the manager

joe deeney “Circumstances dictate the destiny of the squad. Our players are aware if they come out the team through injuries, illness, suspensions, work or whatever the situation then their way back to the team is never guaranteed.” Welcome to the management, players, supporters, and all associated with Stotfold FC ahead of today’s league clash. At the time of writing, Stotfold are 2nd in the league and on a good run of form, having been unbeaten in the last 6 in all competitions. They won their league last year and have settled in exceptionally well this season. They present another big test for us, and I am sure it will be a tough encounter where we will need to deliver a performance worthy of 3 points. We arrive to the game after an unplanned rest period, following no game last Saturday and a late afternoon cancellation on Tuesday against Harpenden. I am always disappointed for any game to be cancelled but Tuesday was even more disappointing than normal. I say this because the sponsored walk from Scottie, Andy Burrows, Peter Bottom and Dean Falla went ahead only for them to arrive soaked with no game to watch. These guys epitomise what this football club means to us all. The level of dedication 2

these guys show to support us, and some wonderful charities is superb. Thank you to you all for your efforts and hope that when the rearrangement happens, we get 3 points for you all. A break at times can be welcomed and at others not so much. We will find out today if the break has done the trick in recharging and repairing our lads for today’s encounter. We have been able to get some players back fit, as we have been stretched as a group. We now face 3 home games (4 if you count our clash with AFC Dunstable). There are some exciting games ahead and I hope we continue to be backed by large numbers and our normal vocal following. We are currently the only unbeaten side in the league and without defeat in 11 games in all competitions. Most managers I am sure would be delighted with that run, but I always want and demand more. We need to start turning these draws into wins and that is a fact. Too many draws over the course of the season is never something that can lead to long term success. A lot of the draws

have been through our own doing. We have had suspensions, injuries, and illnesses at the same time, so our depth has been tested. The pleasing thing for me is that the depth has ensured that we haven’t lost any games.

in bringing lighter moments and offering a different voice and support for the group. I can never underestimate the importance of the role that he plays. Hopefully we will share many more years together!

Circumstances sometimes dictate the destiny of the squad. Our players are aware if they come out the team through injuries, illness, suspensions, work or whatever the situation then their way back to the team is never guaranteed. We have a good group of players, and no one is bullet proof. There have been instances this season where an injury has led to a further sustained break due to another player doing well and keeping their shirt. When we first took the job, we were a less than attractive proposition. 13 months later and we sit in a different place, where the phone is always ringing with players wanting to be a part of the club. No player or staff member is never allowed to sit back and relax at any point, because I am right on them.

I will end my programme notes with a bit of personal news, which is something I have never done but wanted to share with you all. I am delighted to be able to announce that my wife Erica and I are expecting a daughter in March 2023, who will join the predominantly female household! It is the only place in the world where I actually get dominated by a wife and 2 daughters which will soon be 3! Often you probably see the 17 stone, cauliflower eared, loud chap running up and down touchlines educating referees and linesman, generally in Spanish or German. There is a different side away from football and I am very fortunate I have such a supportive wife and family away from football. Managers will tell you this job consumes every waking thought and without the support away from football the job would be substantially harder. My wife and daughters have both attended games and are always made to feel so welcome by the club and I thank you all for that. Luckily, results have been ok for now so hopefully that continues and the dreaded call for my head doesn’t happen for a while yet.

I want to make a special mention to Jammers who has been with us for exactly 12 months. I think it is fair to say he has been fantastic in the turnaround and transformation. He galvanised a very young and inexperienced group and was instrumental in our climb from the bottom. He is now with me on the management team and his influence continues to be first class. He is the perfect go between with me and the players and does everything I ask of him and so much more. I’m incredibly demanding and probably exhaust everyone at the club with my constant quest for perfection. Anybody that has day to day contact with me will know that I am a perfectionist and will never allow below par standards. I accept that the intensity isn’t for everyone, unfortunately whilst I continue to be the Head Coach it is very much that is the way it is! That is why Jammers has been so important

There is loads of football still to be played and my aim is to keep the smiles on faces and bring some actual tangible success on the pitch just like the fantastic work off of it by so many involved with the club. Please keep the fantastic support coming it makes a huge difference. Enjoy the game.

