FROM THE BOARDROOM Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park this afternoon for the return fixture against todays opponents Oxhey Jets. Our first encounter saw the Jets snatch victory in the dying seconds and we will be keen to reverse that result today. We welcome the players, officials, and supporters of Oxhey Jets with keen anticipation. It was great to get back to winning ways at Crawley Green on Tuesday night. An excellent ‘all team’ performance deservedly resulting in 3 valuable points. I was asked several times after the game to name my ‘man of the match’, and to be honest kept changing my mind as there was not one player who didn’t give everything. Given that Crawley play on the 3G every other week, it was none the less gratifying to see our boys knocking the ball around with style, skill and admirable technique. More of that today please! Today we will be acknowledging 100 up for Mr Versatility Daniel Trif. We have shared with Daniel many happy and very sad moments over the last 3 seasons. In the face of great personal adversity he has never failed to give 100%. Ask him to do a job and he just gets on with it. We are privileged to have him playing for the Blues. Here’s to the next 100 Daniel! Many of you will have caught up with the news that our former defender Peter Kioso has signed for the Hatters after a very successful spell at Hartlepool United. When he was released from MK Dons many of us were puzzled as to why this talented
young footballer was deemed surplus to requirements. He has proved that with determination and no little skill that there is a way back into the professional game. For us to have played a significant part in his development under the guidance of Tony McCool and Gareth is gratifying and makes us proud. Well done Peter and welcome back down south. In these, my first programme notes of 2020, can I repeat what I said in my last missive at the end of 2019? I encourage you to keep supporting the team Bring a friend, or friends for that matter. Be positively vocal, respect those around you with your choice of language. Appreciate that the match officials are human, and like you and I, will make mistakes, and make your observations humorous rather than personal. Enjoy the game, thank you for your ongoing support, and here’s to hopefully three more points.
Neil
GAFFER’S NOTES Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Creasey Park, especially the management, staff, players and supporters of Oxhey Jets. I hope you have a pleasant afternoon with us and a safe journey home. Our previous game back in September was an exciting encounter, where 2 penalties to the Jets settled a tight and competitive match. I write these notes fresh off the back of our 2-1 victory away at Crawley Green on Tuesday evening. A pleasing result that reflected an equally pleasing performance. It has felt lately that these 2 outcomes have not really played out the same way in recent matches. However with all the hard work going on behind the scenes and on the training ground, there is a growing belief and confidence in the group that we can enter the second half of the season a little taller, finish the season strongly and take this into next season. Today we also celebrate the 100th match for Daniel Trif. What a truly amazing man he is! I remember the day I met him for the first time. On a boiling hot day at Creasey Park during the first open trials session, when the club had no players, no equipment, a brand new boardroom, Tony McCool has just been appointed and we had only a few weeks until the start of the season. Daniel was one of 80 players that turned up that day. His relentless energy and enthusiasm made it impossible for Tony and I to overlook him. 2 1/2 years later and here he is with 100
matches! On a personal note also, he has been through so much for such a young man and I would like to think that football and the club helped him through this time. Lastly, I would have to say that his winning goal, away to Biggleswade, that gave us all hope of avoiding relegation in his first season will be a wonderful memory that will be with me forever! Well done Daniel and here is to another 100! This week also sees some wonderful news about a player from the 2017/18 season. Peter Kioso’s move to Luton Town is another reason for the club to celebrate. I think anyone who saw him play at Creasey Park and at Hartlepool will know what a fantastic addition he will be at Kenilworth Road. His attitude, ability and tenacity was second to none. I am sure that Tony and the club can feel very proud of their contributions in Peter’s pathway, that I’m sure will go from Luton to beyond. Well done Peter and I hope you will come and visit us again someday. Back to today. The lads are ready to work hard and are determined to show another positive performance to get a result to end a good week for the club. I hope that you all enjoy the game and that you keep clapping cheering and singing!

