FROM the boardroom On behalf of the club can I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Northwood this afternoon. The FA Trophy affords both clubs an opportunity to progress in a prestigious competition. Outside the FA Cup ,this tournament really does matter to clubs like our own. Our game at Bromsgrove Sporting last Saturday was a tight entertaining affair. On another day a draw or even a win would not have been undeserved. Sitting in the stand I was surrounded by opposition supporters who were really impressed by our style of play , technique and application. There is no doubt that these young Blues are worthy opposition to all comers. Today our team will be sporting the Mind BLMK logo on the front of their shirts for the first time. Wednesday was World Mental Health Day, and the club were pleased to announce that for the remainder of this season, both our First Team, and our Development Team’s home and away shirts will proudly display the logo of our Charity Partner, Mind BLMK (Bedfordshire, Luton & Milton Keynes) in all our remaining competitive fixtures. Mind BLMK do fine work highlighting and supporting the need for good mental health and wellbeing. Their local focus matches perfectly with our goal to be a true community club. Next Saturday we host Corby Town in the

league. Before that game, Weatherfield, our Community Partner School, will be hosting the latest of their friendly tournaments. As on previous occasions we will be welcoming the young people and their parents back to club after the tournament for food and then to watch the game. We are delighted to do this and look forward to the atmosphere that their presence helps to create. I’ve mentioned it before and make no apologies for mentioning again. We’ve recently launched our ‘100’ club . For just £3 per week you can enter our weekly draw, with 50% of the takings going into the prize pot, and the other 50% going to our player budget. It’s a fun way to support the club and we are very heartened by the uptake so far. Details are available on our website and on our match day Market Stall. On the social side of the club, a reminder that we have the return of the very popular Race Night on the 27th October. Tickets are available at £5 , which includes food. This will be held at the Hospital Social Club, starting at 7.30pm So as ‘cup fever’ hits the town let’s really get behind the lads today and create some history!

Enjoy the m atch Neil Barker

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and welcome to everyone from Northwood. It’s been a long week, as we faced yet another goalkeeper crisis and with another keeper today, this will be our 6th of the season as we’re yet to hit midOctober. We are waiting for a conclusion to scans on Nathan, but were sure he’s not too far away. With Fred being recalled to Borehamwood this again left us with yet another problem. Although Fred could yet return as an option, this left us with a huge problem for today and we spent the last few days doing everything we could again. I’m delighted on that note to welcome back to club favourite Nick Hayes. Nick will have a terrific future in this game and we have made such an impression on him that he was delighted to return. All departments of our club will be delighted to see him back, albeit as temporary help, for which we are grateful. Our lads were very disappointed with the result at Bromsgrove and perhaps that shows the improvements and standards we have set. We played a friendly at Kings Langley in the week and a few lads were able to get some much needed game time and we showed some terrific attacking play again. We’re very grateful for the ongoing support and relationship with this great humble club. When I was there I looked around and I can see ‘something’. Something is happening. They have a great arrangement with Watford Ladies and that combined with other great efforts

is really showing transformation at that club, as they look to establish themselves at the higher levels of non-league. Credit to them for sustainable clever progress. I watched our development squad for a time following our training session on Thursday. They suffered a defeat. No one likes losing, but the mind-set of the club has changed and this brings us online with good professional clubs, meaning we are defining success of our squads. When we look at the recent performance of our development squad, as players progressing to the first team, it’s been terrific. I would say better than most pro clubs. When you see players progressing, clearly weakening the squad they progress from, that then takes a complete buy in and mind-set understanding from all levels of the club. As we have recently welcomed Rio Dasilva into the first team environment, it yet again endorses our pathway ethos and credit for that has to go to Colin and Simon, who have adapted brilliantly to our new club ethos. I speak to Colin regularly and it’s refreshing to hear his delight when he sees players progressing and accepts the affect that has on his team. This is a changing culture that others will want the formula to... I can assure you.

