inside the boardroom A warm welcome to the Committee, supporters, coaching & playing staff of North Greenford Utd for today’s Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary tie We hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon at Creasey Park and wish you a safe journey home. North Greenford Utd FC have been moved sideways from the Spartan League into the Combined Counties League. The Covid enforced premature ending of the last two seasons meant that despite both clubs being in the same league we didn’t play any of the four scheduled fixtures.

couple of weeks. As a final addition to the Community Benefit Society Team, we appointed Yvonne Verla to be the Club’s Mental Health Advocate. Yvonne will co-ordinate the Clubs links with Mind BLMK, CALM, Minds2gether and NHS groups.

The Emirates FA Cup always brings with it thrills, spills, upsets and plenty of debating points come the final whistle. But to get the match played, requires a lot of admin work and I want to say thank you to the NGUFC Match Secretary, Darren Barden, for his part in making the arrangements for today work.

Thank you to everyone who has already become an owner of the Club in the last week. We’ve deliberately kept the CBS launch low key to test our IT systems and membership process. It has proven to be a bit more difficult than we had expected so we are behind in being able to process everyone’s membership details and arrange delivery of share certificates and membership cards etc. Adrian Witkowski, our CBS Administrator, has worked his socks off in keeping everything in order and deserves our unstinting thanks.

We announced a two-year Main Sponsor deal with the GMB Beds County Branch on Thursday. We have been very fortunate to have retained the support of Branch Secretary Martin Foster and his colleagues during the troubled and uncertain past 18 months and look forward to working closely with them in our community ventures.

Gareth & Anthony will be looking for a positive response from the players today after Tuesday night’s set back. We weren’t at our best due to injuries and came up against a team that had put 7 past Step 4 Kempston Rovers four days earlier. A healthy crowd of 138 witnessed a good game of football even if the points did go north up the A5 to Bletchley.

Our Walking Football group met for the second time on Wednesday and were joined by three new players who had heard of the scheme via word of mouth and on social media. If you’re interested in joining, please email Sam Giddings at walkingfootball.dunstabletownfc@ gmail.com

Finally, please support Clovis and his team at Jamaica Mi Crazy hot food stall and the Creasey Park bar and tea bar this afternoon. If you want us to provide a better match-day experience, we must ensure that it works financially for both Clovis and Creasey Park.

Patrick Mackay has agreed to organize and manage the Walking Club to start in the next

north-greenford-fac.indd 3

Now let’s do our bit and get behind Gareth & the Team, lets be the 12th Man today and see the boy’s home.

The club was founded in September 1944 as a youth team. The following season saw the formation of a senior side with the club entering the Harrow League. In 1983 the club was promoted to the Spartan League but in 1994 it resigned to re-join the Middlesex League. Keen to regain Senior Status, ground improvements were undertaken, including the installation of floodlights, and in 2002 the club was elected to the Combined Counties League. In 2003/04, managed by Steve Hawkins, the club were runners up in the Premier Challenge Cup losing 4-1 to AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of over 5,000 at Woking FC. In 2004/05 the club finished League runners-up and in the following year reached the League Cup semifinal. In 2006/07 the team, under Mick Harvey, went one better, but unfortunately lost 4-1 to Merstham in the final. Steve Ringrose took over the Manager’s job at the beginning of season 2008/09. In his first season Steve led the team to second place in the Premier League with the club finishing Runners-up to Bedfont Green. Season 2009/10

proved the most successful in the club’s history when the First Team became Combined Counties Champions, earning promotion to the newly-formed Southern Football League Division One Central, as well as winning the MFA Charity Cup beating Enfield Town 1-0 at Hampton & Richmond’s ground in front of a large crowd. Despite having a difficult first season at the higher level the First Team succeeded in retaining its Step 4 status. However, despite notable cup successes, the first half of season 2011/12 saw the club struggling in the league. Steve Ringrose was replaced by Neil Shipperley in December 2011 and Shipps managed to successfully steer the side away from the threat of relegation. Experiencing an even more difficult time at the start of season 2012/13, Neil Shipperley was re-appointed for a second term replacing JonBarrie Bates as First Team Manager. However,

