The decision to change the whole structure, constitution, and purpose of the Club to become a Community Benefit Society (CBS) was not taken lightly and it didn’t happen overnight. The creation of Dunstable Town FC Ltd on the 8th July 2021 came about only after many hours of meetings with the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), fellow CBS clubs, AFC Rushden & Diamonds & Lewes FC, and after the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) assessed we met the strictest financial standards required. The history of Community/Fan owned clubs can be traced back over 20 years, Enfield Town hold the distinction of being the first semiprofessional club to become completely owned by their fans. Dunstable Town FC became the 46th semiprofessional club to follow in their footsteps. Many of our fellow CBS clubs will have enjoyed success higher up the football pyramid before becoming community/fan owned. Privately owned and riding the boom-and-bust football rollercoaster until, almost inevitably, an investor withdraws, or debt levels become unserviceable. The club’s future hangs in the balance, or as in the case of some, goes out of business before fans’ groups decide to band together to start afresh and run a new club, ethically and sustainably.

2 - Season Review 2021-22 season-review-print.indd 2

Our most recent history since 2017 has been a tale of dogged resistance and an immense team effort by a group of individuals working together to run a semi-professional football club.

13/07/2022 19:19:05

from the boardroom Enfield Town hold the distinction of being the first semi-professional club to become owned by their fans Two successive relegations saw us begin life in the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League at the start of the 2019 – 2020 season. In March 2020 the Covid virus enveloped the country and that season, and the following season were cut short. Sponsors withdrew due to the downturn in the economy and 90% of commercial sponsorship was lost. We folded our highly successful U23’s Development Team to save money. To keep the Club intact and avoid losing its identity the Club’s members unanimously voted in two separate meetings last year to become a CBS and do things very differently. Just calling ourselves a CBS and showing off our FCA credentials would change very little. For the past three seasons, we’d campaigned vigorously to promote the work of local mental health charity, Mind BLMK. Morally it was 100% the right thing to do with there being sufficient anecdotal evidence to know for certain that our stance had helped people engage with services and address mental health issues they had personally. Whether it helped the Club financially in terms of attracting sponsors was much harder to know. We have an excellent relationship with Creasey Park and the town council who are our landlords. They are supportive of our change to a CBS club and help us in every way they can. But they have books to balance, budgets to meet and council-tax payers to answer to. There is a limit to what help we can receive from them and in our individual case we exist in a world where we enjoy matchday facilities

season-review-print.indd 3

and training facilities which are second to none, pay a fair rent for the ability to do so, but see nothing of the matchday bar and food sales money, or clubhouse hire money which is retained fully by the Council. To put this in context, at our level of football, most clubs up and down the country fund a large part of their operations through exactly those means that are not available to us. On the positive side we don’t need to worry about stadium repairs, pitch renewal or preparation for matches or replacing floodlight bulbs. It’s very much a case of swings and roundabouts, and for a Club of our size, a highly advantageous agreement if we can attract more supporters to come to matches or disadvantageous if attendances stay low. For us “walking the walk” means we do exactly what our CBS title says we do. We provide activities and groups as a “benefit to the community” free of charge for local people who want help and support either to improve levels of physical fitness or mental well-being. Our project is called Improving the Lives of Others, and while it may appear somewhat grandiose it stands all the tests which you may want to use to challenge it. We provide two Walking Football groups for people who want to address issues around physical fitness, blood pressure control, Type 2 Diabetes and weight management. Exercise stimulates the brain’s production of endorphins, the body’s own natural antidepressants so playing Walking Football

