inside the boardroom Before kick-off we will be holding a minute’s silence to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of former Jets player, Private Tom Lake A very warm welcome to all the Committee, supporters and coaching and playing staff of Oxhey Jets for this afternoon’s SSML Premier Division match. We hope you all enjoy your afternoon at Creasey Park and return home safely after the final whistle has blown. Before kick-off we will be holding a minute’s silence to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Private Tom Lake from the 1st Batallion the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment who died in Afghanistan on active service aged 29. Lest We Forget. The game against New Salamis gave Joe & Kyle a good idea of where the Team are at present. Despite losing by the odd goal in three, the Team showed plenty of spirit and determination and speaking after the game to some of the New Salamis committee and players they were complimentary about our performance and knew they’d been in a closely contested performance. A few days later the Ampthill Town jinx struck again as we contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The same thankfully could not be said last Saturday where goals on their debuts from Kyle Faulkner (2) and Charlie Ogle and Liam & Terrence put some smiles on the faces of the 40 or so Dunstable fans who braved the traffic jams on the North Orbital to see the lads win 5 -2. The last time we won 5 – 2 was ironically against today’s opponents on the 25th January 2020 in front of just 69 spectators. Matt set himself the target of raising home attendances to an average of 150 for this season. We’re currently on 166 so today will

be another good test of where the Team are in terms of playing against another team in good form and where we as a Club are in our first season as a Community Benefit Society in terms of increasing attendances. The Walking Group is taking a break for the Winter but will be back in the New Year when the evenings are lighter. Our thanks to Patrick Mackay who organized it for us and to all those who participated in the weekly sessions. The Walking Football group has booked a couple of additional training sessions before they play a friendly v Luton Town’s Walking Football team. Open to everyone sessions are free to join and take place every Wednesday at Creasey Park at 11am. Our Monday Friendship group at The Glider remains popular and we are looking to work with local Social Prescribers to offer a further group to support lonely and socially isolated people. Finally, I wanted to ask you all to get behind the Regiment’s sponsored walk to the away match at Harpenden Town on Saturday 27th November. Leaving Creasey Park they’ll walk the 12 miles to Rothamsted Park for the match helping to raise funds for the Blues 4 – 5K L&D Hospital campaign. If you’ve not already sponsored Scottie, Ian, Aaron, Dean, Peter and colleagues please do so. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dtfc See you all on Tuesday when Holmer Green are our visitors. Thanks, as always for your incredible support. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Oxhey Jets - 3

from the bench Oxhey Jets come into the game on the back of some impressive results most recently a 1-0 victory over New Salamis Welcome to the management, players, committee members and all from Oxhey Jets for this afternoon’s clash. There will be a minute’s silence before the game as a mark of respect to Private Thomas Lake. Private Lake was a 29-year-old soldier from Watford who sadly lost his life in Afghanistan. The sacrifice Private Lake and so many others have made representing our country is deeply humbling and I am sure you will join us all in the silence and tribute to Private Lake.

Charlie Ogle is our 3rd addition from Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. Charlie came onto our radar having made 1 goal and scored against us last month. I was really pleased to see him score a goal for us on Saturday on his debut! Our 4th addition is full back Brodie Couzins. Brodie is socially outstanding within the group, a great communicator and someone I have known for several years. Tenacious, reads the game well and has already made a strong impact in the group in his short time.

It was a great feeling to get the win last week at London Colney. On an extremely difficult pitch we turned in a very good display that resulted in an excellent 5-2 win on the road. The atmosphere in the dressing room before, during and after the game was brilliant led by our new club captain Jamie Nicholls.

Last but certainly not least is the addition of Dan Naylor. Dan has been captain at Kempston Rovers recently even at the young age of 20 years old. He is well known to me, and Kyle having worked with him at Mundi Genus Football Academy for the past 7 months and we’re delighted to have him on board with us.

We have had a busy last couple of weeks regarding recruitment and have been delighted with the new additions. Jamie Nicholls has come in and been appointed our new captain and brings a wealth of experience to the dressing room. His influence has been immediate, and I have no doubts the Dunstable fans will continue to enjoy watching him play after his man of the match performance last Saturday.

