FROM the boardroom Good afternoon, and on behalf of everybody at Dunstable Town can I wish you a very Happy New Year. We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials, and supporters from Sutton Coldfield Town, for what will be our first encounter with them this season. Well, what a difference a few days make! Coming off the disappointment of the AFC result the team has responded brilliantly with six points and two clean sheets. Some of the football played has been exemplary. If you haven’t already done so , take a look at the highlights of the North Leigh game posted on YouTube recently. We couldn’t be prouder of the technique, movement, and clinical finishing. At Welwyn Garden City on New Year’s Day, we carried on where we left off three days previously. The close score line did not reflect our superiority, particularly in the 1st half. No complaints from the good people at WGC about the result . That said ,it’s a really topsy-turvy league with some interesting results particularly on New Year’s Day. The Blues have shown in all our fixtures against the ‘more fancied’ teams that we can more than compete. Our promotional video is now approaching 500 hits on You Tube, and we will be talking further about the club on Three Counties Radio on Monday 7th January on the Olllie Bayliss Non-League Show. Our presence in the Quadrant will continue . We have to
work hard to get people through the gate. In simple terms 10 more fans per home game gives us an extra £100 to work with. I’m sure you’ll agree that the football we are trying to play is worth a greater audience. For those who are reading these programme notes, why not bring a friend or two to games at Creasey Park . They will be given a warm welcome and will be part of our on -going vision for semiprofessional football in Dunstable. A word of welcome to young Marcus Gouldborne to the club. He’s on work experience from Stevenage FC. It’s gratifying that Stevenage have entrusted the next part of his development to Tony and the team. Just turned 18, Marcus has already proved an excellent addition to our talented squad. Also, just to confirm our Quiz Night on February 2nd at 7pm at Creasey Park. Teams of up to 6 people and an entry fee of £6 per person , which includes a buffet. If you are interested contact me on: n.barker4@ntlworld.com for details. Finally, we want this run of form to continue ,and you play no small part in helping that to happen. Let’s really get behind the boys today.
Enjoy the m atch Neil

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and a warm welcome to all from Sutton Coldfield FC. A team in good form that is yielding a similar return to ourselves, so this should make for a really good game. I hope it is and all then return safely home in plummeting temperatures. We want to win every game we play in, of course, and there can be no question of that endevour from the lads week in week out. Sometimes it’s difficult when were so stretched and with so many players injured which formed most of the first part of the 2018 season. The frustration is increased when those injuries are on the back of bad tackles, which for some, seems to form part of their tactics to stop us playing. I guess we have to take that as a compliment. I also take it as a compliment that our players are approached on such a regular basis. All outside of the rules but I breathe a sigh of relief when I hear that the main part of that approach is “How much are you on”? “We could pay you more”. It shows we have players that others admire but it’s worth remembering that our players have serious ambitions about jumping leagues and are planning actual careers. They know they won’t affect that just by making a small financial gain in the short term. They can see the bigger picture and the platform and methods we have are crucial to their development. So, we did it, keeper number 10! Double figures. We topped last season. To put that in perspective since I’ve been at
Dunstable not one keeper has changed in the other goal. We have had it several times this season during games with outfield players taking the gloves. It’s a very unusual situation that is for sure. But this one is for reasons we support. Nathan will return to us but today will feature in a Premier League U23 fixture and is again, credit to his progress. We talk about defining success, let’s be realistic. Players moving from U18s to the development squad weakens the U18, but as a club that is success. Players moving from the development squad to the first team weakens the development squad, but that’s success. Players moving from the first team into professional football is success, but weakens us, of course. But that is the very definition of a pathway football club and it’s that mindset and development ethos that will secure the clubs sustainable future. On that basis I have to thank my long term good friend Joe Deeney whom I worked with at Luton Town for many years for helping us at short notice without hesitation. I’m sure we can form a very decent relationship with Hemel Hempstead Town FC moving forward. Happy new year!