helps both physical fitness and mental wellbeing. At any given time, we can accommodate up to 50 people between our two Walking Football groups, superbly managed by Ian Bateman and gloriously kitted out in DTFC colours thanks to the generosity of the Asda Foundation. For people who don’t want physical exercise but do want more social support and the opportunity to make new friends, we have two Friendship groups which meet every week. Chums and Crumbs is a joint venture between the Club, Social Prescribers (Vicky, Imaan & Ruby) from Titan PCN & Stevenage Leisure Ltd. Lee Nutley runs the group on behalf of the Club. We meet every Thursday between 11am and 1pm in the Activities Room on the 1st floor of the Dunstable Centre. The group is becoming increasingly popular and would benefit from one or two more volunteers. On Monday afternoon Sphere at the Glider meet for three hours of arts and crafts activities courtesy of the kindness and generosity of Club sponsor and owner, Rupert Groves. Sphere provides invaluable support for a maximum of 12 people. It is a peer support group for people with lived experience of mental health problems. It is a closed group and is run by the members themselves. It is not a drop in facility but provides long term support and friendship to the members. We’ve established working partnerships with the Disability Resource Centre and ELFT NHS Foundation Trust Recovery College and will be looking to provide activities for their service users once our CBS base is established at Creasey Park and we have our own proper “home” for the additional Club’s community projects. Our commitment is to provide all our community activities free of charge. Morally & ethically the Directors believe it is the right thing to do, and it prevents the charge being levelled that we’re funding the First Team from the pockets of people who don’t have any interest in football. And that’s fine, because our mission is to enhance the social, cultural, and economic

season-review-print.indd 5

value of the Club to its communities and act as a responsible custodian of the Club for future generations. Uphold the mutual ownership of the Club operating democratically, fairly, and transparently. Ensure the Club operates with financial responsibility, enabling the Club to be run for the long-term interest of the community. Provide sporting facilities and opportunities regardless of age, income, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexuality, religious or moral belief. Play at the highest level possible, but always operating in a financially responsible and prudent manner. So far, we have 105 individual owners of the Club. Many of them live within a 5-mile radius of Creasey Park, but we also now have four owners who live overseas in Australia, Cameroon, Canada & the USA. There are very few clubs who are doing what we do in terms of the groups and activities we provide. This social enterprise model is not right for every club, particularly those with a more traditional outlook and able to raise funds to support their operations with matchday bar and food takings and clubhouse hire for weddings and birthdays. But the indications are that this has been a successful first year for us. Word is spreading slowly but surely that the Club has a future as well as a past with an alumni including George Best, Jeff Astle and Kerry Dixon. The Club wishes to thank all of those who have supported our community endeavors and express our gratitude for your support, encouragement, and guidance. A very final thank you to Richard Irving, FSA Network Manager, Community Owned Clubs, and colleagues who have guided and supported us throughout the past 18 months.

Welcome back to the new season to all attached to our great club and I hope you have had a well-earned rest and feel as energised as me for the start of the season. Last season was certainly entertaining and with loads to reflect on over the summer to ensure we enjoy more success on the pitch. The brief upon taking the job was to survive and get us away from the foot of the table which we did and turned out a very comfortable finish in the end. If I had a pound for every person that has praised us on a 9th place finish, I would be a very wealthy man. My DNA unfortunately never accepts less than 1st place so the demands increase for the season ahead. I have never been great at settling for mediocrity and that is the mentality I demand from everyone around me, and those demands go up again next season. To say eyebrows were raised when I decided to take this job from people outside the club would have been a major understatement. Comments like “are you crazy?” “have you finally lost the plot?” and “I think you have had too many hits to the head” were among the popular ones. On the face of it with hindsight, I can see their point. Bottom of the league, out of 2 cup competitions and with 6 points to show wasn’t exactly an encouraging start and hard to argue with the sentiment that perhaps I was indeed on the verge of losing the plot. In the car park at Harefield a few days after accepting the position and with multiple players in the squad substantially late, a player enjoying his prematch fuel of a Ginsters slice, a grab bag pack of crips but luckily was professional enough to only have a diet coke my mood wasn’t particularly enthused! Twenty minutes into the

6 - Season Review 2021-22 season-review-print.indd 6

game away at Harefield and I will be the 1st to admit I wondered if I had been stupidly ignorant to the people who told me I was crazy! Fortunately, my gut instinct on the people in charge of the club turned out to be spot on. My Interview with Andrew, Gary, Matt, Julian, and Lee gave me full faith I was at the right club and working for the right people. Leaving the pitch at Harefield having been fortunate to have only lost 4-0 to applause from our supporters summed up where the club was at that point. The applause whilst appreciated by the players, hurt me. The supporters and their loyalty deserved more and not have to stand there and applaud us off the back of a dismal display! I never forget that moment and never get complacent when things are going well because things can change so quickly. I feel immensely proud that I have played albeit only a small part in getting smiles back on faces, being able to associate myself with supporters spanning the globe as well as increased attendances both home and away. The support we had last season was fantastic. I don’t think the Regiment and our Directors will realise how much their support was felt by myself and the players. When you are winning regularly management feels like a breeze at times. Sleep is easy, energy levels are high and even the dark clouds can look appealing. When you lose games, and the world feels a lonely place those taps on the shoulder and words of reassurance are massively appreciated. For those that travelled to Holmer Green to watch our horror show of a 2nd half performance as well as our quite frankly pathetic display against Crawley Green will understand that this is far more than just a game to me. The support