We realise that one positive result doesn’t define our season, there is a long way to go, and it is imperative that we back up last week’s results with more results starting today. There are 66 points to play for so a lot of football ahead. We want to ensure we get ourselves away from danger as quickly as possible and begin climbing the table. I ask 2 things, firstly that the players give absolutely everything and secondly for all supporters to support the group and their efforts week in week out. Last week’s support at London Colney was excellent and thoroughly appreciated by us all. We may not have the biggest fan base in the country but what I have found already in my short time is we certainly have a fanatical one.

Along with Jamie I was delighted to welcome Kyle Faulkner to the team from Buckingham Athletic. We worked hard to get Kyle over the line and with his 2 goals last week has already begun to strike up a strong partnership with Joe Sellers-West. We have good competition at the front end of the pitch now with Jimmy Hartley and Kelvin Osei-Addo vying for places with Joe and Kyle.

Enjoy today’s game and I hope to see some more smiling faces at 5pm today. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Oxhey Jets - 5

H

L

L In the 1978-79 season the team having outgrown youth football moved to the Watford and District men’s Saturday league, and at the first attempt won the Division one championship without dropping a point, this prompted an application to the Hertfordshire Senior County League, which was turned down because their home ground was an open playing fields. They instead went into the West Herts Saturday league and started to prepare the old school pitch at the Chilwell Gardens site ready for another application to join the County League. The Biggest change to happen to the club was in the 2000-2001 season having moved from their old Chilwell Gardens site to a new Twomillion-pound complex in Altham Way (using Met Police Bushey for a season), Jets new ground; “The Boundary Stadium” was built to almost Rymans League standard. While the ground was being built, the First team secured there highest ever Honour, Premier

Division Champions of the Hertfordshire Senior County League, and the reserves finished Champions as well. This was to be the start of the best run the club, and County had ever seen. The following season the first team retained the Championship, while becoming the first team to add the prestigious Aubrey Cup and the Hertfordshire Senior Charity County Cup in the same season.

L

2003-04 started with only one aim, promotion to the Minerva South Midlands league, with all the ground improvements complete, the team needed to do the job one more time, as this time the application for the much earn promotion would be made. This aim has been achieved as the First team secured a top two place. They also won the Rickmansworth charity cup again and were winners of the St Mary’s Cup.

B

2004-05 Season was beyond anybody’s dream in the club, the first team winning a treble trophy season. The Minerva Division One

Championship was won at the first attempt, winning the division by seven points, this was added to the Hertfordshire Centenary Trophy that had been won at The Letchworth County ground in April, beating Hatfield Town 2-0. The triple was sealed in the last game of the season, beating Tring Athletic in the Minerva Floodlight Cup Final on penalties after a 0-0aet game. The 2005-06 season, their first in the Premier Division, saw them finish in 13th place. They entered the FA Cup for the first time and reached the semi-final of the Herts FA Senior Challenge Cup where they lost to Bishop’s Stortford in extra time. Their path to the semi-final gave them their first ever fixture against football league opposition when they met Barnet. The 2006-07 season was without doubt the Clubs best season, finishing 7th in the Premier Division and reaching the Premier Division Cup Final where they lost to Edgware Town. The highlight of the season was in the FA Cup when they visited AFC Wimbledon in the second qualifying round, where despite defeat, they all spent an unforgettable day. In the FA Vase they reached the third round proper where they lost at Ipswich Wanderers. Their giant killing act continued in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup when they defeated St. Albans City by 4 goals to 1 before losing, in the next round, to Borehamwood. The 2012-13 season was the clubs most successful league season. Due to the worst weather for many years, they finished the last few weeks of the season playing 3 matches each week and the runner up spot was lost on the last day of the season. They finished in 3rd position behind Aylesbury United and Dunstable Town, who completed the season without losing a league fixture. The start of the 2013-14 season was a difficult one for the Club as they found out that all except three of last season’s team had decided to move to other clubs. With just two weeks to kick off Wayne Gladdy was appointed as manager to try and put a team together. At the end of January with just 20 points gained, Wayne started to recruit new players and from then on, they only lost one league match 8 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Oxhey Jets