LOCAL NON-LEAGUE CHAT with Ollie Bayliss
This week Milton Keynes was awarded the European City of Sport. Other than the fact it’s technically a town, it’s hard to disagree that the title is deserved. MK contributes greatly to sports like ice hockey, badminton, F1, athletics, darts and table tennis. However, the town’s non-league scene is staggeringly lacking. Aside from Newport Pagnell Town, there are no clubs above the 6th step of non-league. As a ‘New City’ with a young population, it means generations of talented lower league players either travel elsewhere to play football, or more likely, give up the game for good. Of course, the town has a good football league side in MK Dons, but there will always be those that are reluctant to support the League One side due to the way the club moved to the town. Milton Keynes has a population significantly larger than towns like Oxford, Wycombe or Watford. All of those are capable of supporting several non-league clubs as well as a professional club, so why not Milton Keynes? The town has had some notable names in the past: MK City, Bletchley Town, Milton Keynes City, Wolverton AFC & Stony Stratford Town may well ring a bell with non-league fans. However, all have either folded or dropped out of the National League system. The usual combination of a lack of funding and facilities were the reason for their sad decline. Yet there is some cause for optimism for the future. Several grassroots clubs are trying
to fill the void and rise quickly through the pyramid. MK Robins is an interesting example. Not unlike Mk Dons, the club was moved into the town from elsewhere. In 2012 the historic Buckingham Town was relocated to Manor Fields in Milton Keynes. Last January they were renamed MK Robins to try and galvanise support and sponsorship from the local area. The club plays in the Spartan Division 1 and is now the biggest club representing the town below the football league. There’s a number of MK based clubs playing a step lower in the Spartan Division 2 too. Old Bradwell United, New Bradwell St Peter, Unite MK, and the excellently named MK Gallacticos are among those from the town. This week on the Non-League Show I spoke to David Keene from Old Bradwell United. His side is the lead contenders to win the division, but their facilities at Abbey Road aren’t good enough for them to progress up the ladder. The pitch is essentially a public park and they also lack the floodlights needed to play Step 6 football. Therein lays the main ceiling for most clubs in the town. A lack of facilities, pitches, and grounds able to support better non-league football is holding the area back. Hopefully, the European City of Sport title will bring with it some much added attention and finances. With a quarter of a million people living in the area, hopefully, more will get the chance to enjoy non-league football in the coming years.
OXHEY JETS HISTORY General Manager John Elliott founded Oxhey Jets in 1972. In the 1978-79 season the team having out grown youth football moved to the Watford and District men’s Saturday league, and at the first attempt won the Division one championship without dropping a point, this prompted an application to the Hertfordshire Senior County League, which was turned down because their home ground was an open playing fields. They instead went into the West Herts Saturday league, and started to prepare the old school pitch at the Chilwell Gardens site ready for another application to join the County League. The Biggest change to happen to the club was in the 2000-2001 season having moved from their old Chilwell Gardens site, to a new Two million pound complex in Altham Way (using Met Police Bushey for a season), Jets new ground; “The Boundary Stadium” was built to almost Rymans League standard. While the ground was being built, the First team secured there highest ever Honour, Premier Division Champions of the Hertfordshire Senior County League, and the reserves finished Champions as well. This was to be the start of the best run the club, and County had ever seen. The following season the first team retained the Championship, while becoming the first team to add the prestigiothem Aubrey cup and the Hertfordshire Senior Charity County Cup in the same season. 2003-04 started with only one aim, promotion to the Minerva South Midlands league, with all the ground improvements complete, the team needed to do the job
one more time, as this time the application for the much earn promotion would be made. This aim has been achieved as the First team secured a top two place. They also won the Rickmansworth charity cup again and were Winners of the Highly Prestigiothem St Mary’s Cup. 2004-05 Season was beyond anybodies dream in the club, the first team winning a treble trophy season. The Minerva Division one Championship was won at the first attempt, winning the division by seven points clear, this was added to the Hertfordshire Centenary Trophy that had been won at The Letchworth County ground in April, beating Hatfield Town 2-0. The triple was sealed in the last game of the season, beating Tring Athletic in the Minerva Floodlight cup final on penalties after a 0-0aet game. The 2005-06 season, their first in the premier division, saw them finish in 13th place. They entered the FA Cup for the first time and reached the semi-final of the Herts FA Senior Challenge Cup where they lost to Bishop’s Stortford in extra time. Their path to the semi-final gave them their first ever fixture against football league opposition when they met Barnet at home. The 2006-07 season was without doubt the Clubs best ever season, finishing 7th in the Premier Division and reaching the Premier Division cup final where they lost to Edgware Town by the only goal of a closely fought cup tie. The highlight of the season was in the FA Cup when they visited AFC Wimbledon in the second qualifying