manager’s notes joe deeney Twenty minutes into the game away at Harefield and I will be the first to admit I wondered if I was crazy! shown from our Directors and supporters was immense during those times. I must give huge credit to the players for last season. The group we had last season were young in general with no experience at all of Step 5 and the demands required. Their attitudes, resilience and togetherness took us from a terrible position to a decent position in a quick turnaround. Like anything in life, the world moves on and football is no different. The sole remaining survivor on the pitch is Dylan Baker for this year’s squad. I believe it was the great Albert Einstein that said, “insanity is repeating the same mistakes over and over again and expecting different results”. We learned invaluable lessons last season and lessons that will hold us in good stead for the forthcoming season. We identified very early in the process the players that we believe can take us forward and achieve our goals for next season. We have signed 6 new players. Charlie Jones and Connor Coulson (Goalkeepers), Tom Bryant (Right Back), Kyle Davison-Gordon (Left Back/ Left Centre Back), Harry Beaumont and Alfie Osborne (Midfielders). I am delighted with the additions to the group. You will have heard me talk about types of people and how important attitudes are and we have signed outstanding characters. Not one of the 6 we signed talked about money nor made outlandish demands, they all bought into the vision and the Football Club. Recruitment is critical and so is Retention! I am so proud of the group of players we have retained. Several of our players from last season have had chances to move on this summer in some cases to earn 2-3 times their wages and have rejected those moves to stay

season-review-print.indd 7

here! I don’t know many if any players that would have done that. Full credit to the lads for their loyalty and love for the club and I am delighted they have stayed because we love having them here. I am incredibly excited to get pre-season underway and for the season to get started. We had some fantastic times last season and probably too many to mention in truth. Our 14-game unbeaten run was one of the many highlights in the season and credit to the players for their excellent work in achieving what they did. We have so many wonderful people at our football club. Volunteers, Directors, Sponsors, Owners, Our Media Team, Supporters, Kit Man, Welfare Officer and without each of you we simply don’t have a team to put on the pitch. The players and Management appreciate each and every one of you. Thank you for all your help and support since October and I look forward to continuing the journey together. I have no doubts there will be highs and bumps in the road and I am really looking forward to experiencing this journey together and most importantly sticking together through adversity and triumph. Bring on 2022 / 2023.

Dunstable Town FC are now in their 138th year. A former home to George Best, Jeff Astle, Kerry Dixon, and more recently, Peter Kioso, the Club can boast a rich heritage, a proud past and nowadays the honour of being only the 46th club in the UK to be a completely fan owned club run by its fans as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) The Club is a legal entity & is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and supported as a CBS by the Football Supporters’ Association. The Club now operates as a social enterprise. Between Monday and Friday, we run four different groups for people in our local community who want to improve their levels of physical fitness and mental well-being, increase their social support networks and enjoy a safe space while in recovery from mental ill-health. The Club is now in its fourth year of supporting the work of Mind BLMK (Beds, Luton & Milton Keynes) as well as now promoting CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and a local peer support group, Minds2gether. The Club has a specialist Mental Health Advocate who works with local mental health services and charities. The move to become a CBS was necessary to ensure the Club had a sustainable future. The financial effects of Covid in 2020 saw commercial sponsorship drop by 90% and overall income halved resulting in the decision to fold the U23’s Development Team at the end of the 2019 – 20 season.

10 - Season Review 2021-22 season-review-print.indd 10

With no matchday income from the bar or food sales and no clubhouse to hire out, the Club relies almost totally on gate receipts,

dunstable town a brief history A group of 15 fans took over the running of the Club in order to keep it in the Premier Division of the Southern League sponsorship, fundraising and prize money for its income.

three seasons (9th) which included a 14 game unbeaten run.