CLUB INFO NICKNAME: The Blues FOUNDED: 1944 the team continued to struggle and, having lost 14 league matches on the trot, the only consolation was that Woodford United had still failed to notch up a single point. The campaign that year was saved by an amazing end-ofseason run which saw the team finish 19th – just above the relegation places. Hoping to continue where they left off at the start of the following season but, again after excellent cup runs, they struggled in the league and narrowly escaped the drop after crucial wins against their two fellow relegation contenders, Chertsey and Ashford Town (Middx). Reserve Team Manager Paul Palmer, supported by Don Bennett, replaced Shipps following Neil’s resignation midway through the season. Following an indifferent start to the 2014/15 campaign it was decided to part company with Paul and ask Don to take over. Results though did not improve and in December 2014 Don tendered his resignation. Reserve Manager Barry Morris took over assisted by coaches George Bouhet and Fitzroy McLeod. After an initial struggle another impressive end-of-season run saw the team finish four points clear of bottom club AFC

Hayes, and we were granted a reprieve by the Football Association. Barry and his team were re-appointed for the forthcoming campaign, but in September Barry resigned and George took over. Unfortunately, poor results again left the club rooted at the bottom of the table, and in November 2015 the committee appointed two ex-Greenford players – Ricky Pither and Danny Bennell – as joint First Team managers to replace George. Despite some promising performances, results still did not improve and four wins and six draws were not enough to secure the points needed to avoid the drop. On this occasion there was to be no chance of another reprieve. We were offered a place in the Combined Counties Premier Division after successfully appealing against an FA decision to place the club in the Hellenic League and, with their wide knowledge of local clubs and players, Ricky and Danny’s team were invited to continue in their roles, with Mark Chandler taking over as joint manager following Danny’s resignation. Unfortunately, due to poor league results which left the club languishing at the foot of the CCL Premier Division table, the NGU committee reluctantly decided to part company with Ricky and Mark at the beginning of October 2016. The experienced management team of Danny Vincent and Colin Murphy were offered and accepted the position, and were duly appointed in time to take charge of the Chertsey Town home game on 11th October. After the poor start the club eventually finished the 2016/17 season in a creditable 13th position on 58 points, and with Danny and Colin still in charge, assisted by Terry Schofield who had joined the First XI management team, they were looking for a higher finish the following season. Unfortunately, after an excellent start with a fine FA Cup away win against Welwyn Garden City, during the earlier part of the 2017/18 campaign they became the league’s draw specialists dropping points in games they should have won. From the turn of the year the season will be most remembered for some of the worst weather conditions in living memory with the

6 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v North Greenford United north-greenford-fac.indd 6

season extended to the second week in May 2018. Despite ending the campaign on a high with four wins on the spin, overall 2017/18 was a disappointing season with the team again finishing 13th but with fewer points than the previous year. Two major changes were then forced on the club during the close season. First last season’s management team unexpectedly resigned and this was followed by an FA decision to move us to the Spartan South Midlands Football League Premier Division. On the management side they were quick to re-appoint Paul Palmer and Matt Penfold who had just won promotion from the SSMFL Division One with Southall. With the experienced squad they brought to the club, they had high expectations at the start of the 2018/19 campaign. Unfortunately, these were not realised and the team became embroiled in a relegation fight. Although wins against Leighton Town, Edgware and Biggleswade United helped secure their survival as a Step 5 club, a 16th place finish with just 34 points on the board left the committee with no choice but to make managerial changes. Following an impressive interview and an extremely successful 2 seasons as Under 18’s manager the decision was taken to offer the First Team post to Colin Jones a position which Colin, supported by his full Youth management team, accepted. In April 2021 Colin Jones decided, for personal reasons, to resign as First Team Manager. The Committee met shortly afterwards and agreed unanimously to offer the position to Assistant Managers Paul Mills and Gary Brown. Paul and Gary accepted the offer, agreeing with each other to share the responsibilities of the post. Having decided to go ahead with their NLS re-structuring plans, it was confirmed that, as expected, the club would be placed in the newly formed Combined Counties Premier Division North, returning to the league they had been moved away from to join the Spartan League at the start of the 2018/19 season.