oxhey-jets-print.indd 8

which secured their status for the new season, which under the circumstances was a fantastic achievement. They also reached the final of the St Mary’s Cup where they beat Leverstock Green 3 – 2. The 2014-15 season saw them continue building for the future under their manager Wayne Gladdy and they finished mid table in 12th position with 57 points. After two managerial changes at the start of the 2015-16 campaign they found themselves in a relegation battle during the second half of the season. Bob Wyatt took over the reins and following many new signings a more settled side was found and a 17th position was achieved. The 2016-17 season saw them continue the rebuilding process under Lee Stedman and a 15th position with a points total of 49 was achieved. Their final run-in saw them lose just one of their last eight league fixtures and they were awarded team of the month for April. The 2017 – 18 season saw them strugge to achieve a mid-table finish and with just a few matches left were in a relegation position. With the help of new managers Tim O’Sullivan and Pat Fallon they won their last two fixtures and secured their Premier Division status. Their managers Tim O’Sullivan and Pat Fallon in the 2018-19 season took them to 9th position in the league which was their highest finish since 2013. The last match of the season saw them in the final of the West Herts FA St. Mary’s Cup where they lost to Berkhamsted. The 2019 – 20 season saw Stuart Atkins appointed as first team manger following the retirement from football management of Tim and Pat. The season was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic and was curtailed after March 7th with Jets in 5th position after the 29 matches played. The start of the 2020 -21 season was delayed due to the pandemic. Matches started during mid -September and they only managed to complete 12 league matches when lockdown was introduced, and the league was once again curtailed. At that stage they were in 2nd position with 25 points.

Today we will be observing a minutes silence to mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of

Private Thomas Christopher Lake Lieutenant Colonel James Coote, Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, said: Private Tom Lake epitomised the very best qualities of the British infantryman; he was a true Tiger - ever professional and totally committed to his mates and his battalion, he had an irrepressible smile and an understated manner that together made him hugely respected by all those that had the privilege to serve with him. Corporal Jonathan St Paul, Section Commander, 4 Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, said:

Private Lake was taking part in a patrol to reassure the local population in the Jamal Kowi area of the Nahr-e Saraj district of central Helmand when he was caught in an explosion. He was airlifted to the field hospital at Camp Bastion where he was declared killed in action. Private Lake, aged 29, from Watford, joined the Army in November 2009 and passed out of training in May 2010, joining 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (1 PWRR), known as The Tigers, in Germany shortly afterwards. Upon joining the battalion he attended a number of courses - most notably the Infantry Assault Pioneers’ Course and the Team Medics’ Course, and he recently completed part one of the arduous Snipers’ Course in Brecon, Wales. He joined B Company and deployed to Canada with 4 Platoon in July 2010, and he stayed with that platoon for the rest of his training and subsequent deployment to Afghanistan. While new to the battalion, he was quickly recognised as an extremely competent and reliable soldier by his peers and his chain of command. Fit and confident, he demonstrated the ability to take on all manner of tasks and succeed.

oxhey-jets-print.indd 9

He was funny and always came out with some cracking banter and jokes. He was bright and cheery and morale was high with Tom around. He loved a brew and was always punching them back - the kettle was always on and water boiling with Tom. He had a talent for ping pong and was hard to beat. Playing him was a great laugh; I had a right crack but never managed to win! Tom will be dearly missed by me and the company. Private Zachary Myers, 4 Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, said: I don’t wish to sound clichéd, but Tom was a top bloke. He always had a smile and a joke at the ready. If anybody needed to do something he would lend a hand. In the checkpoint he helped us waterproof our beds, built a shelter over the kitchen and was a great general handyman. He lived life to the full, be it riding his motorbike, sky diving or waterskiing. Anything he could try, he would. Tom was always putting other people before himself. He always made the brews. He would always organise stuff for us to do. The night before we flew out he ordered us a curry and we all sat in my room and ate a last meal together. Tom was a great bloke and I’m glad to call him my friend. He will be sorely missed. DUNSTABLE TOWN v Oxhey Jets - 9

