from the boardroom The media team has grown in the last year and we thank Joe and Kyle for being so supportive of all projects and ideas we bring to them A very warm welcome to everyone here from Risborough Rangers. We hope you find your time at Creasey Park tonight to be welcoming and enjoyable. We’d like to say a huge thank you to tonight’s match sponsors, the Mills Brothers and Maurice Sullivan. It’s been amazing the engagement we have had from supporters and local businesses, who have sponsored our matches throughout the season.
and keeping the website up to date.
Dunstable Town’s media team is the largest group of volunteers within the club – and some would say the most important! It consists of 5 people who cover every aspect of the club’s media, Brad, Chris, Liam, Matt, and Abby.
We couldn’t do any of this without you all. The incredible support you give us keeps us driving forward, looking for new ideas every day. As a club, we know we are building something very big here at Dunstable Town and we are glad to be building it together.
The media at Dunstable Town has grown hugely in the last year and we thank Joe and Kyle for being so supportive of all projects and ideas we bring to them. We knew a change of management would mean a lot of work for us, but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. On their arrival, we started ‘PITCHSIDE’ videos at away games, ‘GETTING TO KNOW’ sessions with players and staff, ‘TOWN TEAMMATES’ episodes and ‘GOAL OF THE MONTH’ which can all be found on our DTFC TV channel on YouTube. Our channel has new subscribers every week and we are motivated to grow it even further.
Whilst building the media side of Dunstable Town, we’ve had the privilege of getting to know the players. They’ve got on board with everything we’ve done which has made it very easy for us to come up with new ideas. It was a great evening seeing what celebrations the lads could pull out for their goal GIFs.
Enjoy the match!
DTFC Media Team
Come rain or shine, the media team are at every game taking photos, filming, and keeping the social media platforms up to date to make sure you can follow the Blues. Alongside this, we have enjoyed doing interviews with the youth teams, promoting our newly launched Walking Football group (as well as playing it!) DUNSTABLE TOWN v Risborough Rangers - 3

Welcome to Mark, the management, players, supporters, and everyone attached to Risborough Rangers ahead of this evening’s game. Risborough arrive here tonight having only suffered one league defeat all season and with the league title in their own hands. Mark has done a fantastic job and we are well aware tonight of the challenge that faces us. I write these programme notes still raging after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat away to Holmer Green. I must firstly apologise to our supporters and directors for that abysmal 2nd half showing and the result. I said to the players and coaching staff on Thursday that Saturday worried me. Holmer Green are fighting for their lives at the bottom. I take every game seriously and never allow league positions to affect my mindset. If as a team, you are going to be successful then you cannot drop points the way we have this week. I have said it before that I will always take full responsibility for any defeats. Ultimately, I pick the team, the system, and the personnel within it. I don’t shy away from criticism and rightfully as the manager should take the criticism for Saturday. There are a couple of things I would have done differently without a doubt. It wasn’t as if we were outplayed and deservedly beaten. It was a classic game of what happens when you don’t kill teams off, miss easy chances and then concede 2 abysmal goals. We had more than enough chances in the game to win. Dan Gould didn’t have a save to make of any real note in the game other than the 2 goals we conceded. Whilst I will take the blame and inevitable criticism, it is the first time as a manager of
4 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Risborough Rangers risborough-print.indd 4
this group of players I felt let down. It was an exceptionally long drive home and a lot of soul searching on Saturday night. It is the worst I have felt as a Coach/Manager in 20 years. Only a manager knows how it feels losing games especially when we were as poor as we were. The reason for my annoyance was everything we discussed at half time we didn’t do. I spoke about the need to start brightly in the 45–60-minute window. I warned them that they had threats at the top end of the pitch that if given a chance would score. Less than 5 minutes into the 2nd half despite having had 2 excellent opportunities which we didn’t take and then at the other end we concede a ludicrous free kick which wasn’t necessary. Unfortunately, they score the free kick from the same place Dan Naylor had scored in the 1st half. We then try to go to win the game and from our own corner players don’t do their set piece jobs and seconds later we get sucker punched. We conceded off our own set piece away at Crawley Green where we went to sleep, and players need to learn and learn quickly! We missed 2 excellent chances in stoppage time that we should have taken and ended up on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat. We spoke in the dressing room afterwards and I was later told most of Buckinghamshire had heard what I had to say! I’m a passionate, emotional person as I am sure you all see weekly. I am not someone who ever accepts losing irrespective of the opposition. I have seen certain things in the last 2 games I don’t like, and it is vital to address now. It is critical to learn these lessons this season and work out what we need to do moving forward. This time of year, pitches are horrific and unfortunately

