work-rate, endeavour and good football and were worthy of the draw. It’s been a difficult pre-season in terms of player recruitment. Gareth & Anthony have tried unceasingly to replace players as we said goodbye to several players who have joined Ryan Sturges at Tring, Joe Hankins has moved to AFC Dunstable, and many of our London based players from last season, Leo, Davide,Helder, Temi, George, Joe & Khy, have found clubs closer to home. Returning to the Club are three very familiar faces, Charlie Black, Joe Mead and Charlie Oddy. All three have played at levels higher than Step 5 and have looked good in pre-season. We also saw former Chairman, Manager, & Goalkeeper Coach, Gary Levy returned to the Club in the summer to add experience and football expertise to the committee. Gary has taken up a new post as Director of Football.

Our Community Benefit Society (CBS) status was approved on the 8th of July. Our CBS role in the community will see DTFC groups being run to support NHS partners, charities, and community groups each designed to help improve the lives of people with either medical or mental health problems that can be helped through football and gentle exercise. Our Walking Football group started on Wednesday on the 3G behind the main pitch. Open to everyone who wants to try and improve their fitness, mental health or feel a sense of belonging and have an enjoyable time. It is free to join and participate in. Please contact Sam Giddings if you want to join walkingfootball.dunstabletownfc@gmail.com On Saturday we are at home to North Greenford Utd in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. We have arranged with the Council to have a Caribbean hot food stall on site for the match. We’d like this to become a regular match-day feature but to make it happen all of us will need to support Clovis on the Jamaica Mi Crazy stall and the Creasey Park bar and tea and food bar. Vote not just with your feet folks but with your pockets and let’s make this a regular matchday feature. Finally, the sad news that Dylan Fitzpatrick suffered another broken leg during the draw on Saturday v St.Albans City U23’s. I know you will all join me in sending the best wishes of everyone at the Club to Dylan and wish him a speedy recovery and successful rehab. Dylan, as we all know, has huge talent and potential and is desperate to get back in a blue shirt. DUNSTABLE TOWN v mk irish - 3

Milton Keynes IRISH

opp

On June 1st 2020, three clubs joined together to create Milton Keynes Irish FC, Milton Keynes’ newest club. Milton Keynes Robins, known as Buckingham Town, Unite MK and Milton Keynes Irish Vets MILTON KEYNES IRISH VETERANS

BUCKINGHAM TOWN

Milton Keynes Irish Vets were founded at the start of the 2010-11 season and entered the Milton Keynes Veterans 3rd division where they finished 5th in their first season as a team.

Buckingham Town Football Club were established in 1883. The club played at Ford Meadow from 1883, until they were evicted at the end of the 2010-11 season. The clubs first taste of success came in the 1902-03 season, when they were crowned champions of the Aylesbury district league (later going on to win the same trophy twice more).

The team then went onto winning promotion in back-to-back seasons which saw them win three league titles in consecutive seasons as they climbed the Vets divisions before winning the Premier. It is fair to say that since the team was formed it has dominated veterans’ football within Milton Keynes seeing themselves win 14 trophies in 10 seasons including 4 doubles and one quadruple. The 2018-19 season saw Milton Keynes Irish Vets become the first team to win the Berks & Bucks Veterans County Cup when they beat Buckingham United 5-0 in the final.

In 1953, Buckingham Town were one of the founder members of the Hellenic League. However, they only played in the division for 4 years before moving back into the Aylesbury District League. In 1974, The Robins were moved into Division Two of the United Counties League (UCL) – where in their first season, they finished second and were promoted to the UCL Division One. Again, success only took a season, as The Robins again finished second and