Joe Deeney

been possible without the help of Dan Crooke, who is now living in America. Our away day trips around the country are some of my favourite memories. I have moved on to be one of the club photographers at Luton Town and had the opportunity to photograph teams in the premiership, champions league and international football but coming back to Dunstable is always like going home.

Firstly, I would like to welcome the coaching staff, players, committee, and fans of Stotfold FC to Creasey Park. I’ve now been involved with Dunstable Town on/off for 12 years. I have seen the highs and the lows at this club and after the past 3 or 4 years, we are now finally rising back up. Joe and Kyle have been a breath of fresh air here at Creasey Park and the work they do not only on the field but off the field has been nothing short of amazing. The entire structure of the club has changed and I think all Dunstable fans will agree, it has been a massive turnaround from where we were not so long ago. Andrew Madras, the directors and other volunteers have totally turned this club around. May their work and commitment long continue. Dunstable Town will always have a special place in my heart. If it had not been for Pipeman, aka Paul Harris, I would not be where I am now in my career as a photographer. I have gone from turning up at games to complete my portfolio for a college assignment, to being asked to be one of club photographers. This also would not have

People will say a club photographers’ job is easy, but trust me, it isn’t. it’s not all about pushing a button and being done with it. A lot of work and long hours go on behind the scenes, but it is all worth it. I know that my right-hand man and our other club photographer Chris White has my back and will get the shots that I may not always get and it’s always a privilege to be able to work with him. I will add, that at this level of football, he is one of the best photographers around. Thanks must also go to our media team; Abby, Brad, Matt and Alfie, these guys do all the hard work! Moving on to the Regiment. Now these guys are more than friends. They are like family and not so long ago we tragically lost one of our own. Aaron Bateman, the nicest and most caring person you could ever meet. There are not enough words to fully sum him up, but Creasey Park has lost a bit of its sparkle since his departure. It’s not been the same. His favourite song lyric “In Spite Of It All, Life Is Beautiful” now carries a totally different meaning to us all.

stotfold Stotfold FC was officially founded after WW2 in 1946. In 1951 they joined the South Midlands League Division 2 and in 1953 were promoted to Division 1. Up until 1965 their home ground was located at Hitchin Road Recreation Ground. Football was very much at the centre of the community and locals in the village clubbed together sufficient funds to purchase a meadow named ‘Roker’, and developed the ground aptly named Roker Park which they occupied for 54 years. The club remained in the South Midlands League for over 30 years winning promotion to the Premier League in 1955, winning it in 1980 and finishing runners-up nine times. The club joined the United Counties League in 1984/85 season finishing runners-up twice under the guidance of ex-Arsenal player Ian Allinson. Phil Pateman took over from Ian stepping up after managing the reserves. During 1998-2001 under his charge the club won The Beds Senior and Premier Cups, UCL League Cup, and the Hinchingbrooke Cup as well as being runners-up and finalists in two North Beds Charity Cups. The club also reached the last 32 of the FA Vase and the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Phil stepped down to become Chairman in 2001 but after a brief spell under Kenny Davidson, Phil took temporary charge of the side again until the end of the season and guided the team from relegation candidates to 10th in the league, retaining the NBCC and were finalists in the Hunts Premier Cup.

