Change the conversation on mental health #headsup thefa.com/headsup

inside the boardroom A very warm welcome to our guests from Shefford Town & Campton for the first group stage match in the Gladwish SSML Spring Cup Prior to lockdown Shefford Town & Campton were having an excellent season in Division One having won eight of their eleven games & sitting top of the table three points clear of MK Irish. Both clubs were competing for top spot with London Lions and St Panteleimon, in third and fourth places, respectively. We can expect today to be as tough a test as our friendly against Step 6 Hellenic League, Risborough Rangers was on Tuesday night. A pre-match blizzard covered the pitch with snow and needed the sweeping prowess of Sam Giddings to reveal the snow-covered lines to ensure the game could go ahead. We needed a Chris Stapleton penalty to earn a draw in arctic conditions. Gareth & Ivan fielded separate teams for each half to give players much needed match practice and shake off ring rustiness having only played three games in the last five months. Last Saturday we travelled to Harlow to play Essex Senior League side, DT FC. A potential banana skin of a game was managed professionally by the lads, with goals from Jeremiah Debayo, Davide Pobbe and Leo Pedro sparing any blushes. Leo had become a dad a few hours earlier, so hearty congratulations to Leo & his partner on the birth of their baby daughter. Off the field, the Committee voted unanimously on Wednesday to restructure the Club and adopt a Community Benefits Society model of Fan Ownership. There will be much more information on this subject in the coming weeks. We still need the approval of the Club’s

30 members to proceed with the necessary changes in time for next season. A Special General Meeting for Members has been arranged for Tuesday April 27th to consider the proposal and make a formal decision whether to proceed or not. If accepted our Community activity will be just as big a part of Club life as the football on a Saturday afternoon. Our thanks to the Football Supporters Association who are advising us and to Stuart Fuller & Ralph Burditt, Chairmen of Lewes FC & AFC Rushden & Diamonds for giving us so much of their time and explaining how CBS has benefited their Clubs. Our partnership with Pro:Direct Academy Luton will hopefully see us field an U18’s side on a Thursday night in the Floodlit League and an U19’s in the Tactic Wednesday lunchtime league. Our relationship with DKD Coaching (an offshoot of PDAL) saw several of our Youth Section players get coaching from UEFA B qualified coaches at Beds FA HQ on Tuesday. Next Saturday we take on Aylesbury Vale Dynamos in the second group match of the Gladwish Cup & I will be handing over programme note duties to Matt Carrington for a look at DTFC through the eyes of our Treasurer & Vice Chair. Finally, many thanks to Brad Cawthorne & George Knight for providing the live stream and commentary for tonight’s match. If all goes well, we will try and provide a similar service for the Aylesbury game next week

Shefford Town & Campton

opposition spotlight..

In 2010 Shefford Town merged with near neighbours Campton. The club has had success both on and off the pitch in recent years since its reformation Founded in 1910, the club played its first football in September when it began to enter a team into the Biggleswade and District Junior League. Playing home matches at Ivel Road, the team contested this local competition until 1949–50, when Shefford began to enter its team into the South Midlands League. The side won the Beds Senior Cup that season, a feat it repeated in 1953. After finishing runners-up in the Beds Senior Cup the following year, winning it again in 1955 and capping these feats with two successive league championships, Shefford Town started to contest the Parthenon League against teams from further afield – some away trips took the team as far as London. In the new league, Shefford finished as runners-up in the first season before spending two more years in the competition. After three years, the long journeys and sparse league programme led the club to join the more local United Counties League.

6 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Shefford Town & Campton

In 1960–61, the league championship came to Shefford, and the club added the North Beds Charity Cup to its trophy cabinet during the same week. The following season saw a drastic change in fortunes, as the team finished second from bottom – the club reacted by arranging a move back to the South Midlands League. The team came third during the first season back in the division, and in 1973–74 the team finished as runners-up. However, the club was relegated in 1975–76. Success didn’t come back to Ivel Road until the early 1980s – in 1982–83 Shefford lifted the Division One title, and finished the following season as league champions. During 1983–84, Shefford also won the North Beds Charity Cup, the Biggleswade Knockout contest and the Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup. The North Beds Charity and Biggleswade Knockout double was repeated the following year.