SUttON COLdFieLd tOWN hiStORy The football club associated with Sutton Coldfield was formed in 1879 with the first game taking place on the 1st of February at “Meadow Plat” in Sutton Park when the club lost 6-2 to Birmingham. The club moved to its present ground in Coles Lane in 1920. From just after the Second World War until the early 1980’s, the club played its football in regional leagues in the area, including Walsall Senior, Birmingham Comb, Birmingham Senior, Worcester Combination, Midland Combination and West Midlands Leagues. In 1980-81 they reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup for the 1st time in our history and were drawn at home to Doncaster Rovers of the then 4th division. In front of a record crowd of over 2200 at Coles Lane they played well but were defeated 2-0 with 2 late goals. In 1982-83 they joined the Southern League following the introduction of the revised football pyramid. They secured promotion to the Premier League after finishing runners up to Cheltenham Town. Relegated the following season and then remained in the Southern League at step 4 until 2010-11. In 1992-93 they reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup for the 2nd time in our history and were drawn away to Bolton Wanderers of the then 2nd Division at Burnden Park. In front of a crowd of
over 5000, a major shock was on the cards when a late goal for Sutton was ruled out for offside and the game finished with a 2-1 win for Bolton who were promoted that season and also reached the 5th round of the FA Cup winning at Anfield along the way. In season 2007-08 Sutton lost in the play offs to eventual winners Stourbridge and in the following season 2008-09 missed out on the play offs on goal difference when Chesham United equalized two minutes from time against Bromsgrove Rovers. In season 2010-11 they were moved by the FA into the eVO-STICK Northern Premier League Div. 1 South and again missed out on the play offs finishing 6th for the third year in a row. In 2009-10 and for the first time in our 132-year history they won the Birmingham Senior Challenge Cup beating Nuneaton Town 1-0 in the final. 2011 saw the installation of the 3g artificial pitch at Coles Lane. In September 2012, Chris Keogh stepped down as manager after 12 years and joined the Board, his assistant Neil Tooth taking over as manager. In 2014-5, the Club took the big step of changing the status of the club from a Members Club to a Company Limited by Guarantee. In the same season, they earned a play-off berth by finishing fourth in the regular season. In
SUttON COLdFieLd tOWN hiStORy the semi-finals they travelled to Newcastle Town, who had finished third, and came away with a 3-1 win. This put us in the final, away at Leek Town, who had finished second. This turned out to be a great game and Sutton scored a very good 2-0 victory to get promoted to the Northern League Premier Division. The last time they had played at level 3 was some 30 odd years ago in the Southern League. Season 2015/16 was a new experience for us, after promotion via the play-offs, to the Premier Division. Many people were saying they would immediately get relegated but the team proved them all wrong. After a steady start of 3 draws and 2 losses in the first 5 games, they hit a purple patch over the next 9 games, winning 7, drawing 2, putting us second place in the league. Following a number of injuries, they slipped down the league to finish a creditable 12th. In the FA Cup they were knocked out in the first qualifying round by Oadby Town but in the FA Trophy they were more successful, when they reached the first round proper only to lose to National League side Barrow AFC 1—0 to a late goal. After a poor start to season 2016-17, Sutton struggled to pick up points and were knocked out of the FA Cup and Trophy in the early rounds. A difficult decision was made and the club parted company with the management team having won 3 and drawn 5 of the 20 league games
played. Despite some improvement in form they remained in the bottom four for almost the entire season and went into the last game needing to better Corby’s result to survive. A tremendously spirited performance earned a point with a 0 – 0 draw at much fancied Workington and with Corby losing at Coalville survival was ensured. The 2017 – 2018 season mirrored that of the previous year; again, Sutton struggled to pick up league points and were knocked out of the FA Cup and Trophy in the early rounds by lower league teams. At the beginning of 2018 with the team having only 5 wins and 5 draws from 29 games and a goal difference of minus 48 the decision was once again taken to change the management. Neil Tooth (Toothy) was reappointed with a new management team and reinvigorated the team doubling the number of wins and being competitive in almost all the remaining games. However, the deficit inherited was too great and relegation became something of a formality. Nevertheless, Toothy has continued to enhance his management team and has established a much-changed squad to take on what they hope will be a successful season in the eVO-STICK League South Division One Central.
SUttON COLdFieLd tOWN PLayeR PROFiLeS Lewis Gwilliams 26 – GK – Lewis returns to the club following spells at Alvechurch Fc, Rugby Town and Worcester City having been part of our promotion winning squad. A great shot stopper Connor Hopkins 18 – GK - Connor joined in pre-season and he is a very talented young Goal Keeper who will push Lewis all the way. Has impressed in each of his games. James Beresford 23- DEF –Bez is a product of our youth system and progressed from the under 18s and Under 21s and is now in his 5th season at first team level. Recently played his 100th first team game against Corby Town. A fantastic timer when jumping to head the ball. James Mutton 23 – DeF – Jimmy joined in pre-season from Redditch Utd and is a commanding centre half who leads the back line; he lists Hednesford Town and Nuneaton Town Fc amongst his former clubs. Mitchell Clarke 25 – DeF – Another new recruit during pre-season Mitch is comfortable in defence or midfield. Joining rom Wolverhampton Sporting Mitch has also been handed the Captain’s armband for this season and always leads by example. Samuel Ruben 19 – DeF – Sam has made the step up from the under 21s side during pre-season and his impressive performances have earned him a place in the first team squad. A dependable marker and tackler.