CLUB INFO NICKNAME: The Irish FOUNDED: 1883 were promoted to the UCL Premier Division: completing back-to-back promotions. 1983 was a huge year for The Robins, as they celebrated their centenary year with a home friendly against the current Division Two leaders (and future Premier League champions) Leicester City- fielding players such as Gary Lineker and Alan Smith. The season was a great success. Led on the field by club legend Terry Shrieves, The Robins completed their centenary year by winning the UCL Premier Division and later completing the double by winning the UCL Knockout Cup. The following season (84-85) saw the clubs only ever FA Cup First Round appearance, which saw the club lose 1-0 to Leyton Orient. In the 1990-91 season, The Robins were crowned champions of the Southern League However, this would be the pinnacle of the clubs rise, as they were denied promotion due to Ford Meadow not meeting regulations for the rise. After being evicted from Ford Meadow at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season, The Robins found themselves moving to Manor Fields in Bletchley, Milton Keynes. Struggling for backing

from sponsors in Milton Keynes and a dwindling fan base, the club announced that they would be folding at the end of the 2017-18 season. The decision to fold Buckingham Town in 2018 was later reversed as Terry Shrieves agreed to become the manager of the club. The decision was later made to change the clubs name to Milton Keynes Robins on January 1st 2019, keeping ‘The Robins’ as a homage to the old club. The name change came to earn more recognition within Milton Keynes and receiving financial backing as the club was still struggling attract sponsorship. The one full season as Milton Keynes Robins was looking to an eventful one with the team in contention for promotion and securing a spot in the final of the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge trophy. The 2019/20 season however ended abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic which halted all football worldwide. The decision was later made to void the season the governing bodies responsible. WOLVERTON TOWN Wolverton’s story starts in the late 1880’s. The ground ‘Wolverton Park’ was built in 1885 and the club started in 1887 in the Southern League as Wolverton L & NWR FC. After the First World War Wolves joined the North Bucks League and finished runners up in 1920/1. In 1938/9 Wolves won the South Midlands League and after the war were runners up in the Spartan League. In the late 1940’s & BR was added to the club’s name and in 1957 reached the fourth round of the FA cup losing to Peterborough. In 1961 Wolves joined the United Counties League and in 1969/70 finished runners up and reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. Famous local names include John Field, Ian Capel, and Billy Atterbury in the 1960s. In the 1970s international cricketer Wayne Larkins played for the club. Peter Walton, the ex-Premier League referee and now TV adviser also had a spell with the club. In the 1980’s Wolves re-joined the Spartan League, then the Athenian League and then the Isthmian League finishing runner up in the Second Division in 1986/7. This proved to be the catalyst to the Wolves demise due to the additional costs involved and the Wolves finally

changed their name firstly to MK Wolverton Town and then AFC Wolverton and re-joined the South Midlands League. They eventually folded in January 1992. Unite MK Wolverton Town was reformed in 2004 and won various leagues and cups in New City Heating Sunday League and North Bucks & District Football League competitions, the club had one season at the Old Park then played at the Radcliffe School, Wolverton. The club moved into its new home, The New Park, at Field Lane, Greenleys on 20th July 2011 and entered the first team into the Spartan South Midlands League in 2012-13 with the reserves following in 2013-14. A veteran’s team was started in 2011-12 and the 2014-15 season saw the reintroduction of a new team in the MK Sunday League. The club changed named to Unite MK FC in July 2016 following eviction from Greenleys, due to the social club folding, relocating to Manor Fields, Fenny Stratford, Milton Keynes with just a first team. The Veterans side split from the club in May 2016 and remains Wolverton Town Veterans in its own right. The first team played in the South Midlands League at Step 7 level in Division 2 from 2016-20, in 2018-19 the club entered the FA Vase for the first time in its new history. A new Sunday team was formed in 2018-19 and won the Alf Carter Cup that season. A new reserve side was started in 2019-20 firstly in the Bedfordshire League then the North Bucks League. The club folded in May 2020 due to a lack of volunteers to run the club and was merged with Milton Keynes Robins and MK Irish Veterans forming Milton Keynes Irish on 1 June 2020.

MATCH REPORT thursday 29 july dunstable town 2-2 rushden & diamonds Dunstable Town made it five games without defeat on Thursday with a draw against AFC Rushden & Diamonds of the Southern League Premier Division Central, but they had to fight back from a two-goal deficit to do so, on a gloriously sunny evening at Creasey Park.