OXHEY JETS HISTORY round, where despite defeat they all spent an unforgettable day. In the FA Vase they reached the third round proper where they lost at Ipswich Wanderers. Their giant killing act continued in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup when they defeated St. Albans City by 4 goals to 1 before losing, in the next round, to Borehamwood in extra time, after drawing 1 – 1 at the end of normal time. The 2012-13 season was the clubs most successful league season. Due to the worst weather for many years they finished the last few weeks of the season playing 3 matches each week and the runnersup spot was lost on the last day of the season. They finished in 3rd position behind Aylesbury United and Dunstable Town, who completed the season without losing a league fixture. They retained the Herts FA Charity Shield defeating Hertford Town 4 – 0 in the final, and the last match of the season in mid May saw them beat Cockfosters to win the South Midlands Floodlight Cup. The start of the 2013-14 season was a difficult one for the Club as they found out that all except three of last season’s team had decided to move to other clubs. With just two weeks to kick off Wayne Gladdy was appointed as manager to try and put a team together. At the end of January with just 20 points gained, Wayne started to recruit new players and from then on they only lost one league match which secured their status for the new season, which under the circumstances was a fantastic achievement. They also reached the final of the St Mary’s Cup where they beat Leverstock Green 3 – 2.
The 2014-15 season saw them continue building for the future under their manager Wayne Gladdy and they finished mid table in 12th position with 57 points. After two managerial changes at the start of the 2015-16 campaign they found themselves in a relegation battle during the second half of the season. Bob Wyatt took over the reins and following many new signings a more settled side was found for the last two months and a 17th position was achieved. The 2016-17 season saw them continue the rebuilding process under manager Lee Stedman and a 15th position with a points total of 49 was achieved. Their final run in saw them lose just one of their last eight league fixtures and they were awarded team of the month for April. The 2017 – 18 season saw them struggling to achieve a mid -table finish and with just a few matches left to play they were in a relegation position. With the help of new managers Tim O’Sullivan and Pat Fallon they won their last two fixtures and secured their premier division status. Their managers Tim O’Sullivan and Pat Fallon in the 2018-19 season took them to 9th position in the league which was their highest finish since 2013. The last match of the season saw them in the final of the West Herts FA St. Mary’s Cup where they narrowly lost by the only goal of the game to Berkhamsted. The rebuilding continues.

REPORTING IN
OUR ROVING REPORTER PATRICK MACKAY’S ACCOUNT OF OUR RECENT MATCH AGAINST CRAWLEY GREEN A Chris Stapleton brace on a chilly night at the Brache ensured Dunstable Town’s dominant performance was justly rewarded. Stapleton, along with Luke Little, looked industrious and dangerous from the first whistle, but the first clear opportunity fell to Crawley Green, with Dan Gould producing a decent save with his feet to deny. When a Crawley Green defender sent a weak header back in the direction of his goalkeeper Louie Lobjoit, Little’s sharpness was again causing issues as he was able to latch onto the errant pass, but with the angle tightening fast, Lobjoit was able to keep the scores level. Halfway into the first period, a pacy free kick was delivered into the Green box, and when Eric Ameyaw was adjudged to have been pushed, Dunstable were given the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot. Stapleton was on hand to coolly despatch into the bottom corner. Minutes later, Stapleton was shaping to shoot from inside the box when he was crudely barged to the ground by the last man, allowing Lobjoit to gather the ball. The clearest penalty you could ever wish to see, inexplicably denied. Crawley Green reminded Dunstable how slender a one-nil lead is when Alex Marius showed fantastic technique to send a volley thundering off the crossbar from outside the box. A strong start to the second half saw Luke Little get on the end of a perfect through-ball, and with the better option perhaps being to shoot, he tried to slip the ball across to Stapleton, but saw his pass cut out by the defender.