CLUB INFO NICKNAME: The Bluemen FOUNDED: 2010 CAPACITY: 1,000 During the late 1980s the club stagnated, as the team tumbled back into Division One after finishing bottom in 1989–90. After three uneventful seasons, Shefford Town were moved to the Senior Division on league reorganisation. Though performances improved, with the team finishing fifth in 1993–94, the club was wound up and played its final match on 18 May 1994. Shefford Town Football Club was reformed in 2009 by Dan Pinkerton and Graham Earl, who had been involved in local youth football. The new club was accepted into the Bedfordshire County Football League for the 2009–10 season, and assigned a place in Division Two, at level 13 of the English football league system. The club has had success both on and off the pitch in recent years since its reformation, the club were crowned Bedfordshire County Premier Division Winners in 2011–12, 2017– 18 and 2018–19. MATCH REPORT DT FC 0-3 Dunstable Town saturday 3rd april 2021 Early pressure from the home side saw Dan Gould make an important save from a header following a corner but the Blues had their own attacking intentions and had a Dan Trif effort ruled out for offside after 10 minutes. A minute later the Assistant Referee’s flag stayed down, and Jeremiah Debayo wheeled away in delight as his goal put the Blues one up. Leo Pedro nearly doubled the lead a few minutes later but his effort was well saved by the DT FC keeper, who had an excellent game all afternoon. However even he was unable to keep out Davide Pobbe’s rebound following a good save from Tyler Fry’s piledriver from a tight angle. Two up with less than 20 minutes on the clock was a good start and seemed to quieten some of the early endeavour from the home team. DT FC did not give up and were industrious and probing but ultimately could not find the key to unlock the Dunstable defence. On the half hour a cross from Kissiedu looked inviting but nobody in a red shirt could do it justice. A shot from 20 yards a couple of minutes earlier was just past the post. Dunstable retained possession well, worked together as a team and allowed their opponents little time on the ball. A very decent first half performance ended with another stinging free kick from Jeremiah Debayo being well taken by the keeper. Half time gave Gareth & Ivan the chance to bring on L’Kharmi Gale, Joseph Debayo, Josh Going, Roy Byron, and Dylan Fitzpatrick.

There was no let-up though in performance levels with all five players doing their jobs well. L’Kharmi out on the right, although not his preferred position, looked dangerous on the ball and put in a decent performance. Josh looked cool, calm, and collected while Roy & Joseph let their older heads and experience do the talking. Ten minutes into the second half and Dan Gould needed to be at his best to save a stinging free kick. Five minutes later he again pulled off a fine save. Dan’s handling and positioning throughout the afternoon was exemplary. A midfield battle was intense with no quarter given, but the game was effectively won with a quarter hour left when Leo Pedro was upended in the box. Leo slotted home the resulting penalty sending the keeper the wrong way. Cue celebratory baby rocking motions from the terraces. Rolling substitutions saw Aaron, Jeremiah & Dan Trif return to the fray, but the Dunstable back line held firm against the red shirts. A last-minute, last-ditch tackle from Aaron Asare showed the determination to keep a clean sheet. This was a good test for the Blues against a team who you fancy will do very well in their League again next season. Plenty of spectacle and debating points from the afternoon but mission accomplished as far as Gareth & Ivan are concerned. Game time for the players, a good result, and no injuries ahead of another behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday v Risborough Rangers.

all the latest news and views from the dunstable town youth section It is good to be back and was great to see the Youth players back training on Thursday night. Milton Keynes District Development League was back at the weekend and the rest of our youth teams will be back this Sunday with the Mid Beds Mini Soccer League and Chiltern Youth League.

Secretary Kristy Lewington kristy.dunstabletownfc@gmail.com Treasurer Christian Baxter cbaxterdtfc@gmail.com

Also, a big welcome to our new Partners DKD Coaching, some of our under 11s & 12s attended a session on Tuesday and all the boys had great fun. We look forward to more age groups attending in future holidays. We had the pleasure of watching our first team on Saturday at Harlow Town. Even though it was the lads first game back they all looked in good shape and finished the game 3-0 winners. If anyone needs to contact us at the Youth section here are our contact details. day and knight george knight shares his views of the day VAR … Where it all went wrong? VAR has recently emerged in football and has had a huge role to play in many big games over the last couple of years. VAR’s breakthrough was at the 2018 Russia World Cup, a tournament which was won by an unstoppable French side with Kylian Mbappe being the star of their team. Throughout the tournament people were enjoying the use of the new technology with the reason being we were seeing more goals. The handball rule felt as if it touched a players arm a free kick/penalty was awarded. The tournament was significant because it had the most penalties awarded at any World Cup Finals Tournament. Fans in England were crying out for VAR to be introduced saying that key decisions we had seen over the years would have been changed if we had the help of a Video Assistant. In 2019/20 fans were given what they asked for as VAR was introduced for the first time in the English Premier League. The new technology was meant to assist the on-field officials on goals, potential red cards and offsides. Case 1 – Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa. Villa were denied a last gasp equaliser by referee Kevin Friend in their clash with The Eagles, Friend adjudged that in the build-up to the goal Villa skipper Jack Grealish had simulated and gained an advantage as he squared to Henri Lansbury who slotted it past the keeper. Replays showed that not only did Grealish receive contact off Wilfried Zaha and Gary Cahill, the least that should have been awarded was a penalty, however because Friend blew his whistle before the ball had crossed the goal-line it was impossible to award the goal.

