FROM the boardroom Good afternoon and welcome to Creasey Park this afternoon. We welcome the players, officials and supporters of Peterborough Sports. We met in December and it was an exciting 1-1 game in atrocious conditions. Peterborough are the form team in the league and we look forward to standing toe to toe with them. Who would have predicted 4 weeks ago that we would have deservedly earned 7 points (very nearly 9!) out of 9 against three teams all looking to progress through this division? At the same time we have had to respond to a number of approaches for our players. This week Bromsgrove Sporting signed Kyle Lincoln from us, on the back of a couple of very accomplished performances from Kyle. We will miss his calm assuredness, but wish him every success. In the same way as with Arel two weeks ago, Kyle’s departure gives the opportunity for other players to step up. Against Corby this was illustrated as the back four held firm against a late Corby onslaught. There is a real unity and steely determination added to our undoubted technique and pace on the break. The more knowledgeable amongst the Corby support acknowledged our deserved victory as we enjoyed two of the best finishes from Daniel and Chris that you will see this season. It was also good to welcome Davide Pobbe to the club, and his work rate against Corby showed his commitment to the cause.
The second half introduction of Ehban Nancarrow-Martin also reinforced our commitment to development and pathway. There is much to be very positive about as Gareth, Colin and the team continue to move us on and up the league. Our Quiz Night on 2nd February was attended by 80 people and it seems that all who attended really enjoyed the evening. Our thanks go to James and the Creasey Park team for all their help in putting this event on. We will be doing this again in the coming months, as this sort of event builds community, extends our reach, and raises much need funds. We continue to work with prospective partners and are hopeful of adding a couple of new sponsors in the next couple of weeks. Finally, and as always, let’s get behind Gareth and the team today. Never underestimate the impact of your vocal support on our young team.
Enjoy the m atch Neil

PeteRbOROUGh SPORtS hIStORY Peterborough Sports football club was founded in 1908 and were initially known as Brotherhoods Engineering Works a noncompetitive factory side for the company that was founded by Peter Brotherhood in 1867 that was famed for designing and manufacturing the first steam turbine engine in the world. The club honours its heritage to this day with the turbine engine featuring in the club badge and “The Turbines” as the club nickname. We were called Bearings Direct in the 1990’s and then changed to Peterborough Sports all at the same Lincoln Road ground which underwent a major revamp in 2012/13, with a ground fit for Step 3 the ultimate aim. The club started competitive life in the Northants League in 1919 (which became the UCL in 1934) winning the title in that first season before joining the Peterborough League in 1923. The club once entertained Tottenham Hotspur at Lincoln Road before the 2nd World War in front of a crowd of 4,000 at a time when a stand went down the whole length of the ground and drew over 3,000 for the visit of local rivals Peterborough & Fletton United (now Peterborough United). Without doubt the clubs most famous player is Victor Watson (pictured) who played in the Northants League title winning team of 1919/20 before moving onto West Ham United for £50 via Wellingborough in March 1920. He remains the Hammers record goal scorer with 326 goals from 505 appearances.
Watson played five times for England scoring four times between 1923 & 1930 including a brace against Scotland in 1930 and played in the first FA Cup Final at Wembley in front of 200,000 fans v Bolton Much of the clubs early years were notably unsuccessful. The Northants League win in 1920 was followed 6 years later with a Peterborough League Division 3 title in 1926, with a gap then to the Peterborough Football Association Minor Cup win in 1940. The barren spell of success continued right up until 1976 when the Peterborough Division 3 title was secured again, which was repeated in 1981. The club enjoyed a brief golden period at the start of the 1990’s with promotion secured back to the Peterborough Premier Division and 2 Northants Lower Junior Cups being landed in 1994 & 1995 under the management of current Managing Director Stephen “Tommy” Cooper The club again had some barren time before the Turbines suddenly became successful in the 2006/07 season when both the Peterborough Premier Division and Northants Junior Cup were secured for the first time in the clubs history under the management of Al Lenihan & Tommy Flynn. Unfortunately the club did not follow up on this success and in the ensuing years almost went out of existence. It was only
PeteRbOROUGh SPORtS hIStORY the efforts of current life president Colin Day, Secretary Roger Martin & manager Chris Bartlett that kept the club running. Tommy Cooper returned to the club in the role of Chairman in January 2011 and in that 2010/11 season the club secured its first PFA trophy since the 2nd world war when lifting the Challenge Cup and were promoted back to the Peterborough League Premier Division for a short 2 season stay. Bartlett was replaced as manager by Seamus Morgan for the 2012/13 season and the former Peterborough Northern Star reserves manager steered the club into the United Counties League with a 3rd place position in 2012/13 when Netherton turned down their promotion having finished in 2nd. The Reserves enjoyed 3 successive promotions after reforming at the start of the decade and are now in the Peterborough League Premier Division themselves, which they won in 2016/17. The clubs 1st season at UCL level started well but ultimately ended in a disappointing 16th placed finish with Morgan replaced as manager by former QPR & England Under 21 manager Chris Plummer in January. The following season 2014/15 saw the side challenging for promotion right to the end of the season, but a run of 7 away games to finish, saw them eventually finish in 5th. At the end of that season Plummer stood aside and his assistant Jimmy Dean took
the reins for the 2015/16 campaign. In his first year the club won the title at a canter by a huge 21 points. The side also picked up the UCL League Cup, becoming the first side from Division 1 to ever do so, after a penalty shoot-out triumph against Premier Division Holbeach United. The side also added the Northants Junior Cup for a 2nd time and the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup for the 1st time and were to be forever dubbed the Fourmidables. That success was continued into the 2016/17 as the team won the UCL Premier Division with a league record points tally of 112 and were the top scorers in the top 11 levels of English football with 150 in the league and 205 in all competitions. The Hinchingbrooke Cup was also retained with a 2-1 victory over 2nd placed Deeping Rangers and the side had its best ever run in the FA Vase reaching the 4th round. The club then took the jump into step 4 football and the Northern Premier League Division 1 South for the 2017/18 season. A bright start soon gave way to a real struggle with the side bottom of the league as late in the season as Jan 27th, before a storming finish saw the side rise to 12th out of a 22 club division. With an additional step 4 league implemented for 2018/19 Sports were moved into the Southern League to play in the Division 1 Central section