The running of the Club was passed to the fans in 2017 after the wholesale departure of the Board, coaching staff, and all but two of the players. A consortium of three local businessmen offered to save the Club, but on condition they would seek voluntary relegation from the Premier Division of the Southern League.

Attendances rose by over 50% to an average of 189 and Club ownership now stands at 104.

A group of 15 fans took over the running of the Club in order to keep it in the Premier Division of the Southern League and despite successive relegations the model of being a members’ run Club proved sufficiently popular for the decision to become a CBS to be backed unanimously by the fans. Fans now have the opportunity to become owners & buy a single share in the Club and receive exclusive discounts with local traders under the Blue Card scheme. This model of Fan Ownership ensures that the Club will always stay in the hands of its supporters and cannot be taken over by one single investor determined to ride the nonleague financial rollercoaster.

Partnerships have been established with the Disability Resource Centre, ELFT NHS Foundation Trust Recovery College, Healthwatch central Beds, Titan PCN & Stevenage Leisure Ltd. Every week the Club supports nearly 100 people at its various groups. All groups are free to join and participate in. We use a proportion of owners’ membership fees to pay for the setup and running costs of the groups as well as receiving grants from Asda and other organisations and the generosity of Platinum owner Rupert Groves at The Glider who hosts our friendship group, Sphere at the Glider, every Monday. In common with all CBS clubs our aim is to play at the highest level we can do while providing a sustainable future for future generations of players, supporters, and owners.

The Club appointed Joe Deeney as Head Coach in early October. Joe had managed at Step 2 with Hemel Hempstead Town FC and brought with him an experienced back-room team including Kyle Durcan as his number 2. Languishing at the bottom of the SSML Premier division when Deeney took over and already knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup & FA Vase at the first time of asking, Deeney & Durcan gave the Club its highest finish in

End of Season Awards Supporters’ favourite and Club legend, Daniel Trif, who completed his 5th season at Creasey Park said his goodbyes The Creasey Park Clubhouse was packed as the Coaching and Playing staff, Club sponsors, owners and volunteers celebrated the Club’s successes both on and off the field. Head Coach, Joe Deeney and his Assistant, Kyle Durcan have transformed the fortunes of the Club. Lying bottom of the Premier League table in October when they arrived, they oversaw a wholesale change in the playing squad and finished in a creditable 9th place which included a 14 game unbeaten League run lasting over four months. Deeney & Durcan will be looking to add strength and experience to the squad during the summer and make a competitive challenge for silverware next season, but this night was all about rewarding all those who work so hard behind the scenes as well as the players’ individual accolades. Supporters’ favourite and Club legend, Daniel Trif, who completed his 5th season at Creasey Park said his goodbyes and received the coveted Owners’ Player of the Year award. Dan will be heading home later this summer but will always be welcome at Creasey Park. He received a Club Owner’s pack and a special award for his unstinting loyalty and commitment to the Club since his arrival from London Tigers in 2017 with the club playing in the Premier Division of the Southern League. The Manager’s Player of the Year award was impossible to split between Liam McCrohan and Kyle Faulkner, so rather than share it and each have it for six months, they received a trophy each! J’Ardell Stirling received the Coaching team’s award as their Player of the season.

season-review-print.indd 15

The Players’ Player of the Year and the award for top goal scorer went to Joe Sellers-West for his one goal every two games record. The Goal of the Season award was voted for on the night, as wall-mounted TV screens replayed each winning goal of the season. Jack Percy was the deserving recipient for his fearsome strike into the bottom corner away at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos on January 15th. The Club’s Young Owners chose keeper Dan Gould as their Player of the Season while Ethan Creary beat off stiff opposition to receive the Young Player of the Year award. Chair, Andrew Madaras, reminded everyone that as well as the players’ success the Club’s Community Benefit Society activities had provided over 100 hours of physical activity and emotional support, company & friendship and was now supporting nearly 100 people every week. The final award of the night was for Clubperson of the Year. There was only ever going to be one winner after raising a staggering £8,000 with his fundraising schemes as part of the Blues4-5K L&D Hospital Campaign. The Club was proud to hand over £5K to the Cancer Unit at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital earlier this year. Peter Bottom is the Club’s Fundraising Manager and won the award unanimously. A magnificent achievement for a man who is so highly respected by all at the Club.

