the manager

joe deeney “Contrary to belief I am quite a simple man to play for. The basic prerequisites for me are simple, you run, you fight, you compete, and you NEVER EVER EVER quit no matter what happens.” Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and everyone associated with Moulton FC ahead of this evening’s cup game. I have said it loads of times the gap between the divisions is miniscule at best and tonight will be another tough fixture for us. Moulton have given some teams a right hammering this season. I am sure Moulton like us will want to progress to the next round, so we need to ensure we perform to the levels. I was once told that “time is a healer” when bad things happen. Unfortunately for me it certainly hasn’t helped heal the pain from Saturday. I will certainly not exaggerate how I feel, and I take no pleasure in letting people know just much it stings. I appreciate in life that there are far worse tragedies that happen than getting beaten 4-0 but when you are someone like me it is very hard to compartmentalise these things. Hopefully with experience the losses will heal easier and If I go on to one day manage at the level I strive for I am sure I won’t have so many supportive people around me. 2 moulton-print.indd 2

The support from everyone at the club on Saturday was humbling. The disappointment was obvious from us all but the kind words from so many were massively appreciated. Saturday night and most of Sunday was a write off, which only Managers will ever fully understand. You don’t sleep at all, you analyse everything, you watch the game over and over like it is going to change the result. I am fortunate I am as resilient as they come with a steel core and a huge fight in me. I have never quit on anything in my life, and I certainly won’t do now. I pride myself on fighting back from adversity and this week will be no different. I am nearly ready to park it and move on, well nearly! Anyone who listened to my post-match interview would have understood exactly why I was so infuriated. We started the game brightly, on the front foot and had some good attacking opportunities. An excellent save from Liam Gooch denied us opening the scoring when he made a superb save from our new signing Danny Webb. I felt we were comfortable

DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Moulton 08/11/2022 00:35:49

and didn’t see a major threat. We then concede a poor free kick which has a ridiculous amount of airtime for a free header at the far post and we are 1 down. I was furious with the goal; it was far too easy and out of nothing really. Then minutes later we concede another cheap corner, poor attempts at clearances and their lad hits one into the far corner. Second half we started brightly again and had 2 good chances to get 1 back which then would have given us something to hold on. The next goal was always going to be critical and unfortunately it was Stotfold who got it. A ball down the sides of us again far too easily culminated in a cross and we concede too easily again. Just over a minute later we were 4-0 down to really rub salt into the wounds. Another woeful bit of play and their lad is given the freedom of Dunstable to slot it home. The most disappointing thing was our reaction when we went 3-0 down. We lacked voices, our body language was poor and too many didn’t show the fight required to get us back into the game. Contrary to belief I am quite a simple man to play for. The basic pre-requisites for me are simple, you run, you fight, you compete, and you NEVER EVER EVER quit no matter what happens. We didn’t do the pre-requisites well enough and it as simple as that. Supporters will all have an opinion on me and my players, and I have no problems with that at all. I feel as though we have enough credit in the bank to accept that maybe Saturday was an off day. The hardest thing for me was seeing our supporters clapping us off, singing in full support despite the terrible performance and the fact we gave them nothing to cheer about. I can only apologise to the Regiment and all the supporters who turn up week in week out to support

the lads. I would have completely understood if we had been booed off. I said it in the post-match interview, and I stand by everything I said. My players are great people, but we need to be more ruthless. On a positive note, I am delighted to welcome Danny Webb to the group. I watched Danny several times at Newport Pagnell Town last season and every game caused havoc with opposition defences. He had other opportunities to earn more money elsewhere but chose here as his destination and I am delighted he has. He is a proven goal scorer and have no doubts he will be a big hit with our supporters. Tonight, we can welcome back Connor Coulson, Liam McCrohan and Kyle Faulkner which is good news for us. We are still a little while from being able to bring back Kyle Davison-Gordon who gets his cast off next week. He has been a huge miss as he brings a natural balance to our defence as does Dylan Baker who is still recovering from a shoulder injury. I am with Terrence Muchineripi at the hospital this week to get an update on his knee injury and I am sure all supporters like me are hoping it is nothing too serious. I hope it Is the last time I/we have to apologise for the abject nonsense we served up on Saturday. I am the Head Coach; it falls at my door and believe me there is no one bigger to take it than me. Criticism is part of the job, and it isn’t about my players being on their own. I am here at the front taking the rightful criticism. Privately I criticise individuals but never publicly. We will bounce back. Enjoy the game.