NORthWOOd hIStORY The current club was formed in 1926, following several other outfits that had carried the town’s name in earlier years, the first known, Northwood FC, being formed in September 1899, but it is not clear how long they existed. A team called Northwood Rovers played in the Harrow & District League up to the First World War, but a new Northwood FC was launched after the conflict, in September 1919, and soon emmanuel Northwood were also competing in the Harrow & District League. The next club to commence was Holy Trinity Northwood, again in the Harrow League, whilst in 1922 Northwood moved to the Uxbridge & District League. However, having lost their first nine fixtures in the second season, Northwood found that they were unable to field a team for later games and the club folded. Around the same time, emmanuel Northwood also withdrew from the Harrow League. After two seasons in which just Holy Trinity represented the town on the football field, a few people who had been involved with the two failed set-ups decided to form a new club, and Northwood United was launched for the 192627 campaign, with Leslie Faint, secretary of the previous Northwood FC, holding the same post for United. For the first two seasons, just friendly matches were played, apart from entering the Northwood Hospital Charity Cup, but after the second campaign, in which sixteen of the twenty-three games had been won, it was decided to join a league. Northwood United were elected to Division Two of the Harrow & District League for 192829, playing at Northwood Playing Fields, which was adjacent to Haste Hill golf course, at the end of The Drive, Northwood. In the team at

that time were young players Joe Gill, Bob Bell and Tom Bell, who would be with the club many years later, even returning after the Second World War, and the latter also became club secretary. After the Second World War, with the disappearance of Holy Trinity Northwood, the club dropped the “United” suffix from their title, and were Harrow & Wembley champions in consecutive years, 1948 and 1949. After being a mid-table side in the Premier Division throughout the ‘fifties, the club hit a slump in the early ‘sixties, suffering a firstever relegation in 1962, and they became something of a yo-yo side for a few years, but towards the end of the 1960s things improved. Northwood were elected into the Middlesex League in 1970, and they became runners-up at the end of their second season. After playing in the main park since 1931, the mid-seventies saw the Woods develop an area of rough land into their present ground with suitable facilities, and further developments have been carried out regularly since. Due to large travelling costs, Northwood switched to play in the London Spartan League in 1984 and they were soon to become one of the competition’s top clubs. After one League Cup win, a runners-up spot and two third places, the Woods completed a League and Cup double in 1992. Along with this success came considerable ground improvements, which allowed them to be promoted to the Isthmian League, Division Three.

NORthWOOd hIStORY After five years at the higher level, following early success by winning the 1993 Associate Members Trophy, and several promotion challenges, Northwood made it to Division Two in 1997. Following three seasons in that division, the Woods earned further promotion when they gained the runners-up spot in 2000. They also captured the Associate Members Trophy for a second time and reached their first ever Middlesex Senior Cup final, where they went down 2-0 to GM Vauxhall Conference outfit Hayes. Another three years later and Northwood found themselves in the Premier Division, having won the Division One North championship in 2003. They also captured the Isthmian League Cup for the first time in 2002, beating Premier Division Hampton & Richmond Borough in the final, 3-2 after extra-time, and also reached the Middlesex Senior Cup final once again, this time beaten in extra-time by Hendon. September 2002 saw the Woods defeat Premier Division champions Gravesend & Northfleet 4-2 to lift the Isthmian Charity Shield. It proved a difficult first season in the Premier Division, but after an F.A. restructure of non-League football, Northwood remained in the division for a second season. Northwood faced a new challenge for the 2005-06 campaign, having been moved to the Southern League Premier Division, and although the first season in the new league was a struggle, the team avoided the drop on the final day. However, 2007 saw the Woods finish in 22nd place in the division, and relegation followed – the first time the club had faced demotion in senior football. It wasn’t all doom and gloom, though, as Northwood lifted

the Middlesex Senior Cup for the first time in their history by defeating Hayes, of the Conference South, on their own ground in the final. Having been moved back to the Isthmian League for the 2007-08 campaign, and after spending three years in Division One North, Northwood were then transferred again to the Southern League Division One Central in 2010-11. The following season was boosted by an FA Cup run to the third qualifying round while a forced change of manager saw the Woods have to rebuild the squad so a mid-table finish was very acceptable. Mark Burgess had successful full seasons in charge, surpassing expectations by finishing ninth, tenth and then seventh respectively. There was also success in cup competitions, reaching the League Cup semi-final in 2016 before losing on penalties to Merthyr Town and then winning the Middlesex Senior Cup for the second time in the club’s history with a 2-0 victory over Ryman Premier side Enfield Town. However, 2016/17 was more of a struggle after losing most of the successful side to a higher level and relegation was only just avoided. The Club made a change in the summer of 2017 by appointing experienced coach and manager Simon Lane as their new boss but he abandoned the project in January 2018 and after a couple of caretaker roles and not much improvement, have now given Dean Barker the role for the new season of 2018/19.