manager’s notes joe deeney Risborough arrive here having only suffered one league defeat all season and with the league title in their own hands the league isn’t for intricate neat passing week in week out and we must be able to adapt. I have never been one who buys into this “right way of playing” nonsense I hear so frequently spoken about. The right of way of playing is to WIN it is as simple as that. There are games when you need to be able to scrap and fight and win ugly. A few of our lads over the last week have shown me that they need to toughen up if they are to survive at this level and ultimately continue to play for our club. That means tackling properly, winning headers, and striking the ball properly. I lost count the other day of the amount of under hit balls forward that just came back and the amount of needless free kicks we conceded. We are a big side and need to do a lot better at set pieces which is something we will continue to work on. You learn more from defeats than victories and it has opened my eyes on a few that might not be right for us moving forward. If we are serious about next season, then there is no room for sentiment or carrying passengers on our journey. We have 4 league games left as well as a cup competition to play for. Maybe one or two subconsciously are more worried about flights abroad than the flight of the ball. My team was picked 20 minutes after the final whistle on Saturday, and we know that tonight we better be ready against the best team in the league. We will be ready for the challenge and if it is one thing, I do know about this group is that there is an abundance of character that will compete and fight back. I am not a lover of excuses and certainly will not sit there making them. The facts are we
risborough-print.indd 5
have missed Liam McCrohan, Joe SellersWest and Kyle Faulkner who have been really big players for us this season. We are hopeful of getting Kelvin Osei-Addo back shortly to full fitness. I feel gutted for him at present, he just cannot seem to catch a break and get back to full fitness. He is the best natural finisher I have worked with, and I know once we get a good full pre-season into him then we have a real talent. One of the biggest pieces of advice I received from a vastly experienced Football League Manager is never get too high and never too low. It is great advice and whilst I try to process the last two performances it is important to take that advice on board. If I analyse our last 20 league games 3 defeats is certainly not a crisis. We were bottom in October and are now in a comfortable 10th place. Whilst it is easy to applaud the players for their efforts in the last 5 months I always want and demand more. I knew there would be bumps in the road and success is never a straight line, so it is time to park Saturday and turn in a performance this evening. Thank you to all of you for your support and the great numbers in which we continue to travel to games. I hope to bring you more to cheer this evening.

Risborough Rangers Football Club started in 1970 as a team of 12-year-olds who wanted to play competitive football

L The main motivators were Life Presidents Tony Elsey and Derek Wallace. Derek was instrumental in forming the Wycombe Star League that now provides football for hundreds of youngsters in the Wycombe area, and Risborough Rangers currently have teams at all ages ranging from the Under 10 to Under 16 playing in this league. In the 1975/76 season, the previous years Under 16’s went into the Wycombe & District League as a men’s team, and in their second season in adult football won the 3rd Division. Unfortunately, the team then folded, after which the club provided only boy’s football until the Under 16’s of 1979/80, having won the UnitedCarr Cup, went into the Reading Youth League for two seasons, and then the Wycombe & District League. They won promotion in successive seasons and were followed two years later by the following years Under 16’s as a reserve team, who emulated the feats
of their predecessor, ending up in the Ercol Senior League and the FA Walters Premier League consecutively. At around this time, Rangers moved to ‘Windsors’, their current ground. ‘Windsors’ had been the home of the now defunct Princes Risborough Town FC who were one of the founder members of the Hellenic league in 1953. Within several years, club members had managed to improve the ground substantially by building the clubhouse.
L
In 1989 Risborough accepted an invitation to join the South Midlands League Division 1. In the first two seasons the club found the level difficult and finished second from the bottom and therefore had to apply for re-election. The 1991/92 season saw a great improvement when Risborough finished in 8th position whilst also celebrating its 21st anniversary. In the 1994/95 season, they were promoted to the newly formed Senior Division, after finishing 4th under the management of Frank Carter