Little’s endeavours would soon see him put the ball in the back of the net, but with the luxury of a two goal advantage on the line, the flag was raised for offside. After Gould had parried a free-kick away, a volley straight back goal wards was tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner, Crawley Green came a hair’s breadth from levelling when a header was cleared off the line. With just under twenty minutes left to play, Stapleton nodded home a pinpoint Adam Sawyer cross, and the roar from the Dunstable faithful was enough to drown out the departing aircraft overhead. Phil Draycott ensured a nervy final ten minutes for the Blues when he converted from a tight angle on the right to halve the deficit for Crawley Green. Town were able to keep control of the game though, with Joe Hankins impressing after replacing Luke Little midway through the second half, and the Blues showed professionalism to hold onto the lead and boost confidence ahead of Saturday’s visit from Oxhey Jets to Creasey Park.

TRIF HITS A CENTURY I’m not sure if there is a position that Daniel Trif hasn’t played in for the Blues since his arrival from London Tigers FC in the summer of 2017. He’s played at the back, in midfield, up front and even in goal on a couple of occasions. He is Mr Versatility. But that doesn’t even begin to tell you what you need to know about Daniel Trif the man. A Romanian national with an everpresent smile and a heart as big as they come. Daniel has the love and respect of everyone at the Club, not just for his unquestionable commitment and loyalty on the field but also for the courage and strength he showed in the dark days of the winter of 2017 and the spring of 2018. The loss of Ella was felt by everyone associated with the Club. The Ella Trif Memorial Golf Day held at Luton Hoo showed how much love and support there was for Daniel with Kings Langley FC, Berkhamsted FC & QPR well represented among the 60 odd competitors. Daniel’s goal away at Biggleswade Town in April 2018 captured his determination perfectly. Chasing what appeared to be a ball destined for the safety of the Biggleswade keeper, Daniel kept going and gratefully capitalised on the keeper’s hesitation to give the Blues all three points. But it was Daniel’s reaction which enthralled everyone. He sprinted to the dug- out and leapt into the arms of the management team and substitutes. This was unbridled passion and emotion from a man who was experiencing unimaginable
pain on the inside. We all knew who that goal was for and what it meant to Daniel. Who said football is just a game? Daniel plays his 101st game today for the Blues v Oxhey Jets. His century came up on Tuesday night away at Crawley Green. He is sponsored this season by the Regiment who will pay their own tribute to him. Daniel is the sole survivor in the current 1st team playing squad of the Southern League Prem days. He is a humble man with the strength and heart of a lion and whose remarkable story, dedication & loyalty make him a true Dunstable Town FC hero and legend. Thank you Daniel for everything that you have given and done for this Club.

DUNSTABLE TOWN’S YOUNG GUNS
ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE DUNSTABLE TOWN YOUTH TEAMS AND COMMITTEE As the youth section under 18s folded due to not enough interest and not being able to field a team, which sadly happens at this age, it was good to hear Godlove Oppong has made the jump to the Development team. It’s extra special because he is only 16 years old, so we would like to thank the youth coaches that helped him up until now, Wayne Upton, Cameron Jenkins and Tyler Dunnell. He has made two appearances so far, which is fantastic. We look forward to seeing Godlove progress under Colin Lauder, Valentino Qoku and Samir Amadu.

25 JANUARY 1995 - CANTONA WAS KUNG-FU FIGHTING On 25 January 1995, Manchester United drew 1-1 with hosts Crystal Palace in a match that proved to be very costly for United and their star French forward, Eric Cantona. Since arriving at Old Trafford from Leeds in November 1992, Cantona had become a United favorite, helping them to the League title in his first two seasons, as well as being named the 1994 PFA Footballer of the Year. Unfortunately, he had also displayed a quick temper, once receiving two red cards in two successive matches. In that match against Palace, both teams were scoreless early in the second half when Cantona was sent off in the 48th minute for kicking Palace defender Richard Shaw. As he was being escorted off the pitch, he suddenly turned and launched himself feet-first over the advertising hoardings into Palace supporter
Matthew Simmons, who had been heaping verbal abuse on the Frenchman. Down to 10 men, United managed to take a 1-0 lead six minutes later, but could not prevent Palace from equalizing in the 79th minute to earn the draw. Cantona was suspended for the rest of the season, sentenced to 120 hours of community service, and fined ÂŁ10,000. Without him, United fell just short of winning another title, finishing one point behind League champions Blackburn Rovers. For his part in the altercation, Simmons was jailed for 24 hours, fined ÂŁ500, and given a one-year ban from all football grounds in England and Wales.