Andrew Madaras “Saturday’s loss to Stotfold was a bitter pill to swallow. Thanks to all of you who stayed to the end and still gave our lads a fantastic round of applause at the final whistle.”

A very warm welcome to tonight’s visitors, Moulton in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy. Our opponents have travelled from Northamptonshire and compete in the 1st Division of the SSMFL. They currently sit in 9th position having taken 21 points from their first 13 games. We hope their playing, coaching staff, supporters and committee members have an enjoyable visit to Dunstable and have a safe journey home come the final whistle.

The lads walked through torrential rain, strong winds and even the odd ray of sunshine, to achieve their goal. Imagine their disappointment though to learn with only a final 25 minutes of walking in front of them I send the news through that the match has been postponed. To their great credit they continued, and reached their intended destination, rehydrated themselves and bolstered the local economy before being chauffeur driven home by Gary Levy.

I want to start by paying tribute to Richard Scott, Dean Falla, Andy Burrows & Peter Bottom, who walked 21kms from Creasey Park to Harpenden to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the Ollie Foundation, to buy a defibrillator for the Club as well as additional financial support for our own CBS activities, Walking Football, Sphere at the Glider and Chums & Crumbs, the latter a joint venture with Titan PCN & SLL.

I do not think there is a club in the SSMFL that can claim parity or equivalence with DTFC supporters. Last year Peter organized fundraising ventures which raised £5,000 for the L&D hospital, and every week our owners and our fans provide the financial backing for us to provide nearly 10 hours of free activities, support, friendship and company for people who have lived experience of mental ill-health and are in recovery,

4 moulton-print.indd 4

people who may be lonely and socially isolated and people who want to increase their levels of physical activity, fitness and mental well-being. If you’ve not yet supported the guys, can I ask you to please & make a small donation on the fundraising page www. crowdfunder.co.uk/dtfc2 There’s been some half-baked, tone deaf, ill-informed comments on social media regarding the Club’s community ventures which if you’ve had the misfortune to suffer eye pollution reading, please look away, and come and chat to me, Matt or any of the Directors and we’ll happily explain how we spend the money raised. The Club’s finances are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and as an asset locked, legal entity we keep our house in order and have the good sense and manners not to comment on other Club’s governance or business plans which we can’t possibly know anything about. Saturday’s loss to Stotfold was a bitter pill to swallow. Thanks to all of you who stayed to the end and still gave our lads a fantastic round of applause at the final whistle. No early walk outs. Just singing and chanting for the full 90 minutes and letting the Team know how much they mean to you. That’s what I mean about the quality of our support, passionate, partisan, loud and maybe a wee bit off key but to a man, the Regiment sang their hearts out and I’m hugely grateful to them and all of you who braved the rain and cold. We’ll have better days than that, I think we all know that. When we appointed Joe & Kyle, his words of infinite wisdom have stayed etched in my memory. “There will be bumps in the road and success doesn’t come in a straight line”

I’m particularly pleased to belatedly welcome Danny Webb to Dunstable Town. Danny was part of the victorious Newport Pagnell Town side that won the FA Vase last season. Behind the scenes and away on a well-earned family weekend away, Kristy Lewington did all the Club’s necessary paperwork to make sure Danny was able to be registered in time for kick off. Thanks Kristy. We now have a CBS Owners’ Hub on matchdays. The new gazebo will serve as somewhere for the Club’s owners to gather and chew the fat and hopefully encourage others to sign up and become owners too. We’ll have information on the Club’s community activities as well as ownership details. Please try and come as early as you can on Friday evening for the 2nd round Isuzu FA Vase tie against Enfield. We have arranged additional catering from Farmhouse Foods who will be serving pie and mash with a generous discount for DTFC owners/Blue Card Holders. Finally, my thanks to the Co-op for donating over £4,600 to the Club on Saturday, and for keeping us as one of their causes to support for a further 12 months and to Asda who have chosen to make Chums and Crumbs one of the three groups to take part in the Token Scheme which will run between January and April 2023. This will see Chums and Crumbs receive a minimum of £300, and a maximum of £500. We’re hugely grateful to both supermarket retailers and I hope you can show your support for them as they have done for us.