In 2001 after the club gained planning permission for a ground improvement, the Town Council asked the club to consider giving up their long-term lease for a new stadium along Arlesey Road. They agreed subject to the facility being suitable for playing at Step 4 which would be a significant upgrade on their existing ground allowing them to play at a higher level. This was agreed but as costs spiralled at a time of recession and the project stalled. The early 2000s saw a high turnover of managers and players with Steve Cook, Jim Benton, Glen Clarke, Ian Williscroft and Mark Teeling all unable to turn the club around. After gaining just 11 points from 17 league games and some heavy defeats in season 2006/7, Mark was replaced in December by the return of Ian Allinson and Ian Donnelly. A partnership that turned out to be the most successful in Stotfold’s history. With the club staring relegation in the face, Ian recruited several senior players and the club hauled themselves out of the bottom two, winning 8 of the last 10 games. During the summer of 2007 the squad strengthened further, culminating in the most successful season in the club’s history. Both first and second team squads won their respective league and county cup competitions, (the first club and to date only one to do so), with the second team under John Philbin remaining unbeaten in the league. During the summer Ian was offered the Managers job at Ryman Premier League Borehamwood and he remains one of the best non-League managers of our time, currently in charge at St Albans

City. However, he left a great legacy and the club promoted Ian Donnelly to the position with reserve manager Terry Kitchener stepping up to assist him. Success continued, winning the UCL League Cup and North Beds Charity Cup and finishing League Runners Up. In what turned out to be the club’s final season in the UCL, 2009/10 saw the club produce a very creditable performance reaching the 4th round of the FA Vase and finishing 7th in the league. The first team turned their season around from being 3rd from bottom of the SSML Premier Division with just 18 points at Xmas, to three cup finals and a semi-final place in another. They also moved away from the foot of the table with a further 29 points in the second half of the season. The mid 2010s presented a challenge and following Steve’s resignation in January 2015, Rob Bates stepped up and he managed to mould a team to stave off relegation from the Premier League and finish a creditable 16th. Season 2015/16 saw the first team win the NBCC defeating Biggleswade United 2-0 in the final in what turned out to be the last game under Rob Bates and his management team who resigned shortly after. The turnaround of managers 12

was matching that of the players as Mick Reardon kicked it off lasting less than 2 months, suffering a humiliating club record a FA Cup 12-1 loss to Berkhamsted. Michael Parkin stepped in but despite an amazing run of wins at the end of the season they finished bottom on goal difference. Michael resigned due to work commitments. Back on the Manager merry-go-round they were given a lift when the FA reprieved Stotfold, but they weren’t so lucky in 2018/19 when they finished 3rd from bottom and went down on goal difference. Julian Robinson, Gary Burkett, Mark Nervais, and finally Marce Collington all having a hand in managing more than 100 players. Revised plans were drawn up when an offer to build 60 properties on Roker Park was accepted in return for a stadium being built. The club needed a reboot and the new stadium rising gave them the opportunity to do just that. Former player Luke Gregson could see their vision for the future and agreed to be manager after a wonderful spell at Baldock. After a slow start the Eagles went on a fantastic run of form winning 14 consecutive league games and seemingly nailed on for promotion before Covid-19 null and voided the season.

premier league Ardley United

2020 marked a landmark for the club when they moved to the New Roker Park JSJ Stadium. The £2m Step 4 facility opened with a home game against Shefford Town & Campton, and a crowd of 644 witnessed the Eagles win 5-3.

Arlesey Town

Unfortunately, season 2020/21 was curtailed again by Covid finishing in 7th position and the FA Restructure saw them lose out on promotion by 0.01 of a point. Luke decided to step down due to work and family commitments. After 20 years as club chairman Phil Pateman stepped down with his vice-chairman of some 4 years Rob Parkin agreeing to take on the role of chairman.