Tuesday, August 3rd & an evening kick-off under the Creasey Park lights with the visit of new boys to the SSMFL, MK Irish. A lot of reading up to do to bring myself up to date with their history and like most of our fans I’m full of optimism for a successful season. During the summer break, the Club became a Community Benefit Society and expectations are high that we’d create some news on the field as well as off it.

The best laid plans of mice and men. The men from Bletchley haven’t read the script. A pretty miserable evening turned on a red card for Matt Ellis and a viral clip of our steward escorting Matt from the pitch gets over 26,000 views and a mention on Sky Sports. A four nil home defeat was not how we’d expected the match to end. On the positive side, the gate was 138.

5 days later and the opportunity to quickly forget Tuesday night and bask in the magic of the Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. North Greenford Utd are the visitors to Creasey Park. It’s a glorious summer day. A new venture of providing different football food to tempt the

dunstable town season review the highs & lows of the 2021-22 season by Andrew Madaras Photos by Chris White and Liam SmitH taste buds and waistlines showcases Clovis’ culinary delights as Jamaica Mi Crazy sell jerk chicken, curried goat and rice ‘n peas like there’s no tomorrow. Drew Phillips powers us ahead in the first few minutes, but the wheels come off and another heavy defeat follows, this time it’s 1 – 5.

Hadley come to town on the Tuesday night. Despite three successive defeats the crowd is still loyal and give the team their support. Dan Gould returns in goal. A much better performance but another defeat albeit a narrow 1 – 0 to a side who will get promoted at the end of the season. Risborough Rangers are next. A decent second half performance and a goal from Tyler Fry. Complimentary comments from the Risborough management team on our performance and then it’s off up the A505 to Leighton for a Tuesday night match against our local rivals. It’s a decent performance alright but not rewarded with goals or points, and Leighton get all three points with a comfortable 2 – 0 victory.

This is the second successive year that the FA has cut the prize money for the Emirates FA Cup by half compared to pre-COVID levels. As the losing side, we will receive just £375. Had we won the prize money would have been £1,125 and another home tie with even bigger sums of money at stake. Losing cup games is an expensive business. A week later and we travel south on the M1 to Leverstock Green. The management team strengthened the defence with the signing of Bobby Armstrong from London Colney and the return of John Sonuga. Dan Gould is still unavailable so St Albans City loan signing, Mo Elmasry is between the sticks. It’s a pretty straightforward 3 – 0 win for the home side but we compete and never give up.

British Airways FC are next on the 11th of September in the First Round Qualifying of the FA Vase. Not surprisingly their ground borders Heathrow Airport. Goals from Simon Richards and Dan Trif look to have been enough to get what would be an important morale boosting win. The referee plays 8 minutes of stoppage time and with almost the last kick of the game the home side equalize and end up going through to the next round on penalties.

We earn just £160 from the prize fund kitty. We’re bottom of the League and now out of both FA prize-winning competitions. Played 7 and lost 7 is not the start we’d expected or planned for. Fortunately, Matt had budgeted conservatively and had not included any prize money in the budget forecast. Make no mistake; this hurt all of us and none more so than Gareth, Ivan & Anthony who had worked so hard on the coaching side of things.

Interviews are held on Saturday 2nd October at the Holiday Inn Express. Joe Deeney is offered the post and accepts it. He’ll be supported by Kyle Durcan. With National League South experience at Oxford City and Hemel Hempstead, Joe is the man we trust with turning our aspirations into reality.