Case 2 – Manchester United vs Liverpool. In a clash at the top end of the table between two of the biggest sides in England VAR was brought to attention for one key decision. Marcus Rashford gave United the lead in the first half after a quick counter attack, in the buildup to the goal Liverpool forward Divok Origi appeared to have been fouled by defender Victor Lindelof however referee Martin Atkinson decided to allow play to continue. Fans were puzzled as the goal went to a VAR review, but the assistant official did not see anything wrong with the goal, missing the clear foul on the Liverpool striker. VAR was brought in for ‘clear and obvious errors’. You now get the impression that VAR has hindered football in England because with the very harsh offside rule where a player can be offside by a sleeve we are now seeing less goals and the entertainment factor of football is slowly fading away. Do we blame our officials? It is tough to say if it is entirely the referee’s fault, their training or even the rules. I believe we have a long way to go before we see VAR being as effective as it is in other sports such as Rugby and Cricket, but now given that VAR will be introduced to the Sky Bet Championship from the 2021/22 season changes will certainly have to be made if we are to see this system work in England.

10 April 1886..

Home Is Where The Hearts Are Heart of Midlothian open new ground On 10 April 1886, Heart of Midlothian F.C. opened its current ground, Tynecastle Stadium, with a 4-1 win in a friendly against English side Bolton Wanderers. Located on Edinburgh’s Gorgie Road, the stadium has hosted a number of historic matches and undergone several renovations since that first match, including the construction of the old Main Stand by famous stadium architect Archibald Leitch.

In 2004, in an effort to curb the club’s rising debt, Hearts chief executive Chris Robinson announced plans to sell the stadium, claiming that it was no longer suitable. Hearts supporters strongly opposed the plan, however, and responded with the “Save Our Hearts” campaign to block the sale. The sale was canceled upon Vladimir Romanov’s purchase of the club in January 2005.

Tynecastle hosted its first international match on 26 March 1892, a British Home Championship contest between Scotland and Wales. The Scots won by the score of 6-1. Tynecastle’s record attendance is 53,396, acheived for Hearts’ 3rd-round Scottish Cup match against Rangers on 13 February 1932, which Hearts lost 0-1. Due to its conversion to an all-seater, however, and other renovations, Tynecastle’s current capacity is 17,529.

groundhopping with dan roberts..

A new feature for the Matchday programme will be a regular column from our Merchandise Man, Dan Roberts’ brand-new lockdown hobby of groundhopping Dan & his brother-in law, Nick, are two of our newer supporters who loved the Wednesday night atmosphere in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup against Thame Rangers so much, they kept on coming back! It is always great to welcome new supporters to the club, particularly guys as nice as Dan & Nick who know their football and want to help out and do what they can to help the club. Dan volunteered his services and now he & Nick, and Uncle Albert, sell club merchandise on Matchdays. Along with the mugs, scarves, badges, and assorted old programmes, Dan has designed some car stickers as well, which can be yours for a very reasonable £3, which includes postage and packing. Over to you, Dan!

Tring Athletic the Grass Roots Stadium I decided to go to an away game. Tring Athletic Vs Dunstable Town… Why not I thought, as Nick & had I been to all the home games this season. Tring Athletic had some good chips from a mobile fish and chips van. A good afternoon, three points, a clean sheet, and the first time in nearly five years the boys had won three consecutive games.

32 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Shefford Town & Campton

Sadly I missed the away game at Potton United. Then we had the six week break for lockdown number 2 & then December 12th and we’re away at Eynesbury Rovers. I decided to drag my uncle along, and all I can say is what a great performance and so nearly three points. And the volley from Stapes in the 3-3 draw was something pretty special. A second Google search came up with Kent Athletic and The 61 FC. I have always seen 61 FC in reports but wasn’t sure where they played. However, after a bit of research I soon found their ground off the Dunstable Road on the Kingsway Rec.

Little did I know that 3 days later the next game, Dunstable vs Broadfields United, would be both my first and last game (currently) selling merchandise. I’ve really missed it but can’t wait to get back. Good result on the night, Dunstable winning and a red card!!! (well stewarded Sam!)

I have to say I think it’s probably one of my favourite grounds. There is something quite unique about it. The 61FC play in SSML Division 2. I wasn’t sure whether the metal guard was a deterrent against theft or simply to stop the bulb being broken.

Then it happened, all NON ELITE football off! For the Christmas period I had to settle for watching Brentford, my other team on the box. It wasn’t the same as a live game and I have become sterile to the professional game on the TV without fans. Sitting indoors every day, needing exercise, I decided I would visit local clubs and take a few pictures and have a wander about. Golden Rule number one, if I can’t get near I won’t do any trespassing or breaking and entering! I did wonder if I was breaching any lockdown guidelines, but as I always went alone and needed the diversion to break the monotony of staring at four walls and watching repeats of Can’t Pay….I put my mental health first and took myself out every day for exercise. I stayed local and started at Totternhoe. I had a wander around the pitch. It was so wet I got a bit bogged down. Not bad for my first walk (I also use this walking for my Pokemon, but don’t tell Deano)