Colney Heath

They started the new 2021/22 season under former players Brett and Paul Donnelly. Brett enjoyed a playing career with several local sides and notably Southern League sides Biggleswade Town and Hitchin Town becoming assistant manager at both clubs. Paul a member of the 2008 Championship team, is a familiar and popular face at Stotfold. He managed their development side and worked for several seasons with the Juniors before taking a coaching role at Letchworth GC Eagles. The season saw unprecedented success with the first team winning Division 1 and start season 2022/23 with the same management team. The club will have their first ever Woman’s team this season under the management of Tom Olney and Becca Lightfoot and they will be playing in the Beds and Herts Woman’s Football League.

match report An early Joe Sellers-West strike gave Dunstable Town a lead they took into the half-time break before eagle-eyed referee Jack Frost spotted a Dunstable hand connect with a direct free kick and correctly awarded a penalty which was neatly dispatched by former Hatter and Chairboy, Dean Morgan to give the home side a share of the points. The large travelling faithful awarded Connor Coulson with the Man of the Match award for his stellar performance but the 10 red and black shirts in front of him all made valiant contributions to make sure this was a case of one point gained as opposed to two points lost. Vice-Captain Harry Beaumont wore the Skipper’s armband in the absence of Alfie Osborne and was everywhere marshalling and encouraging his troops. Leading by example and doing his job superbly. J’Ardell Stirling composed and imposing marked danger man Dean Morgan all night and gave nothing away. St Panteleimon have grown out of the local leagues in Harrow, Northwest London and as the name suggests have their roots in the Greek & Greek Cypriot community and the Orthodox church of St Panteleimon in Kenton which is where the Club derives their name from and still serves as their spiritual base. The last time our paths crossed was three years ago in a cup match. In those days St Panteleimon ground shared at North Greenford Utd. They were playing at Step 6 but were more than a match for the Blues that evening and won comprehensively 4-1. Former AFC

Dunstable man Courtney Massey being the standout player that evening. Massey again lined up for St Panteleimon but was unable to exert the same degree of influence he had done three years ago. While Massy and others remain from the side who won back in 2019, Dunstable have cleared the decks and started again. They are a different beast to 2019 and pack a different punch. Isaac Olaleye’s inch perfect cross for Joe Sellers-West in the 2nd minute was a dream start for the away side, who were again well supported and made up most of the crowd. To many peoples surprise the bar and snack bar were closed so no refreshments were available. The situation was kindly resolved by the appearance of Hertford Town owner & manager, and former Dunstable Town player Ben Herd, who opened up for the cold and hungry supporters. Blues needed to make an early substitution with the influential Dylan Baker needing to be replaced by Dan Naylor. While Dunstable were the superior team in the first half, the home team took the game to the Blues in the second half and were level on 68 minutes from the penalty spot. Although the Blues continued to look a dangerous threat on the break, Deeney reflected on Connor Coulson’s man of the match winning display and three top draw saves he produced to make sure that the Blues left Hertfordshire with another precious point in the bag.

youth update

Everyone at the club would like to send get well wishes to Dunstable Town Under 15s Tigers player Alex Dalton. Alex sadly broke his ankle in two places during the team’s game against Newport Pagnall Town Jaguars last Sunday. He has had a metal plate, 4 screws and a locking screw put into his ankle. Alex stands behind the goal at first team matches and we all hope to see him back behind the goal with the fans supporting the team very soon.

sponsored walk

With heavy overnight rain, the game at Rothamsted Park had some doubt about it, but our plucky walkers still met at Creasey for the planned 21 km walk, the 2nd sponsored walk of the season. With the keen Andy Burrows already in the car park sheltering from a brief shower, he was soon joined by Richard Scott and then Pete Bottom. After surveying various online weather forecast apps, they opted to make a start, and as the short shower subsided and they were soon bathed in glorious autumn sunshine as they approached the newly decorated Globe in Edward Street. Cutting through Grove Gardens towards the Luton – Dunstable Busway, they were met by Dean Falla leaping off the bus on Court Drive and the walking quartet were reunited heading towards Luton. 38

DUNSTABLE TOWN vs stotfold

The Luton-Dunstable Busway is a guided bus system which has been open for 9 years. Delivered by Central Bedfordshire Council six months late and £40million over budget, it follows the old Dunstable Branch railway line and links Dunstable and Luton town centres with 7.7-miles of concrete beams, that buses fitted with guide wheels can travel at speeds of up to 50mph.

to Luton. With the Red Cow, a Grade II listed pub and a glowing fireplace just over a mile away, they opted to continue. Owned by the Farr Brewery based in nearby Wheathampstead, they served their excellent 1492, a hazy American IPA at a bold 5%.