RePORtING IN

bROMSGROve SPORtING 1-0 dUNStabLe tOWN For the third consecutive game the defence played like Trojans and restricted their opponents to just one goal, compared to the eighteen that were conceded in the first five league games of the season. There is a more compact and organised look and feel to the Team which is a testimony to the hard work that goes on behind the scenes twice a week in training sessions, and to all 11 players who go out and play for the Club week in, week out. The first 45 minutes were an evenly contested affair with plenty of clever play on display from both sides. Dunstable looked firm and solid at the back and dangerous on the break. Midfielder Alex Taylor was everywhere. Industrious, fearless, committed, skilful and passionate. Alex has all those attribute in his locker. Dunstable were indebted to Fred Burbidge in the 28th minute as he produced a great save to keep the scores even. But this was certainly not completely one way traffic, Dunstable came close themselves on a couple of occasions, with Arel Amu, again showing good link up play with Saul Williams and Daniel Trif. That figure so nearly rose to four, when in the opening minutes of the second half, a Dunstable corner from the right was met firmly by Kyle Lincoln, but his goal directed header was somehow scrambled off the line and Bromsgrove escaped with their goal intact and for the next few minutes fought from the ropes as Dunstable launched a series of probing attacks. Rio Dasilva had replaced ethan Lamptey at half time and proved to be a thorough nuisance to the Bromsgrove back line, as he danced his

way past defenders as if the ball was attached to his feet with a piece of string. The first 10 – 15 minutes of the second half produced some lovely football from Dunstable and had they gone ahead in that time, they would have been good value for their lead. However they could not find their way through a resolute Bromsgrove defence, who looked well organised and marshalled by skipper, Craig Jones. Bromsgrove’s goal was well worked and well taken, but Bromsgrove fans around me let out a few sighs of relief that a throw-in, in the lead up to the goal had been taken several yards further up the pitch than where the ball had originally gone out. Small margins again. Back came Dunstable straight at Bromsgrove, determined to seek parity and claim a justified and deserved point. Arel Amu got a shot away which drew a decent save from Reece Francis in the Bromsgrove goal. This followed some outstanding work by Joe Mead who plays with such calm and measured maturity for a young man still only 18 years old. Chris Wreh came on shortly after the Bromsgrove goal to replace Daniel Trif, who worked tirelessly all game, but got little reward or change from his defender. Still Dunstable plugged away, right to the final whistle, but the tight Bromsgrove defence held firm, and credit is due to the well disciplined and well organised style of football they play, which you have to feel will see them come, season end, in the top few places of the League.

tUI dO dIY at 61FC The Beds FA Football Development Officer Ciaran Alexander has been wokring in partnership with Luton Council’s Strategic Community Services team to come up with ways to engage volunteers with football clubs in the Luton Borough area. Having been impressed with the team’s ‘Wish List Project’ they approached various clubs in the area who expressed an interest in facility support to apply. Subsequently TUI were keen to lend a local hand to a local club to try and make a difference in the local community. Last week the team set about refurbishing the facility at 61FC and the results speak for themselves. 61FC is a local football club based in Luton

and is so named due to being formed in 1961. It is based in quite a deprived area, where youths have “time on their hands” and don’t also use their energy in the right way! Many times the football club has been the subject of minor vandalism & graffiti. All, in all, the club house & grounds were in need of some Tender Loving Care. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this scheme should contact Ciaran for support with your ‘Wish List’ application. Ciaran.Alexander@BedfordshireFA.com

deveLOPING ChaMPIONS

Some of our youth teams have been out and about thanking their sponsors this week. The Dunstable Town Under 9s Lions (above) would like to say a big thank you to tRG Logistics for sponsoring their tracksuits for the season and also Shire homecare for sponsoring the Lions new match day kit. Meanwhile, our Under 8s Pumas presented a bouquet of flowers to thank their new sponsor the Sandwich bar (dunstable) for supporting them and kitting them out in training wear and match day kit, before they were treated to pre match bacon rolls!