MATCH REPORT tuesday 3 august Dunstable Town 0-4 Milton Keynes Irish Dunstable Town started their league campaign with a defeat on Tuesday evening, with visitors Milton Keynes Irish punishing the Blues by scoring three goals in the second half, despite a relatively even first period. With under two minutes on the clock, Town’s goalkeeper Dan Gould was called into action, first palming away Andre Olukanmi’s fizzing cross before saving well from Mason Spence’s follow up shot. Dominic Lawless had another chance for the newly promoted visitors, after good work on the left wing saw the ball arrive to him in the centre of the box, but after making space for the shot, he blasted well over the frame of the goal. Dunstable came into the contest after the opening ten minutes, with a bit more possession in attacking areas, but failed to create any clear cut chances, with L’Kharmi Gale sending an effort from range high and wide. Irish came close again on twenty minutes, and it was once again Mason Spence, who leapt highest at a corner, but could only direct his header narrowly wide of the goal. Ten minutes later and Dunstable were made to regret the chances they were giving away. A throw-in from the right was collected by an attacker, and the resulting cross into a dangerous area was turned into his own net by Jeremiah Debayo.

they came was when a corner was flicked into the waiting goalkeeper’s arms. The home team started the second half with attacking intent, and debutant Sam Gibson forced the MK goalkeeper into a decent save low to his left with a shot from twenty-five yards. The task at hand for the Blues became more complicated halfway through the second half when a footrace ended with the referee judging that Matt Ellis had tripped the attacker. The ball was heading into the corner, but it resulted in his second yellow card of the night in his first appearance for Town. With a man advantage, the visitors went in search of a second goal, looking to put the game beyond doubt, and within ten minutes of the red card, their goal tally was double with a near-post header leaving Gould with no chance. The game was gone by this point, but MK Irish put the cherry on top with two further goals in the last five minutes. The first came when Scott Belgrove was sent through on goal and skillfuly lifted the ball over the onrushing Gould, before neat footwork in the box saw Spence’s deflected shot dribble into the bottom corner, concluding the scoring. Patrick MacKay

With half time approaching, the Blues were looking to get an equaliser, but were still not creating any clear chances, and the closest 20085 DUNSTABLE TOWN v North Greenford United - 19

IMPROVING THE LIVES BECOMING A COMMUNITY BENEFIT SOCIETY

Dunstable Town FC have an interesting history. I think that’s the polite way of putting it. Formed in 1883 the Club had several homes before finding permanent residency at Creasey Park Those of a certain vintage may have witnessed the mercurial magic of George Best when he graced the hallowed turf of Creasey Park in 1974, playing three times for the Blues as a favour to his old Manchester United teammate, Barry Fry, who was the Club’s Manager. Fry, in his first job in football management went on to manage Barnet, Birmingham City & Peterborough Utd, where he is Director of Football. But Best hasn’t been the only former International to wear the Club’s colours, former England player Jeff Astle scored 34 times for the Blues in the 1974 -75 season. Kerry Dixon is another former England International who started his career at Dunstable Town, before going on to play for Reading & then heading to the bright lights of London’s Kings Road, where he scored 193 times for Chelsea making him the Club’s alltime third most prolific goal scorer. More recently, Luton Town player Peter Kioso played for the Club as an 18-year-old in the 2017 -18 season, and at the end of last season another 18 year old, Eric Ameyaw left the Club to sign for Fulham. But, to misquote Freddie Mercury, it hasn’t always been a “bed of roses and a pleasure cruise”. Tales of money in envelopes, dodgy dealings and financial mismanagement have also seen the Club lurch from peak to trough and back again on too occasions causing the Club to go out of business for four years in the mid to late 1990’s and a partial shut-down in the 1970’s. Us football fans, are, by and large, masochists. We derive a perverse sense of pleasure from following our teams’ (mis)fortunes, getting

24 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v North Greenford United north-greenford-fac.indd 24

battered by the elements on terraces without covers, travelling long distances on bitterly cold Tuesday nights to see our teams succumb to a blatant dive in the last minute of stoppage time. And because we’re masochists and creatures of habit we do it every season. But we at least have the certainty that our Club will be still in existence for us to experience this self-inflicted pain and punishment we secretly enjoy. But try asking the fans of Macclesfield, Bury, and North Ferriby who have all seen their Clubs fold recently due to the financial pressures of boom-and-bust football economics, about the certainty of where they’ll be at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. The pressure to achieve success at all costs comes at too high a price for many Clubs. As our own experience in the 1970’s and 1990’s showed, we’ve also ridden the football financial rollercoaster and fallen from grace in so doing. The global Covid pandemic wrought havoc and despair to the lives of millions. While the nation mourned the lives of countless thousands, many of the Club’s commercial sponsors saw their own businesses and livelihoods severely affected by lockdowns and the cessation of normal trading. Faced with a loss of nearly half its income the Club had to fold its Cup winning Development Team, circle the wagons and concentrate on keeping just one senior team playing last season. Dunstable Town became managed by the Club’s fans in 2017. Fan ownership is a relatively recent concept of running a football Club. Many clubs, even at non-league level,