A bit too early to describe Baldock’s visit on Tuesday 14th September as a “6 pointer” but this was bottom (us) v next bottom (Baldock) and a season low 87 diehards witnessed the away side outperform us and we say goodbye to First Team Manager, Gareth Jackson, who submits his resignation. One of the fans and Club officials who helped rescue the Club back in 2017, Gareth deserves all our thanks and gratitude for everything he did for the Club. Anthony Christophi takes over as Caretaker Manager at just 24 years old. And of course, as fate would have it goes on to win his first two matches in charge. Harpenden are his first scalp. Goals from Tyler Fry and Gary Jones in front of a crowd of 149 is quickly followed by a first clean sheet away at Tring where a Dan Trif back post goal is enough to lift the Club off the bottom spot. A second half floodlight failure threatens to end proceedings prematurely but thankfully the game re-starts, and the points return to Creasey Park. Garry Jones celebrates securing Dunstable’s first win of the season. Garry Jones celebrates securing Dunstable’s first win of the season. Applications flood in for the vacant Head Coach position. Overseas applicants with Champions League experience as part of Mourinho’s backroom staff apply but don’t speak English. LinkedIn is a wonderful invention but I think it has its limitations for Step 5 appointments. We know better next time! MK Irish dent Anthony’s 100% win percentage as they do enough to beat us on home turf, 3 – 1 on Saturday 25th September. Applicants for the Head Coach position number well over 20. It’s a thankless task to shortlist only 5 or 6 when there are so many suitably qualified and experienced applicants.

36 - Season Review 2021-22 season-review-print.indd 36

His first test is away at Harefield. There’s a good away following. This is the opportunity “Gareth’s players” have to show they have the skill, the character, personal attributes and hunger to succeed that Joe seeks in all his players. Harefield run out 4 – 0 winners and only Dan Gould, Dan Trif & Dylan Baker from the line-up that day stay with the Club for the remainder of the season. New names appear on the teamsheet for the Tuesday night visit of Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. Joe’s men. Players he knows and trusts. A battling performance and worthy of a point, but ultimately another loss, but a very healthy crowd of 148 shows Deeney & Durcan’s appointment has sparked a lot of interest. Then at the third time of asking, an away day victory at the home of Rayners Lane FC on the 16th October, where Broadfields Utd groundshare. A very impressive facility and a very impressive performance. Joe SellersWest opens the scoring, Kwazim Theodore executes an absolute beauty and despite the home side making a strong come back with Theodore shown a straight red, we hang on and run out deserved winners. And it’s no fluke. Leighton Town visit on Tuesday night. The gate is 435 and Creasey Park is hit by staff shortages and is unable to serve any

food. Jamaica Mi Crazy sells out of salt fish and ackees, chicken wings and patties. A 1-1 draw is a fair result in an absorbing contest.

Challenge Trophy by assuring myself once Jimmy Hartley put us 2 – 0 up deep into the second half that victory is ours. When you have as many football superstitions as I do you know that really is the height of stupidity. It was a case of déjà vu as Ampthill equalized with the last kick of the game and then went on to win the resulting penalty kicks. Another game against Leighton Town and additional gate receipts would have been very welcome but was not to be. Anybody who told me in an attempt to console my disappointment that we can concentrate on the League was unceremoniously removed from the Christmas Card list.

It’s the highest gate since Hereford came to town in February 2018 and Creasey Park rocked with two sets of passionate and wellbehaved fans getting behind their teams. Even Joe is allowed a bad day in the office (occasionally!) Flackwell Heath (a) on Halloween Eve was it. Drawing 0 – 0 at half time we imploded in the second half and shipped 5 goals in “a close your eyes and watch from behind the sofa” 45 minutes.

Salvation came four days later away at London Colney on the 13th of November. Five goals and three points and little do we know at the time, that this will be the start of a 14 game unbeaten run in the League which will last until 15th March.

Terrence Muchineripi had hit the crossbar shortly before the break and I drove home wondering the imponderable “if only” question. I learn Joe fronts up to everything. There’s no hiding and no passing the buck. You’ll have to take my word for it that not every manager or head coach accepts full responsibility when things go wrong. But Joe does and his “mea culpa” to the fans and committee was symbolic of everything that this man brings with him to the Club. Pride, professionalism, and character. The same exacting standards he demands of his players, he demands of himself and his coaching staff. We bounce back against table topping New Salamis a week later. Joe Sellers-West netted again and even though we narrowly lost against the eventual league champions, Creasey Park was abuzz with excitement and the chatter among the fans of new beginnings. It’s not personal, but I dread going to Ampthill as we always seem to lose. Knocked out unceremoniously in the Vase the previous season I manage to jinx the result in the