The Dunstable Branch Line used to link the West Coast Line at Leighton Buzzard to Luton on the Midland Line and Welwyn Garden City on the East Coast Main Line. This closed to passengers in 1965 but was used into the 1980s by Bedford Trucks and Blue Circle Industries. The busway has a footpath along its length and our brave walkers had to dodge various cyclists and e-scooter riders on their way past Kenilworth Road to the Castle. On approach, the pub looked dark but as a rock music venue its USP is dark and gloomy, and was well-stocked with Robinsons Trooper, and Beavertown’s Neck Oil IPA. Suitably refreshed the brave ramblers returned to their route towards Gipsy Lane where they picked up the Harpenden-Luton Greenway, a 6-mile footpath that winds its way to Harpenden in between the Lower Luton Road and the Midland Railway.

After a couple of pints, there was chat about how to get home, especially as most of their lifts home were now not coming to town. Club legend, all-round diamond geezer, and director of football Gary Levy came to the lads rescue and collected them. Their 3rd walk will be on Saturday 19th November when we play Tring Athletic. Another 21km with a walk south-west towards Ivinghoe. From there down the Grand Union Canal towpath from Cooks Wharf towards Tring via the Red Lion in Marsworth. If you would like to support our walkers in their quest to purchase a pitchside defibrillator and to support the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and The OLLIE Foundation, and help the club’s support groups and activities, including our walking football sessions, Sphere at the Glider and Chums and Crumbs at Dunstable Library please go to www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dtfc2

With the evening drawing in and the sun beginning to set, phones started to ping with news that the game had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Sat halfway between the two towns our walkers discussed the pros and cons of continuing to Harpenden or returning DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

DUNSTABLE TOWN vs stotfold

On the 26th of October 1863 in the Freemasons Tavern on Great Queen Street in London, the first meeting of the Football Association took place. The main item for discussion was to create a codified set of rules, that would “embrace the best and most acceptable points of all the various methods of play under one heading of Football”. Eleven clubs, all based in London, attended the meeting after Ebenezer Cobb Morley suggested that football needed set rules and a governing body similar in structure to how the Marylebone Cricket Club ruled cricket. The clubs there that night were Barnes Football Club, Civil Service, the Crusaders, Forest of Leytonstone, No Names Club of Kilburn, Crystal Palace, Blackheath, Kensington School, Perceval House of Blackheath, Surbiton and Blackheath Proprietary School. One small area of London, Blackheath, with a population of a few thousand that provided three of the clubs who were willing to codify the game of football for the first time in the world. At that historic meeting, Mr Francis Maule Campbell, from Blackheath FC, was elected treasurer. However, by the sixth meeting, less than two months later, Campbell withdrew Blackheath FC from the new structure, created under the name of the Football Association, after hearing that some of the more “robust” rules that his side played to in South East London would be outlawed. Campbell wasn’t alone in challenging the rest of the newly found association on the rules to play under. G.W Shillingford,