rely heavily on the generosity of individual donors to keep their clubs afloat, or own their own facilities and can supplement match day income by hiring out their facilities to community groups, or running popular social events from their clubhouses. As tenants of the Council and with no individual benefactors that is simply not an option for Dunstable Town. Therefore, to protect the Club’s history and ensure a sustainable future we began talks with the Football Supporters’ Association earlier this year and will now start the new season in August as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, the Club will operate as a social enterprise combining both traditional football activities with working in our local communities on improving the mental and physical health and well-being of individuals. Regulars on match-days at Creasey Park may not notice much of a difference. It’s on nonmatch days though that being a CBS club starts to make a difference. The Club has been fortunate over the past few seasons to have developed a strong relationship with Mind BLMK (Beds, Luton, and Milton Keynes) and for the past three seasons have had the Mind BLMK logo on the front of the playing kit. There is ample anecdotal evidence to suggest that this move encouraged and empowered many people to seek help for emotional and psychological problems they were facing from both statutory and non-statutory mental health services. With Mind BLMK as a strategic partner the Club has worked on initiatives to actively promote better mental health through football and exercise. All very noble and worthwhile you may say, but how does this benefit the Club’s supporters?

to become owners of Dunstable Town FC. By simply purchasing a maximum of one share per person a supporter automatically becomes an owner of Dunstable Town FC. It’s a scheme that has been championed by League clubs like AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Exeter City, and non-league clubs such as AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Lewes FC and FC United of Manchester. It is the ultimate manifestation of fan power and the pinnacle of supporter commitment to become an owner of the Club you support. It means that you don’t have to be the owner of an oil well or a gas field to own your own football club, you can be like 1,600 people who own Lewes FC or 800 who own AFC Rushden & Diamonds, receive your owner’s share certificate and be part of the Club that is a benefit to the community. Owners enjoy benefits from the Club’s Blue Card, shop and save discount scheme, receive preferential rates from Club partners in the health and leisure sector, the Club’s own Nike kit supplier and a growing number of shops and traders in the town, keen to do their bit and show support for the Club With A Purpose. And if that wasn’t enough, owners automatically get voting rights on electing the Club’s Board of Directors every year, choosing new kit, and consulted on future plans for the Club. For less than the price of a couple of cinema tickets and a bag of popcorn you can become an owner of Dunstable Town FC and support the great work we’re doing with our partners improving the lives of others. Children’s ownership is half price but has no voting rights until aged 16. For details on how to own your local club, please visit our website. www.dunstabletownfc.co.uk/ownership

The answer is very simple. Supporters, and members of the public, have the opportunity

on this day

7 August 1999..

What’s Black, White, And Red All Over? On 7 August 1999, Alan Shearer marked his 100th appearance for Newcastle by receiving the first red card of his career. The striker joined Newcastle, his hometown club, in 1996 after five seasons at Southampton and four at Blackburn Rovers (with whom he won the Premier League in 1995) and had made 99 appearances for the club prior to the start of the 1999-2000 season.

Referee Uriah Rennie ruled that Shearer was guilty of “excessive use of the elbows” and showed the striker a second yellow, ejecting him from the match. Villa went on to win 0-1 with a 75th-minute goal from Julian Joachim. Just over two years later, Shearer received a second red in a match against Charlton, but it was later rescinded.

He had acquired the nickname “Mary Poppins” for his squeaky-clean public image, due in large part to the fact that he had never been sent off. That changed in 1999. Newcastle were hosting Aston Villa in the season opener and the match remained scoreless deep into the second half. In the 70th minute, Shearer, who was already on a yellow card, battled Villa’s Colin Calderwood for the ball, leaving the defender on the ground.