Ben George 24 – DeF – Ben has joined us from Stamford on a permanent basis. He is an experienced full back having started his career at Walsall and had a spell at Stourbridge before joining Stamford. Unlucky to be injured in the second game of the season but now back at his best. Stephen Palmer 31 – MID – Another familiar face returning to Coles Lane for this season following spells at Hednesford Town and Romulus. Athletic Palms is a nononsense midfielder that also has a good array of passing; very dependable. Lee Smith 27 – MID – Lee is one of the few survivors from last season’s squad but his performances towards the end of last season meant he was one the manager needed to keep. A combative midfielder who would go through a brick wall to win a ball and he has a ferocious shot that has scored important goals this season. Max McNulty 18 – MID – Max broke into the first team last season at the age of 17 and has become a permanent fixture in the squad who seems to learn more with each game he plays. A box to box player who has the talent to play higher, certainly one to watch. Matthew Hearsey 27– MID – Matt joined in pre-season and lists Halesowen Town, Rushall Olympic and Newtown FC amongst his former clubs. Matt is a skilful, attacking player comfortable anywhere

Alex Moore 21 – MID – Alex also joined from Wolverhampton Sporting FC and he is a creative ball playing midfielder with an eye for a goal. His set pieces are also of the highest quality. He was unfortunate to be injured for the start of the season but is back and challenging for a regular start. Okechukwu Onyeulo 30 - FWD – J Jay came in on trial during pre-season having played in Italy and was an instant success with some strong performances and goals. Very pacey and tricky customer who will surprise a few, capable of the unexpected. Alex Curtis 23 - DeF A recent signing who has made an immediate impact as a strong tackling full back and has made the position his own. Alex is equally at home pushing wide into midfield where he is a great crosser of the ball. Ryan Nesbitt 20 – FWD - Another recent signing who started as a midfielder who liked to go forward to support the attack but has developed into an excellent striker and is setting a good goal scoring record. Kyle Delaney 22– MID – Also recently signed Kyle is a creative midfielder with pace who is comfortable playing centrally and out wide from where he has the ability
Louis Monaghan 17 - FWD - Louis is another of our U18 squad who has played at County level and been brought into the first team squad. He comes from a Gaelic Football background and likes to use his strength to battle in the box. Francis Amartey 19 – FWD – A potentially dynamic forward who has just signed on a youth loan from Birmingham City FC. Daniel Hurst 18 – MID- Is another member of the U18 squad whose recent performances have enabled him to force his way into the first team squad. A 100% committed player whose enthusiasm can only benefit the team.
RePORtiNG iN
WeLWyN GaRdeN City 0-1 dUNStabLe tOWN The first quarter hour of this match was absorbing and only brave and clever defending kept Dunstable out as James Lauder pounced only to see his goal bound shot headed away from under the cross bar. Two minutes later and a delightful offensive move opened up the City backline with the three Dunstable forwards interlocking to see Marcus Gouldbourne’s effort pass inches the wrong side of the post. On 25 minutes many in the crowd fully expected referee Andreas Anastasiou to point to the spot as a City forward went down in the box challenged by a Town defender, however no infringement was given and the referee waved play on allowing Dunstable to clear their lines as City went after an equaliser. The match was played in a good competitive fashion with their being mutual respect between City Manager Adam Fisher and our very own Tony McCool, two proper football men. Adam has been in charge at WGC for five years having previously been no.2 at Barton Rovers. He is a former player at WGC and although his Team yesterday lacked two or three regulars there were spells where City looked threatening and Dunstable were glad for the steady “had on the tiller” experience of Kyle Lincoln to break up play and pass the ball out of defence aided and abetted by the ever reliable, Daniel Trif. The second half proved to be a less lively affair than the first half with Dunstable again enjoying the lion’s share of chances but frustratingly being unable to find a game killing second goal. Arel Amu & brother, erin as well as Marcus Gouldbourne were all denied.
Alex Taylor was awarded the Man of The Match for another impressive display. Comparisons have been drawn to his playing resemblance to Archie Gemmill and there were occasions when Alex weaved his way through and around his opponents, using his low centre of gravity to bamboozle his opponents, stumbling and getting back up seemingly all in one movement. This starting X1 contained five teenagers and had a combined average age of 21. As Tony wrote recently be under no illusion several of the players you see in our colours as they learn their trade under Tony & Gareth’s careful tutelage will join their three colleagues who have progressed from our ranks into the professional game. As the game entered the final 20 minutes Tony & Gareth brought on Chris Wreh to replace Saul Williams who had covered every blade of grass and been at the heart of so much of Dunstable’s attacking intent. Into the final five minutes Marcus Gouldbourne was replaced by John Sonuga and although referee Mr Anastesiou signalled a further three minutes of stoppage time, there would be no repeat of City rescuing a point late on as they had on Saturday at Didcot. The victory moved Town up one place in the League to 16th with 22 points from 20 games, and up to 7th in the Form table with 10 points from the last 6 games.

5 January 1963 - The FA Cup Gets Put On Ice On 5 January 1963, the longest round in FA Cup history kicked off, as severe winter weather forced postponements that stretched out into the middle of March. Britain’s coldest winter since 1740 delivered a combination of snow and ice, sending the country into what commentators called “the Big Freeze.” Consequently, all of the FA Cup matches scheduled for that Saturday were postponed except for three--two in the North West (Sunderland’s 1-4 win at Preston North End and Tranmere Rovers’ 2-2 draw with Chelsea) and one in the South West (West Brom’s 1-5 win at Plymouth).
Some matches were played a few days later while others suffered repeated postponements. Birmingham City’s contest against Bury included a replay, one match that had to be abandoned, and a total of 14 postponements before Bury claimed a 2-0 victory on 7 March. In all, there were 261 postponements over the course of three weeks. The round finally ended on 11 March when Middlesbrough beat Blackburn in a replay.