season-review-print.indd 37

A very narrow home win v Oxhey Jets follows the next Saturday with Joe Sellers-West netting the all-important goal. Scottie excels himself with his programme which moved one of the Oxhey Jets committee to tears with his tribute to Tom Lake, one of Jets’ fallen comrades in Afghanistan. We decided two years ago that we would try and make a DTFC matchday the best football experience locally. The best programme, the best pre-match hospitality, the best choice of merchandise, the best choice of food from our partnership with Jamaica Mi Crazy, the best social media platforms and of course the best matchday atmosphere. For the second successive year Scottie’s

programmes have won awards and now have the honour (and I genuinely mean “honour”) of being ranked the 18th best programme in the whole non-league pyramid. An absolutely fantastic achievement. The result on Tuesday night against Holmer Green bamboozled me. A very controversial late penalty spared Green’s blushes with film footage clearly showing no contact had been made, the 2 -2 draw actually felt like a defeat. I gave us the moral win despite what the record books showed!

attendance is 201, unheard of around these parts with a week to go before Christmas. With the Christmas fixture away at Crawley Green postponed the New Year fixture v Arlesey Town attracts a bumper crowd of 281. It’s the Deeney & Durcan effect. A good game of football ends all square at 2 -2. It’s now seven games unbeaten in the League.

That man Scottie was in the news again on Saturday. Along with Dean & Peter, they walked the 20kms from Creasey Park to Rothamsted Park, Harpenden to raise money for charity. There is a dramatic finale where it’s our turn to grab an equalizer in the 4th minute of stoppage time and a draw feels like a win. We climb up the table to 15th place. Into December and it’s now four games unbeaten and the return of former Assistant Manager, Ryan Sturgess and several former Blues now playing for Tring Athletic. There’s an above average crowd in Creasey Park on the 4th of December and an early injury to one former Blue, Adam Sawyer, makes life difficult for the away side. Dunstable capitalize on the visitor’s misfortunes and chalk up a comprehensive 3 – 0 victory. Sellers-West, Faulkner & Muchineripi score the goals which make sure I have a happy birthday.

Aylesbury Vale Dynamos away on the 15th of January. A great turnout from 50 or so Dunstable fans easily identifiable by their bobble hats and scarves in the crowd. J’Ardell Stirling is taken to hospital by Club Welfare Officer, Kristy Lewington following a heavy challenge. What makes this Club so special? The fact that Kristy drove J’Ardell over 40 miles to his home in London so that he could receive treatment closer to home if necessary. Steve bringing Remell home in the other car with George and Freddie. Thankfully J’Ardell’s injury isn’t too severe and both Stirling boys, and their car, are safely home. “All in a day’s work for the Club Welfare Officer” Kristy will modestly tell me afterwards. I discover a strange new acronym ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) and file under New Salamis (away).

Two weeks later and a week before Christmas, Flackwell Heath come for the return match. A very good game of football ends all square with Joe Sellers-West again finding the back of the net. It’s his 7th goal in just 12 appearances. The

38 - Season Review 2021-22 season-review-print.indd 38

A Jack Percy screamer seconds away from the 90 minutes looks to have sealed all three points before the curse of the “last kick of the match” returns and sees the home side grab an equalizer. It feels like a defeat. On Tuesday 18th January a big crowd of 365 pack into Creasey Park and watch a very polished performance from a Luton Town team

13/07/2022 19:20:00

featuring a mix of Youth & Academy players. Elliot Thorpe is the standout Hatter for me but it’s a good experience for Deeney’s young disciples. Luton eventually go through the gears and win 5-0. Saturday sees our shortest distance travelled for an away match as we drive the 7 miles to the Brache and a somewhat workman like performance against Crawley Green, who themselves feature a couple of former Blues in their starting XI.

The next match turned into a celebration of Aaron’s 28 years of life. Our opponents, Broadfields Utd played their part in proceedings with huge dignity. Respect to Ryan & Connor Duffy & everyone at Broadfields Utd. Thank you, gentlemen, for your friendship and sportsmanship. It will live long in our memories. The football family united.

Three good goals from Creary, Sellers-West and Faulkner are enough for the three points and SSML game number 9 unbeaten.

A 3 – 0 home win was a fitting way to remember Aaron with players and coaching staff going over to Aaron’s family and friends at the final whistle to show their respect and solidarity.