Moulton Moulton has a population of over 3,000. It is situated about 4 miles (6 km) north of central Northampton. Moulton has been affected by the expansion of Northampton yet retains a village identity. In the village centre, a tributary of the Nene river flows from the east of the village in a westerly direction where it joins the Nene near Chapel Brampton. Medieval fish ponds in the village were fed from this tributary. Moulton Football Club was registered with the FA in 1896 playing a first recorded game against the nearby village of Old which ended in a 2-2 draw. They moved to their current pitch in 1953 competing in the East Midlands, then Northampton Town league then switching to the Northamptonshire Combination in 1979. The aim has been to compete at step 6 level of football, and with huge investment over the years and tireless input from numerous volunteers they achieved this goal last season. The club won the Northamptonshire Combination Premier Division in 2004, and finished runners up in 2005 and 2006. In 2022, despite finishing 3rd the club was promoted into the Spartan South Midlands League Division One. They have a thriving junior & ladies section along with one of the largest walking football set ups in the country. They are looking forward to hosting teams from the Spartan South Midlands League to their ground many who they will have never played against before.

match report A first defeat of the season in the League for Joe Deeney’s men was greeted with a unanimous display of solidarity and support from the Club’s supporters, who despite the heavy rain and “collective bad day at the office” performance, gave the players and coaching staff a standing ovation and some of the loudest singing of “Oh Dunstable We Love You” heard all afternoon. All credit to Stotfold who moved to the top of the League and opened up a twopoint lead over second place Crawley Green. For the Blues, now in 8th place it meant the last win had been four ago against Leighton Town with three away draws coming before Saturday. Before kickoff, Dunstable announced the signing of Danny Webb from Newport Pagnell Town. Danny is a proven goalscorer at this level and has the distinction of being part of Newport Pagnell’s FA Vase winning team. Webb looked lively on his debut with intelligent positioning and running and early doors had the ball in the back of the net only to see the Assistant Referee’s flag go up to chalk them off. Good pressure at the start of each half from the Blues though were false dawns. Stotfold were well organized, disciplined and as Deeney said in his post-match interview with Andy Burrows on the Talk of the Town podcast out thought and out fought our boys today. Deeney apologized to the Club’s supporters for the performance and as we all knew he would, took responsibility and made himself available to every supporter afterwards who wanted to

know his thoughts on what had gone wrong and not until every question had been answered and every sponsor had been given the opportunity to pick his brain did he leave Creasey Park. Dunstable will be ruing their long injury list and the suspensions to McCrohan & Faulkner, but the team, on paper anyway, should have provided tougher opposition than it did. Stotfold’s first goal came on the half hour and an even better second came less than 10 minutes later. The last time they had been behind by two goals was in the FA Cup defeat to Shefford Town & Campton two months earlier. Before the hour mark, Dunstable made the first of three substitutions with Ruari Mills replaced by Sean Immanuel. The floodlights were on at 4.15pm to signal the clocks going back the previous weekend. Clubs will be given the option of 2pm kick off times to try and save money and energy over the winter months. As the minutes ticked by Dunstable’s rhythm petered out. Stotfold had withstood a couple of chances from the home team. The game was effectively won on 70 minutes when Stotfold scored their third and then adding salt to the wounds popped up with a fourth just three minutes later. The Stotfold boys kept their shape and locked the door at the back and were able to return to their home ground for the firework celebrations.

DUNSTABLE TOWN vs Moulton 08/11/2022 00:37:05

Last season we lost our first six league games and having also fallen out of the FA Cup and the FA Vase, things were looking bleak. Results since have certainly been better although we are under no illusion this will be a tough season in a very competitive league. However, spare a thought for the fans of Stoke Gabriel Football Club who ply their trade in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division East, step 6 of the English National League structure. The club hail from the beautiful village of the same name in Devon on the banks of the River Dart, playing their home games at the modest Speedwell KIA Stadium. The club had played ten games by October and lost the lot. Having been in 16th place when the 2019-20 season was curtailed by COVID-19, the club saw personnel changes during the summer with players, coaches and committee members moving on, meaning that the squad was built around the club’s Under18s side. “You can’t win anything with kids” - the famous line uttered by Alan Hansen on the opening day of the 1995/96 season after Manchester United’s Class of 92 had been beaten by Aston Villa. Never has such a true sentence been uttered in the case of Stoke Gabriel. They kicked off the season with an away game at Torridgeside. They lost 14-0. In their first home game of the season against Crediton United they did better, keeping the score down to 13-0. Since then, they lost all eight games. There was a glimmer of hope that new signings would have a positive impact