and they consolidated with a mid-table position in the next season. In the mid-90s, Bob Rayner became manager for the first time and saw the establishment of a sound youth policy with an Under 18’s team in the Wycombe & South Bucks Youth League. After a reasonably successful spell, in which the club reached the semi-final of the Senior Division Cup and the quarter final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy, Bob was offered the job of Brackley Town manager in the Southern league and took the opportunity to test himself at a higher level. After Bob left at the start of the 1998/99 season, former assistant Jon Franklin took over as manager and maintained a consistent level of football at the club. After Jon’s’ departure, the club began to struggle and were eventually relegated to Division Two. In 2005, chairman Richard Woodward persuaded Bob Rayner to return to the club following his departure from Thame United. Finishing fourth in his first two seasons back and just missing out on the runners up spot in the final game in the second season, Bob has had to rebuild his side from the Rangers junior ranks. He has patiently waited for his young side to blossom, and the patience began to pay off in the 2010/11 season when Rangers achieved a fifth-place finish and reached the semi-final of the Challenge Trophy, losing 2-0 to the eventual winner and Premier Division champions, Chalfont St Peter. On route to the semi-final, Rangers beat four teams from divisions above them including division one champions Berkhamsted Town. The 2011/12 season was Risborough’s best season of late with a late charge securing runners up spot in the league, and a first cup final reached in over 20 years, losing the Anagram Records Trophy final 1-0 to Baldock Town of the Hertfordshire County Senior League. The next season brought two good cup runs. Risborough’s progress in the Anagram Record’s Trophy was halted in the Semi Final by Baldock Town. The rematch of the previous
season’s final ended up with the same score line as Baldock went on to defend the trophy. A second cup final in two years was achieved via the Division 2 cup, although the prospect of lifting the cup once again alluded Rangers, this time losing 2 nil to Aston Clinton. A league finish of fourth was achieved, and with the hard work off the pitch, including securing the funding for floodlights which were erected in time for the 2012/13 season. In 2016 Risborough finally won some silverware, after several near misses over the last few years. The Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup was claimed after a 2-1 AET win over United Counties League Olney Town. 2016/17 season saw Bob Rayner retire and his son Jamie take charge saw the club finish in a creditable 6th position and reach the semi-finals of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup before losing on penalties to eventual winners Woodley United. The 2017/8 season started with some promise but sadly this didn’t last with the club finishing in 8th place, the highlight of the campaign, however, was a run in the Challenge Trophy which included victories over Premier Division sides Leighton Town, Oxhey Jets, Edgware Town, and London Colney, but alas were beaten 3-1 in the Final by fellow Division One side Broadfields United at Colney Heath. In October 2018 then current manager Jamie Rayner decided to step down from his position because of work commitments. The Club advertised the position and after a healthy response, the Board appointed Mark Eaton as their new man. When Eaton took over the club were 19th in Division One and a massive negative goal difference but come the end of the season Rangers finished in 7th spot with a positive goal difference as the season was turn on its head. The season ended though with some silverware when London Lions were defeated 2-0 in the final of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One Cup, which was played at Leverstock Green. Because of the ongoing re-construction of the non-league system the club made a lateral movement to the Hellenic League Division One East from the Spartan for the start of the 2019/20 season. The 2019/20 season saw
8 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Risborough Rangers risborough-print.indd 8

Rangers unbeaten and top the league by 12 points with a game in hand over 2nd place Abingdon United after playing 23 games out of the full 32. The COVID pandemic put an end to any hopes of promotion to step 5 for the first time in the club’s history however as the season was officially voided. However, in 2021 the club were promoted to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League based on their results in the abandoned 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons.

Sin Bins
Temporary Dismissals - otherwise known as ‘sin bins’ - will become mandatory for matters of dissent across all of grassroots football from the 2019/20 season.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SIN BIN?
Players will only go in to the sin bin for dissent cautions
For use of words or gestures questioning or undermining the ref’s decisions
EXAMPLES OF DISSENT • Shouting at the ref • Questioning ref’s ability • Slamming the ball in to the ground • Sarcastically clapping a decision
DURATION OF A SIN BIN 10
For matches of 90 minutes, players spend 10 minutes in the sin bin
8
For matches of all other lengths, players spend 8 minutes in the sin bin
If the sin bin period has not expired at the end of: 1st half: Continues into 2nd half 2nd half: Continues into extra time Extra time: Player can participate in penalties
THE MATCH DAY PROCESS
Dissent
Dissent caution: Ref issues a yellow card and directs the player to the touchline
Player can’t be substituted until period expires and not if all subs have been made
Whilst in the sin bin, if the player commits a yellow or red card offence they can’t take any further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and has already been booked, they will take no further part in the game and can’t be substituted
If the player commits a 2nd dissent caution and no other offences, they will receive a 2nd sin bin. After which they can’t take any further part in the game but can be substituted
If the player commits a yellow card offence on the field of play in addition to a period in the sin bin, they will continue to play
Ref decides when player returns to play
FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS STILL A RED CARD OFFENCE! risborough-print.indd 25