ON THIS DAY ...

by Brian Seal

13 October 2006 - FIFA, Fashion Police On 13 October 2006, FIFA announced its decision to dock Cameroon 6 points in their qualification campaigns for the 2010 World Cup and 2008 African Cup of Nations--all because the Indomitable Lions wore a unitard. Cameroon had a history of kit controversy after wearing sleeveless shirts at the 2002 African Cup of Nations. Afterward, FIFA told them they could not wear them at the 2002 World Cup, so Puma, Cameroon’s kit maker, added black sleeves for that tournament. For the ‘04 Cup of Nations, Puma provided Cameroon with a new kit. Although the shirt and shorts appeared to be separate, they were actually connected to form a one-piece. Cameroon wore the kit for the tournament’s first round, but FIFA told them afterward that they could not wear it for the later rounds. Cameroon, however, pleaded that it was too

difficult to obtain replacement kits on such short notice and wore the one-piece for their quarterfinal match against Nigeria on 8 February (Nigeria won, 2-1). After FIFA announced its long-awaited punishment, it eventually relented and rescinded the points penalties. Meanwhile, Puma took FIFA to court, arguing that the rules of the game did not require the shirt and shorts to be separate. They lost, too.

This month had a slightly different format as it was also an extra special celebration. Mind BLMK is celebrating its 40th Year so we also had balloons, cake and a raffle to ring in the celebrations! A big thank you to Chanel’s Hair and Beauty salon in Shortstown for donating a manicure voucher for the raffle. Your support is much appreciated. The afternoon was spent eating and chatting and the lovely sounds of laughter were heard often. The Soup ‘n’ Roll group meet on the third Monday of each month at Shortstown Village Hall between 12.30 and 2pm. ON the ROad WIth the bLUeS

A Bedford Town Football Club was in existence by 1884, although it changed its name to Bedford Association in 1887. As there were no leagues at the time, the club played friendly matches in cups, including the Kettering Charity Cup and the Luton Charity Cup, before disappearing in 1891. The name Bedford Town reappeared in 1894 when Swifts, a club founded in 1890, were renamed. They absorbed Bedford Rovers in 1896, and although local leagues had been formed, the club continued to play only cup matches and friendlies. However, the club disappeared around the turn of the century. On 31 July 1908 a new Bedford Town was formed at the Association Rooms on Harpur Street. They joined Division One of the Northamptonshire League, finishing bottom of the table in their first two seasons, but avoiding relegation to Division Two. They went on to finish as runners-up for three consecutive seasons between 1911–12 and 1913–

14 before the league closed down due to World War I. They also won the Northamptonshire Senior Cup in 1912–13. After the war the club continued in the league, finishing as Division One runners-up in 1929–30 before winning the title in 1930–31. The following season saw them finish in second place again, after which they won back-to-back titles in 1932–33 and 1933–34. The league was then renamed the United Counties League, with Bedford finishing as runners-up in 1934–35 and reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 3–2 at home to Dartford. They finished as runners-up in 1936– 37, remaining in the league until World War II. In 1945 Bedford joined the Southern League. They reached the first round of the FA Cup several times in the early 1950s, losing 2–0 at Swindon Town in 1951–52, 4–0 at Weymouth in 1953–54 and 2–0 at Dorchester Town in 1954–55. In 1955 they applied for election to the Football League after finishing eighteenth in the Southern League, but received no votes.

ON the ROad WIth the bLUeS The club are thought to have been founded in 1884, although the first evidence of their existence dates to 1887 when the Kempston Rovers rugby club played their first football match. At the rugby club’s AGM in 1891, it was decided to create a football team called Kempston Montrose. Three years later Kempston Montrose folded and its assets transferred to Kempston Association. An 1895 meeting saw another new team formed, Kempston Rovers. They gained the nickname “the Walnut boys” due to Kempston being well known for its walnuts. The club initially played in both the Bedford & District League and the Biggleswade & District League; they won the Bedford & District League in 1907–08 and 1908–09 and the Biggleswade & District League in 1910–11 and 1911–12. In 1927 they joined the Bedfordshire & District County League, which became the South Midlands League in 1929, where they remained until switching to Division Two of the United Counties League in 1953. They won the division in 1955–56, and the following season Division Two and One were

merged into one league in which Kempston finished runners-up. In 1957–58, the club were United Counties League champions. The league was split into two division again in 1961–62 and Kempston were placed in Division Two. Despite finishing tenth that season, they were promoted to Division One. In 1973, Division One was renamed the Premier Division and in 1974–75 Kempston were league champions again, also reaching the fifth round of the FA Vase. In 1978–79 Kempston reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, the furthest they have ever got in the competition. They repeated their record FA Vase run in 1980– 81, again reaching the fifth round. Rovers were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1982– 83 season, having finished bottom of the Premier Division, but were promoted again in 1985–86 after winning Division One.