Some close calls early in the second half were weathered by the Blues before a low free kick was sent diagonally across the ball, getting all the way though to Stapleton who diverted the ball back across goal into the bottom corner. Dunstable were deservedly level.

The opening stages were uneventful until a pinpoint cross from the left was met with a perfectly placed header by Will Jones of Rushden, giving the visitors the lead.

Having already scored a brace, Will Jones was forced off in the last half hour with a knock, but that didn’t mean a lack of attacking flair for the away side, with the appropriately named Ben Diamond creating, and Jesse Akubuine having his effort blocked.

The Blues responded well, and with Chris Stapleton holding up play before cutting back for Tyler Fry to drive a daisy-cutter narrowly wide, came close to levelling. Shortly afterwards and Fry was involved again, this time failing to get on the end of a perfect ball across the face of goal, any touch at all would surely have seen an equaliser. Just short of the twenty-minute mark, it looked as though Dunstable would rue those missed chances. Ben Diamond played the ball to goal scorer Jones, who took a touch and blasted the ball into the top corner at the near post, leaving the home goalkeeper helpless. Tyler Fry’s early exertions paid off eight minutes later, leaping well to loop a header past the rooted Diamonds goalkeeper, bringing the Blues right back into the game.

Both teams maintained a will to get a winning goal into the late stages, several substitions ensuring the pace of the game remained high. Will Glennon came closest to getting that elusive winner in the dying minutes, heading just to the left of the frame from a corner on the right. Another encouraging result for Gareth Jackson’s Blues, against higher ranked opposition. Dunstable conclude their preseason on Saturday with a friendly against Berkhamsted Comrades, before Tuesday’s season opener, when Milton Keynes Irish visit Creasey Park. Patrick MacKay

Lorrell Smith came close to restoring the visitors two-goal lead before half-time, his thundering shot crashing off the crossbar via the fingertips of the goalkeeper’s gloves. DUNSTABLE TOWN v mk irish - 19

all the latest news and views from the dunstable town youth section We are all busy behind the scenes with the youth section. Our youth secretary Kristy Lewington is getting players signed on and pre-season training has started. She is also sizing players up for new kits which we will get the first glimpse of the kit at tonight’s game. A big thank you to Gareth Jackson for presenting the under 13s their Chiltern Youth League Div 1 championship winners medals at our game against St. Albans City Under 23s. It was great to see so many parents and family members at the game to share the special moment with Gary and the boys who went the season undefeated. Lastly, we would like to wish Dylan Fitzpatrick all the best with his rehab after his injury against St. Albans City. Sadly, we found out Saturday evening that Dylan had fractured the same leg a second time in just under a year. Everyone in the youth section wish him all the best in his recovery.

3 August 1952..

Singer, Actor, Spurs Superstar On 3 August 1952, World Cup winner and Tottenham Hotspur Hall-of-Famer Osvaldo “Ossie” Ardiles was born in Bell Ville, Argentina. The midfielder made his professional debut in 1973 for Argentinian club Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba and he earned his first international cap for Argentina’s senior side that same year. Five years and two clubs later (Belgrano, 1974, and Huracán, 1975-78) he was a regular for the national team, starting in every match but one of Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign.

in 1981 and 1982 (during that time, Ardiles also co-starred with Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, and Pelé in the 1981 film Victory and recorded the single “Ossie’s Dream” with Chas & Dave in 1981). Villa left in 1983, but Ardiles remained and went on to win the 1984 UEFA Cup with Tottenham. He left Spurs in 1988, but returned to manage the club briefly from 1993 to 1994. In 2008, he and Villa were jointly inducted into Tottenham’s Hall of Fame.

After the 1978 World Cup, he moved to Tottenham where he quickly became a fan favorite along with his fellow Argentinian teammate Ricardo Villa. The central midfield pair brought success to Spurs, helping them win back-to-back FA Cups