RePORtING IN
CaMbRIdGe CItY 3-3 dUNStabLe tOwN At 20 minutes past three there was no suggestion that Dunstable would get anything other than a pasting at the hands of the Lillywhites. With former Blues, Luton Town & England C International, Adam Watkins, pulling the strings in midfield, Cambridge were running through the gears and causing all types of problems for Dunstable, who appeared out of sorts. Two goals down already and being pulled and stretched all over the park, the 25 or so Dunstable fans present prepared for a long afternoon. Five minutes later, Marcus Gouldbourne tore down the right hand side and delivered the perfect cross for Chris Wreh to bury the ball beyond the reach of ex Town keeper Jamie Head, and suddenly Dunstable were back in the game and Cambridge knew things wouldn’t be going all their way. As the first half wore on, Dunstable started to find their feet and got the measure of their opponents, decreasing the dangerous supply of crosses coming from the left hand side, and starting to get their passing game going. Skipper Kyle Lincoln, wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, organised his defence and midfield so tightly that City attacks were largely thwarted. At the other end, Dunstable now started to pose more of a threat with Saul Williams and Marcus Gouldbourne using their considerable pace to good effect. Also looking every bit the part yesterday was Erin Amu, who I made my DTFC Man of the match for a superlative performance all over the park. It was Erin who on 73 minutes found himself in receipt of the perfect, defence
splitting ball, from Hassan Sheikh, and in space, converted the deserved equaliser. And in truth it had been coming and was nothing more than Dunstable deserved on the balance of play. The style of play was lovely to watch. No hoofball just passes to feet. Pass and move, keep probing the back lines until a gap presents itself. Hassan’s delivery had everything in it we know this man has in his locker. An eye of a needle pass, simple but so effective. No more than two minutes later and Dunstable went and did the unthinkable, as Alex Taylor, fired in off the near post to complete a memorable comeback. But City weren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. With fifteen minutes left on the clock plus stoppages, they poured men forward and with just two minutes to go Keano Robinson met a corner powerfully and with direction to give Connor Coulson no chance. However despite conceding at the same time as last week against Bromsgove, the defence held it’s nerve and even though Alex Taylor received a straight red for a late challenge, the final whistle blew at the end of a thoroughly entertaining game with the points shared. The Team worked their socks off and thoroughly deserved the hard earned point. Cambridge, I suspect, having been 2 – 0 up and seemingly coasting, will probably feel as if that was points lost and remain now without a home win since November 10th.

16 February 1931 - America’s Other New York Yankees On 16 February 1931, the American Soccer League’s Fall River Marksmen merged with the New York Soccer Club to form a new team-the New York Yankees. The Marksmen were one of the ASL’s most successful clubs, with seven league titles and three National Challenge Cup trophies from 1922 through 1930. But by the time they won their last league title in 1930 (despite playing only 27 of 30 matches), the Great Depression had lowered attendances across the league. In an effort to revive the team’s flagging revenues, owner Sam Mark moved them from Fall River, Massachusetts to New York. The team competed in the Spring 1931 league season as the New York Yankees, but had already registered for that year’s
National Challenge Cup under their former name. Accordingly, they participated in the two different competitions under two different names. As the Yankees, they finished third in the league, but as the Marksmen, they won the Cup, defeating the Chicago Bricklayers in a three-leg Final, behind strong play from their US internationals, Billy Gonsalves and Bert Patenaude. After splitting the first two matches of the Final, the Marksmen won the third leg 2-0. It was the last match the team ever played under either name, as the owner moved the team back to Massachusetts as the New Bedford Whalers.