Harefield Utd are the opposition for game number 10 unbeaten. How much Deeney & Durcan have achieved in just 15 weeks is evident for all to see. Brushed aside in a very professional way at Preston Park on October 9th, today is Dunstable’s turn to snare the Hares, with that man, Sellers-West again grabbing the all-important goal. If I could omit the next match on the 12th February v Ardley I would do. The game finishes 1 -1 and the camaraderie in the clubhouse after the game between players, coaches and fans is a cruel antecedent to the events that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning as committee members and supporters enjoyed some live music and each other’s company around town. That night we lost Aaron Bateman who loved this Club as much as we all do and followed us home and away in all weathers in his trademark replica shirt and leather jacket. Never a bad word to say to anyone and one of life’s gentle souls, who always had a smile on his face.

season-review-print.indd 39

The same scoreline was repeated a week later when London Colney visited. A heroic goalkeeping performance from the away keeper kept the score respectable. Remell Stirling scoring on his debut. A crowd of 214 demonstrated there really was a resurgence in home support not seen for many years. The Club’s transformation to a Community Benefit Society in the summer had also created a lot of excitement and saw a return to Creasey Park of old supporters and some new supporters. Arlesey Town away were the final opponents on the 14 game unbeaten run. Goals from Joe Sellers-West and an audacious volley from distance from Kyle Faulkner saw the Blues return home with another clean sheet and three more precious points. 30 points from 14 games is a very decent return and was made up of 8 wins and 6 draws. Kyle was on the score sheet early on in the next game away at Hadley on the 15th of March. A proverbial tale of two halves saw the home side score three quick goals in the second half and for the first time in three months, we tasted

League defeat but at least it is from the comfort of a very respectable mid table position.

Filed for future reference under Flackwell Heath/back of the sofa/eyes closed.

New Salamis will be remembered for the players’ post-match sandwiches. Or rather the lack of them. Although the siege we laid to their goal in the second half before they secured victory with a break away third goal will have pleased many of the travelling away support. Remell Stirling showed the benefits of never giving up with a very well taken solo goal.

A second consecutive defeat is inflicted by Risborough Rangers three days later but injuries to key personnel have not helped so the comprehensive away win at Oxhey Jets on the 9th of April is most welcome. Joe Mead scores a brace with Benji Crilley heading home a third on the far post. Crawley Green overturn the form book and deservedly get all three points on the 16th of April and then on Thursday night Ardley Utd are too good and too strong and win comprehensively 4 – 1 in the Premier Division Cup. Less than 48 hours later though a large travelling contingent celebrates Jack Percy’s injury time winner at Ardley Utd to see the season complete and a well-oiled singalong on the coach home. 17-year-old debutant Axel Piesold is Man of The Match.

A winning penalty from Joe Mead was enough to knock Arlesey Town out of the Premier Division Cup on the 22nd March. The game had finished 1 – 1 at the end of 90 minutes. Kelvin Osei-Addo turned on a sixpence in the box and hammered an unstoppable shot to put the Blues 1 up in the first half. The second period was war of attrition like with the drama of penalties coming at the end of 90 minutes. A battling performance saw us edge past Leverstock Green 2 – 1 on the 26th March. Dylan Baker deservedly got on the scoresheet with Remell grabbing the other. It’s a third successive attendance over 200. Another trip to Arlesey on Tuesday night. This time it’s to play against Baldock Town who groundshare at the New Lamb Meadow. It’s a difficult watch but the boys dig in and grind out a useful point. Dan Gould is the Blues hero with three excellent saves. A decent first half away at Holmer Green on the 2nd of April really should have seen us out of sight by half time. Dan Naylor’s wicked free kick though was the only advantage we took into the half time break. A very poor second half saw the home side punish us and the large away support struggle to comprehend what they’ve just witnessed.

Injuries clearly adversely affected performances in the latter part of the season but for the team to challenge for honours next season there will need to be greater strength in depth. As it’s football which brings us together it was only right that the Club came together as one to stand in solidarity with Ian & Charlotte. They would do the same for every single one of us. We, therefore, look ahead to the new season with Aaron’s favourite Idles lyric always in our thoughts and hearts. “In spite of it all, life is beautiful” Aaron Bateman RIP.