well done to all the players and especially our wonderful coaches As we are heading towards the end of season for the youth section, I wanted to say well done to all the players and especially our wonderful coaches who take the time out to run these team under the Dunstable Town badge. I know it’s not always easy, but I am grateful to have you all on board.
courage, strength, and good attitude. This will then go to a selected panel who will choose the winner for the season. This year’s has been selected and will be handed out at the family fun day. I would love to see as many youth players as possible in their kits and show your support.
Preparations are already in place for next season with dates for trials set, pre-season training, new managers joining and registration dates in place.
This season’s youth presentation will be on Saturday May 14th from 4pm at Creasey Park, where each age group will be handed their trophies in the Aaron Bateman stand.
The first team are hosting a family fun day on the last home game of the season which is the 16th of April, it’s pay what you want so please come down and support them.
I would like to say Happy Easter from myself and the rest of the Youth Committee
As some of you may know we lost a very loved and lifelong supporter of Dunstable Town and we have decided to honour his life with a shield which will be known as the Aaron Bateman Memorial Shield. Each season the managers will nominate a player who has shown great

saturday 26th march • Premier Division CREASEY PARK • attendance 220 • Andrew Madaras Joe Parmley, Ruari Mills and Remell Stirling all kept their places in the starting X1 following excellent performances in the Dudley Latham Cup on Tuesday. Their tremendous form poses selection headaches for Head Coach, Joe Deeney & Assistant Kyle Durcan. There is strength in depth in the Dunstable squad which had experienced old hands Jamie Nicholls, Dan Naylor and Kelvin Osei-Addo on the subs bench alongside Benji Gray & Jack Percy. Sitting on the subs bench for the away side was 48-year-old Scott McGleish. Scott is a former professional who made over 600 Football League appearances at Peterborough, Northampton, Wycombe, Bristol Rovers, Colchester and Barnet, with a further 300 or so in the non-league game. Scott had played the full 90 minutes v Harefield Utd on Tuesday. The consummate professional. The visitors started the liveliest and pressed hard for the first 10 minutes having several shots on goal, although none worried Gould. Dunstable came back into the game and began to press forward with greater urgency. J’Ardell Stirling had a header cleared off the line, but it was his younger brother who was in the right place at the right time to do justice to a fine piece of play from Dan Trif on the right-hand side. Trif beating his man and cutting inside to square the ball to Stirling who calmly picked his spot, before side-footing the ball past the diving hands of Alfie Bonfield. That’s three goals in his first five starts for the former Borehamwood Academy teenager.
Stirling and colleagues were now in the ascendancy but couldn’t find the back of the net again. The attendance of 220 helped create a winning prize of £95 on the 50-50 draw. Hopefully some of the new spectators who were taking advantage of the Club’s “pay what you want” promotion to celebrate Non-League Day, will have seen enough flair and determination to come back again. Dunstable’s second goal was a marvelous example of Dylan Baker’s all-round skill. His looping header from Dan Trif’s cross leaving Bonfield unable to prevent his side from going down two down with less than ten minutes of the 90 still to play. Baker’s last goal had been exactly five months to the day when Leighton Town visited Creasey Park. Moments earlier Bonfield had kept his side in the contest with a fine save from Terrence Muchineripi. However, Leverstock Green kept battling and forced their way back into the game with an 89th minute penalty which was driven powerfully and accurately, low to the left of Dan Gould’s full length dive by substitute Ethan Mooney. Referee, Louis Stamp indicated there would be a further six minutes of added on time. Kelvin Osei-Addo nearly made it three during stoppage time and a free kick just outside the box and central with seconds to go was well defended by the Dunstable wall and the three points were safe. 5 April 1902 - Disaster Strikes At Ibrox On 5 April 1902, during a match between the Scottish and English national teams at Ibrox Park in Glasgow, the West Tribune Stand collapsed, killing 25 people and injuring 547 others. Close to 80,000 people were in attendance to watch the match between Scotland and England, the first one contested between entirely professional sides. It was the final scheduled match of the 1902 British Home Championship, with the title yet to be decided. A win for either side would have delivered the championship, while Scotland could also have claimed the title with a draw. The stadium was state-of-the-art, having just been built by Rangers in 1899 for the thensubstantial cost of £20,000. Early in the match, however, a portion near the top of the western terrace (pictured above) collapsed, dropping several hundred people a distance of 40 to 50 feet. The majority of the 25 fatalities were
caused by impact, either from the fall or by debris from the collapsing structure. Three people reportedly died from shock trauma or heart failure. The collapse caused a panic in the crowd, forcing people onto the pitch. The game was halted for approximately 20 minutes, then resumed, with the teams playing to a 1-1 draw. After the extent of the injuries was revealed, the match was declared void. The teams held a replay on 3 May 1902 at Villa Park in Birmingham. The result was another draw, this time 2-2, giving the title to Scotland. The contractor who built the western terrace faced criminal prosecution later that year, but was acquitted of any wrongdoing in connection with the collapse.