representing Perceval House, also disagreed with the majority. ‘Football’, they thought, would be a blend of handling and dribbling. Players would be able to handle the ball: a fair catch accompanied by ‘a mark with the heel’ would win a free kick. The sticking point was ‘hacking’, or kicking an opponent on the leg, which Blackheath wanted to keep. Eliminating hacking would “do away with all the courage and pluck from the game. Campbell was reported to have said after leaving the group, further explaining that the rules that the FA intended to adopt would destroy the game and all interest in it. Other clubs took the decision to follow Blackheath’s lead and on 26 January 1871 a meeting attended by 22 clubs was held at the Pall Mall Restaurant, the result of which was the formation of the Rugby Football Union (RFU). Today, seven of the original twenty two founder members of the RFU still exist with Blackheath playing their rugby in the third tier of English rugby just down the road from Blackheath in Eltham. However, from the founding members of the Football Association only Civil Service FC, who now play in the Southern Amateur League’s Senior Division One, are the only surviving club (the Crystal Palace club is not the same as the Premier League club). However, with three of the FA’s original eleven member clubs and one of the founders of the RFU, it is fair to say that the epicentre of the footballing world was for a short period of time was in SE3, London.

The Pieman (@_TheRealPieMan) is a Tottenham Hotspur fan who has attended thousands of matches and hundreds of grounds throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. This week he visits Highworth Town FC.

Highworth is a market town and civil parish in the Borough of Swindon. Located 6 miles north-east of Swindon town centre, it is notable for its Queen Anne and Georgian buildings and the 13th century St Michael’s church. The town is situated on a hill in the upper Thames Valley and at 436 feet above sea level is the highest town in Wiltshire. The Highworth Branch Line was a short railway line, in use from 1883 to 1962. It was most successful as a goods line linking the Great Western Main Line to factories around the town. The football club was established in 1893. Success arrived in 1910 when the club won the Swindon Junior Cup. Progression via the Cirencester & District League, the Swindon & District League, Wiltshire Combination, and the Wiltshire County League culminated with the club moving up to the Hellenic League in 1984. The 2014-15 season saw Highworth Town reach the semi46

finals of the FA Vase before losing 3-0 on aggregate to North Shields. In 2018 the club was promoted to the Southern League. This excursion proved relatively straightforward by public transport. The highlight was being able to travel on the Central London section of the Elizabeth Line from Liverpool Street to Paddington for the first time. A train to Swindon followed by the regular No 7 bus service (delayed by roadworks on the main road into the town) enabled me to reach Highworth.

me that “the rain is coming in now. You know that when you can no longer see the Motorola building in the distance”. In less than a minute the rain had arrived! Behind the other end there is a horse chestnut tree and during the first half, Ian Harvey was able to reminisce about his “conkering” days as a child growing up in Harlow.

On arrival at Highworth I made my way to The Elms Recreation Ground and was able to tour the stadium to get some photographs. I then adjourned to the Rose and Crown where the all-day breakfast was superb. The locals were extremely friendly and this welcoming pub had an old-fashioned feel about the place (lots of brewery memorabilia too). My pint of Sea Fury Special Ale (5.0%) was in fine condition and is much better than Doom Bar from the same stable. The Elms Recreation Ground is a venue that underlines the quirkiness of English football stadia. There is a wonderful slope that runs not just from end to end, but also side to side. The main clubhouse building is at the car park end of the ground and almost adjacent is the Directors refreshment facilities. This solid wooden structure also houses additional toilet facilities. The main spectator accommodation is situated along one side and consists of two covered seated stands with a decent covered standing area between. The only other furniture at the ground are the dugouts on the opposite side of the ground. The fence behind leads to the wider recreation ground and on this almost dry day, plenty of dog walkers could be seen enjoying the Wiltshire experience. However, one club official did alert me to a brief shower. He told

This was a peculiar football match and after a goal free first period, one might have expected a blankety blank. Both sides huffed and puffed without success. Eventually Harlow Town edged in front and when Jared Small doubled his personal tally from the spot, it looked likely that the 3 points were heading back to Essex on the Golden Boy coach. Substitutions by the home side (also down to ten players), particularly the introduction of Nick Stanley (he was involved in everything and transformed the match), suddenly saw them 3-2 ahead. A late leveller for the visitors meant a share of the spoils and a draw was a fair result.