as they restricted Ivybridge Town to just three second half goals but then they finished with ten men due to injuries against Plymouth Marjon who scored ten unanswered second half goals to make the final score 14Whilst they recorded their biggest defeat of the season against third from bottom Bovey Tracey, they did get off the mark themselves in the 18-1 defeat and followed it up with another goal in the 9-1 defeat at Elburton Villa. Their star players so far? Seventeen-year-old goalkeeper Josh Organ, naturally. Whilst the young squad is finding life at the senior level tough, they are more than good enough playing at their own age level, winning three of their four league games. The village has an approximately 1,000-year-old yew tree in the churchyard of The Church of St Mary and St Gabriel, a church which has stood since Norman times. Legend has it that if you walk backwards seven times round the yew’s main stem you will be granted a wish. We can only wonder how many of their fans were walking around that tree. The season was eventually curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Stoke Gabriel having conceded 207 goals, scoring seven times, in 18 matches. On 2 June 2021, Stoke Gabriel announced they had merged with Torbay Police to create Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police. The first team continue at step 6 in the South West Peninsula League, alongside a reserve team playing in the South Devon League; and a range of youth sides.

The Pieman (@_TheRealPieMan) is a Tottenham Hotspur fan who has attended thousands of matches and hundreds of grounds throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. This week he visits Olympique de Marseille. Marseille is the oldest city in France as well as one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. It was founded around 600BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea and known as Massalia. Marseille has been a trading port since ancient times and is the thirdlargest metropolitan area in France after Paris and Lyon. In 1792, the city became a focal point of the French Revolution and though France’s national anthem was born in Strasbourg, it was first sung by volunteers from Marseille, hence the name the crowd gave it: La Marseillaise.

their fortunes. Between 1989 and 1992 four league titles were won. The club also reached the European Cup Final in 1991 (a narrow defeat to Red Star Belgrade on penalties) and in 1993 when victory over AC Milan was secured courtesy of Basile Boli’s goal in Munich. The journey to Marseille via Paris, facilitated an arrival at my hotel early evening the day before the match. The frequent bus services from the airport take you to Gare de Marseille-SaintCharles, the main transport hub for the city. Conveniently, this is where I was

Olympique de Marseille was founded as Omnisport Club in 1892 by Rene Dufaure. Initially known as US Phoceenne and Football Club de Marceille, the current name was adopted five years later acknowledging the founding of the city and the Greek heritage. At first Rugby Union was the focus of the club with football starting in 1902. In 1986 Bernard Tapie became president and transformed 42 moulton-print.indd 42

staying. After checking in, I had the opportunity to explore the city. My immediate impression was that this was a rather tired and shabby place, interwoven with historic charm and character. At a café, a short distance from the View Port area, this Pieman enjoyed his Tandoori Chicken Naan, ensuring a thirst that required quenching. Having explored the area a little, my travelling companion and I settled at a very small bar away from the bank holiday/ halloween throng that had engulfed this part of town. A few beers later when settling our bill, the proprietors insisted on buying us a last drink. This was consumed listening to music and singing where we also encountered a woman who told us she had danced with Midge Ure! “He wasn’t very tall and only came up to here” she told us! Visiting Stade Velodrome is not the most comfortable experience, and you get the impression that despite charging top dollar, they do not really want you there. We were escorted to the stadium on a fleet of buses. The operation was at best shambolic. I had walked to the stadium earlier in the day, taking around 35 minutes. The bus journey took longer, as we were transported to the north of the city before looping back south via numerous diversions. The gendarmerie,

in conducting entry to the stadium, were abrupt and obstructive. The stadium has a wonderful reputation and does look impressive from the outside and in some parts inside. However, closer inspection reveals something bland and rather outdated. It is also rather dirty, much in keeping with a lot of Marseille. As is often the case on the continent, netting impedes your view of the playing area. The home support was loud and bouncy as befits their reputation. I agree with the pre-match hype about this being a hostile environment to visit and those supporters are the main factor in this.

One end of the ground was closed by UEFA, following crowd problems at an earlier match. Tottenham Hotspur rode their luck in this final group stage match. The last kick winning goal ensured finishing top of this most topsy turvy group. Our buses were parked inside the stadium and having been locked in at the end for an hour, we then endured another magical mystery tour before reaching our hotel around 01:15 over two hours from when the match ended. Attendance: 50,768 Admission: 70.00 Eur Programme: Not issued