MATCH REPORT saturday 13 november London Colney 2-5 Dunstable Town It took the home side six minutes to open the scoring, when Dan Gould could only push a shot from the edge of the box into the path of a London Colney attacker, who couldn’t fail to give his side the lead. Dunstable came to life after going behind, and despite playing on a surface that presumably had cabbages and potatoes inches beneath the players feet, started playing some neat football. Dunstable Town stalwart Dan Trif was instrumental in the build-up for the equaliser, intercepting a short pass in the middle of the park before his cross was headed down by Joe Sellers-West into Faulkner’s path. The defender managed to block the resulting shot, unfortunately for him, with his hands. Faulkner stepped up and slotted home to score a debut goal and restore parity. Barely two minutes later and the Blues took the lead, with Faulkner, flicking the ball over the head of the defender in a distinctly Gascoigneesque manner, before seeing his shot deflected wide for a corner. Liam McCrohan was at the back post to meet the corner and give Town a deserved lead, and as with Faulkner before him, it was his first goal for the club. Outnumbering the home fans by quite a margin, the travelling Dunstable fans didn’t have to wait long before the margin on the score line was also widened. With thirty-six minutes played, Trif and Sellers-West again linked up well, with the latter playing Terence Muchineripi in down the left, and his shot was inch perfect into the bottom corner. A fine way to score your first goal for Dunstable Town. The away side were not in a merciful mood, and there were chances for more before half

time, the Colney goalkeeper fumbling a shot before recovering on the goal line, and then a Kwazim Theodore overhead kick headed off the line the most notable examples. The home goalkeeper had a difficult game but made a brace of fine saves early in the second half from free kicks. These saves could have proved important when Town allowed Colney back into the game, conceding a headed goal with twenty-five minutes left to play. London Colney exerted pressure for a spell, and threatened an equaliser on a couple of occasions, most notably a chipped cross/shot which rebounded off the upright before hitting Dan Gould on its way out for a corner. Almost a month ago to the day, Charlie Ogle was scoring the winner against Dunstable Town for Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, but today, having signed for the Blues, he was on hand to score his first goal for the club, which was apparently the theme for the day. When Brodie Couzins won possession in the middle of the park, he played it to Faulkner, who drove at the defence before turning and centering for Ogle, whose shot was flapped into the net by the dismayed goalkeeper. With little over ten minutes to play, this looked to be the breathing space Dunstable needed. Two minutes later Faulkner got his second of the game. Good work from Sellers-West and Dylan Baker, coupled with the London Colney backline failing to clear, allowed Baker to lay the ball to Faulkner from the by-line to side-foot home, putting the cherry on top. dunstable town under 12s phoenix team earning praise At the last home game, it was great to see John Sanders and his talented under 7s, who were the clubs’ guests for the day and the boys walked out as mascots. Thanks to John and his parents for the support. Today we welcome our under 12s Phoenix team and their managers Wayne Upton and Lukasz Adamczyk, and they will be our mascots for today’s game. The team have been in excellent form over the last two weeks beating top of the league Dunstable Town Youth 2-0 and second placed at the time Luton Allstars 5-1 which lifted the team to second in the league. Also, over the last month the team have had a great report from a ref congratulating them on how they conduct themselves on the pitch and he said they were a pleasure to ref. Wayne recently had an email from an opposition parent stating the same and how respectful they are. So, from everyone at the club, well done to the 12s keep making the club proud. Lastly the boys would like to thank long term sponsor High Flying food for providing the new kit.

in footbal history..

20 November 2004 - The Return Of Socrates On 20 November 2004, legendary midfielder and former Brazil captain Socrates returned to the pitch for the first time in 15 years, making a solitary appearance for English non-league side Garforth Town. Embodying a combination of strength and flair, Socrates began his professional career in 1974 with Botafogo, but spent the majority of it with Corinthians, scoring 172 goals in 297 appearances between 1978 and 1984. He also played for Fiorentina, Flamengo, and Santos before returning to Botafogo for his final season in 1989. Along the way, he earned 60 caps for Brazil and captained them in the 1982 World Cup. After his initial retirement from football, Socrates became a print and television commentator on sports and politics.

His unusual appearance for the Northern Counties East League First Division side Garforth Town was orchestrated by Town owner Simon Clifford, who used the publicity to promote his stable of Brazilian-style soccer academies. In the 78th minute, with Garforth and visitors Tadcaster Albion level at 2-2, Socrates, then 50 years old, stripped off his layers of protective clothing and entered the match. With his first touch, he took a powerful dipping shot from 25 yards forcing a save from the Tadcaster keeper. But that was his only real contribution to the match, which ended at 2-2. Afterward, he said “It was much faster than the type of football I’m used to. It was a lot more competitive and keenly fought but I really enjoyed it and it was an interesting experience.”
